• Hack Fest Going Strong!

  Today was the first day of  the Hack Fest at Devoxx, the Java developer conference in Belgium.  The Hack Fest started with the Raspberry Pi & Leap Motion hands-on lab. Vinicius Senger introduced the Java Embedded, Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Java Champion Geert Bevin presented the Leap Motion, a controller sensing your hands and fingers to play games by controlling the mouse as an example. "Programmers are cooler than musicians because they can create entire universe using all senses" explained Geert In teams, participants started building applications using Raspberry Pi, sensors and relays. One team tested the performance of Tomcat, Java EE and Java Embedded Suite on the Raspberry Pi. Another used built an text animation using a LCD screen. Teams are using the Leap Motion to close and open programs on the desktop and other teams are using it as a game control.

  I'm trying to work around a known bug in Ubuntu 9.10, where using the scrollbar in emacs causes text to be highlighted, and the cursor to move. This page here shows that you can fix this by setting an environment variable before launching emacs: $ GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 emacs So a lazy fix would be to alias "emacs" in my .bashrc: alias emacs="GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 emacs" This, however, has the drawback of setting this environment variable for all subsequent commands run from that shell. Is there any way to set GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 for just emacs, whenever I run emacs?

• The 2012 JAX Innovation Awards

  A new article, now up on otn/java, titled “The 2012 JAX Innovation Awards” reports on  important Java developments celebrated by the Awards, which were announced in July of 2012. The Awards, given by S&S Media Group, aim to, "Reward those technologies, companies, organizations and individuals that make outstanding contributions to Java." The Awards fall into three categories: Most Innovative Java Technology, Most Innovative Java Company, and Top Java Ambassador. In addition, a finalist who did not win an award receives a Special Jury prize, "in acknowledgement of their unique contribution and positive impact on the Java ecosystem."The winners were: JetBrains for Most Innovative Java Company; Adam Bien as Top Java Ambassador; Restructure 101, created by Headway Software, as Most Innovative Technology; and Charles Nutter, Special Jury award. Each winner received a $2,500 prize. The five finalists in each category were invited to attend the JAX Conference in San Francisco, California. This year's winners each received a $2,500 prize. • Accessing ADF Faces components that are read-only from JavaScript

  Almost as a note to myself and to justify the time I spent on analyzing aproblem, a quick note on what to watch out for when working trying to access read-only ADF Faces components from JavaScript.  Those who tried JavaScript in ADF Faces probably know that you need to ensure the ADF Faces component  is represented by a JavaScript object on the client. You do this either implicitly by adding an af:clientListener component (in case you want to listen for a component event) or explicitly by setting the ADF Faces component clientComponent property to true. For the use case I looked at in JDeveloper 11g R1 (11.1.1.7) I needed to make an output text component clickable to call a JavaScript function in response. Though I added the af:clientComponent tag to the component I recognized that it also needed the clientComponent property set to true. Though I remember this as not being required in 11.1.1.6, I like the new behavior as it helps preventing read-only components from firing client side events unless you tell it to do so by setting the clientComponent property to true. Note: As the time of writing, JDeveloper 11.1.1.7 is not publicly available and I put the note in this blog as a reminder in case you ever hit a similar challenge so you know what to do.

• Best practice for scaling a single application source to multiple nodes

  I have an application which needs to scale horizontally to cover web and service nodes (at the moment they're all on one) but interact with the same set of databases and source files (both application code and custom assets). Database is no problem, it's handled already with replication in MongoDB. Also, the configuration of the servers are the same (100% linux). This question is literally about sharing a filesystem between machines so that its content is always correct, regardless of the node accessing it. My two thoughts have so far been NFS and SAN - SAN being prohibitively expensive and NFS seeing some performance issues on the second node with regards to glob()ing in PHP. Does anyone have recommended strategies or other techniques that don't involved sharding data across nodes or any potential gotchas in NFS that may cause slow disk seek times? To give you an idea of the scale, the main node initialises it's application modules in ~ 0.01 seconds. The secondary is taking ~2.2 seconds. They're VM's inside a local virtual network in ESXi and ping time between them is ~0.3ms

  Hi all, If there are any System Center Config Manager (SCCM) users out there, please clarify my doubt here. I have used the ConfigMgr console to distribute a custom application to a client machine. Now I need to distribute some updated files of that application. Isnt's it possible to add those files in the same package source used earlier and advertise again? Or should I use the SCCM software update section for this? Not sure if its only me, but the Software distribution process looks much easier than the Software Updates process in SCCM 2007. Please do let me know if there any online tutorials which explain how to update a custom application. Any help much appreciated.

• The Lease Standard Train is Back on Track

  As I was walking to the elevator, I ran into Seamus Moran, our resident accounting expert. Me: “Hi Seamus, where have you been? You don’t write, you don’t call, and you don’t send me flowers. I’ve been hearing more and more about the Lease Accounting topic. It looks like Congress is weighing in on it too and putting heat on FASB. According to a recent article in Reuters  “representatives Brad Sherman, a Democrat, and Republican John Campbell, have written to the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board warning of dire economic fallout from a plan to have companies put leases on their balance sheets." Here’s what Seamus had to say: Yes, but there have been some recent developments. The FASB and IASB cleared a logjam, resolved a final “content of the standard” issue, and articulated a way to move forward on Leases last Wednesday.  It looks like the Lease Standard Train is back on track.   We’ve just had a briefing from PwC. The Lease timeline now looks like this: Now to June 2012: The staff will write up the decisions June 2012: Boards will meet on “logistical” issues (glossed over) Oct, Nov, most likely December 2012: A New Lease Exposure Draft will be crafted January – April 2013: Public Comment period begins April to September 2013: Everyone to digest the comments and draft the final standard End of 2013 (Probably more like Early 2014): Publish the new Lease Accounting Standards 2015: Retroactive reporting 2017: New standard is effective It seems that leases under one year will be treated as “rent expense”. If it doesn’t cross two (annual) balance sheets, it doesn’t really matter. This is good news in terms of clarity, resolution, and moving forward on one of the last remaining items to converge the IFRS and U.S. GAAP standards. There are ambiguities, issues, concerns, et cetera, of course, and there are bright lines (“rules”) that bother the “no rules, please” people and ambiguities (“judgments”) that bother the “clarity, please” people, but at least the train isn’t falling off the tracks.

• Database Driven Web Application, C# Front-End and F# Back-End meaning

  Hi I am an intern working with ASP.NET. My current task is to make a website which will incorporate some jquery viewing features. This project seems to me will be primarily dealing with reading data from a database and making graphs out of them. This will require me to make custom queries from whatever the client is looking at. I think it is going to be what this guy calls an Ad Hoc Query tool My plan for this is to make it a database-driven website. So I can utilize the jquery dynamic viewing capabilities. I stumbled upon the functional programming paradigm and found F#. I read that because of it's functional programming paradigm, it makes it a good language to do asynchronous functions. I read about how you can use this with LINQ to SQL and how easy it is to make queries without actually putting the query language in. I understand the concept of the MVC design pattern. But I don't understand what they mean about C# being the front-end and F# being the back-end. Can someone clarify this to me? Also what are your thoughts about doing this project in this way? Any comments and thoughts are greatly appreciated. I feel as if learning F# will be a great learning experience for me. My guess is that the F# back-end is like the part where it controls the calls to the database. F# is possibly the model part of the design pattern. And C# is the controller. So HTML, Javascript and Jquery stuff will be my View design pattern. Clarify please?

• Oops, I left my kernel zone configuration behind!

  Most people use boot environments to move in one direction.  A system starts with an initial installation and from time to time new boot environments are created - typically as a result of pkg update - and then the new BE is booted.  This post is of little interest to those people as no hackery is needed.  This post is about some mild hackery. During development, I commonly test different scenarios across multiple boot environments.  Many times, those tests aren't related to the act of configuring or installing zone and I so it's kinda handy to avoid the effort involved of zone configuration and installation.  A somewhat common order of operations is like the following: # beadm create -e golden -a test1 # reboot Once the system is running in the test1 BE, I install a kernel zone. # zonecfg -z a178 create -t SYSsolaris-kz # zoneadm -z a178 install Time passes, and I do all kinds of stuff to the test1 boot environment and want to test other scenarios in a clean boot environment.  So then I create a new one from my golden BE and reboot into it. # beadm create -e golden -a test2 # reboot Since the test2 BE was created from the golden BE, it doesn't have the configuration for the kernel zone that I configured and installed.  Getting that zone over to the test2 BE is pretty easy.  My test1 BE is really known as s11fixes-2. root@vzl-212:~# beadm mount s11fixes-2 /mnt root@vzl-212:~# zonecfg -R /mnt -z a178 export | zonecfg -z a178 -f - root@vzl-212:~# beadm unmount s11fixes-2 root@vzl-212:~# zoneadm -z a178 attach root@vzl-212:~# zoneadm -z a178 boot On the face of it, it would seem as though it would have been easier to just use zonecfg -z a178 create -t SYSolaris-kz within the test2 BE to get the new configuration over.  That would almost work, but it would have left behind the encryption key required for access to host data and any suspend image.  See solaris-kz(5) for more info on host data.  I very commonly have more complex configurations that contain many storage URIs and non-default resource controls.  Retyping them would be rather tedious.

  Of course many skills and characteristics recruiters are looking for are job specific. But whether you are a graduate fresh out of college or seasoned in the workplace, recruiters are also looking for generic skills and attitude to see whether you are a good fit to the company. So make sure you prepare and show through examples that you have these skills. 1. Drive/passion Liking the job you are applying for is paramount and something recruiters are always looking for. Show and prove your drive for the role and/or the field you are applying for. Always be prepared to pitch yourself, this shows your drive in the role you are applying for. 2. Communication skills People often make the mistake by thinking this skill is related to how good they are able to talk about their background and expertise. This is important, but as least as important is it that you listen well to questions that are asked. Make sure you answer to the point and ask questions if you want questions to be clarified. This shows your interest in the role and the ability to communicate clearly. This also helps you building trust with the recruiter every time you speak to him/her. 3. Confidence Recruiters are looking for the best candidate for the job. So if you don’t think you are the best candidate why should the recruiter? Show with confidence, without being arrogant (think about building trust), why you are the right person for the job. Confidence also shows in your answers to difficult questions. Be confident enough to explain why some experiences went wrong and how you learnt from them. If you don’t have a direct explanation on a question, it is better to ask for a second to think instead of a random answer. 4. Vision The main reason to hire graduates for many companies is that graduates are perceived to be flexible. The organisation will train and up skill you in the direction best suitable for the organisation. However the most intense learning path is realised when you also know where you want to go. Companies are often happy to accommodate you to support with training and development, but if you don’t have a clear vision on what you want to achieve for yourself and what value you bring to the company, recruiters can decide you are not the right candidate as they are afraid you aren’t going to stay in the company. 5.
