• How to read Scala code with lots of implicits?

Container(0) ) } I understand what it does on high level. But I wanted to trace what exactly happens during the call to d.traverse at the end. Clearly, List doesn't have traverse, so it must be implicitly converted to another type that does. Even though I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find out, I wasn't very successful. First I found that there is a method in scalaz.Traversable traverse[F[_], A, B] (f: (A) => F[B], t: T[A])(implicit arg0: Applicative[F]): F[T[B]] but clearly this is not it (although it's most likely that "my" traverse is implemented using this one). After a lot of searching, I grepped scalaz source codes and I found scalaz.MA's method traverse[F[_], B] (f: (A) => F[B])(implicit a: Applicative[F], t: Traverse[M]): F[M[B]] which seems to be very close. Still I'm missing to what List is converted in my example and if it uses MA.traverse or something else. The question is: What procedure should I follow to find out what exactly is called at d.traverse? Having even such a simple code that is so hard analyze seems to me like a big problem. Am I missing something very simple? How should I proceed when I want to understand such code that uses a lot of imported implicits? Is there some way to ask the compiler what implicits it used? Or is there something like Hoogle for Scala so that I can search for a method just by its name?

• Managing JS and CSS for a static HTML web application

  I'm working on a smallish web application that uses a little bit of static HTML and relies on JavaScript to load the application data as JSON and dynamically create the web page elements from that. First question: Is this a fundamentally bad idea? I'm unclear on how many web sites and web applications completely dispense with server-side generation of HTML. (There are obvious disadvantages of JS-only web apps in the areas of graceful degradation / progressive enhancement and being search engine friendly, but I don't believe that these are an issue for this particular app.) Second question: What's the best way to manage the static HTML, JS, and CSS? For my "development build," I'd like non-minified third-party code, multiple JS and CSS files for easier organization, etc. For the "release build," everything should be minified, concatenated together, etc. If I was doing server-side generation of HTML, it'd be easy to have my web framework generate different development versus release HTML that includes multiple verbose versus concatenated minified code. But given that I'm only doing any static HTML, what's the best way to manage this? (I realize I could hack something together with ERB or Perl, but I'm wondering if there are any standard solutions.) • Google Rolls Out a New and Compact Navigation Bar

  Earlier this spring Google introduced the black navigation bar; now they’ve updated the bar to take up less space and be more useful. Although the black bar is useful in-so-far as it gives you quick access to Google services (useful, of course, only if you use those services) the new navigation bar–seen in the video above–includes an improved layout. Rather than use the bar space to spread out links which the user may or may not use the service links are now tucked into a mouse-over menu accessed by hovering on the Google logo. The majority of the space previously just taken up by links and the black bar itself is now a a search box. • Need to sanity-check my .htaccess, especially Limit GET POST line for Google repellent

  I need a sanity check on this .htaccess (from a WordPress site) I inherited from a 5 month+ old site. What's the symptom? Google + Bing crawl, but don't index any of the pages. Let me be clear: I'm not mad about "not ranking high." I think something is (accidentally) rejecting search engine indexing. I am not an expert on .htaccess, but one part especially looked funny, the Limit GET POST line. Is it not weird to have both Allow and Deny all, with no parameters? • Trying to install Canon iP7250 printer

  I'm trying to install my Canon iP7250 printer on a fresh install of 13:10 64bit. Last time I installed it successfully via http://handytutorial.com/install-canon-printer-driver-for-ubuntu-13-04-12-10-12-04 which entailed adding a repository via the terminal and then updating it. I then opened Synaptic and searched for my printer model and Synaptic then installed everything. This time round I added the repositories but the update failed with the following error: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/michael-gru...amd64/Packages 404 Not Found Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/michael-gru...-i386/Packages 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. An internet search failed to find another way of installing this printer so I'm stuck. My laptop also runs 64 bit 13:10 and the printer works, as I installed it months ago. Is there any way I can take something off that to use on this new machine? Thank you all in advance P.S. I have just found and downloaded the official Canon driver from the Canon website and extracted it, but I don't know how to install it.

• Apache Not Accepting a Path in My Home Folder

  I have trying to set up an Apache site to use a folder in my home folder without any success. I exactly followed the steps in this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ApacheMySQLPHP yet I did not succeed; I keep getting error 403, which says that the server doesn't have permission to access the requested page. I searched forums and many suggested changing the permission of the folder. I went straight away and set the permission to 777, but that didn't solve the problem. I made another search and somebody gave me a clue, which is that it could be because my home folder is encrypted. I believe this could be the problem, but: What is the relation between encryption and Apache? I suppose Apache server is requesting the file from the system, rather than trying to access the file bytes! Is there anyway to solve this problem? I don't want to move the folder to /var/www because I am using this Apache for testing, so I want whatever change I make to be immediately reflected, rather than having to copy files which is error prone.

• Google Chrome freezing when I open Bookmark Manager

  I have an issue with Google Chrome freezing whenever I open the Bookmark Manager. Only that particular tab freezes, and I can still use the other tabs. No bookmarks appear, and I cannot type in the 'Search bookmarks' field. This seems to be related with my logged in profile. If I change profile, it allows me to login. I've also tried to login with my profile on different computers using Chrome, and it also freezes. However, I can still add bookmarks from the bookmarks tab. I just cannot use the Bookmark Manager. Any ideas what I can do? Is it possible to somehow export my bookmarks, reset the profile bookmarks (without losing other information like extensions etc), and re-import them?

• Practical considerations for HTML / CSS naming conventions (syntax)

  Question: what are the practical considerations for the syntax in class and id values? Note that I'm not asking about the semantics, i.e. the actual words that are being used, as for example described in this blogpost. There are a lot of resources on that side of naming conventions already, in fact obscuring my search for practical information on the various syntactical bits: casing, use of interpunction (specifically the - dash), specific characters to use or avoid, etc. To sum up the reasons I'm asking this question: The naming restrictions on id and class don't naturally lead to any conventions The abundance of resources on the semantic side of naming conventions obscure searches on the syntactic considerations I couldn't find any authorative source on this There wasn't any question on SE Programmers yet on this topic :) Some of the conventions I've considered using: UpperCamelCase, mainly as a cross-over habit from server side coding lowerCamelCase, for consistency with JavaScript naming conventions css-style-classes, which is consistent with naming of css properties (but can be annoying when Ctrl+Shift+ArrowKey selection of text) with_under_scores, which I personally haven't seen used much alllowercase, simple to remember but can be hard to read for longer names UPPERCASEFTW, as a great way to annoy your fellow programmers (perhaps combined with option 4 for readability) And probably I've left out some important options or combinations as well. So: what considerations are there for naming conventions, and to which convention do they lead?

  Hello Apologies if this is already answered, its a tricky one to search for! We are using split DNS for a domain used internally. For the outside nameservers, theres a simple zone with: @ IN A ip.ad.dr.ess www IN A ip.ad.re.ss This works fine externally. Internally its a windows server 2003 DNS server, so the www a record works fine, but I cant figure out how to add that primary record (using at symbol @ in bind). Can anyone help with how to get the same results from windows dns? I just want to be able to add a record for domain.com without being forced to use something.domain.com Thanks, Edit: This domain is not the "main" AD domain, and not used for logins etc.

• how can I effect DNS Caching on PHP/Memcache application

  In a very high loaded Ubuntu/PHP web server I found that the PHP line: $memcache-connect("int-aws_ec2.memcached.myapp.net",11211); sometimes takes ~5 secs. Replacing the url with the ip address decreases the server load from ~20 to 0 My question is - where are the settings that effect the DNS caching for this? Is it in the server level or the memcache library ? How can I change it ? Additional info: Ubuntu 10.04 lucid PHP: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Amazon EC2 Even more info per Celada's comment: The DNS handling for the memcache server is done by scalr (the platform I use to manage the cloud resources). They have a client located on the instances and their own DNS servers. /etc/nsswitch.conf - hosts: files dns /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 172.16.0.23 domain ec2.internal search ec2.internal The domain is not in hosts.conf To check if I run nscd I used /etc/init.d/nscd stop and received 'no such file' so i guess I dont run nscd.   Currently I am creating a website which has a common topic for an article, but it's going to be different content for each country, and also, each of that content will be provided in several languages. And this mechanism exists in most of the parts in the website. For example, I have an article about tax. This article has to be different for each country, for example china. And tax content for china should be written in china AND english language (for non china-speaker). What is the best URL pattern to handle this? What I've been thinking is, using a sub folder (/country-code/language-code/) such as: www.example.com/cn/cn/tax www.example.com/cn/en/tax Or using top level domain such as: www.example.cn/cn/tax www.example.cn/en/tax Or subdomain such as cn.example.com/cn/tax cn.example.com/en/tax I think I will not prefer the last option since I might need to use subdomain for other purpose. Which left only subfolder and TLDN. I've read some articles saying that TLDN is good for localized content (language-specific content), but in my case, my TLDN will also has english contents (for non local speaker) which is specific only to that particular country (also the purpose of this is to let people from other country easily search it through google). What is the best pattern to pick and why?.

• Why my pendrive is showing used space when it is actually empty?

  I recently got some virus in my pendrive. I removed them using Microsoft security Essential and cleared all data. But it is showing that 47.1MB of space is being used. Is it due to the virus affect? There is no hidden files on the pendrive and I have also set Show hidden files in the Folder and search option. Permission is also granted to everyone. I also use disk management to check any issue but nothing found. I think formatting will solve the the problem but in that case I will not be able to see the data. Is there any command to see the files in cmd or any other way?

• Teaching myself, as a physicist, to become a better programmer

  I've always liked physics, and I've always liked coding, so when I got the offer for a PhD position doing numerical physics (details are not relevant, it's mostly parallel programming for a cluster) at a university, it was a no-brainer for me. However, as most physicists, I'm self taught. I don't have broad background knowledge about how to code in an object oriented way, or the name of that specific algorithm that optimizes the search in some kD tree. Since all my work so far has been more concerned about the physics and the scientific results, I undoubtedly have some bad habits - more so because my coding is my own, and not really teamwork. I have mostly used C since it is very straightforward and "what you write is what you get" - no need for fancy abstractions. However, I have recently switched to C++ since I'd like to learn more about the power that comes with abstraction, and it's pretty C-like (syntax-wise at least). How do I teach myself to code in a good, abstract way like a graduate in computer science? I know my code is efficient, but I want it to be elegant as well, and readable. Keep in mind that I don't have time to read several 1000-page tomes about abstract programming. I need to spend time on actual, physics related research (my supervisor would laugh at me if he knew I spent time thinking about how to program elegantly). How do I assess if my work is also good from a programmer's perspective?

• Announcement: Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch update now available

  The Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS).  If you search for the Oracle Database Appliance 2.4.0.0.0 Kit under Patches it will display the newly uploaded bundles. The patch highlights include: Normal redundancy (double-mirroring) option providing 6TB of usable storage Enhanced Diagnostics - Trace File Analyzer and ODACHK Also, if you review the README, you may see content that says:        "The grid infrastructure and database patching, both are rolling upgradable. During our patching, we patch the node 1 first and when completed, we patch the node 2." I would like to clarify that the 'infrastructure' updates (OS, Firmware, ILOM, etc) will require a  short downtime of the ODA while it is applied.  When you update the grid infrastructure (--gi), the appliance manager verifies that the infrastructure was updated so you cannot just patch the GI without first updating the infrastructure. • Xen 4.0.1 on Ubuntu 10.10 not booting

  I'm trying to get Xen 4.0.1 run as dom0 on a fresh/clean install of 10.10 desktop (x64). • Advanced file compression software for Mac OSX

  Back when I used Windows, I always used WinRAR for file compression and decompression. It had a fair amount of options like 'just storage' vs 'hard compression', password protection and archive type. Now that I use Mac OSX, the only compression possibility I have is the default Finder's Compress to Zip. I downloaded the most popular decompression software "Unarchiver". But this app can't compress other archive types either. I went for a search but there seem to be hardly any good advanced compression tools that work nice in OSX and have the options WinRAR has. (WinRAR works in OSX but command line only, I'm looking for something with a GUI.) Any ideas? I strongly prefer freeware. I found Archiver and StiffIt, but they are both commercial.

• File downloaded from IIS6/Win2003 server to a Mac (and not PCs) is incredibly slow

  We have a test zip file on our customers server that we host for him that when downloading to a Mac is incredibly slow. On a Mac - trying the download via Safari 5.0.3 and Chrome 8.0.552.231 results in a quick burst of normal download speed then plummets to almost no speed at all after 1 or 2 meg (between 1 and 5 Kb/s - yes, KiloBITS per second! According to the network monitor). Downloading via Windows was fine and speedy. Tested via; IE7 7.0.5730.13 and Chrome Portable 8.0.552.224 On Windows XP Pro, and; IE8 8.0.7600.16385 in a Windows 7 virtual machine running via VirtualBox 4.0.0 r69151 on the same Mac mention above Google hasn't helped us out on this occasion, possibly because the search terms I'm having to use are quite generic. Has anybody ever experienced this and if so how do we fix it? Thanks in advance

• 5 Ways Microsoft Can Improve the Windows 8 Start Screen

  After having used Windows 8 over the past few months, we’ve found a few ways Microsoft could immediately improve the Start Screen to make it less disorienting and more usable, not only for tablets but desktops and laptops as well. It’s safe to say that the one thing Windows 8 doesn’t lack is criticism. Since the Consumer Preview debuted in February, it has proven to be one of the most polarizing Windows releases ever. But regardless of whether you love or hate it, Windows 8 is where Microsoft’s venerable operating system is headed. Portable computing is here to stay and if the company is to survive, let alone remain relevant, it has to change, adapt, embrace, and extend. Perhaps the single most universally controversial change to Windows is Microsoft’s decision to remove the Start button (or orb, if you’ve moved beyond XP) and with it, what we know to be the Start Menu. In their place we now have a Start hot corner (a workable alternative) and the newly redesigned Metro Start Screen. The Start Screen is, if nothing else, different. Beyond a doubt, there has not been such a radical redesign of Windows’ Start functionality since it went to a two-column design with a nested “All Programs” menu in Windows XP. The Start Screen can be a little jarring because it requires users to not only relearn what they’ve known for nearly two decades but to also rethink the way they interact with Windows. However, the Start Screen maintains its core elements: a Start “menu”, a place for all installed programs (All apps), and a search pane. The Start Screen is attractive, clean, bold, and very imperfect.
