  I was using windows 7 till yesterday. I tried to install ubuntu 14. 04 Lts version yesterday with in windows 7. But it was not succeeded. Then I decided to install ubuntu only. By mistake I installed ubuntu in whole disk. After that to get deleted partitions I installed testdisk. I also used deeper search option. Now I'm getting "file system damaged". It shows The hard disk (320GB /298 GiB) seems to small! (<473 GB /441 GB) Check the Harddisk size: HD Jumpers setings, BIOS detection... The following partitions can't be recovered: Partition start end size in sectrors Linux 19077 177 45 57604 81 13 618930716 Linux 19080 192 57 57607 96 25 618930716 With ubcd also I used testdisk option. Same result comes."cannot open file system. File system seems damaged ". I have all my stuff in hard disk. Please help me to get recover my files in deleted partitions.

• Which algorithms/data structures should I "recognize" and know by name?

  I'd like to consider myself a fairly experienced programmer. I've been programming for over 5 years now. My weak point though is terminology. I'm self-taught, so while I know how to program, I don't know some of the more formal aspects of computer science. So, what are practical algorithms/data structures that I could recognize and know by name? Note, I'm not asking for a book recommendation about implementing algorithms. I don't care about implementing them, I just want to be able to recognize when an algorithm/data structure would be a good solution to a problem. I'm asking more for a list of algorithms/data structures that I should "recognize". For instance, I know the solution to a problem like this: You manage a set of lockers labeled 0-999. People come to you to rent the locker and then come back to return the locker key. How would you build a piece of software to manage knowing which lockers are free and which are in used? The solution, would be a queue or stack. What I'm looking for are things like "in what situation should a B-Tree be used -- What search algorithm should be used here" etc. And maybe a quick introduction of how the more complex(but commonly used) data structures/algorithms work. I tried looking at Wikipedia's list of data structures and algorithms but I think that's a bit overkill. So I'm looking more for what are the essential things I should recognize?

• using sed to print next line after match

  I came across various examples on printing next line after a match, that use awk and sed. I'm using it in my code and it works fine. Now I want to use a variable instead of a hardcoded value for the pattern match. The search pattern string includes forward slashes "/". How do I use a variable that has "/" in it and use it to print the next line after the match? The following doesn't seem to work: var="/somePath/to/my/home" val=`echo -e "$someStr" | sed -n ':$var:{n;p;}'` In this case, val is always blank. I'm using using ":" as the delimiter instead of "/". I'm on a Mac OS X.

  What are the performance affects of compressing Program Files on Windows NTFS? On a fast, multicore machine, the overhead of decompression is minimal. Machines are generally disk bound, and if you can reduce the disk load by compression, you often speed things up. (Microsoft says that the built in compression of Windows Search indexes actually improves speed for this reason.) On the other hand, Windows' virtual memory is complicated. Perhaps if files are compressed, they can't be paged out simply. And there may be other issues. In short: On a fast, multicore machine with a relatively slow disk, what performance affects will compressing Program Files have?

• Configuring Apache for multiple clients

  Last week I had a question here about suexec / suphp but I tried to accomplish too much. I'm going to narrow the scope a bit and try again. I'd like to configure a LAMP server to host multiple clients. I'd like it to seem (from the client's viewpoint) just like any other shared hosting environment. Web sites in their home directory, no need to muck around with file ownerships to get pages served, etc. It would seem that a configuration that involves suexec and suphp is the way to go(?) I'm specifically looking for a current/modern guide on how to accomplish this (I'll be using CentOS if it matters) and I'm afraid I need more than a link to Apache docs. Are there any good How-To's out there? The few I've found have been pretty out of date, but it is quite possible my search was weak.

Then it should search for the declaration of that variable in file before : (semicolon) ex: databasename in file1 may be $databasename = "dbweb" ; ex: mysql_user in file2 may be $mysql_user="root" ; Result: It should display variable declarations of all 6 variables along with filenames file2:$mysql_host = "db1"; file2:$mysql_user = "root"; file1:$DB_USER = 'user';

• Is it better to hard code data or find an algorithm?

  I've been working on a boardgame that has a hex grid as the board (the upper right grid in the image below) Since the board will never change and the spaces on the board will always be linked to the same other spaces around it, should I just hard code every space with the values that I need? Or should I use various algorithms to calculate links and traversals? To be more specific, my board game is a 4 player game where each player has a 5x5x5x5x5x5 hex grid (again, the upper right grid in th eimage above). The object is to get from the bottom of the grid to the top, with various obstacles in the way, and each players being able to attack eachother from the edge of their grid onto other players based on a range multiplier. Since the players grid will never change and the distance of any arbitrary space from the edge of the grid will always be the same, should I just hard code this number into each of the spaces, or should I still use a breadth first search algorithm when players are attacking? The only con I can think of for hard coding everything is that I'm going to code 9+ 2(5+6+7+8) = 61 individual cells. Is there anything else that I'm missing that I should consider using more complex algorithms?

• Snow Leopard - resolving hostnames issue

  This worked in Leopard, although since Snowie came along … I have a Location setup with a DNS server to use [eg 10.0.0.17] , and a search string [eg sub.dom.ain.com] In the terminal: $ nslookup cake Server 10.0.0.17 Address: 10.0.0.17#53 Name: cake.sub.dom.ain.com Address: 10.0.0.38 So works like a charm. Although if I just the hostname cake in any other application within OSX - such as Safari/CoRD, they simply can't resolve the hostname. I have to instead use the FQDN cake.sub.dom.ain.com - why is this so? Why did this work in Leopard and is now broken? Would love a solution. Thanks

• The road to become a programmer [closed]

  I'm looking for a 'career' change, I don't actually have a career at the moment since I haven't been able to find a job since I graduated with a degree in Materials Engineering. One of my loves has always been computers and programming, though I have never studied it seriously. When I was 11 I wrote a very basic graphical 'game' using notepad and HTML, where I drew each possible position of the main character on the different 'maze' level in MSPaint, using pictures of arrows as links to a new page with the character in a new position, and various other buttons would pop up 'search box', 'press button' etc. At the time I thought this was an amazing achievement of my programming skills. I've used a little bit of FORTRAN 90 whilst I was at university, which rekindled my interest in programming. When I was a kid I mainly used C and HTML, but only very basically as my 'game' suggests. I want to learn a new programming language, I'm not entirely sure where I want to go with it, but the number one contender at the moment is android apps. I'm looking at learning Java, but I've read that it's a difficult place to begin with; so I've also looked at learning Visual Basic, which I believe is also object oriented(?) but a little easier to understand? (not that I know what an object is anyway). Any information people could give me regarding which language to learn, and if there are any good online tutorial for that language I'd really appreciate it. Some of the tutorials I've used so far are full or jargon I can't understand. Also, I'm not afraid of maths having got an engineering degree. Thanks in advance for any help/advice. James

• weird resolving of path to command

  I have the terminal editor 'nano' installed in two places on my mac /usr/bin/nano /opt/local/bin/nano The installations are of different versions. the one in /usr does not support my configuration in ~/.nanorc and the one in /opt does. when i open a file with the command 'nano file', errors are displayed, indicating that the one in /usr was used, however, if i run 'which nano'; the one in /opt shows up. Isn't 'which' meant to search the path for the default? And why wouldn't a call to 'nano' resolve to the same path? EDIT: I made a work-around by adding the following line to ~/.profile alias nano='/opt/local/bin/nano'

• creating TAGS for Ruby and emacs

  I ran the following from my top level Ruby on Rails directory find . -name "*.rb" | etags - Then within emacs I visited that tag file. This works reasonably well to find some of the methods and most of the files, however it is having trouble finding some of the extra methods/classes that I use in my helpers directory. e.g. I have a file in my helpers dir called my_foo_helper.rb If I search my tags for that file, it finds it. However, if I try to find a tag for one of the methods within that module it doesn't find it at all. If I use Aptana or something like that it seems to be able to locate those methods. Any thoughts? Thanks!

• Experience with HAVP

  I have employees that have to search sketchy virus-ridden websites as part of their job. They all have XP and Symantec AV installed but they still get hit fairly often. Rather then trying all sorts of desktop level solutions, I was thinking about maybe some sort of Proxy in addition to symantec for when they browse these sites? Anyone have experience with HAVP? Am I going about this the wrong way? If this is the right way, and free alternatives to HAVP?

  I'm working on a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. It was running slowly and hanging, antivirus scans turned up nothing and the same with the Dell diagnostics (DFT hung - but Dell's diagnostics gave the HD a pass) so I imaged the HD and installed XP Pro on it. The laptop is still slow! (It takes a noticeable delay to enter words into the Google search box in IE and the computer hangs every time it enters the XP screensaver.) What are the likely possibilities at this point and how would I go about checking for them?

  here is my scenario i have a website where i redirect my users basing upon the device they were using, lets say a user is visiting from an iPad, i take him directly to the page of iPad wallpapers, the user selects iPad version & i take the user to the gallery of wallpapers where the user can select & download any wallpaper. Every wallpaper is the required resolution, i have my reasons for doing this, now the thing is there are diff. resolution. versions of an image appearing one 5 diff. sections of my website, each having their own view page Now there is only one record in db.table for the image, and basing on the my consistent naming convention of the images, i pick the required image. this means when 5 different pages are generated in 5 categorized sections of the website, due to a shared DB record, the keywords, the titles and every single detail of the 5 pages is same besides the resolution of the image, and the section specific details that the page has and yeah the pages also have different paths like wallpapers.com\ipad-1\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-2\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-3\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-4\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-5\cars\Ferrari-dino.html now this is my scenario, How do Search Engines see it and how do they rank it?   NOTE - Although this question is for a specific version of Ubuntu and a specific Broadcom model, the answer to it is for most Broadcom models and versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10. If you have come here from another question, feel free to read the answer instead. The answer covers many problems with several solutions. I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. How can I get Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless working? Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done.
