• A few tips on deploying Secure Enterprise Search with PeopleSoft

  Oracle's Secure Enterprise Search is part of PeopleSoft now.  It is provided as part of the Peopltools platform as an appliance, and is used with applications starting with release 9.2.  Secure Enterprise Search is a rich and powerful search product that can enhance search and navigation in PeopleSoft applications.  It also provides useful features like facets and filtering that are common in consumer search engines.Several questions have arisen about the deployment of SES and how to administer it and insure optimum performance.  People have also asked about what versions are supported on various platforms.  To address the most common of these questions, we are posting this list of tips.Platform SupportSES 11.1.2.2 does not support some of the platforms supported by PeopleTools, such as Windows 2012 and AIX 7.1. However, PeopleSoft and SES can use different operating system platforms when SES is deployed on a separate machine.SES 11.2.2.2 will have the required platform support for PT 8.53 in the future. We are planning to certify PT 8.53 once the testing is complete in 8.54 development and all platform support is released for 11.2.2.2.ArchitectureWe recommend running SES on a separate machine (from your apps) for two reasons:1.    SES bundles specific WebLogic, Java, and Oracle DB versions and might need different OS patches at a minimum than PeopleSoft. By having SES run on a different machine, these pre-requisites can be managed better through their lifecycle independenly for PeopleSoft and SES.2.    SES is resource intensive - it runs it's own WebLogic and Oracle database. By having SES run on its own machine, sufficient resources can be allocated to SES and free the PeopleSoft servers from impacts of SES load patterns.We will be providing a comprehensive red paper covering PeopleSoft/SES administration in the near future, but until that is published, we'll post tips on this blog.

• Scaling along an arbitrary axis (Dealing with non-uniform scale)

  I'm trying to build my own little engine to get more familiar with the concepts of 3D programming. I have a transform class that on each frame it creates a Scaling Matrix (S), a Rotation Matrix from a Quaternion (R) and concatenates them together (S*R). Once i have SR, I insert the translation values into the bottom of the three columns. So i end up with a transformation matrix that looks like: [SR SR SR 0] [SR SR SR 0] [SR SR SR 0] [tx ty tz 1] This works perfectly in all cases except when rotating an object that has a non-uniform scale. For example a unit cube with ScaleX = 4, ScaleY = 2, ScaleZ = 1 will give me a rectangular box that is 4 times as wide as the depth and twice as high as the depth. If i then translate this around, the box stays the same and looks normal. The problem happens whenever I try to rotate this scaled box. The shape itself becomes distorted and it appears as though the Scale factors are affecting the object on the World X,Y,Z axis rather than the local X,Y,Z axis of the object. I've done some pretty extensive research through a variety of textbooks (Eberly, Moller/Hoffman, Phar etc) and there isn't a ton there to go off of. Online, most of the answers say to avoid non-uniform scaling which I understand the desire to avoid it, but I'd still like to figure out how to support it. The only thing I can think off is that when constructing a Scale Matrix: [sx 0 0 0] [0 sy 0 0] [0 0 sz 0] [0 0 0 1] This is scaling along the World Axis instead of the object's local Direction, Up and Right vectors or it's local Z, Y, X axis. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how to handle construction a transformation matrix that allows for non-uniform scaling and rotation? Thanks!

• Dont Throw Duplicate Exceptions

  In your code, youll sometimes have write code that validates input using a variety of checks.  Assuming you havent embraced AOP and done everything with attributes, its likely that your defensive coding is going to look something like this: public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument == null) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); } if(!someArgument.IsValid()) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); }   // Do Real Work } Do you see a problem here?  Heres the deal Exceptions should be meaningful.  They have value at a number of levels: In the code, throwing an exception lets the develop know that there is an unsupported condition here In calling code, different types of exceptions may be handled differently At runtime, logging of exceptions provides a valuable diagnostic tool Its this last reason I want to focus on.  If you find yourself literally throwing the exact exception in more than one location within a given method, stop.  The stack trace for such an exception is likely going to be identical regardless of which path of execution led to the exception being thrown.  When that happens, you or whomever is debugging the problem will have to guess which exception was thrown.  Guessing is a great way to introduce additional problems and/or greatly increase the amount of time require to properly diagnose and correct any bugs related to this behavior. Dont Guess Be Specific When throwing an exception from multiple code paths within the code, be specific.  Virtually ever exception allows a custom message use it and ensure each case is unique.  If the exception might be handled differently by the caller, than consider implementing a new custom exception type.  Also, dont automatically think that you can improve the code by collapsing the if-then logic into a single call with short-circuiting (e.g. if(x == null || !x.IsValid()) ) that will guarantee that you cant easily throw different information into the message as easily as constructing the exception separately in each case. The code above might be refactored like so:   public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument == null) { throw new ArgumentNullException("someArgument"); } if(!someArgument.IsValid()) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument"); }   // Do Real Work } In this case its taking advantage of the fact that there is already an ArgumentNullException in the framework, but if you didnt have an IsValid() method and were doing validation on your own, it might look like this: public void Foo(SomeClass someArgument) { if(someArgument.Quantity < 0) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument", "Quantity cannot be less than 0. Quantity: " + someArgument.Quantity); } if(someArgument.Quantity > 100) { throw new InvalidArgumentException("someArgument", "SomeArgument.Quantity cannot exceed 100. Quantity: " + someArgument.Quantity); }   // Do Real Work }   Note that in this last example, Im throwing the same exception type in each case, but with different Message values.  Im also making sure to include the value that resulted in the exception, as this can be extremely useful for debugging.  (How many times have you wished NullReferenceException would tell you the name of the variable it was trying to reference?) Dont add work to those who will follow after you to maintain your application (especially since its likely to be you).  Be specific with your exception messages follow DRY when throwing exceptions within a given method by throwing unique exceptions for each interesting case of invalid state. • Changing Launchpad username, and How to know what sites will be affected?

  I am setting up my developer profile on Launchpad, and would like to change my username so it would be same as other sites I use, as well as better reflect me as a person. (that's a much more important thing than it sounds) I want to do this now while I can, because as I understand it, once I set up a PPA it will be impossible to change it due to the username being locked into the PPA URL's to prevent breakages and other problems. But when trying to change my username, it warned me with this message. "Changing your name will change your public OpenID identifier. This means that you might be locked out of certain sites where you used it, or that somebody could create a new profile with the same name and log in as you on these third-party sites." How can I find out which sites will be locked out, and how to still change the username while preventing problems with other sites? Sorry if this is actually a question for Launchpad itself. But I don't know where to post questions like this on the Launchpad site. Edit I understand that it is an issue with OpenID. But how am I to know what sites will be affected? And how do i fix the problems this will cause? Can't I just reset the password (and as a side affect, re-establish the connection with the new username) using my email address?

• Need help eliminating dead code paths and variables from C source code

  I have a legacy C code on my hands, and I am given the task to filter dead/unused symbols and paths from it. Over the time there were many insertions and deletions, causing lots of unused symbols. I have identified many dead variables which were only being written to once or twice, but were never being read from. Both blackbox/whitebox/regression testing proved that dead code removal did not affected any procedures. (We have a comprehensive test-suite). But this removal was done only on a small part of code. Now I am looking for some way to automate this work. We rely on GCC to do the work. P.S. I'm interested in removing stuff like: variables which are being read just for the sake of reading from them. variables which are spread across multiple source files and only being written to. For example: file1.c: int i; file2.c: extern int i; .... i=x;

• How can you achieve and maintain flow while pair programming?

  Flow is a concept introduced by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi; in short, it means to get into the "zone". You feel immersed in your task, focused; the task can be difficult but challenging at the same time. When people achieve flow their productivity shoots up. Programming requires a great deal of mental focus because we often need to juggle several things in our minds at once. Many like to work in a quiet environment where they can direct their full attention to the task. If they are interrupted, it may take several minutes or even hours to get back into flow. I understand there's a practice in agile development and extreme programming called pair programming. It means you put the whole software development team in one room so that communication is seamless. You do write code with your pair because this way you get instant code reviews and fewer bugs get through. I've always had problems achieving flow while doing pair programming because of constant interruptions. I'm thinking deep about an issue then all of sudden someone asks me a question from another pair. My train of thought is lost. How can you achieve and maintain flow while pair programming?

• Use two networks at the same time?

  I want to use Ubuntu 10.10 Server in a classroom, a computer lab whose bandwidth is provided by a local cable ISP. That's no problem, though the school network has an IP printer that I want to use. I cannot reach the printer through the cable Internet. But, I have two network cards. How is it possible to use both networks at once? eth0 (static 192.168.1.254) is plugged into a four-port router, 192.168.1.1. On the public side of the four-port router is Internet provided by the cable company. I also have the classroom workstations plugged into a switch. The switch is plugged into the four-port router. The whole classroom is wired into the cable Internet. The other NIC, eth1, could it be plugged into an Ethernet jack in the wall? It uses the school network, and I might receive by DHCP an IP address like 10.140.10.100, with the printer on maybe 10.120.50.10. I was thinking about installing the printer on the server so that it could be shared with the workstations. But how does this work? Can I just plug eth1 into the school network and access both LANs?   Description of project- I have a test tool to which DUT connects. The test tool has an access point in it and once DUT get connected to it via mac address we check RSSI and some other features of WiFi of DUT. Now I am wondering is there is any way I can measure throughput of Device under test via mac address of DUT from server side. Test-tool has LINUX fedora 11 in it and major coding is done in c/C++ and json command. Previously, I have tried to install ftp server on test-tool and DUT can connect to it and we can measure the throughput or data transfer rate, but this is not feasible solution as it requires lot of intervention from DUT. What I am interested in is 1) To run some script on server side /test tool and it gives me throughput of bandwidth of connected device may be via mac address of DUT OR 2) Server script transfer some files/packets to DUT and we can measure the throughput. Coding is not a major challenge at this stage , I just need some tool which requires minimum intervention from DUT.

• Word 2007 "Out of Memory or Disk Space" Error on launch.

  Word 2007 is installed on a Vista Home Premium machine and whenever it starts up it opens what appears to be a dynamic installer to do something and then throws up the "Out of Memory or Disk Space" error. Word 2007 never completes starting up. Reinstalling Word hasn't helped and if I can avoid reinstalling Windows until Windows 7 is released and get Word working in the mean time, that would be ideal. I've been looking around for a solution, once of which seemed to point to a problem with the user account. I created a second user on the machine and Word still had the same problem. The other solution that seems possible is a corrupted normal.dot/normal.dotm file. However, even in the location it should be, I can't seem to find it. Am I going in the right direction with this? Is there another solution I haven't come across that will fix this? If it is possible that renaming normal.dot/normal.dotm how can I find it?

• Apache - Same username in several .htpasswd files

  In a virtual host, I setup two different <Location> blocks for which the access is restricted by two basic authentication htpasswd files. One htpasswd contains different usernames + a common user name. The other htpasswd file only contains the common user name. My problem is that once users connect a location with the common user name, they have immediate access to the other location without being asker for a different user name. Is there a way to restrict the username access only to the corresponding htpasswd file? Is there a way for users to ask to be re-prompted for another username/password?

• Why doesn't it seem to be any development in the field of 3D VR gear, especially with regard to gaming?

  I remember that way back around 1995, there was this big craze with VR in the media, a whole bunch of (mostly mediocre) games labeled as "virtual-reality-interactive-movie (...)" were published. If I recall correctly, the first 3D VR helmet was called VFX-1 and was sold bundled with Descent and some dedicated joystick. I never owned one, and I read just one review which was mostly enthusiastic, but pointed to some weak points, like the eyes getting tired after an hour or so of playing. Then the whole thing basically flickered down and died. I suppose the main reason it wasn't successful was that the hardware of the day was not powerful enough, the VR gear's design wasn't perfected to make it comfortable and natural to use, and the companies that made it failed to market it successfully. What I can't understand is why isn't there any development in the field today. There is some vr-ish hardware mostly targeted at the consoles (Kinect, Wii remote, TrackIR), but all projects of creating some 3d head-mounted display system seem to be in early infancy, appear once in a trade show somewhere and aren't heard of again. I think it could work great with head tracking and some of today's shooters, flight sims (trackIR is nice but the movement scale translation is awkward) and other games with an FPP POV. Is there any technological reason why decent vr headgear can't be made today, or is it just that nobody really cares/everyone is scared to repeat the '90s failure?

• SQL server 2000 reporting bad values to ASP.Net Application

  I have an instance of SQL server 2000 (8.0.2039) with a rather simple table. We recently had users complain about an application I wrote returning bad values for some of the dates in the databse. When I query the table directly via Server Management Studio, it will return the correct values, however the identical queries from my application report the wrong values, but only for a couple of dates. I have been over the code, and it is solid. If the error was in the code, all of the dates reported should be wrong. I have also run the code on an identical test database, and everything is reported properly. I believe the problem may lie in the sql instance itself, which is why I am posting in Server Fault. My question is, has anyone heard of a database reporting bad (incorrect) date values when queried via web application? It should be noted that this particular server was once manually rebuilt after having a cluster clean run on it.

• Will a higher hard drive size affect performance

  My laptop came with a 500 GB hard drive. I use my laptop for storing my digital photographs, and only have about 14 GB of file storage left on the original hard drive. I have a 750 GB external hard drive, but am leery of relying on it for primary storage as I tend to knock things over and it has already crashed once and I lost a lot of the files. I am looking at a 1 TB internal hard drive, but am concerned if storing so much data will affect the computer's performance. Should I also increase RAM from 4 to 8 GB (the limit for my 64-bit, Windows 7, Asus A54C laptop)?

• Operating System Not Found - BIOS recognizes, Live OS doesn't (Laptop)

  Here's the deal: I have a multi-partitioned hard drive on my laptop set up with GRUB. I got a blue-screen while working on Windows 7 and when rebooting I got the Operating System Not Found error message. I rebooted the computer once again and entered the BIOS setup just to see if recognized my HDD - it did. Next step for me was booting a Live CD and seeing if I could repair GRUB or at least check if something changed on the partitions, but it doesn't seem to recognize anything there. Tried blkid, fdisk -l, not even GParted can see it. What should I do?

• How can I design good continuous (seamless) tiles?

  I have trouble designing tiles so that when assembled, they don't look like tiles, but look like a homogeneous thing. For example, see the image below: Even though the main part of the grass is only one tile, you don't "see" the grid; you know where it is if you look a bit carefully, but it is not obvious. Whereas when I design tiles, you can only see "oh, jeez, 64 times the same tile," like in this image: (I took this from another GDSE question, sorry; not be critical of the game, but it proves my point. And actually has better tile design that what I manage, anyway.) I think the main problem is that I design them so they are independent, there is no junction between two tiles if put closed to each other. I think having the tiles more "continuous" would have a smoother effect, but can't manage to do it, it seems overly complex to me. I think it is probably simpler than I think once you know how to do it, but couldn't find a tutorial on that specific point. Is there a known method to design continuous / homogeneous tiles? (My terminology might be totally wrong, don't hesitate to correct me.)

• Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• How to diagnose Ubuntu CPU spikes / IO wait?

  I'm using Ubuntu and every couple minutes it goes unresponsive for a half second to a full second, which isn't normally a problem but makes trying to code extremely frustrating when your trying to hit backspace or navigate the code and nothing is happening. The problem is, the freezes are so brief that top doesn't have time to show me what is spiking the CPU (assuming something is, but I don't know what else could cause this). Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this performance issue? Edit: I've tried login in with Gnome Classic (No Effects) instead of Unity but it still freezes up every once in awhile. Edit: The CPU graph doesn't seem to be showing any actual spikes so it seems you were right and my original diagnosis of CPU spikes being the problem was incorrect, I now suspect IO wait. I don't recall this happening for the brief few weeks I had Windows 7 Starter running on it though, which leads me to believe it isn't (just?) the hardware.. is there anything I can tweak to improve this? • A design for watching IPTV anywhere in the house?

  I'm currently getting TV and internet via IP to my house. The service comes into an ISP-supplied Router (ST585) which is in turn connected to an IPTV box. I need to replace the router, as it's port forwarding seems to be broken, so I was thinking of getting a box with an IGMP proxy. I once mistakenly got a non-IGMP box, with the result that the internet worked, but the IPTV didn't. The trouble is, I have no idea how to set up the IPTV part of the installation. I do have a copy of the ST585 configuration, but it doesn't look anything like the Cisco stuff that I learned about at CCNA. What are the steps necessary to reproduce the IGMP setup? I was thinking of WireSharking the communications on the network, but I suppose I'd need a hub for that? As a bonus, since the packets are coming in with the TV signal, is it possible to mess with the IGMP setup so I can watch TV anywhere in the house?

• Remote Desktop fails with no error

  Recently, I've been having problems connecting to a remote machine via RDP. I can connect fine exactly once, but all subsequent attempts fail until the remote machine is rebooted. I seem to authenticate properly, but the RDP logon dialog disappears after showing, "Configuring remote session..." for a few seconds. No errors or other useful info is written either to my screen or the Event Logs of the two machines involved. I've tried disabling remote sound as others have suggested, with no success. I'm still investigating a solution, but would appreciate any thoughts. Fortunately, I can reboot the box remotely w/o causing any problems, but this is a less than ideal workaround.

• Chrome and Firefox freeze when I begin typing

  Last night, chrome began freezing whenever I tried to type anything. After a fresh reinstall the problem went away but it is back again this morning. I installed Firefox as a substitute browser but it has the same problem. I cannot even get past the homepage because typing in the u r l bar freezes both programs. Last night internet explorer froze once too, but it has not happened since. Disabling shock-wave does not have any affect on the problem. Because it is happening across multiple browsers, I do not believe it to be caused by any extensions I have installed on Chrome. I also tried running Chrome as a new user and the problem still occurred. I can open any apps or web sites that are on my homepage, but as soon as I try to type anything the program freezes. Any ideas?

• BSOD when playing Portal 2 using ATI Radeon 4800 on H61M/U3S3 mobo

  playing Portal 2 will always give me blue screen of death, usually after about 10 minutes of playing. BSOD references atikmpag.sys. I have tried several updates for graphics driver and through ATI Catalyst Center. I have updated the motherboard BIOS. My RAM is OK. Nothing changes. I had previously run the game fine, then I removed my video card to use on-board graphics once, and after re-installing the video card, I get this problem every time. I am using: ATI Radeon 4800 ASRockH61M/U3S3 motherboard Windows 7 64-bit

• SQL SERVER – FIX ERROR – Cannot connect to . Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)

  Just a day ago, I was doing small attempting to connect to my local SQL Server using IP 127.0.0.1. The IP is of my local machine and SQL Server is installed on the local box as well. However, whenever I try to connect to the server it gave me following strange error. Cannot connect to 127.0.0.1. Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) The reason was indeed strange as I was trying to connect from local box to local box and it said my login was from an untrusted domain. As my system is not part of any domain, this was really confusing to me. Another thing was that I have been always able to connect always using 127.0.0.1 to SQL Server and this was a bit strange to me. I started to think what did I change since it  last time I connected to SQL Server. Suddenly I remembered that I had modified my computer’s host file for some other purpose. Solution: I opened my host file and immediately added entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost. Once I added it I was able to reconnect to SQL Server as usual. The location of the host file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You will find file with the name hosts in it, make sure to open it with notepad. If you are part of a domain and your organization is using active directory, make sure that your account is added properly to active directory as well have proper security permissions to execute the task.   Sunday's the day that everything comes together, but there's always that last minute scramble. Here are a few peeks at what everyone's doing, and may still be doing far into the night. This is the team putting the final touches on the Hands-On Lab room for  HOL10201, "Reduce Risk with Oracle Solaris Access Control to Restrain Users and Isolate Applications". This should be a great learning experience--plus it's a chance to meet up with some of the top Solaris security people, including Glenn Faden and Darren Moffat.
