• Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Partitions for dual boot install with Windows

  Following is the layout of the current partitions of my single hard drive viewed from Windows 7: C: has Windows 7 system files and my personal data; Q: for Lenovo recovery; SYSTEM_DRV: for Windows boot files; My goals are: to create another partition D: for my personal data, and dedicate C: for Windows system files and applications only. to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. D: will be shared between the two OSes. My questions are: Is it correct that the free space generated from shrinking C: will only be able to create an extended partition, since there are already 3 primary partitions? So must D: be one logical partition on the extended partition, just as the partitions for Ubuntu will be? Will this be bad sometime? If yes, other better solutions? What are the good utilities to accomplish the partition tasks? Can Ubuntu installer solely handle them? Or better to have some of the jobs done in Windows with some recommended softwares? • How can i compare Audio, what programming language should i use

  I have 2 audio files that are from almost the same source. But at some points there shifted a bit. Also the codecs does not match. I would like to make a program that takes a sample 2 - 4 seconds. And looks for it in the other file. (Most of the time it's not shifted more than 30 seconds). Than take the time and store it, Go ahead for a few seconds take a sample and find it again. This way i want to create a file where i can see on what points the file is shifted. For people who are more interested in what i want. I have a audio/video file speech and subtitles. But i have same speech from different sources with differs a bit in time. And i like to make a program that can correct the subtitle time for me. Enough about the problem I looked on the Internet for ways to compare audio files. Based on what i read comparing 2 audio files isn't that easy as i had hoped. • Can't Log Into Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, after turning on Ubuntu, I logged into a Gnome session. A few minutes later, I tried switching to Unity for a change. Unfortunately, the background and my desktop icons loaded, but the system bar and launcher failed to load even after several minutes. Unity had always worked fine for me. I then tried the guest account, and it worked fine on both Unity and Gnome. However, the problem with my account got worse; I couldn't log into any desktop at all anymore. I would type in my password and press enter and it would just sit there doing nothing. The computer no longer responded in any way, so I had to hold the power button and reboot. The same problem happened repeatedly. Earlier today, I tried to get on again. I found that I hadthe same problem, when I tried to log in, the computer no longer locked up, but instead flashed a black screen with theconsole output and what seemed to be an error message before returning to the log in screen. It was to quick for me to read, about 1/4-1/2 second. I'd really appreciate some help as I have some important files that are not backed up yet. I can't transfer the files to a new account, or even make a new account because I tried taking the password off my account so now I can't authenticate from the guest to perform root functions. • Eclipse will not install Android Support Package [migrated]

  I am an experienced programmer but new to Android, hence using Eclipse for the first time. Unfortunately I cannot get my first project off the ground. I get as far trying to create the project when the following sequence happens. A screen arrives titled 'Install Dependencies' telling me that the required version is 8 and the installed version is 'Not installed' I click on the Install/Upgrade button and something must happen because Android SDK Manager pops up and I get a whole series of 'Fetching:' messages. The next screen asks me to Choose Package to Install and the only option is Android Support Library, revision 10. This doesn't bother me as I presume 10 is better than 8 so I hit the Install button. This is where it all goes wrong as I get a red message saying: File not found: C:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk\temp\support_r10.zip (Access is denied). Sure enough, when I check this folder, it is empty. Now, something must have happened as as SDK Manager did a whole lot of fetching and must have put these files somewhere. I am quite happy to find them and put them in the correct folder but the question is what is the name of the files that I am looking for?

• How to fix GRUB on dualboot with Windows7 and Ubuntu?

  I am a relatively recent user of Linux. I had several releases of Ubuntu installed on my laptop working in dual-boot and never had any issues. Recently, I installed openSUSE because I thought it would be necessary for an assignment at my university. It turns out it wasn't so I returned to Ubuntu and decided to burn the new .iso to a CD and install it. The problem is that during installation process I almost for sure messed up with the partitions and now, whenever I tried to load Windows 7, it will tells me that a required device is inaccessible. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu again and now all I get is that I am redirected to the GRUB menu without any warnings. I tried creating a Windows Recovery Disk but it gives me Unexpected I/O error. I suspect it is because it was downloaded from the Internet and maybe some files weren't there. I tried everything without success, so I decided to ask here, in the hope I can receive some help and also learn how to help others with it in the future. EDIT: Apparentely, the box is locked, because, from what I understood after reading the boot-repair information, everything is fine with my windows boot-files... I still need some guidance though

• how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Can't boot to Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.10

  Here's what happened: I have 2 HDDs. 1st HDD is partitioned like this: C - Windows 7 D* - Empty drive where I installed Ubuntu E - Personal Files F - Personal Files 2nd HDD is partitioned like this: G - Personal Files *the D partition is originally part of the C partition. I resized it (using Easus Partition Master in Windows) and defragged it prior to installing Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu by booting to the Ubuntu Secure Remix CD, and chose the D partition to install Ubuntu. I did not create a swap drive, and I mounted the / to the D partition. I didnt know where to mount the others, so I just thought by mounting the / to D, it would be okay. After the long installation, upon rebooting, I can't access Windows AND Ubuntu. I get an infinite bootloop and eventually the choices to boot to Safe Modes, Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows normally. After failing in all of them, I placed the CD back and ran the Boot Repair. I chose the MBR 1st, it didn't work. I then chose the GRUB 2nd and now I was able to boot to the Ubuntu I installed, but not to my Windows 7! I'm using my newly installed Ubuntu while writing this. I hope you can help me. • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

• Installing 11.10 on flash drive failed

  This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu. I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location. I prepared partitons by dragging a bar and allocating the size for the Ubuntu installation, and for other files. I set 3GB for ubuntu and 1GB for other files. The pen drive was partitioned and files installed on it. After sucess I ejected the CD to restart the PC to use the new OS. When it restarted I expected to be asked to select an OS to boot. But I could only boot with Windows XP. Properties of my flash drive show its total capacity is 1GB. The partitioned 3GB is missing. How can I boot with the USB stick? How can I get my 4GB USB stick back?

  This question is regarding using STSADM command to create new site collection in Active Directory Account creation mode. My setup is like this- I have 2 virtual PCs in a Windows XP Pro SP3 host. Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and is also the Database Server. The other VPC is the domain member and it is the IIS web server, POP/SMTP server and it has WSS 3.0 installed. I created a new site using the GUI in Central Admin page. For creating a site collection under the newly created site, I needed to use the STSADM command line tool since it cannot be done from Central Admin page in Active Directory Account creation mode. I have set the server and the client on the same machine (for now), win7-x64.   Hi, I have a peculiar Clearcase doubt. I cannot fully describe why I'm doing such a confusing architecture, but I need to do it (thanks to the mistake done by someone long back). Ok, here's a bit of detail: B1 is a contaminated branch where both my group's changes and another group's changes got mixed together so badly that there is no way of finding which code is whose). So the solution proposed is to create a new branch called B2 (at the same level as B1) and put all the unmodified code of the other group on it (The way to do that would be to merge B1 with B2 and then go about removing all changes from it till it becomes original). Then create a CR branch on B1 and keep only my group's newly added files or modified files on that branch. Finally create an integration branch out of B2 and merge the changes from CR branch of B1 to integration branch of B2. So here is what I did: (The use case is where I have dir D where file a, b and c are there. My group ended up modifying file a while b and c are not modified at all). There is a branch B1 on which there are files a, b and c. There is another branch B2. A merge is done from B1 to B2. Now B2 also has a, b and c. At this point both branch B1 and B2 are same. Now I delete file a from branch B2 (rmname). Now B2 has b and c only. I put a label to this branch called Label1. This makes the code with label Label1 as the unmodified code from other group. Now I create a sub branch called CR1 from B1 and delete all the files that are there in B2 branch (i.e b and c) such that it contains only the modified code from original code on it. In my case it is file a. At this point branch B2 with label Label1 has files b and c (those are unmodified code) and branch CR1 coming off B1 has only a (that is modified by us). Now I create another branch called integration branch that comes off B2 Label1. And then I do a merge of CR branch on to that expecting that it will have all three files a, b and c for me. All I'd need to do is to do a version tree view and see who modified what. But the problem I face is that since I had done a rmname of file a on branch B2 earlier to putting Label. The merge does not really take the file a from CR branch. How to I get around that problem. I want to selectively merge. Is it possible? sorry if it is a bad design. I'm not really conversant with Clear case and have limited options and time to clear some one else's mess.

• .htaccess blocking images on some internal pages

  I'm doing some web design for a friend and I noticed that everywhere else on her site images will load fine except for the subdirectory I'm working in. I looked in her .htaccess file and sure enough it is setup to deny people from stealing her images. Fair Enough, except the pages i'm working on are in her domain and yet I still get the 403 error.   Hello i am trying to use OpenCV 2.4.2 in Matlab 2012b. I have tried those actions: downloaded OpenCV 2.4.2 used CMake on opencv folder using Visual Studio 10 and Visual Studio 10 Win64 compiler built Debug and Release version with Visual Studio first without any other option and then with D_SCL_SECURE=1 specified for every project changed Matlab's mexopts.bat and adding new lines refering to library and include (see bottom for mexopts.bat content) with Visual Studio 10 compiler tried to compile a simple file with a OpenCV library inclusion and all goes well. try to compile something that actually uses OpenCV commands and get errors.   My MSBuild command line is as follows: msbuild e:\code\myProject.csproj /p:Configuration=Debug /p:OutputPath=bin/Debug /p:Platform=x86 /p:PlatformTarget=x86 The project builds fine on my development machine in VS2010 but not with the command above. I am running Win 7 64 - Bit. I'm getting an error that says I don't have the Silverlight 4 SDK installed but I do. I"ve read some posts that you have to set the Platform=x86 but to no avail.   I am having a bit of a hard time providing localized strings for the UI in a small Silverlight 4 application. Upon further inspection I took apart the XAP resulted file, taken the resulted DLL file to Reflector and inspected the embedded resources. It only contains the default resource!!
