• Incorrect viewport on monitor everytime computer is booted

  Hi, Every time I turn on my PC the viewport isn't aligned correctly on the screen - there is always a black strip on the right hand side. This is not a big issue as it can be resolved by pressing the menu button on the screen and doing a factory reset. However it is irritating having to do it every time. I am using a flat screen monitor with vga connections. The weird thing it never used to happen before with the tower Im using. Is potentially out of date drivers a problem? Thanks.

• Performance issues with visibility detection and object transparency

  I'm working on a 3d game that has a view similar to classic isometric games (diablo, etc.). One of the things I'm trying to implement is the effect of turning walls transparent when the player walks behind them. By itself this is not a huge issue, but I'm having trouble determining which walls should be transparent exactly. I can't use a circle or square mask. There are a lot of cases where the wall piece at the same (relative) position has different visibility depending on the surrounding area. With the help of a friend I came up with this algorithm: Create a grid around the player that contains a lot of "visibility points" (my game is semi tile-based so I create one point for every tile on the grid) - the size of the square's side is close to the radius where I make objects transparent. I found 6x6 to be a good value, so that's 36 visibility points total. For every visibility point on the grid, check if that point is in the player's line of sight. For every visibility point that is in the LOS, cast a ray from the camera to that point and mark all objects the ray hits as transparent. This algorithm works - not perfectly, but only requires some tuning - however this is very slow. As you can see, it requries 36 ray casts minimum, but most of the time 60-70 depending on the position. That's simply too much for the CPU. Is there a better way to do this? I'm using Unity 3D but I'm not looking for an engine-specific solution.

• Windows 7 does not recognize hdmi audio output

  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 on a Dell 545 MT with audio/video output via nVidia 9800 GTX+ to a flat screen television. I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled all the most recent drivers from nVidia & realtek, but the machine will not recognize the hdmi output as a sound device (as it did previously in Vista). I troubleshot the problem with Dell for over an hour and was then directed to their software specialists who want $130 to fix the issue! Can anyone offer some insights on this? I've searched nVidia and Windows 7 forums w/o success and would really like to get sound coming back through my tv speakers. Many Thanks.

• Moving case sensitive Linux files via Windows

  Hi the company I work for is currently trying to move a Magento installation from one server to another - however, the product images are saved in folders alphabetically indexed folders - but with an added twist, some of the letters are the same but have a different case - i.e. a, A, b, C, D, e, E, f, F, G, h, I That being the case, when we try to drag those files down from FTP in order to move them, Windows does not honour the case sensitive distinction and we are losing several image folders. Is there a simple workaround for this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated. regards SWK

• Ugly/Inconsistent Theming in Ubuntu Gnome 12.10

  Some applications are displaying really ugly widgets and menus. I think it's a GTK issue and perhaps more particularly, only applies to GTK2 apps but I'm not sure. The numerous questions on here that deal with GTK2 v GTK3 themes do not answer my problem. Here is my situation: I'm using Ubuntu Gnome with Gnome Shell (installed using the "upgrade" instructions, rather than fresh install) with the default Adwaita theme The reason I did an upgrade instead of fresh install is because I'm on a Macbook Air and there is no mac image/iso for Ubuntu Gnome Previously, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 12.10 and had no theming problems Now, apps like nautilus, rhythmbox, brasero, even third-party ones like Lightread look exactly as expected but other apps, including Firefox, Inkscape, GIMP, Libreoffice look awful. • basic picture editing software for Mac OS X

  I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows. I want to do very basic image editing, like cut a portion of an image, add some text label to the image, circle some part of the image, etc. I am downloading acornfree from this Url, but when executing acornfree, it said the Mac OS I am using is not supported. • Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

  I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

• Gitweb showing opposite colors for added and removed text

  Hi, I have installed gitweb in our servers. And it started showing the branches and the commit diffs. But the syntax highlighting is opposite particularly for added and removed text. Supposed added text should be in green and removed text should be red. But I am seeing an opposite one. I can hack gitweb.css to get my job done. But felt like knowing why such issue is happening? And what might be the proper fix. (if any one knows good themes for gitweb? please mention)

• Is it possible to run Modern UI Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run Windows 8 (Modern Apps) in Windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

• Ubuntu server 9.10 freezes up after ~10 minutes

  I just upgraded my Ubuntu server from 9.04 to 9.10 and after about 10 minutes it locks up. It won't respond to ping, can't ssh in and the terminal doesn't accept keyboard input. It does not have X installed. I then reformatted and installed it from scratch with the same results. There are two hard drives, the first is for the OS and the second is for media. The second has not changed, it is an ext3 formatted drive with one partition. I stopped random services (samba, ushare, transmission-daemon) to see if they were causing the issue, but it still locked up. I did a watch "dmesg|tail" until it locked up, but I didn't see anything. How can I troubleshoot this further? I don't want to downgrade. Machine specs: Dell Dimension 3000 Pentium 4 @3GHz 512M RAM

  I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems). • Debugging problems in Visual Studio 2005 - No source code available for the current location

  Hi all I've searched up and down Google for others with a similar problem, and while I can find the error I don't think that other people have the same base problem that I do. Basically, I had to create a project for a unit-testing environment in order to run this test suite. First, I add my original C file, compile, and then a test file (C++) is generated. I then exclude my original source from the project, include this test script (which includes the original source at the top), and then run. I can debug the test file fine, but when it jumps to the original C file I get the dreaded 'no source code available for the current location' error. Both files are located within the same location, and I compiled the original file without any issue. Anybody have any thoughts about this? Its driving me crazy!

• I'm receiving an SSL error in various browsers, but I can't find non-SSL content

  I'm receiving an error with my SSL connection. Using google chrome I see the following error: Your connection is encrypted with 128-bit encryption ... however this page includes other resources which are not secure I've scoured the source code, scripts and rendered code in the browser but cannot find where an http:// call is made. I've also used Fiddler2 to examine the traffic and everything is coming across via HTTPS. Has anyone run into this issue before and if so how did you go about finding the culprit. The website is running ASP.NET MVC3 in C#. The page in question is a simple payment page. The only external call is the google analytics tracking code. The page appears to load correctly, all images and scripts are in place.

• Routing to a Terminal Services Cluster

  I am trying to connect to a Load Balanced Windows 2008 R2 cluster using Remote Desktop Services. I have no trouble connecting to the the Servers' IP addresses (.253.16 and .253.17) or the Cluster address (.253.20) from inside the subnet (.253). The trouble is when I try to connect from the other subnet(.251). I can remote to the other non-clustered servers (.253.12 and .253.15) inside the .253 subnet from the .251 without an issue. I receive a ping reply from the cluster and other servers when I am on the .251 subnet. But when I try to connect via remote desktop it times out but only to any of the IPs on the cluster (.20,.17,.16). • Windows 7 "Not Responding"

  At my office we've got 2 Dell XPS M1530 laptops. Both have been running up to date installations of Windows 7 with NOD 32 Anti Virus for months now with no problems. Last week however both started freezing with "Not responding" issues every few minutes when browsing the web. It doesn't matter which browser, the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and IE8 all do the same. After a few minutes the browser "wakes up again" but freezes again very soon. I suspect it's an OS update issue, a driver/OS conflict or something. Anybody got a solution for this?

• How to change system time or force a time sync

  My laptop is probably running out of CMOS battery, I know I have to fix it soon, but until then, this very annoying issue keeps me from using it. Scenario: My system clock is reset to 15/12/08 11:00 AM every time I turn on my computer. This has all sorts of side-effects, one of the more annoying being that I can't log into my gmail. At first I just waited for a time sync to happen, as I have that activated and all. It never happened. I googled and didn't find any way of enforcing a time sync, which I found very strange. Is there really none? Setting the time and date by hand is also a problem. For my 12.10 installation, the time & date settings are bugged. I remember it being for my last, older installation as well, though. Of course the easiest way should be to just manually edit the date and time fields by entering a new date. This is possible in theory, but the changes are reverted as soon as the text boxes loose focus. The other way to do it is to click the +-buttons for a long, long time. The first time I did that, the changes weren't stored either. I found out that afterwards I have to switch from manual to internet-sync mode and wait ~5 seconds until the in the top left corner of my system the new time is shown, or otherwise it won't have effect. So a nice solution would be one of the following: Setting the time/date by hand, maybe via terminal, so I can just enter the right values. Or, a command that would enforce an immediate time sync, that I can run after booting. I know I have to change the batteries soon, but this is seriously keeping me from working...

• Can't enable Windows XP file sharing

  The "sharing and security" option in the right-click context menu on a folder is no longer there. The File and Print sharing option is "installed" and turned on in the TCP/IP properties, but the ability to share any folders has disappeared, along with all previously shared folders. Where should I check to see what the issue is here? EDIT From comments below: "Server" service is not starting, see comment below for more... Firewall is completely disabled, too. This is XP Pro, Simple File Sharing is turned on. We've discovered that the "Server" Windows service is not starting on bootup for some reason. When attempting manual start, we get "error 2001: specified driver is invalid."

• Is there a design pattern for chained observers?

  Several times, I've found myself in a situation where I want to add functionality to an existing Observer-Observable relationship. For example, let's say I have an Observable class called PriceFeed, instances of which are created by a variety of PriceSources. Observers on this are notified whenever the underlying PriceSource updates the PriceFeed with a new price. Now I want to add a feature that allows a (temporary) override to be set on the PriceFeed. The PriceSource should still update prices on the PriceFeed, but for as long as the override is set, whenever a consumer asks PriceFeed for it's current value, it should get the override. The way I did this was to introduce a new OverrideablePriceFeed that is itself both an Observer and an Observable, and that decorates the actual PriceFeed. It's implementation of .getPrice() is straight from Chain of Responsibility, but how about the handling of Observable events? When an override is set or cleared, it should issue it's own event to Observers, as well as forwarding events from the underlying PriceFeed. I think of this as some kind of a chained observer, and was curious if there's a more definitive description of a similar pattern.

Note: All PHP 5.4 features are available in your projects after setting Project Properties -> Sources -> PHP Version to PHP 5.4 value, or after choosing the same value during a PHP Project creation (in New Project Wizard). Callable type hint Let's start with a new PHP 5.4 type hint - callable. It's now in code completion and you can use it in your function declarations! Binary notation for integers The next feature is about recognizing of a new binary notation for integers, so you can use it without any problem - no syntax error will occur. • Frequent Disconnects with an Intel 3945ABG Wireless Card

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and I really love it so far, but one issue I have encountered is that my WLAN is disconnecting about every 5-10 minutes. Often times the connection is repaired automatically, but sometimes the network manager will repeatedly reject my encryption key (which of course is correct). Occasionally after a disconnect, the wireless network fails to show up at all. The only way I can solve this seems to be by completely restarting Ubuntu or connecting with a USB wireless adapter. I am using WPA/WPA2 encryption, which I've read can cause problems with network-manager, but I experience the exact same issues with WICD. I should probably note that I've not experienced any of these issues using Windows 7 on my other partition. I have a hunch that there may be a better driver out there for my card, but I have no idea how to go about searching for it or installing it. • Unable to access Windows 7 shared folder with Windows 98

  I'm unable to access a Windows 7 (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) shared folder from an old Windows 98 box: I tried with: Turning on file and printer sharing Turning on public folder sharing Turning off password protected sharing Sharing the folder with read permissions to Everyone Lowering the encryption to 40-56 bits. The shared folder works fine using it from Windows XP, and even from Linux with CIFS / Samba, but when I try to use it from Win98 with: NET USE X: \\SERVER\SHARE an user / password dialog pops up. I entered the administrator's user / password from my Windows 7 box, but it doesn't work (incorrect password). The same Win98 machine works fine accessing a Windows XP shared folder, so it looks like a Windows 7 networking issue. Any ideas?

• Why is APC (PHP Accelerator) Only caching apc.php?

  I installed PHP5,APC and XDEBUGGER with the install script found here: Dreamhost PHP+APC Install Instructions/Script All systems seem to be working... except... I added the apc.php to see the caching stats of APC (GUI Interface), and it showed that only apc.php file was being cached despite having installed wordpress and prestashop under the same domain, installing and running those php scripts. I wonder if I did something wrong... but my php5 is running as a cgi/fastcgi. I think I might have read somewhere about there being some issue with this. Not sure. Any help is of coursed appreciated.

• Early Z culling - Ogre

  This question is concerned with how one can enable this "pixel filter" to work within an Ogre based app. Simply put, one can write two passes, the first without writing any colour values to the frame buffer lighting off colour_write off shading flat The second pass is the one that employs heavy pixel shader computations, hence it would be really nice to get rid of those hidden surface patches and not process them pixel-wise. This approach works, except for one thing: objects with alpha, such as billboard trees suffer in a peculiar way - from one side, they seem to capture the sky/background within their alpha region and ignore other trees/houses behind them, while viewed from the other side, they exhibit the desired behavior. To tackle the issue, I thought I could write a custom vertex shader in the first pass and offset the projected Z component of the vertex a little further away from its actual position, so that in the second pass there is a need to recompute correctly the pixels of the objects closest to the camera. This doesn't work at all, all surfaces are processed in the pixel shader and there is no performance gain. So, if anyone has done a similar trick with Ogre and alpha objects, kindly please help.

  I've been told that to be taken seriously as a job applicant, I should drop years of relevant experience off my résumé, remove the year I got my degree, or both. Or not even bother applying, because no one wants to hire programmers older than them.1 Or that I should found a company, not because I want to, or because I have a product I care about, but because that way I can get a job if/when my company is acquired. Or that I should focus more on management jobs (which I've successfully done in the past) because… well, they couldn't really explain this one, except the implication was that over a certain age you're a loser if you're still writing code. But I like writing code. Have you seen this? Is this only a local (Northern California) issue? If you've ever hired programmers:2 Of the résumés you've received, how old was the eldest applicant? What was the age of the oldest person you've interviewed? How old (when hired) was the oldest person you hired? How old is "too old" to employed as a programmer? 1 I'm assuming all applicants have equivalent applicable experience. This isn't about someone with three decades of COBOL applying for a Java guru job. 2 Yes, I know that (at least in the US) you aren't supposed to ask how old an applicant is. In my experience, though, you can get a general idea from a résumé.
