• Exchange 2003-Exchange 2010 post migration GAL/OAB problem

  I am very new to Exchange so forgive my newbie-ness. I've exhausted Google trying to find a way to solve my problem so I'm hoping some of you gurus can shed some light on my next steps. Please forgive my bungling around through this. The problem I cannot download/update the Global Address List (GAL) and Offline Address Book (OAB) on my Outlook 2010 clients. I get: Task 'emailaddress' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The operation failed. An object cannot be found.' ---- error. I'm using cached exchange mode, which if I turn off Outlook hangs completely from the moment I start it up. (Note I've replaced my actual email address with 'emailaddress') Background information I migrated mailboxes, public store, etc. from a Small Business Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 box to a Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 based primarily on an experts exchange how to article. The exchange server is up and running as an internet facing exchange server with all of the roles necessary to send and receive mail and in that capacity is working fine. I "thought" I had successfully migrated everything from the SBS03 box, and due to huge amounts of errors in everything from AD to the Exchange install itself I removed the reference to the SBS03 server in adsiedit. I've still got access to the old SBS03 box, but as I said the number of errors in everything is preventing even the uninstall of Exchange (or the starting of the Exchange Information Store service), so I'm quite content to leave that box completely out of the picture while trying to solve my problem. After research I discovered this is most likely because I failed to run the “update-globaladdresslist” (or get / update) command from the Exchange shell before I removed the Exchange 2003 server from adsiedit (and the network). If I run the command now it gives me: WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Offline Address Book - first administrative group" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Schedule+ Free Busy Information – first administrative group" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/ContainernameArchive" is invalid and couldn't be updated. WARNING: The recipient "domainname.com/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/ContainernameContacts" is invalid and couldn't be updated. (Note that I’ve replaced my domain with “domainname.com” and my organization name with “containername”) What I’ve tried I don’t want to use the old OAB, or GAL, I don’t care about either, our GAL and distribution lists needed to be organized anyway, so at this point I really just want to get rid of the old reference to the “first administrative group” and move on. I’ve tried to create a new GAL and tell Exchange 2010 to use that GAL instead of the old GAL, but I'm obviously missing some of the commands or something dumb I need to do to start over with a blank slate/GAL/OAB. I'm very tempted to completely delete the entire "first administrative group" tree from adsiedit and see if that gets rid of the ridiculous reference that no longer exists but I dont want to break something else. Commands run to try to create a new GAL and tell exch10 to use that GAL: New-globaladdresslist –name NAMEOFNEWGAL Set-globaladdresslist GUID –name NAMEOFNEWGAL This did nothing for me except now when I run get-globaladdresslist or with the | FL pipe I see two GALs listed, the “default global address list” and the “NAMEOFNEWGAL” that I created. After a little more research this morning it looks like you can't change/delete/remove the default address list, and the only way to do what I'm trying to do would be to maybe remove the default address list via adsiedit and recreate with a command something like new-GlobalAddressList -Name "Default Global Address List" -IncludedRecipients AllRecipients. This would be acceptable but I've searched and searched and can't find instructions or a breakdown of where exactly the default GAL lives in AD, and if I'd have to remove multiple child references/records. Of interest I'm getting an event ID 9337 in my application log OALGen did not find any recipients in address list \Global Address List. This offline address list will not be generated. -\NAMEOFMYOAB --------- on my Exchange 2010 box, which pretty much to me seems to confirm my suspicion that the empty GAL/OAB is what's causing the Outlook client 0x8004010F error. • Console Hangs when Attempting to Deploy Software Updates

  When in the SCCM 2012 console under Software Updates, I click Deploy on a Software Update Group and the console hangs indefinitely. It just stops; I click away and back and Windows does not recognize that the console has stopped responding. I end up having to kill the console through Task Manager. I have left the console for hours and it never becomes responsive again. I have tried removing and reinstalling the SUP, without success. Server reboots do not help, either. The issue with the console occurs both on my desktop, and directly on the site server itself. Any ideas? I've checked server logs and found nothing that would be indicative of a problem. • Static route works on one computer, not the other

  I have been struggling with this for a couple days now, maybe I just need some people with a fresh perspective to figure out what the issue is. Basically I have a bunch of computers that are being routed through a specific gateway in order to access a web page that is hosted internally on a separate subnet. I set up static routes on all of the computers, and they all work... except one. So essentially what I am trying to do here is route all traffic to the 10.zzz.zzz.0 subnet through the 10.xxx.xxx.147 gateway. Everything else should go through the 10.xxx.xxx.230 gateway. This is the intended behavior, and again it is working everywhere but that one station. I noticed that the Active Route metric costs differ between the two stations, but I am new to the routing table and I am not sure how that is impacting the behavior. I hope I have been able to explain the situation clearly. Any help would be much appreciated. I can provide any additional information if needed!

• Installing .NET Framework 4 Client Profile breaks Windows Update

  I have a Samsung NC-10 netbook with a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (it only had 2GB). If Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is installed on it, Windows Update will always return error code 8024402F ("Windows Update encountered an unknown error"). As soon as I uninstall it, Windows Update works just fine again. Out of the four computers in this house, only this netbook has the problem. My question is: How can I get the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile installed on my netbook and continue to have a functioning Windows Update? ----- More information ----- The hard-drive recently died on my netbook so I replaced it with a nice new SSD and did a fresh installation of Windows 7 Home Premium (SP1) - along with all the updates. At some point I found that, when I ran Windows Update, I was greeted with error code 8024402F ("Windows Update encountered an unknown error"). Looking in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, I saw the following issue: WARNING: ECP: Failed to validate cab file digest downloaded from http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/dflt/2012/02/4913552_4a5c9563d1f58c77f30d0d5c9999e4b8bff3ab21.cab with error 0x80091007 WARNING: ECP: This roundtrip contained some optimized updates which failed. New Update count = 0, Old Count = 3 FATAL: ProcessCoreMetadata did not return any update to be committed WARNING: Sync of Updates: 0x8024402f WARNING: SyncServerUpdatesInternal failed: 0x8024402f When I downloaded the CAB from the URL listed and opened it, it contained a file called 4913552.txt. A search on Google suggested that it's related to Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. Other people had reported problems with it breaking Windows Update, but they were running Windows XP. I tried the steps outlined on the Microsoft site for this error code, but it reported that there was nothing wrong. I also found this superuser question, I tried all the answers listed but none of them made any difference. My router doesn't block ActiveX, changing my internet settings in IE made no difference, assuming it was a corrupted update repository didn't do anything (except wipe my update history), my date and time was correct, switching to Google's DNS didn't work and neither did disabling IPv6. Figuring that this update was corrupted, I repaired it and nothing changed. In desperation I un-installed it and Windows Update started working again! Brilliant! I then downloaded the full version from the Microsoft website, installed it and, thankfully, Windows Update continued to work just fine. A week later I turn on my netbook and Windows Update is broken again with exactly the same error message and log entries as before. Repairing .NET Framework 4 Client Profile did nothing, removing it entirely solved the problem again. Thinking this might be some odd Windows installation issue, I formatted the hard-drive and re-installed Windows. Same problem as before - as soon as .NET Framework 4 Client Profile ended up on the netbook, Windows Update stopped working and reported error 8024402F. As soon as it was un-installed, everything worked just fine again. There are three other machines in this house and all of them have working Windows Update and this Client Profile. Does anyone know why it causes this netbook to break and, more importantly, how I can fix it?

  My friend asked me to look at her Acer Aspire laptop with Vista Home Premium as it is no longer playing DVDs. I found that Windows Media Player would not launch. I found this thread, which contained a number of suggestions, none of which solved the problem. Here is what I tried: Tried running WMP via desktop shortcut, QuickLaunch bar or going to Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. In all cases, wmplayer would launch then terminate immediately (verified through the Processes tab in Task Manager). Tried running wmplayer.exe as Administrator. The UAC dialog would come up, I'd approve, then wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Uninstalled all non-Microsoft media programs except RealPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime, Acer Arcade (the laptop owner uses all those apps). Tried running Program Files\Windows Media Player\setup_wm.exe as Administrator, it launched but said that a newer version of WMP was already installed. Deleted the "Windows Media" folder located under %userprofile%\appdata\local\Microsoft then tried starting WMP - wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Register wmp.dll by typing "regsvr32 wmp.dll" in an Administrator cmd window then tried starting WMP - wmplayer would launch and terminate immediately. Run "SFC /SCANFILE" in an Administrator cmd window - get an error message that it found invalid system files and could not fix them, so look at the log file cbs.log. The log file shows that there are broken files associated with Windows Sidebar (which the user does not use) but none relating to WMP. Log off to safe mode and run "SFC /SCANFILE" in an Administrator cmd window again - same results. Try to download and install XP WMP - the microsoft.com site recognizes the OS as Genuine and allows the download, but when I launch the installer it says the system is not Genuine. Clicking the link directs me back to IE where I can authenticate the system as Genuine. The installer still fails to recognize the system as Genuine. It is a Genuine Vista installation. Try to run this update (KB931621). The installer said it did not apply to the system. Set Windows Media Player as default in Program Access and Defaults. Same results. Tried running "for %a in (%systemroot%\system32\wm*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %a" in an Administrator cmd window - same results. Went to this Knowledge Base article (947541) and ran the Microsoft Fix It. The Fix It ran successfully, but WMP would still launch and terminate immediately. Multiple reboots in the process of doing all of these steps. After all this, looked in the Application and Security logs. No events pertaining to WMP were logged. The computer was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and I have the Acer backup DVDs which will reimage the drive. I do not have Vista install DVDs. Reimaging the system is not an option. I'd also rather not restore the system to an earlier point unless it's absolutely necessary. What else can I do to repair or reinstall WMP?

• Can spliting an access database cause printer and reporting issues?

  We have a setup in which our users log into an access database using MS Access 2003 over an RDP connection. The user's login to their own machines first using a roaming profile. They then click an rdp connection file on the desktop and login to the remote server, via RDP, where they use MS Access as the shell; they don't have any access to any of explorer.exe features such as the start menu. The database they are logging into is more of an application, and provides functionality for entering data, querying data, and running reports via form based menus. It all worked pretty well until we split the database as it was nearing 2GBs in size. We moved out the payroll data into a separate partition, a database with the same name in a different folder, both of them on the server. Only two tables were moved into this new database partition, and they were re-linked as external tables in the new partition. Now while everything appears to be working fine data-wise after the split, there's a new issue when our users login via RDP and attempt to run reports: often the report will not display and instead the user sees an error about the click event of the form. At first I didn't even know it was printer-related, as we didn't really change anything related to the printers as far as I knew. Confused about the error, I talked to the guy who previously worked here and who was in charge of splitting the database, and he told me to tell the users to set their default printers (on their local machines, not on the server) to the "printer" Microsoft XPS Document Writer which isn't a physical printer at all. This allowed the user's to display their reports, but if they want to print out reports, they are required to go to the File menu and select Print, clicking the print icon on the toolbar takes them to a Save As... dialog as would be expected when using the Microsoft XPS Document Writer as your default printer. It's easy to tell if the user is having a problem because a quick mouseover of the printer icon will yield a tooltip of (none) when they cannot access their reports, and a tooltip of Microsoft XPS Document Writer when they can view the reports. If the user's printer is set to anything other than Microsoft XPS Document Writer as the default on their local machine, then (none) is always displayed when they rdp to the database. The RDP settings are setup to transfer the local printer to the server. Telling the users to do this to print has been more of a band-aid on the whole situation until we find a better solution and an explanation as to why splitting a database would prevent users from printing or even viewing access database reports. Which is why I'm here asking this question. Also of note all the printers on the network now show up on the server so that when the users do click File->Print to print their reports on a physical printer, they have to look through a huge list of printers to find theirs in the dropdown. So the little band-aid fix we have is not ideal. Previously, only the printers on the user's local machine displayed here, and not all the printers on the network. My co-worker seems to think this has something to do with permissions, I personally think it has to do with roaming profiles, and Group Policies which is what I've been reading up on. I really don't know how to fix this or how it is related to splitting the database.

Details: SQL Server 2005 SP1 is the next version of SQL Server. SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, is a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications. Details:Setup failed to verify the presence of Active Directory for this server. I've got a couple of questions I need answering, hope someone can help. Do I need to install Active Directory for SCOM to work? Can I run SCOM with an SQL 2008 Database? How do I get pass these problems?

  I am using the net.tcp protocol for various web services. When I reboot my Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) macbook pro, the service never restarts automatically, even though that is how they are set: The only relevant events I can see are in the System Event Log: Error 6/9/2011 19:47 Service Control Manager 7001 None The Net.Tcp Listener Adapter service depends on the Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service service which failed to start because of the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." This post suggests that it's something else blocking the port (in the post it's SCCM 2007 R3 Client which I don't use). What else could be the problem? If it's something else blocking the port, how do I figure out what? When I manually start the services, they start correctly. • Windows 7 XP Mode disable time sync

  So I've tried the trick from Virtual PC 2007, adding the following section to the vmc configuration file: <components> <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> </host_time_sync> </components> Later someone suggested VPC doesn't want the components level so added this instead: <host_time_sync> <enabled type="boolean">false</enabled> <frequency type="integer">15</frequency> <threshold type="integer">10</threshold> </host_time_sync> When I start up XP Mode (Microsoft Virtual PC) it completely ignores any of these two configuration changes and if I change the clock it's instantly reset to the host time again. I've also obviously disabled the Windows Time service but as it's not joined to a domain or set up with a source it shouldn't be involved anyway. I need to test an application over a few midnight passes and thought the XP Mode machine would be perfect, so I didn't have to mess with my workstation clock... is there any way to get the VPC guest to not sync time with the host? This is easy in Hyper-V ;p

• Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

  Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed. • ActiveSync devices causing accounts to lockout

  When a user changes his account password for whatever reason (read: expired), and the old password is stored in his mobile device connected through EAS. This will cause his account almost immediately - as it should according to the lockout policy defined in the AD. It was easy to figure out that part. The hard part is keeping it from happening. I looked everywhere. Nothing. Basically there are four parts to the puzzle: the EAS device, the TMG (ISA) server, the EAS protocol and finally the AD. None of them have a way to stop the EAS device from failing to authenticate. So I figured I'll have to come up with a clever workaround. And the only thing I could come up with is to create a group for all EAS users and exclude them from the lockout policy, which obviously defeats the whole purpose of the policy, or to educate the users to update their devices with the new passwords, which is impossible. The question: Can you think of any other way to prevent EAS from locking out the accounts? Environment: Mostly iOS devices all through EAS. TMG 2010. Exchange 2007. AD 2008 R2.

• Couldn't upload files to Sharepoint site while passing through Squid Proxy

  Hi all, we have this issue: one of our employees is collaborating with a supplier and he needs to upload documents on a Sharepoint site hosted on the supplier's main site. In our environment we use Squid Proxy to allow people navigate on the net (we have NTLM authentication and users transparently authenticate while using IE and FF). It seems that this specific Sharepoint site is using Integrated Windows Authentication only, and according to some research on the net it seems that this can have troubles with proxies. More specifically, we have tried two Squid versions: with Squid 3.0 we are unable to login to the site (the browser loads an empty page) with Squid 2.7 (that supports "Connection Pinning") we are able to login into the site, move on the different sections BUT.. when we try to upload a file that is bigger than a couple of KiloBytes (i.e. 10KB) the browser loads an error page (i think it's a 401 unauthorized but i must verify it) we've tried changing a couple of Squid options (in 2.7), what we got is that when you try to upload the file you got an authentication box (just like the initial login) and it refuses to go on even if you enter the same authentication credentials. What's really strange is that when you try to upload a small file (i.e. a text or binary 1KB file) the upload succeeds. I initially thought that maybe there was something misconfigured on their Sharepoint site but I've tried also this site: www.xsolive.com (it's a sharepoint 2007 demo site) and I've experienced the same problem. • Drop outs when accessing share by DFS name.

  I have a strange problem, aren't they all! I have a DFS root \domain\files\vms, it has a single target on a different server than the namespace. I can copy a test file set from the target directly via \server\vms$\testfiles and all is well, the files copy fine. I have repeated these tests many times. If I try and copy the files from the dfs root I get big pauses in the network traffic, about 50 seconds every couple of minutes, all the traffic just stops for the copy. If I start another copy between the same two machines during this pause, it starts copying fine, so I know it's not an issue with the disks on the server. Every once in a while the copy will fail, no errors, the progress bar will just zip all the way to 100% and the copy dialog will close. Checking the target folder show that the copy is incomplete. I've moved the LUN to another server and had the same problem. The servers are all 2008 R2, the clients are Vista x64, Windows7 x64 and 2008 R2, all have the same problem. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Stephen More Information: I've been running a NetMon trace on the connection when the file copy fails and what seems to be standing out is that when opening a file that the copy completes on the SMB command looks like this: SMB2: C CREATE (0x5), Name=Training\PDC2008\BB34 Live Services Notifications, Awareness, and Communications.wmv@#422082, Context=DHnQ, Context=MxAc, Context=QFid, Context=RqLs, Mid = 245376 SMB2: R CREATE (0x5), Context=MxAc, Context=RqLs, Context=DHnQ, Context=QFid, FID=0xFFFFFFFF00000015, Mid = 245376 But for the last file when the copy dialog closes looks like this: SMB2: C CREATE (0x5), Name=gt\files\Media\Training\PDC2008\BB36 FAST Building Search-Driven Portals with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Microsoft Silverlight.wmv@#859374, Context=DHnQ, Context=MxAc, Context=QFid, Context=RqLs, Mid = 77 SMB2: R , Mid = 77 - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (58) STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND The main difference seems to be in the name, one is relative to the open file share, the other has gained the gt\files\media prefix which is the name of the DFS target. These failures are always preceded by logoff and back on of the SMB target. Might have to bump this one to PSS.

• Vista Power Management GPO

  Hi, I've created a loopback GPO that has several settings (both computer and user) including a Custom User Interface (Access 2007 Application) and Power Management (has the computer sleep after being idle for 2 min). I'm also filtering so that this policy does not apply to "Admins" - only to "Users". The problem I'm having is when the "Users" login the Power Management settings don’t work, but they do for "Admins". For testing I'm allowing the "Users" to launch Task Manager and use the Run line, so I'll run Explorer and look at Power Management and it shows the settings from my GPO. So I created a test OU with copies of the aforementioned GPO, but removed the Custom User Interface and found the Power Management settings do work for both the "Users" and "Admins". When I add the Custom UI the Power Management settings break for the "User" but continue to work for "Admins". Do the Power Management options need to have User Interface be "Explorer.exe"? Is this a bug or am I doing this the wrong way? BTW the tablets are using Vista SP2. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Matt
