• Windows Server or Linux for final project

  A few weeks ago I came up with an idea to develop a mobile app which will direct students in my university to the nearest printer availiable. The whole thing is part of my final project. The Android based app will need to perform the following tasks: The user's location in the campus is sent to the server. Assume this part works just fine. The server sends an SNMP request to the printers in the user's vicinity. I'll probably use PHP or Python for that part. The data requested by SNMP is processed and sent back to the client My question concerns the server. The university's IT manager offered me a designated server for development, which sounds great. Now I need to choose which OS I want installed on the server - Windows server or Linux (don't know which versions). I don't have any server programming/operating experince, but generally speaking I feel more comfortable in Windows enviroment (just because that has always been my OS). I don't have much time for learning a new OS, but when does it make sense generally to host or develop server side applications on a Windows environment versus a Linux environment?

• AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks. • Can an Employer turn you down if you have said the fact about current work culture being bad [closed]

  I had recently an interview where I scored good in 1st two round of technical interview . Then in the 3rd round was the managerial round where the guy started about my experience and whether I have vaptured any requirement and handled and trained any teams. This went pretty well for around 50 mins . Then there was the awkward question , Interviewer: why amI looking for a change? Me: coz I want to explore my carrier options? Interviewer: But your current company is big enough and you can explore options over there? (This was supposedly the trap) Me: Apart from that I am missing the flexibilty of working with Us and Europe based company as my current company is not that flexible. Interviewer: What exactly you don't find flexible. Me: The login time . Even if you get late by 1sec you might have to explin. Though this is not a big problem , still I will prefer flexibilty as we are working really hard. Interviewer: Allright ( Then couple of more questions) , Hope to C U Ya , that's pretty much it . Now I called up HR and they say , they are yet to get the feedback from Interviewer. Did I screw it? I mean does some one really have to pretend always by saying positive things about company and manager though not saying negative things?

• Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

Let's start with License Management: Have there been any changes to your infrastructure since you purchased the database licenses? Have you upgraded the servers on which the Oracle database is running? Have the number of users or employees increased since the last license purchase? Yes to any of these questions will lead to investigating correct licensing. The goal is to provide a "soft" license review. Oracle generally does not require any license keys to install our software, so we need to help our customers with compliance. Correct licensing is essential to managing costs, and can provide a great way to efficiently manage IT spend. You might want to contact your local Oracle Channel Manager or VAD for licensing assistance. Or, review the Software Investment Guide. Naturally, these questions can lead to upsell opportunities. If your customer has invested in Oracle technology to manage their data, that data is essential to running their business. We'll take a look at those upsell questions in a later blog post.

• Contructor parameters for dependent classes with Unity Framework

  I just started using the Unity Application Block to try to decouple my classes and make it easier for unit testing. I ran into a problem though that I'm not sure how to get around. Looked through the documentation and did some Googling but I'm coming up dry. Here's the situation: I have a facade-type class which is a chat bot. It is a singleton class which handles all sort of secondary classes and provides a central place to launch and configure the bot. I also have a class called AccessManager which, well, manages access to bot commands and resources. Boiled down to the essence, I have the classes set up like so. public class Bot { public string Owner { get; private set; } public string WorkingDirectory { get; private set; } private IAccessManager AccessManager; private Bot() { // do some setup // LoadConfig sets the Owner & WorkingDirectory variables LoadConfig(); // init the access mmanager AccessManager = new MyAccessManager(this); } public static Bot Instance() { // singleton code } ... } And the AccessManager class: public class MyAccessManager : IAccessManager { private Bot botReference; public MyAccesManager(Bot botReference) { this.botReference = botReference; SetOwnerAccess(botReference.Owner); } private void LoadConfig() { string configPath = Path.Combine( botReference.WorkingDirectory, "access.config"); // do stuff to read from config file } ... } I would like to change this design to use the Unity Application Block. I'd like to use Unity to generate the Bot singleton and to load the AccessManager interface in some sort of bootstrapping method that runs before anything else does. public static void BootStrapSystem() { IUnityContainer container = new UnityContainer(); // create new bot instance Bot newBot = Bot.Instance(); // register bot instance container.RegisterInstance<Bot>(newBot); // register access manager container.RegisterType<IAccessManager,MyAccessManager>(newBot); } And when I want to get a reference to the Access Manager inside the Bot constructor I can just do: IAcessManager accessManager = container.Resolve<IAccessManager>(); And elsewhere in the system to get a reference to the Bot singleton: // do this Bot botInstance = container.Resolve<Bot>(); // instead of this Bot botInstance = Bot.Instance(); The problem is the method BootStrapSystem() is going to blow up. When I create a bot instance it's going to try to resolve IAccessManager but won't be able to because I haven't registered the types yet (that's the next line). But I can't move the registration in front of the Bot creation because as part of the registration I need to pass the Bot as a parameter! Circular dependencies!! Gah!!! This indicates to me I have a flaw in the way I have this structured. But how do I fix it? Help!!

• Preloading Winforms using a Stack and Hidden Form

  I am currently working on a project where we have a couple very control heavy user controls that are being used inside a MDI Controller. This is a Line of Business app and it is very data driven. The problem that we were facing was the aforementioned controls would load very very slowly, we dipped our toes into the waters of multi-threading for the control loading but that was not a solution for a plethora of reasons. Our solution to increasing the performance of the controls ended up being to 'pre-load' the forms onto a hidden window, create a stack of the existing forms, and pop off of the stack as the user requested a form. Now the current issue that I'm seeing that will arise as we push this 'fix' out to our testers, and the ultimately our users is this: Currently the 'hidden' window that contains the preloaded forms is visible in task manager, and can be shut down thus causing all of the controls to be lost. Then you have to create them on the fly losing the performance increase. Secondly, when the user uses up the stack we lose the performance increase (current solution to this is discussed below). For the first problem, is there a way to hide this window from task manager, perhaps by creating a parent form that encapsulates both the main form for the program and the hidden form? Our current solution to the second problem is to have an inactivity timer that when it fires checks the stacks for the forms, and loads a new form onto the stack if it isn't full. However this still has the potential of causing a hang in the UI while it creates the forms. A possible solutions for this would be to put 'used' forms back onto the stack, but I feel like there may be a better way. EDIT: For control design clarification From the comments I have realized there is a lack of clarity on what exactly the control is doing. Here is a detailed explanation of one of the controls. I have defined for this control loading time as the time it takes from when a user performs an action that would open a control, until the time a control is accessible to be edited. The control is for entering Prescriptions for a patient in the system, it has about 5 tabbed groups with a total of about 180 controls. The user selects to open a new Prescription control from inside the main program, this control is loaded into the MDI Child area of the Main Form (which is a DevExpress Ribbon Control). From the time the user clicks New (or loads an existing record) until the control is visible. The list of actions that happens in the program is this: The stack is checked for the existence of a control. If the control exists it is popped off of the stack. The control is rendered on screen. This is what takes 2 seconds The control then is populated with a blank object, or with existing data. The control is ready to use. The average percentage of loading time, across about 10 different machines, with different hardware the control rendering takes about 85 - 95 percent of the control loading time. Without using the stack the control takes about 2 seconds to load, with the stack it takes about .8 seconds, this second time is acceptable. I have looked at Henry's link and I had previously already implemented the applicable suggestions. Again I re-iterate my question as What is the best method to move controls to and from the stack with as little UI interruption as possible?

  I'm having issues with getting DBI's IBM DB2 driver to work with mod_perl. DBI connect('SAMPLE','username',...) failed: [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified at /data/www/perl/test.pl line 15 First of all, why is it using ODBC? The native DB2 driver is installed (hence it works as CGI). Running Apache 2.2.3, mod_perl 2.0.4 under RHEL5. This guy had the same problem as me: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg22909.html But I have no idea how he fixed it. What does mod_php4 have to do with mod_perl? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm having no luck with google. Update: As james2vegas pointed out, the problem has something to do with PHP: I disable PHP all together I get the a different error: Total Environment allocation failure! Did you set up your DB2 client environment? I believe this error is to do with environment variables not being set up correctly, namely DB2INSTANCE. However, I'm not able to turn off PHP to resolve this problem (I need it for some legacy applications). So I now have 2 questions: How can I fix the original issue without disabling PHP all together? How can I fix the environment issue? I've set DB2INSTANCE, DB2_PATH and SQLLIB variables correctly using SetEnv and PerlSetEnv in httpd.conf, but with no luck. Note: I've edited the code to determine if the problem was to do with Global Variable Persistence.

So I figured i would run the regedit export command and then parse the file with php for the keys I need. So after running the dos batch command >regedit /E "output.txt" "HKLM\System....\Company1" The output textfile seems to be in some kind of UNICODE format which isn't regex friendly. I'm using php to parse the file and pull the keys.   What I am trying to do is inject through XML almost the same way that is done through A @PersistenceContext annotation. I am in need of this because of the fact I have different entity managers I need to inject into the same DAO. The databases mirror one another and I would rather have 1 base class and for instances of that base class then create multiple classes just so I can use the @PersistenceContext annotation. Here is my example.   I have got an in memory data structure that is read by multiple threads and written by only one thread. Currently I am using a critical section to make this access threadsafe. Unfortunately this has the effect of blocking readers even though only another reader is accessing it. There are two options to remedy this: use TMultiReadExclusiveWriteSynchronizer do away with any blocking by using a lock free approach For 2. If you see any other problem with the above code, please tell me about it. This is to be run on computers with multiple cores and the above methods are to be called very frequently. In case this matters: I am using Delphi 2007 with the builtin memory manager. I am aware that the memory manager probably enforces some lock anyway when creating a new class but I want to ignore that for the moment. Edit: It may not have been clear from the above: For the full lifetime of the TDataManager object there is only one thread that writes to the data, not several that might compete for write access. So this is a special case of MREW.

• No improvement in speed when using Ehcache with Hibernate

  I'm getting no improvement in speed when using Ehcache with Hibernate Here are the results I get when i run the test below. The test is reading 80 Stop objects and then the same 80 Stop objects again using the cache. On the second read it is hitting the cache, but there is no improvement in speed. Any idea's on what I'm doing wrong?   I'm working on a texture management and animation solution for a small side project of mine. Although the project uses Allegro for rendering and input, my question mostly revolves around C and memory management. I wanted to post it here to get thoughts and insight into the approach, as I'm terrible when it comes to pointers. Essentially what I'm trying to do is load all of my texture resources into a central manager (textureManager) - which is essentially an array of structs containing ALLEGRO_BITMAP objects. The textures stored within the textureManager are mostly full sprite sheets. From there, I have an anim(ation) struct, which contains animation-specific information (along with a pointer to the corresponding texture within the textureManager). To give you an idea, here's how I setup and play the players 'walk' animation: createAnimation(&player.animations[0], "media/characters/player/walk.png", player.w, player.h); playAnimation(&player.animations[0], 10); Rendering the animations current frame is just a case of blitting a specific region of the sprite sheet stored in textureManager. For reference, here's the code for anim.h and anim.c. I'm sure what I'm doing here is probably a terrible approach for a number of reasons. I'd like to hear about them! Am I opening myself to any pitfalls?
