• Is rotating the lead developer a good or bad idea?

  I work on a team that has been flat organizationally since it's creation several months ago. My manager is non-technical and this means that our whole team is responsible for decision-making. My manager is beginning to realize that there are several benefits to having a lead developer, both for his sake (a single point of contact and single responsible party for tasks) and ours (dispute resolution, organized technical guidance, etc.). Because the team has been flat, one concern is that picking one lead developer may discourage the others. A non-developer suggested to my manager that rotating the lead developer is a possible way to avoid this issue. One developer would be lead one month, another the next, and so on. Is this a good idea? Why or why not? Keep in mind that this means all developers — All developers are good, but not necessarily equally suited to leadership. And if it is not, suppose I am likely the best candidate for lead developer — how do I recommend that we avoid this approach without looking like it's merely for selfish reasons? (In other words, the team is small enough that anyone recommending a single leader is likely to appear to be recommending themselves — especially those who have been part of the team longer.)

• One network, two macbooks, one is fast and the other is slow

  I really need help for my friend. I know next to nothing about computers. My roommate and I both have macbook pros from the same year running OS X, are both connecting wirelessly to the same xfinity wifi, and while mine runs perfectly fine, my roommate complains that his works very slowly and times out every few seconds. I can't seem to figure out why this is. He is trying to get me to switch internet providers because he is convinced that it is their problem, but this cannot possibly be the issue since it works great on mine. He has an xbox hooked up to the wifi that he says also works poorly. I really can't see switching providers given that I am experiencing absolutely zero problems. How can I help my friend?

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

• Should I use my ISP's DNS, or Google's 8.8.8.8?

  It seems like a good idea to use Google's public DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 because it's really fast -- much faster than my own ISP's DNS! -- and probably more reliable, too. That seems like a ridiculously quick win for me, and much easier to remember. Assuming we're not all "tin foil hat" about Google, why shouldn't everybody use Google DNS? Note: I've seen this question, but I don't want a comparison to OpenDNS. This is about everyday use by everyday people in their homes. Update: I seem to have put my hand in a wasps' nest of privacy concerns. I appreciate the issue, but I was expecting a more technology-oriented discussion...

• C#.NET (AForge) against Java (JavaCV, JMF) for video processing

  I'm starting to get really confused looking deeper and deeper at video processing world and searching for optimal choices. This is the reason to post this and some other questions to try and navigate myself in the best possible way. I really like Java, working with Java, coding with Java, at the same time C# is not that different from Java and Visual Studio is maybe the best IDE I've been working with. So even though I really want to do my projects in Java so I can get better and better Java programmer at the same time I'm really attract to video processing and even though I'm still at the beginning of this journey I want to take the right path. So I'm really in doubt could Java be used in a production environment for serious video processing software. As the title says I already have been looking at maybe the two most used technologies for video processing in Java - JMF and JavaCV and I'm starting to think that even they are used and they provide some functionality, when it comes to real work and real project that's not the first thing that comes to once mind, I mean to someone that have a professional opinion about this. On the other hand I haven't got the time to investigate .NET (c# specificly) options but even AForge looks a lot more serious library then those provided for Java. So in general -either ways I'm gonna spend a lot of time learning some technology and trying to do something that make sense with it, but my plan is at the end the thing that I'll eventually come up to be my headline project. To represent my skills and eventually help me find a job in the field. So I really don't want to spend time learning something that will give me the programming result I want but at the same time is not something that is needed in the real world development. So what is your opinion, which language, technology is better for this specific issue. Which one worths more in terms that I specified above?

• unity, seeing all instances of same open application windows on all virtual desktop

  I noticed this strange issue with unity. I am using 12.04. The desktop has 4 virtual desktops, which I can switch between using the 'workspace switcher' which is very nice. But I noticed the following: When I have 2 instances of the same app (say 2 different firefox windows, or 2 different terminal windows), in 2 different virtual desktops, then I click on the icon for that application located on the launcher panel (the left long strip with icons on it), then I see the application comes into focus. Then when I click again right away (on the same icon on the launcher), then now all instances of this application that are open come into ONE view (may be on was on desktop 1, and the other was on desktop 3 for example) and then I can now click on the one instance window that I want to select to use. This is all very nice actually. But this does NOT work for all applications! I just tried it, and it worked for firefox, and for gedit and for the gnome terminal. I have one firefox window open in virtual desktop 1, and another window open in virtual desktop 2. I clicked once on the firefox icon, then again, and both windows came into the main desktop and I was able to select which one to use. When I tried the same thing on dolphin file manager, which I also had 2 windows (instances) of it open in 2 different virtual desktops, this behavior did not happen. I clicked again, and nothing happened. Only one remained in focus. So I had to fo look for the second dolphin window the hard way. It looks like some apps are supported by this feature and some are not. How does one make it so that all applications are supported like this? This is a very handy feature. Is it a configuration item somewhere? thanks

• Applescript cannot find sed during application install

  I am attempting to install an application, but the installer fails with the following error message: sh: sed: command not found and there is an Edit and OK button in the dialog, so I click the Edit button which launches the AppleScript Editor to show me the script that is executing. Running it from within the Editor doesn't work either. The first line of the script with sed is set currdir_modified to do shell script ("echo " & currdir & " | sed 's/ /\\ /g'") I went to the terminal to make sure sed was available, and it is, in /usr/bin. This sounds like a path problem, but I am not sure where to go from here. What can I do to further troubleshoot or solution this issue? I have successfully installed this app on another mac running the same OS X version, so it is specific to my mac and the application's support is not providing any more help because it is my mac's problem, not theirs.

• Sql Server Prevent Saving Changes That Require Table to be Re-created

  When working with SQL Server Management studio, if you use the Design view of a table and attempt to make a change that will require the table to be dropped and re-added, you may receive an error message like this one: Saving changes is not permitted.  The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created.  You have either made changes to a table that cant be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. In truth, its quite likely that you didnt enable such an option, despite the error dialogs accusations, as it is enabled by default when you install SQL Management Studio.  You can learn more about the issue in the KB article, Error message when you try to save a table in SQL Server 2008: Saving changes is not permitted. Warning: As the above article states, it is not recommended that you turn off this option (at least not permanently), as it will ensure that you do not accidentally change the schema of a table such that data is lost.  Do so at your peril. The simplest way to bypass this error is to go into Option Designers and uncheck the option Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation.  See the screenshot below. The main reason why you will see this error is if you attempted to do any of the following to the table whose design you are saving: Change the Allow Nulls setting for a column Reorder columns Change any columns data type Add a new column The recommended workaround is to script out the changes to a SQL file and execute them by hand, or to simply write out your own T-SQL to make the changes. • Asterisk: Forcing a sip peer to connect via ipv6?

  I've got an asterisk server that connects to an upstream provider over a WAN. The upstream provider supports both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity, and the asterisk server is behind a NAT. When asterisk connects to the upstream sip peer via IPv6, everything works perfectly. The issue I have is that when I configure the asterisk server IPv6 address via DHCPv6, a race condition means that asterisk sometimes ends up attempting to contact the upstream peer via IPv4 (the SIP DNS name has both A and AAAA records). This is because asterisk starts up before the system has a valid IPv6 address. The connection does not work via IPv4 because of the NAT. Is there a way of configuring the peer to specify that it should only be contactable over IPv6? I guess it might be possible to hack together a firewall rule to deny all IPv4 traffic to that IP, but it'd be easier to configure this within asterisk itself.

• OSX: iTunes won't play .ogg files over shared library

  I have an OSX 10.5 box that is sharing its iTunes library and another 10.6 box connecting to that library through iTunes. It works as expected except for ogg files. Those ogg files are visible and selectable in the shared library but will not play through the share on the client machine. If I move the ogg files to the client machine they play locally just fine. They also play locally on the host machine. They just won't play through the iTunes share. Is this a bug or some other known issue? Is there a fix, short of converting all ogg files to mp3?

• Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

  I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space. • Gnome-Network-Manager Config File Migration

  I think I have an issue with gnome-network-manager, I used to have a lot of connections configured, Wireless, Wired and VPN. After upgrading to 12.04 (from 11.10) I lost every configuration. I realized that the configs that used to be saved in $HOME/.gconf/system/networking/connections now are being saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/.   I am writing this after checking almost all the posts but none of those solved my problem. I am trying to install mencoder to process some videos but there are strange errors coming. • How do I handle having too many links on a webpage because of my menu

  I am developing a website that has a drop-down menu at the top of it. The Menu has around 100 links in it that are repeated on every page. Every page also has some number of links below the Menu that may or may not be in the menu itself. My issue is that Google says they generally don't like pages with more than 100 links on them. Is there any way to change the links on the menu so that they no longer "count" towards my max of 100 links? It seems like there should be an easy way to do this but their really doesn't seem to be. the rel=nofollow still counts towards the number of links on the page at least according to Google, so what other options do I have? I looked into where the 100 comes from and I found that it used to be here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#2 but that is no longer the case. I found a more definitive and frankly muddier answer here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/questions-answers-with-googles-spam-guru from Matt Cutts from 2007. Long story short, in 2007 they still felt 100 links was a good number but they stated you could go far beyond that. In fact, they said that pages with high PageRank could have 2-300. It did sound like having many links could reduce the PageRank of the page with all of the links or possibly all of the items linked to. Also, I know IIS7's SEO 1.0 toolkit suggests that pages should have no more than 250 links.

  I remember sometime ago, I uninstall an application called starfield, but probably I didn't do a clean uninstall. Now in Console, I always see a annoying message: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4441]) Exited with exit code: 1 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds com.apple.launchd[1] (com.starfield.backupservice[4442]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Starfield/BackupService/offSyncService", ...): No such file or directory I know it could be something wrong with my installation, how can I do a clean uninstall now, or just fix this issue, I don't want to see this message from my console any more.   Thanks to everyone who attended the Chief Security Officer Roundtable in New York last week. We were lucky to have Dennis Brixus, CSO of McGraw-Hill  as a guest speaker. In addition, Jeff Henley, provided a board level perspective on security. Amit Jasuja discussed Oracle's security formula.  A few takeaways from Jeff's talk that were interesting: Security is a board level issue. The challenge at the board level is that boards have short attention span. The CSO needs to be vigilant in educating the board on the strategic importance of security. Every CSO needs to think about cost. The CSO has to look at the economics of security and demonstrate fiduciary responsibility. We have to think of security as a business enabler. Security is the enabler that helps us expand into new markets and connect better with our customers and partners. While the CSO can't prevent every threat, we have to expect the CSO to have a plan. • Missing disc when installing windows 7

  Hi, when I was installing windows 7 on my new bought computer it asked me on which disc I would like to install the OS on, either the 1 tera byte disc or the ssd disc, I chose to install it on the ssd disc. But now when I have installed the OS, the 1 tera byte disc isn't visible in "my computer" and I don't know how to access it, I didn't do anything strange in the installation, that by the way is idiot secure. So my question, what do you think have happend and how do you believe that this issue is solved? Regards Anders

• Ubuntu not shutting down ( going to black screen ) 12.04

  I am currently using a USB persistent install of ubuntu. its a simple 4GB drive with a 2.8GB partition ( casper-rw storage partition ). I setup an administrator account and set it to login automatically. I also removed ubiquity to simply use this as a go anywhere install. Heres my issue. Im logged in as my account, and I click the top right gear and select "shut down". Text pops up showing its quitting processes.. etc. and then goes to the plymouth animation. But... The screen goes black, and then it goes to the login screen. Now when im at the login screen i go into terminal ( alt+F2 ) and dont you know, im logged in as Ubuntu. so then I try the following: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo shutdown now It goes to the plymouth screen again as if its shutting down, AND the screen goes black once again but the computer has not turned off, as in the usb is still flashing the light, the fans are still on, the only thing off is the screen. Is this a bug? If not maybe i did something wrong? Perhaps its that I made an account but... if there is a work around for this please let me know. Thanks again, Fox

• Try out ubuntu on thinkpad x40 (via usb)?

  I am trying to try out ubuntu (i,e, install it within windows) on my thinkpad x40. I followed the instructions on how to create a bootable usb (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download). No problem. The issue I have now is that th eusb ports on my x40 were burned before (common problem with the machine), i.e. do not work. So I got a USB notebook card from belkin. However it does not seem to recognize the usb stick from bios, thus I cannot boot from it. I also do not have a cd rom. Then tried to run wubi from the usb stick, briefly appears in task manager, no further action. So I tried it with wubi.exe, but same thing. Downloaded it to desktop, run it, briefly appears in the task manager under processes, no further action. Any one idea? I have enough memory and enough freed hd space. Thanks. Oliver

• systemctl enable differs from systemctl start, how?

  I am running an Arch Linux (latest, up-to-date) box, and attempting to get MySQL to start at boot. With the systemd package installed I have systemctl available, and as such I can do things like this: systemctl start mysqld.service systemctl [stop|status|restart] mysqld.service That's all fine, and works great when I want to start/stop manually, however, when it comes to getting it to start at boot (by using 'enable' on systemctl, I get some nasty output): [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl enable mysqld.service Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory Obviously, since the other commands work just fine, I'm seriously confused by this and have spent a good while trying to figure it out... systemctl status outputs this: [root@rudivarch ~]# systemctl status mysqld.service mysqld.service Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/mysqld) Active: inactive (dead) since Tue, 31 Jan 2012 15:32:28 +0000; 1min 25s ago Process: 589 ExecStop=/etc/rc.d/mysqld stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 257 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/mysqld start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/mysqld.service Anybody have any ideas as to why 'enable' doesn't work?

  There is a issue while connecting from new Windows 8.1 Clients to SQL Server 2008 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. The SQL Service running under account Domain\mssqlservice on a machine thats works fine I get this output from setspn -l domain\mssqlservice C:\>setspn -l domain\mssqlservice Registrierte Dienstprinzipalnamen (SPN) für CN=MSSQLService,CN=Users,DC=domain, DC=local,DC=tld: MSSQLSvc/mssql.domain.local.tld:1433 MSSQLSvc/mssql.domain.local.tld MSSQLSERVER/mssql.domain.local.tld:1433 On a windows 8.1 machine that don't work I get this output: C:\>setspn -l domain\msssqlservice FindDomainForAccount: Fehler beim Aufrufen von DsGetDcNameWithAccountW mit dem R ückgabewert 0x0000054B. Konto kockiren wurde nicht gefunden. On this Post I found a solution but, I can't change the Service Account who runs the SQL Service. Some application need this service delegation. But how I can realize that it works on my Windows 8.1 Clients?

  Howdie Scenario: Allow developers to submit new application packages to a market server. Developers run a bash script which contains a cURL call to market server (localhost/market/submit/$app-name). The submit script on the server creates a new folder in existing svn server with the name of the submitted app. Script on dev side waits for HTTP to issue a success message and then do a svn checkout in dev local machine. Problem: The submit script on the market server failed to create new svn directory through code: echo `svnadmin mkdir -m 'added new package $package' http://localhost/market/packages/$package`; this does not echo nothing and when I go on http://localhost/market/packages, the folder has not been added and the revision number has not been incremented. I've tried from a terminal in market server chown root:www-data /usr/bin/svnadmin but still no luck. Somebody has come acrosss similar problem? Any solutions? Thanks!   What is the best way to submit a patch to fix all the damage that LP: #600941 causes? I ask because LP: #600941 was put into every version of Ubuntu still supported at this time. Should I pick a particular version and run ubuntu-bug on it? Should that version be the LTS or Oneiric or Precise (how can I get Precise if I need it?) The story is that after it was pushed out all of our systems started experiencing Nagios nrpe restart failures. Commands like /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart would cause nrpe to stop but not restart. I tracked this down to the way that the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script is calling start-stop-daemon. The issue is that the "stop" stanza in the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script first calls start-stop-daemon which sends SIGTERM to nrpe and then waits only for one second. If nrpe has not exited by that time the pid file will still exist and the /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server script will remove it. Worse if /etc/init.d/nagios-nrpe-server restart is used not only will the pid file be removed, the attempt to restart nrpe will fail provided that the nrpe daemon is still tardy in shutting down. The attempt to start under those circumstances will fail because nrpe will still be bound to a socket and the second attempt at binding will cause the nrpe startup to abort. They should have wondered why there was a comment about "sometimes the pid file does not get removed". They should have tested on systems that have a heavy load and therefore slow nrpe response times. The fix is to add --retry 10 or such to the invocation of start-stop-daemon ... --stop ... Thanks

  Hi I’m running in Windows Small Server 2011 server standard (192.168.1.108), it’s my dhcp and dns server too, but suddenly all other users can’t get internet. My gateway is 192.168.1.1. After a lots of tested I can saw that my server can’t get into the router (192.168.1.1), and also into some others computers, but some other computers answer the ping command. In fact the same computer with the IP 192.168.1.9 didn't answer, but with the IP 192.168.1.63, it response! I have no routers, firewall, vlans or anything that disallow the traffic between computers, in fact when I changed the server IP address (192.168.1.109), I be able to ping the other computers and gateway, but if a back to the 192.168.1.108 the trouble comeback. • How do you implement NAT-T passthrough on a Juniper SRX series Firewall?

  We have 3 juniper SRX-100 firewalls, they are configured like so: FW1 - FW2 - INTERNET - FW3 We would like to create an IPSEC tunnel between FW3 and FW1 passing through FW2 preferably using NAT-T. Is this possible? FW1 and FW2 have some strict access rules only allowing 1 port connected (it's a DMZ with a server in) so we can't just create a route based vpn between FW1 and FW2 to forward the traffic (otherwise all traffic will be forwarded) We know the tunnel is fine because we have managed to test it between FW1 and FW3 (without FW2 in the middle) so we know that the issue is to do with the 'passthrough' on FW2. Essentially, the question is - What options do we need to select on FW2 to enable it to pass through the IPSEC traffic straight to FW1? Many thanks in advance
