• Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting. • How do I configure Ubuntu's web applications? [closed]

  Ubuntu 12.10 has introduced among other things web applications that add launcher widgets to show, for example, unread Gmail message counts, twitter tweets, etc. While sites that support those widgets show notifications offering to install them, I can't seem to find how to configure them. I'm particularly interested in configuring Google mail desktop notification widget to only display unread counts for my inbox, and dismiss all other labels.

  Are you wanting a translation bookmarklet that just focuses on translating websites into English? Then you will want to take a look at the To English Bookmarklet. Get the Bookmarklet To install the To English Bookmarklet visit the webpage at Lifehacker (link below), grab the bookmarklet with your mouse, and drag it to your “Bookmarks Toolbar”. Now you are ready for one-click translation into English. To English in Action We decided to test our new bookmarklet on two different International Mozilla websites. The first one was in Swedish… One click and there it is. Notice that there is a “translation bar frame” that will still let you choose yet another language to translate the webpage into if you desire. Definitely a nice touch… Our second example was in Russian. Once again a single click and… The website is now in English. On this particular page the “central green graphic” was affected by the translation and the two sidebar buttons are “pre-made” but that is ok. You can read what you need to without any problems. • Make Firefox Show Google Results for Default Address Bar Searches

  Have you ever typed something incorrectly into the Firefox address bar, and then had it take you to a page you weren’t expecting? The reason is because Firefox uses Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” search, but you can change it. Scratching your head? Let’s take a quick run through what we’re talking about… Normally, if you typed in something like just “howtogeek” in the address bar, and then hit enter… you’ll be taken directly to the How-To Geek site. But how? Very simple! It’s the same place you would have been taken to if you typed “howtogeek” into Google, and then clicked the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which takes you to the first result. This is what Firefox does behind the scenes when you put something into the address bar that isn’t a URL. But what if you’d rather head to the search results page instead? Luckily, all you have to do is tweak an about:config parameter in Firefox. Just head into about:config in the address bar, and then filter for keyword.url like so: Double-click on the entry in the list, and then delete the &gfns=1 from the value. That’s the part of the URL that triggers Google to redirect to the first result. And now, the next time you type something into the address bar, either on purpose or because you typo’d it, you’ll be taken to the results page instead: About:Config tweaking is lots of fun. • Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!-grub rescue

  I have windows8 and ubuntu 13.10 installed on my laptop in dual-boot mode.While updating the disk management system my pc got hanged and on restarting it have grub rescue mode prompting on the screen.I tried ls (hd0,msdos_) all the commands but it shows 'unknown file system".i tried booting with ubuntu,boot-repair,superboot live cd but it shows "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" and hangs on the screen with two blinking lights.please suggest some help as soon as possible thanks in advance

• 3rd Party Tools: dbForge Studio for SQL Server

  I've been taking a look at some of the 3rd party tools for SQL Server. Today, I looked at DBForge Studio for SQL Server from the team at DevArt. Installation was smooth. I did find it odd that it defaults to SQL authentication, not to Windows but either works fine. I like the way they have followed the SQL Server Management Studio visual layout. That will make the product familiar to existing SQL Server Management Studio users. I was keen to see what the database diagram tools are like. I found that the layouts generated where quite good, and certainly superior to the built-in SQL Server ones in SSMS. I didn't find any easy way to just add all tables to the diagram though. (That might just be me). One thing I did like was that it doesn't get confused when you have role playing dimensions. Multiple foreign key relationships between two tables display sensibly, unlike with the standard SQL Server version. It was pleasing to see a printing option in the diagramming tool. I found the database comparison tool worked quite well. There are a few UI things that surprised me (like when you add a new connection to a database, it doesn't select the one you just added by default) but generally it just worked as advertised, and the code that was generated looked ok. I used the SQL query editor and found the code formatting to be quite fast and while I didn't mind the style that it used by default, it wasn't obvious to me how to change the format. In Tools/Options I found things that talked about Profiles but I wasn't sure if that's what I needed. The help file pointed me in the right direction and I created a new profile. It's a bit odd that when you create a new profile, that it doesn't put you straight into editing the profile. At first I didn't know what I'd done. But as soon as I chose to edit it, I found that a very good range of options were available. When entering SQL code, the code completion options are quick but even though they are quite complete, one of the real challenges is in making them useful. Note in the following that while the options shown are correct, none are actually helpful: The Query Profiler seemed to work quite well. I keep wondering when the version supplied with SQL Server will ever have options like finding the most expensive operators, etc. Now that it's deprecated, perhaps never but it's great to see the third party options like this one and like SQL Sentry's Plan Explorer having this functionality. I didn't do much with the reporting options as I use SQL Server Reporting Services. Overall, I was quite impressed with this product and given they have a free trial available, I think it's worth your time taking a look at it.

• running GL ES 2.0 code under Linux ( no Android no iOS )

  I need to code OpenGL ES 2.0 bits and i would like to do this and run the programs on my desktop for practical reasons. Now, i already have tried the official GLES SDK from ATI for my videocard but it not even runs the examples that comes with the SDK itself, i'm not looking for performance here, even a software based rendering pipeline could be enough, i just need full support for GLES 2.0 and GLSL to code and run GL stuff. There is a reliable solution for this under Ubuntu Linux ?

• Ubuntu failed to detect monitor and very low resolution?

  I tried different versions of Ubuntu from 11.04 to 11.10 beta, but got same problem. My desktop pc configuration is, - intel core i5 2400 - DH67BL Motherboard - Inbuilt motherboard graphics - No extra graphics card attached - Acer-H193HQV 18.5" Monitor - 2GB RAM - 250GB Harddisk Problem : Ubuntu can't detect my monitor and saying it Unknown. Moreover, monitor's original resolution is 1366x768 but in the list of resolution there is only 1024x768 and 800x600 are there.
