• What makes you look like a bad developer (ie a hacker) [on hold]

  This comes from a lot of people about me, so I have to look at myself. So I would wonder what make one a bad developer (ie a hacker). These are a few things about me I used IDE intensively, all features, you name it: auto-completion, refactoring, quick fixes, open type, view hierarchy, API documentation, etcc When I deal with writing code for a project in domain I am not used to (I can't have fluency in this, this is new), I only have a very rough high level ideas. I don't use the standard modeling diagrams for early detail planning. Unorthodox diagrams that I invented when I need to draw the design in details. I don't use UML or similar, I find them not enough. I divide the sorts of diagram I drew into 3 types. Very high level diagrams which probably can be understood by almost anybody. Data entity diagram used for modeling data objects only (like ER diagrams and tree for inheritances and composition). Action diagrams for agents/classes and their interactions on data objects they contain. Constantly changing the interface (public methods) between interacting agents/classes if the need arises. I am more refrained when the interface and the module have matured Write initial concept code in a quick hackie way just so that the module works in the general cases so that I can play around with it. The module will be re-factored intensively after playing around so I could see more corner cases that I couldn't or (wouldn't want) anticipate before writing code. Using JUnit for integration-like test by using TestSuite class and ordering Unit test classes in the suite Using debugger almost anytime there is a problem instead of reading the code Constantly search on the internet for how to do some thing with some library that I haven't used a lot. So judgment, am I a bad developer? a hacker? Put in other words, to make sure this is not considered off-topic: - Is this bad practice to make your code too agile during incubating/prototyping phase of software development - Is it bad practice to use JUnit for integration testing, (I know there are other framework for integration testing, but those frameworks are for a specific products, not general)

• Domain model integration using JSON capable DTOs

  I'm a bit confused about architectural choices for the java/web-applications world. The background is I have a system with certain hardware components (that introduce system immanent active behavior) and a configuration database for system meta and HW-components configuration data (these are even usually self contained, since the HW-components persist configuration data anyway). For realization of the configuration/status data exchange protocol with the HW-components we have chosen the Google Protobuf format, which works well for the directly wired communication with these components. Now we want to develop an abstract model (domain model) for those HW-components and I have the feeling that a plain Java class model would fit best for this (c++ implementation seems to have too much implementation/integration overhead with viable language-bridge interfaces). Google Protobuf message definitions could still serve well to describe DTO objects used to interact with a domain model API. But integrating Google Protobuf messages client side for e.g. data binding in the current view doesn't seem to be a good choice. I'm thinking about some extra serialization features, e.g. for JSON based data exchange with the views/controllers. Most lightweight solutions seem to involve a python based presentation layer using JSON based data transfer (I'm at least not sure to be fully informed about this). Is there some lightweight (applicable for a limited ARM Linux platform) framework available, supporting such architecture to realize a web-application?

• HDMI & Display Port stopped work on 11.10

  After upgraded two laptops to 11.10, HDMI and Display ports stopped to work. Symptoms on each (btw. it used to work with 11.04 on both): laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 (HDMI, Intel GMX 3100): after HDMI cable is plugged in, screen is corrupted (no panel, no icons), system is unresponsive, TV set receives some signal, but only blue screen and some regular ticks can be heard. Unplugging the cable system recovers. No logs were checked. Thinkpad W510 (DisplayPort, NVidia). Simple "Screens" utility does not recognizes TV set, but this is something to do with the differences between Nvidia driver API and the one expected from the utility, as far I could spot on the net. However, using Nvidia-settings, TV is recognized, but cannot be enabled and used. Beside that, touch pad freezes after HDMI2DisplayPort connector is plugged in the laptop (not immediately, but after few seconds - probably after some handshake with the TV set crashes). It is strange that no such bug reports can be found on the net. So, I guess it is something wrong on our laptops only, but would appreciate some hints (i.e. any known changes recently related to HDMI, Display Port, X-Windows, kernel... wherever I should take a look and fix the issue).

• Storing a pass-by-reference parameter as a pointer - Bad practice?

  I recently came across the following pattern in an API I've been forced to use: class SomeObject { public: // Constructor. SomeObject(bool copy = false); // Set a value. void SetValue(const ComplexType &value); private: bool m_copy; ComplexType *m_pComplexType; ComplexType m_complexType; }; // ------------------------------------------------------------ SomeObject::SomeObject(bool copy) : m_copy(copy) { } // ------------------------------------------------------------ void SomeObject::SetValue(const ComplexType &value) { if (m_copy) m_complexType.assign(value); else m_pComplexType = const_cast<ComplexType *>(&value); } The background behind this pattern is that it is used to hold data prior to it being encoded and sent to a TCP socket. The copy weirdness is designed to make the class SomeObject efficient by only holding a pointer to the object until it needs to be encoded, but also provide the option to copy values if the lifetime of the SomeObject exceeds the lifetime of a ComplexType. However, consider the following: SomeObject SomeFunction() { ComplexType complexTypeInstance(1); // Create an instance of ComplexType. SomeObject encodeHelper; encodeHelper.SetValue(complexTypeInstance); // Okay. return encodeHelper; // Uh oh! complexTypeInstance has been destroyed, and // now encoding will venture into the realm of undefined // behaviour! } I tripped over this because I used the default constructor, and this resulted in messages being encoded as blank (through a fluke of undefined behaviour). It took an absolute age to pinpoint the cause! Anyway, is this a standard pattern for something like this? Are there any advantages to doing it this way vs overloading the SetValue method to accept a pointer that I'm missing? Thanks!

• Can you recommend a game server for a facebook board game?

  I am seeking a game server that will scale well. All commercial and/or free software alternatives are welcome. Game will be a boardgame that is similar to poker. Some technical details are listed below. There will be a table which consists of 4 people, to send them message I need a channel manager. A table will be ready to play for at least 5 minutes. There should be a reliable channel manager. People will wait for some time(i.e.) and if they are not playing they will be kicked by server, so there will be a reliable timed task queue to execute some tasks. It should be quick enough to response and show the changes to all 4 people on that table simultaneously.To achive this server should have a powerfull I/O library. I think to use inmemory to have quick response times, but it comes with scalability problems. And some variables should be thread safe so a variable should be thread safe between multiple nodes. Flash(AS3) and Unity (.Net 2.0 C# mono) client API's should be available for socket connection. PS: I am using Reddwarf server, it lacks of documentation and multiple node.

Points of Note The database tables are created in the SimpleMembershipInitializer class, when you first run your app using Entity Framework 5 migration functionality. The tables created are webpages_Membership, webpages_OAuthMembership, webpages_Roles, webpages_UsersInRoles, UserProfile. Web.config settings don’t seem to be needed.   Scott Hanselman on Universal Providers was also useful if not somewhat out dated. • Are my negative internship experiences representative of the real world? [closed]

  I'm curious if my current experiences as an intern are representative of actual industry. As background, I'm through the better part of two computing majors and a math major at a major university; I've aced every class and adored all of them, so I'd like to think that I'm not terrible at programming. I got an internship with one of the major software companies, and half way through now I've been shocked at the extraordinarily low quality of code. Comments don't exist, it's all spaghetti code, and everything that could be wrong is even worse. I've done a ton of tutoring/TAing, so I'm very used to reading bad code, but the major industry products I've been seeing trump all of that. I work 10-12 hours a day and never feel like I'm getting anywhere, because it's endless hours of trying to figure out an undocumented API or determine the behavior of some other part of the (completely undocumented) product. I've left work hating the job every day so far, and I desperately want to know if this is what is in store for the rest of my life. Did I draw a short straw on internships (the absurdly large paychecks imply that it's not a low quality position), or is this what the real world is like?

• Is it okay to just add a page or two PHP page to add some functionality to a Drupal site?

  I'm not familiar with Drupal, really. I can dig around the admin interface and navigate the directories and find the files that I need to just fine as well. What I'm really not familiar with is adding modules or extending modules. The site currently takes an order and sets up recurring payments through Ubercart and uses Authorize.net as a gateway. Right now, when a payment fails, a single e-mail gets sent out to the admin. We'd like to extend it to send an e-mail to the user and let them change their payment information through another page on the site. Authorize has a service called Silent Post URL that basically just posts a carbon copy in XML to whatever URL you give it. We'd like to accept that XML, deserialize it, parse the data, send a notice to the user and give them the page for updating their information. So, I guess it'll be two PHP pages. One for the XML API call from Authorize.net, and then one for the page for the users' to update their payment information. Could I just create two simple pages each handling their own tasks, or should I check out properly extending a module? If it's appropriate for me to write up the pages and not have to hook them into the module, what would be the best way to handle setting up what needs to get done? (The most experience I've had with extending a PHP site has been hacking away at someone else' poorly constructed, custom framework, so if anyone has any good resources perhaps on PHP best practices that they could share through a PM or a comment, I'd appreciate It) (Also, I'm still getting the hang of Stack Exchange, so if this isn't appropriate please let me know. So, I need to post a string in the json(string in $json) format to a url(url specified in $url var), but I am getting the following error String index out of range: -1 I understand that the error arises when requesting for an index that isn't there, but I dont find how that applies in this case. • Reliance on the compiler

  I've been programming in C and C++ for some time, although I would say I'm far from being expert. For some time I've been using various strategies to develop my code such as unit tests, test driven design, code reviews and so on. When I wrote my first programs in BASIC I typed in long listings before finding they would not run and they were a nightmare to debug. So I learnt to write a small bit and then test it. These days I often find myself repeatedly writing a small bit of code then using the compiler to find all the mistakes. That's OK if it picks up a typo but when you start adjusting the parameters types etc just to make it compile you can screw up the design. It also seems that the compiler is creeping into the design process when it should only be used for checking syntax. There's a danger here of over reliance on the compiler to make my programs better. Are there better strategies than this ? I vaguely remember some time ago an article on a company developing a type of C compiler where an extra header file also specified the prototypes. The idea was that inconsistencies in the API definition would be easier to catch if you had to define it twice in different ways.

  So I'm writing an abstraction layer that wraps a telephony RESTful service for sending text messages and making phone calls. I should build this in such a way that the low-level provider, in this case Twilio, can be easily swapped without having to re-code the higher level interactions. I'm using a package that is pre-built for Twilio and so I'm thinking that I need to create a wrapper interface to standardize the interaction between the Twilio service package and my application. Let us pretend that I cannot modify this pre-built package. Here are my questions: First off, do you think this is a good design? How could it be improved? Second, I'm having a hard time testing this because I need to mock out the Twilio package so that I'm not actually depending on Twilio's API for my tests to pass or fail. • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

  I am working on a quite complex web application in Go and I tried to stay in an MVC pattern. However, I ended up having a structure isomorphic to this: /boilerplate The usual boilerplate an application needs to survive in the wilderness /db Layer talking to an SQL DB /helpers Helpers /logic Backend logic, not directly affiliated with any routes, sessions etc. /templates View /web Glue between /logic and /templates. In more dynamic languages the size of /web would be next to zero. But Go doesn't exactly have a RoR integrated so I need a lot of helper structures to feed the templates with data, to process GET/POST parameters and session information. I remember once reading about patterns similar to MVC with one extra letter but Wiki-searching I couldn't find it right now. (BTW currently /logic also contains data retrieval from API services to fill some hash maps; this is no simple task, but that probably belongs into the model, right?) So question: is this structure considered sane? Or does it need some bending to be tagged MVC app?

• Parse JSON in C#

  I'm trying to parse some JSON data from the Google AJAX Search API. I have this URL and I'd like to break it down so that the results are displayed. I've currently written this code, but I'm pretty lost in regards of what to do next, although there are a number of examples out there with simplified JSON strings. Being new to C# and .NET in general I've struggled to get a genuine text output for my ASP.NET page so I've been recommended to give JSON.NET a try. Could anyone point me in the right direction to just simply writing some code that'll take in JSON from the Google AJAX Search API and print it out to the screen? EDIT: I think I've made some progress in regards to getting some code working using DataContractJsonSerializer. Here is the code I have so far.   I hope someone can assist me. I have RubyMine 2.0.2 installed on Windows 7 32 bit computer. Since a week ago (I presume it must have been after I have update some gems) I cant seem to debug form the IDE. I am trying to debug a rake task which I could before. Running the rake task normally works perfect, just debug doesnt. Its not just limited to the rake, I cant debug any ruby files. I've tried installing older versions of debug-ide and debug-base but to no success. I've tried it with ruby 1.8.7 and 1.8.6 on different computers but nothing.   The "matchit" plugin for vim is supposed to allow you to use the % key to jump between matching start/end tags when editing HTML, as well as /* and */ comment delimiters when editing other kinds of code. I've followed the exact instructions in ":help matchit", but % still doesn't work for me. It seems silly to ask "Why doesn't this work?" so instead I'm asking How can I diagnose the problem?
