• Cannot copy files from external USB HDD to computer

  Hello I have a HDD disk connected with a USB converter to my computer. It consists of two partitions, the first one is mounted automatically and I can grab all the files from it, but the second one I have to mount manually as a root in the command line, if I try to open it with nautilus it gives an error. The drive where the problem is is drive sdb1, sdb2 has the same settings but works fine. I am using Debian Wheezy. This is the fstab: /dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 /dev/sdb2 /media/usb1 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 And when I try to copy the files with this command (as root) cp -vr /media/usb0/* /home/user/Videos/ I get these types of errors: cp: reading `/media/usb0/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied cp: failed to extend `/home/user/Videos/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied How can I at least copy the files to my main HDD? I don't need to adjust them I only need to copy them!

• What triggered the popularity of lambda functions in modern mainstream programming languages?

  In the last few years anonymous functions (AKA lambda functions) have become a very popular language construct and almost every major / mainstream programming language has introduced them or is planned to introduce them in an upcoming revision of the standard. Yet, anonymous functions are a very old and very well-known concept in Mathematics and Computer Science (invented by the mathematician Alonzo Church around 1936, and used by the Lisp programming language since 1958, see e.g. here). So why didn't today's mainstream programming languages (many of which originated 15 to 20 years ago) support lambda functions from the very beginning and only introduced them later? And what triggered the massive adoption of anonymous functions in the last few years? Is there some specific event, new requirement or programming technique that started this phenomenon? IMPORTANT NOTE The focus of this question is the introduction of anonymous functions in modern, main-stream (and therefore, maybe with a few exceptions, non functional) languages. Also, note that anonymous functions (blocks) are present in Smalltalk, which is not a functional language, and that normal named functions have been present even in procedural languages like C and Pascal for a long time. Please do not overgeneralize your answers by speaking about "the adoption of the functional paradigm and its benefits", because this is not the topic of the question.

• Xmonad Xsession

  My user level: noob-ish, so please bear with me I'm running 12.04 LTS. I have installed and, to some extent, configured xmonad 0.10 The "automagically" created xsession for it works fine as it is, but when I login it won't run a startup script I've created and "call from" /usr/share/xsessions/xmonad.desktop, if that's right. I've read pretty much all I could find about .xinitrc and .xsession, I tried that and it somehow messed up the other "sessions", if I'm explaining myself correctly. Had to $unity --reset to have the "main session" working again. Anyway, my question is, how do I autostart xmobar and set a desktop background after login into xmonad's default Xsession? I tried this script, start-xmonad: #!/bin/bash # #I only used one of the following each time I tried, none worked #Also, do I really need the '&'? I know what they're for, but... nitrogen --restore & feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/picture.png & #Then I want xmobar to start, again do I need the '&'? I know it's for it to run #in the background, but I tried removing the '&' and xmonad still launched xmobar & #Finally, the only thing that seems to work in this script exec xmonad Yes, I made sure I did chomd +x ~/start-xmonad The xmonad.desktop is [Desktop Entry] Name=XMonad Encoding=UTF-8 Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/myusername/start-xmonad Icon=custom_xmonad_badge.png Type=XSession So, this didn't work, now I'm here. • opening and closing connection with port happening fastly

  We have a Main application named "Trevor" installed in 2008R2 machine named "TEAMER12" which is slow now. One more application named "TVS" also running in and found there were many connections per second occurring to port 5009. netstat tool mentions that some fast connection open/close seen for port 5009 So first it will be listening mode like shown below TCP 0.0.0.0:5009 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING then establishes connection like TCP 127.0.0.1:5009 TEAMER12:49519 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:5009 TEAMER12:60903 ESTABLISHED After that iwill become TIME_WAIT and i could see several entries like shown below TCP 127.0.0.1:49156 TEAMER12:5009 TIME_WAIT after that it will establish connection like TCP 127.0.0.1:60903 TEAMER12:5009 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:64181 TEAMER12:microsoft-ds ESTABLISHED again it will go several entries like TIME_WAIT TCP 127.0.0.1:49156 TEAMER12:5009 TIME_WAIT Finally it will establish like this TCP 172.26.127.40:139 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING TCP 172.26.127.42:139 TEAMER12:0 LISTENING TCP 172.26.127.42:5009 TEAMER12:64445 ESTABLISHED TCP 172.26.127.42:64445 TEAMER12:5009 ESTABLISHED Can any body tell me whats the reason behind why many connections per second occurring to port 5009 and why application slow?

• Can an internally developed fast evolving, agile, short sprint web application lend itself to offshoring?

  I have recently been set a target to achieve readiness to successfully manage and deliver results through the usage of offshore teams on our mainline development project within 12 months. Our mainline is a multi-thousand user highly available web application, and various related SAAS components delivered through the above mentioned web application. We work agile on the mainline with a rapid 1 week sprint using continuous integration. Our delivery platform is a bespoke php framework, although we have some .net services and components in the mix. My view is: an offshore team could work if we either ship out an entire isolated project for offshore development, or we specify a component for our system in huge detail up front. But we don't currently work like that, and it will conflict with the in-house method, and unless the off-shore is working within our team, with our development/deployment chain it could be an integration nightmare. So my question is, given we have a closed source bespoke framework (Private IP) which we train our developers to use, and we work agile minimising documentation, maximising communication and responding to rapidly changing requirements, and much of the quality control is via team skills building and peer review, how can I make off-shoring work on our main line development?

• Light mask map and camera for static lights in XNA Platformer

  Using the example for some basic light maps found here : http://blog.josack.com/2011/07/xna-2d-dynamic-lighting.html, I've managed to create a lightmap texture using individual lightmaps and display it over a 2D tiled world as in the Platformer example. I'm using the very basic 2D camera example as found here : http://www.david-amador.com/2009/10/xna-camera-2d-with-zoom-and-rotation/, and the problem is that the lightmap texture scrolls with the player sprite. This looks pretty good and would be excellent for lighting the player sprite as it moves. But, I also want to be able to place static lights (or some initial position for the lights) that do not move with the player or camera. When I turn off the camera or give it a static position, it works as a series of static lights so I believe it's probably caused by the camera transformation matrix following the player around. I'm using RenderTarget2Ds, one for the main game screen after all the backgrounds and tiles are rendered, and one for the "lightmap" which consists of a black background and a bunch of lighting textures which are merged with it using additive blending. For now, I'm doing all of this in PlatformerGame.cs where the camera transformation and position is set and the level.Draw() call is made. I can't figure out how to separate the drawing of the lightmap and the camera following the player. I was thinking it would be better to render the shadows and lighting directly in the drawing of the level itself, but I'm not sure how to do that either because this technique requires RenderTarget2Ds and calling SpriteBatch.Begin()/End().

• 2 GPUs (for multi-monitor setup)

  I have a machine to which I need to connect a second monitor. This machine currently hosts a ATI Radeon HD 4770 with two DVI adapters. The second monitor to be hooked to this machine is a VGA monitor. Until I find a DVI-VGA adpater, I'm thinking installing a second graphics card which does have a VGA adapter, an NVidia card. Can I successfully run both AMD and NVidia cards on this machine? Any specifics I must be aware of, like how to ensure the ATI card to be the main card? Operating system is Windows 7

• Change Directory Browsing Page in IIS 7.5

  NOTE: This post is tagged ASP Classic but really that's just one of the languages in which I could write it. I really need assistance with configuring IIS (7.5). I have found many scripts and ideas to effect this but I require that it's not be a "drop-in" replacement, as in it must work globally for any possibly directory from one codebase.   I have a Postfix server and using it with Outlook (POP/SMTP). I have different sender addresses for an account. Now I want to configure a relay for a specific sender address. For example I have postfix for my main domain domain1.com. Now I have a sender address that is domain2.com. For that sender address I want that postfix to relay mail to a second SMTP server. I think that should be possible without problems. But the problem is that I have to create a SSH tunnel to the second server to connect to the SMTP server. But I cant use a persistent SSH connection so I want to know if it is possible that postfix executes some script before relaying the mail to the second SMTP server. I already found some information for executing a script when incomming emails but I only want to establish the SSH tunnel before postfix relays the mail to the second SMTP server.

• Random users randomly being unable to connect to my static content domain

  I store all of my images, js, and css files on a separate domain to try and speed up page load times (it isn't a CDN, just a separate domain on the same server). This works fine for 99% of the users, 99% of the time. However, there are users that randomly are unable to connect to the static content domain for periods of 1-5 hours. They can go to the main site, but no images will load and everything is just white because no css is being loaded. If they go to the static content domain itself, the page just idles for a while and then times out with a blank white page, no error messages. I have no idea what could be causing this, and it hasn't happened to me, any ideas? I am running Apache on CentOS 5.5.

Because it is only a portion of my job and the company's product line is expanding so quickly, I can't stay on top of the documentation. As a result, I've been yearning for an information management system with a handful of specific features. I've found many products that have a subset, but none that have all the features I'm looking for. I'm at the point of picking an existing product and expanding it to cover my desired feature set, however, this will be a pet project and I will be learning the underlying language as I go. So, the main question is which existing product will be the easiest to expand to cover the full feature set and has a relatively easy to learn language? Alternatively, have I missed another existing program that will cover the feature set or should be in my list of "close, but not quite there"? • Which tool / technology: System management for databases and dependent services

  I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

• How can I create an encrypted, bootable thumbdrive containing Linux?

  I want to have a bootable flash drive that's fully encrypted. I have not tested, but seem to like, TrueCrypt, which provides a fully encrypted system and has lots of other features I like (for instance, hidden volumes). Unfortunately, it seems, system encryption is only supported for Windows, although I'm not sure why. The crux here, I guess, is that you need a boot loader that is capable of asking for your password and decrypt the disk, at least the part that contains kernel and initrd. An alternative might be to have an unencrypted boot partition containing a more powerful system which will decrypt and mount the main partition. However, this brings up the question of whether you're introducing data leaks. Depending on the specific scenario, I may lack the experience to assess if this is a problem. So I'd strongly prefer a fully encrypted disk or a similarly straightforward alternative.

• Refering to a Cell in a Different Workbook

  I work between different spreadsheets, and I like to have one main workbook that links to certain cells in other workbooks. For example, I will do a statement of business activities workbook that has all the business expenses listed, and then I will have individual workbooks for each expense account. In the old excel, I would just put =(and then go to the workbook that i wanted, and then select the cell i wanted and then hit enter) and it would put the amount from that specific cell in my statement of business activities. When I try to do that in excel 2010, I put the equals sign in the cell, and then go to the other workbook and find the cell I want, and when I hit enter, it just moves down a line and nothing happens in the other workbook. How can I get this to work again, what do i need to do??

  In this program the user enters the # of columns of the matrix and then the entries of the matrix. So, for example, if the user enters 2 for column # and 1 2 3 4 for entries then the program develops a 2 by 2 matrix with 1 2 3 4 as entries. My program works perfectly in such a case. • Which window manager do you use?

  Combining "What is your default web browser?" and "What are the differences between Linux Window Managers", I ask you: which window manager do you use, and why? Myself I prefer a minimal window manager on the one hand (in the past I used Fluxbox), but on the other hand wish to go with the main stream, to ease finding (Googling) solutions in case of problems. Hence I stick with Gnome as it is shipped with Ubuntu. Why do you use the window manager which you use? I understand some reasons may be subjective, but please try to cite technical reasons where possible.

• Sun Java keytool importing EV certificates into a single keystore

  At my current job we are using tomcat, customers have custom web portals setup on their own local machines. EV certs are new to me, they have 2 part intermediary and a primary certificate. For our product to work it appears I need to get all three parts installed under a single keystore entry. How can I roll all three parts into a single x.509 compliant file for import? They syntax I am using is as follows: /blah/system/j2sdk/bin/keytool -import -alias foo -keystore /zix/system/jdk1.5.0_06/jre/lib/security/cacerts -file certname.pem -trustcacerts where foo = the keystore name and certname.pem is the main cert. I have tried importing the intermediate certs under their own names into the keystore and I don't know if it's just the product I have to work with (not vanilla tomcat) or what but it doesn't see those. I have seen a working system and all three certs were under the single keystore alias. Anyone have any ideas?

• Ubuntu 12.04 does not suspend with proprietary driver for Radeon 6800

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (though these issues have existed in previous releases too) and have a Radeon 6800 graphics card. I've run into issues with the open-source driver (the system would randomly hang when shutting down) so I switched to the proprietary driver (I compiled it myself using these instructions), but I am having new problems now. The main issue is that when I go into sleep mode, about 50-75% of the time, the screen goes black but the monitor does not actually shut off, and I can hear that the fans/hard drive are not suspending either. I can't get the computer to wake up (Ctrl+Alt+F1,2,3,etc. does not work), and I always end up force shutting down with the power button. I'd really appreciate help! • Migration of PowerBuilder application to multiplatform

  I developed a client/server application with PowerBuilder in the past for medical clinics and done maintenance for it until now. Now, some clients are asking me to develop a release for Mac/Linux and need some advice about what programming language/technology is best suited for it and the learning curve. It’s not a very very big program but I’m the only developer and have done it in my spare time. PowerBuilder is very productive for this kind of projects (database centric), but it’s not multiplatform and it’s hard to sell PowerBuilder application now days (web, .NET, java sells a lot better with his marketing). My programming skills: - I studied C and C++ in the past (university) but never used it on real projects - Have some Java experience but not in desktop applications - Some experience with Ruby on Rails for web projects - Good skills with PowerBuilder and C# (.NET) (there are my main developing languages) My first dilemma is if I change the desktop application to a web interface, but I think the user will lose some user-experience, and some doctors don’t have a clinic (they are alone at home with my software). I think installing a web application (with webserver) for one user will be overwhelming. If I continue developing desktop application, what is at the moment a good framework/toolset to learn having my skills? Somebody has had similar experiences? A lot of thanks

• How to get which file is requested to open using a mac application?

  i have created an mac application which can be open my file extensions. But when i tested it, i dont get the path of the file requested to open using the application, instead i got the "psn_0_151589". I checked it for itunes, textedit, xcode and other applications. • GLSL billboard move center of rotation

  I have successfully set up a billboard shader that works, it can take in a quad and rotate it so it always points toward the screen. The problem is best explained through pictures: This is the start position of the camera: And this is the position, looking in from 45 degree to the right: Obviously, as each character is it's own quad, the shader rotates each one around their own center towards the camera. What I in fact want is for them to rotate around a shared center, how would I do this? What I have been trying to do this far is: mat4 translation = mat4(1.0); translation = glm::translate(translation, vec3(pos)*1.f * 2.f); translation = glm::scale(translation, vec3(scale, 1.f)); translation = glm::translate(translation, vec3(anchorPoint - pos) / vec3(scale, 1.f)); Where the translation is the bufferMatrix sent to the shader. What I am trying to do is offset the center, but this might not be possible with a single matrix..? I am interested in a solution that doesn't require CPU calculations each frame, but rather set it up once and then let the shader do the billboard rotation. I realize there's many different solutions, like merging all the quads together, but I would first like to know if the approach with offsetting the center is possible. If it all seems a bit confusing, it's because I'm a little confused myself.
