Static Code Analysis feature of Visual Studio performs static code analysis on code to help developers identify potential design, globalization, interoperability, performance, security, and a lot of other categories of potential problems according to Microsoft's rules that mainly targets best practices in writing code, and there is a large set of those rules included with Visual Studio grouped into different categorized targeting specific coding issues like security, design, Interoperability, globalizations and others. Static here means analyzing the source code without executing it and this type of analysis can be performed through automated tools (like Visual Studio 2013 Code Analysis Tool) or manually through Code Review which already supported in Visual Studio 2012 and 2013 (check Using Code Review to Improve Quality video on Channel9) There is also Dynamic analysis which performed on executing programs using software testing techniques such as Code Coverage for example. Code Analysis can be enabled in the Build Definition file by selecting the correct value for the build process parameter "Perform Code Analysis" Once configure, Kick-off your build definition to queue a new build, Code Analysis will run as part of build workflow and you will be able to see code analysis warning as part of build report Understand the Code Analysis results & learn how to fix them Now after you went through Code Analysis configurations and the different ways of running it, we will go through the Code Analysis result how to understand them and how to resolve them. Code Analysis window in Visual Studio will show all the analysis results based on the rule sets you configured in the project file properties, let's dig deep into what each result item contains: 1 Check ID The unique identifier for the rule. CheckId and Category are used for in-source suppression of a warning.       2 Title The title of warning message       3 Description A description of the problem or suggested fix 4 File Name File name and the line of code number which violate the code analysis rule set 5 Category The code analysis category for this error 6 Warning /Error Depend on how you configure it in the rule set the default is Warning level 7 Action Copy: copy the warning information to the clipboard Create Work Item: If you're connected to Team Foundation Server you can create a work item most probably you may create a Task or Bug and assign it for a developer to fix certain code analysis warning Suppress Message: There are times when you might decide not to fix a code analysis warning. You might decide that resolving the warning requires too much recoding in relation to the probability that the issue will arise in any real-world implementation of your code. Or you might believe that the analysis that is used in the warning is inappropriate for the particular context. You can suppress individual warnings so that they no longer appear in the Code Analysis window. Two options available: In Source inserts a SuppressMessage attribute in the source file above the method that generated the warning. This makes the suppression more discoverable. In Suppression File adds a SuppressMessage attribute to the GlobalSuppressions.cs file of the project. This can make the management of suppressions easier. Note that the SuppressMessage attribute added to GlobalSuppression.cs also targets the method that generated the warning. It does not suppress the warning globally.       Visual Studio makes it very easy to fix Code analysis warning, all you have to do is clicking on the Check Id hyperlink if you are not aware how to fix the warring and you'll be directed to MSDN online or local copy based on the configuration you did while installing Visual Studio and you will find all the information about the warring including how to fix it. Create a Custom Code Analysis Rule Set The Microsoft standard rule sets provide groups of rules that are organized by function and depth. For example, the Microsoft Basic Design Guidelines Rules and the Microsoft Extended Design Guidelines Rules contain rules that focus on usability and maintainability issues, with added emphasis on naming rules in the Extended rule set, you can create and modify a custom rule set to meet specific project needs associated with code analysis. To create a custom rule set, you open one or more standard rule sets in the rule set editor. Create and modify a custom rule set required Visual Studio Premium or Ultimate. • Question about API and Web application code sharing

  This is a design question. I have a multi part application with several user types. There is a user client for the patient that interacts with a web service. There is an API evolving behind the web service that will be exposed to institutional "users" and an interface for clinicians, researchers and admin types. The patient UI is Flex. The clinician/admin portion of the application is RoR. The API is RoR/rack based. The web service component is Java WS. All components access the same data source. These components are deployed as separate components to their own subdomains. This decision was made to allow for scaling the components individually as needed. Initially, the decision was made to split the code for the RoR Web application from the RoR API. This decision was made in the interests of security and keeping the components focused on specific tasks. Over the course of time, there is necessarily going to be overlap and I am second guessing my decision to keep the code totally separate. I am noticing code being lifted from the admin side being lifted, modified and used in the API. This being the case, I have been considering merging the Ruby based repositories. I am interested in ideas and insight on this situation along with the reasoning behind your thoughts. Thanks.

• Eclipse Execute from Home - Eclipse.org Version

  Due to a lot of minor errors with the eclipse from the repository( cannot install mylyn or pydev due to unmet dependencies) I manually downloaded from eclipse.org. I have not had this problem before but when I go to ~/eclipse (where I extracted the zip) and try to run eclipse it will not run. From the command line I just get eclipse not installed use sudo apt-get to install it. • How to get ip-address out of SPAMHAUS blacklist?

  I frequently read that it is possible to remove individual ip-addresses from SPAMHAUS blacklisting. OK. Here is 91.205.43.252 (91.205.43.251 - 91.205.43.253) used by back3.stopspamers.com (back2.stopspamers.com, back1.stopspamers.com) in geo-cluster on dedicated servers in Switzerland. The queries: http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=91.205.43.251 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=91.205.43.252 http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=91.205.43.253 tell that: 91.205.43.251 - 91.205.43.253 are all listed in the SBL80808 blacklist And SBL80808 blacklist tells: "Ref: SBL80808 91.205.40.0/22 is listed on the Spamhaus Block List (SBL) 01-Apr-2010 05:52 GMT | SR04 Spamming and now seems this place is involved in other fraud" 91.205.43.251-91.205.43.253 are not listed amongst criminal ip-addresses individually but there is no way to remove it individually from black listing. How to remove this individual (91.205.43.251-91.205.43.253) addresses from SPAMHAUS blacklist? And why the heck SPAMHAUS is blacklisting spam-stopping service? This is only one example of a bunch. My related posts: Blacklist IP database Update: From the answer provided I realized that my question was not even understood. This ip-addresses 91.205.43.251 - 91.205.43.253 are not blacklisted individually, they are blacklisted through its supernet 91.205.40.0/22. Also note that dedicated server, ISP and customer are in much different distant countries. Update2: http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/sbl.lasso?query=SBL80808#removal tells: "To have record SBL80808 (91.205.40.0/22) removed from the SBL, the Abuse/Security representative of RIPE (or the Internet Service Provider responsible for supplying connectivity to 91.205.40.0/22) needs to contact the SBL Team" There are dozens of "abusers" in that blacklist SBL80808. The company using that dedicated server is not an ISP or RIPE representative to treat these issues. Even if to treat it, it is just a matter of pressing "Report spam" on internet to be again blacklisted, this is fruitless approach. These techniques are broadly used by criminals and spammers, See also this my post on blacklisting. This is just one specific example but there are many-many more.

• Downloading a file over HTTP the SSIS way

  This post shows you how to download files from a web site whilst really making the most of the SSIS objects that are available. There is no task to do this, so we have to use the Script Task and some simple VB.NET or C# (if you have SQL Server 2008) code. Very often I see suggestions about how to use the .NET class System.Net.WebClient and of course this works, you can code pretty much anything you like in .NET. Here I’d just like to raise the profile of an alternative. This approach uses the HTTP Connection Manager, one of the stock connection managers, so you can use configurations and property expressions in the same way you would for all other connections. Settings like the security details that you would want to make configurable already are, but if you take the .NET route you have to write quite a lot of code to manage those values via package variables. Using the connection manager we get all of that flexibility for free. The screenshot below illustrate some of the options we have. Using the HttpClientConnection class makes for much simpler code as well. I have demonstrated two methods, DownloadFile which just downloads a file to disk, and DownloadData which downloads the file and retains it in memory. In each case we show a message box to note the completion of the download.   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address. • Windows Azure Root CAs and SSL Client Certificates

  I ran into some problems while trying to make SSL client certificates work for StarterSTS 1.5. In theory you have to do two things (via startup tasks): Unlock the SSL section in IIS Install all the root certificates for the client certs you want to accept I did that. But it still does not work. While inspecting the event log, I stumbled over an schannel error message that I’ve never seen before: “When asking for client authentication, this server sends a list of trusted certificate authorities to the client. The client uses this list to choose a client certificate that is trusted by the server. Currently, this server trusts so many certificate authorities that the list has grown too long. This list has thus been truncated. The administrator of this machine should review the certificate authorities trusted for client authentication and remove those that do not really need to be trusted.” WTF? And indeed standard Azure (web role) VMs trust 275 root CAs (see attached list). Including kinda obscure ones. I don’t really know why MS made this design decision. It seems just wrong (including breaking the SSL client cert functionality). Deleting like 60% of them made SSL client certs from my CA work. • Token based Authentication for WCF HTTP/REST Services: Authorization

  In the previous post I showed how token based authentication can be implemented for WCF HTTP based services. Authentication is the process of finding out who the user is – this includes anonymous users. Then it is up to the service to decide under which circumstances the client has access to the service as a whole or individual operations. This is called authorization. By default – my framework does not allow anonymous users and will deny access right in the service authorization manager. You can however turn anonymous access on – that means technically, that instead of denying access, an anonymous principal is placed on Thread.CurrentPrincipal. You can flip that switch in the configuration class that you can pass into the service host/factory. var configuration = new WebTokenWebServiceHostConfiguration {     AllowAnonymousAccess = true }; But this is not enough, in addition you also need to decorate the individual operations to allow anonymous access as well, e.g.: [AllowAnonymousAccess] public string GetInfo() {     ... } Inside these operations you might have an authenticated or an anonymous principal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal, and it is up to your code to decide what to do. Side note: Being a security guy, I like this opt-in approach to anonymous access much better that all those opt-out approaches out there (like the Authorize attribute – or this.). Claims-based Authorization Since there is a ClaimsPrincipal available, you can use the standard WIF claims authorization manager infrastructure – either declaratively via ClaimsPrincipalPermission or programmatically (see also here). [ClaimsPrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,     Resource = "Claims",     Operation = "View")] public ViewClaims GetClientIdentity() {     return new ServiceLogic().GetClaims(); }   In addition you can also turn off per-request authorization (see here for background) via the config and just use the “domain specific” instrumentation. • Downloading a file over HTTP the SSIS way

  This post shows you how to download files from a web site whilst really making the most of the SSIS objects that are available. There is no task to do this, so we have to use the Script Task and some simple VB.NET or C# (if you have SQL Server 2008) code. Very often I see suggestions about how to use the .NET class System.Net.WebClient and of course this works, you can code pretty much anything you like in .NET. Here I’d just like to raise the profile of an alternative. This approach uses the HTTP Connection Manager, one of the stock connection managers, so you can use configurations and property expressions in the same way you would for all other connections. Settings like the security details that you would want to make configurable already are, but if you take the .NET route you have to write quite a lot of code to manage those values via package variables. Using the connection manager we get all of that flexibility for free. The screenshot below illustrate some of the options we have. Using the HttpClientConnection class makes for much simpler code as well. I have demonstrated two methods, DownloadFile which just downloads a file to disk, and DownloadData which downloads the file and retains it in memory. In each case we show a message box to note the completion of the download. • Advantages to Server Scripting languages over Client Side Scripting languages

  There are numerous advantages to server scripting languages over client side scripting languages in regards to creating web sites that are more compelling compared to a standard static site. Server side scripts are executed on a web server during the compilation of data to return to a client. These scripts allow developers to modify the content that is being sent to the user prior to the return of the data to the user as well as store information about the user. In addition, server side scripts allow for a controllable environment in which they can be executed. This cannot be said for client side languages because the developer cannot control the users’ environment compared to a web server. Some users may turn off client scripts, some may be only allow limited access on the system and others may be able to gain full control of the environment.  I have been developing web applications for over 9+ years, and I have used server side languages for most of the applications I have built.  Here is a list of common things I have developed with server side scripts. List of Common Generic Functionality: Send Email FTP Files Security/ Access Control Encryption URL rewriting Data Access Data Creation I/O Access The one important feature server side languages will help me with on my website is Data Access because my component will be backed with a SQL server database. I believe that form validation is one instance where I might see server side and client side scripts used interchangeably because it does not matter how or where the data is validated as long as the data that gets inserted is valid.
