• PS2 Eyetoy Recording Quality

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and a PS2 eyetoy "Namtai". Don't worry - this is not the sterotypical " how do I get my eyetoy working" question. My eyetoy works fine on Cheese, gucview and various other media software like VLC. However, It seems like I am capped by 25fps. If I recall, the eyetoy is much better than this (~60fps) but cannot find any way to fix this. The best program that I have have found is VLC because its advanced options allow you to change many settings but the framerate setting appears to have no effect. What software or settings can I use to take full advantage of my eyetoy? To give you the full information I wish to attach multiple eyetoys to the system and record from all of them. (Security software like motion and zoneminder, I couldn't get installed correctly on my system- so I haven't tried those yet). edit - I tried the same camera on a Windows system and the frame rate is much better in VLC compared to the Ubuntu system. Mind you with default settings in Windows VLC, the resolution isn't great. However, in Skype for example the resolution is amazing and the framerate is good. It seems there must be some settings I am missing somewhere because it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem...

• Sprite batching in OpenGL

  I've got a JAVA based game with an OpenGL rendering front that is drawing a large amount of sprites every frame (during testing it peaked at 700). Now this game is completely unoptimized. There is no spatial partitioning (so a sprite is drawn even if it isn't on screen) and every sprite is drawn separately like this: graphics.glPushMatrix(); { graphics.glTranslated(x, y, 0.0); graphics.glRotated(degrees, 0, 0, 1); graphics.glBegin(GL2.GL_QUADS); graphics.glTexCoord2f (1.0f, 0.0f); graphics.glVertex2d(half_size , half_size); // upper right // same for upper left, lower left, lower right graphics.glEnd(); } graphics.glPopMatrix(); Currently the game is running at +-25FPS and is CPU bound. I would like to improve performance by adding spatial partitioning (which I know how to do) and sprite batching. Not drawing sprites that aren't on screen will help a lot, however since players can zoom out it won't help enough, hence the need for batching. However sprite batching in OpenGL is a bit of mystery to me. I usually work with XNA where a few classes to do this are built in. But in OpenGL I don't know what to do. As for further optimization, the game I'm working on as a few interesting characteristics. A lot of sprites have the same texture and all the sprites are square. Maybe these characteristics will help determine an efficient batching technique?

• how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?

• What is the most concise, unambiguous syntax for operator associated methods (for overloading etc.) that doesn't pollute the namespace?

  Python tends to add double underscores before its built-in or overloadable operator methods, like __add(), whereas C++ requires declaring overloaded operators as operator + (Thing& thing) { /* code */ } for example. Personally I like the operator syntax because it seems to be more explicit and keeps these operator overloading methods separated from other methods without introducing weird prefix notation. What are your thoughts? Also, what about the case of built-in methods that are needed for the programming language to work properly? Is name mangling (like adding __ prefix or sys or something) the best solution here? What do you think about having another type of method declaration, like ... "system method" for lack of creativity at the moment. So there would be two kinds of declarations: int method_name() { ... } system int method_name() { ... } ... and the call would need to be different to distinguish between them. obj.method_name(); vs obj:method_name(); perhaps, assuming a language where : can be unambiguously used in this situation. obj.method_name() vs obj.(system method_name)() Sure, the latter is ugly, but the idea is to make the common case simple and system stuff should be kept out of the way. Maybe the Objective-C notation of method calls? [obj method_name]? Are there more alternatives? Please make suggestions.

  No doubt, with all the media reports about stolen databases and private information, a major concern when committing to a public or private cloud must be preventing unauthorized access of data and applications. In this article, we discuss the security features of Oracle Solaris 11 that provide a bullet-proof cloud environment. As an example, we show how the Oracle Solaris Remote Lab implementation utilizes these features to provide a high level of security for its users. Note: This is the second article in a series on cloud building with Oracle Solaris 11. See Part 1 here.  When we build a cloud, the following aspects related to the security of the data and applications in the cloud become a concern: • Sensitive data must be protected from unauthorized access while residing on storage devices, during transmission between servers and clients, and when it is used by applications. • When a project is completed, all copies of sensitive data must be securely deleted and the original data must be kept permanently secure. • Communications between users and the cloud must be protected to prevent exposure of sensitive information from “man in a middle attacks.” • Limiting the operating system’s exposure protects against malicious attacks and penetration by unauthorized users or automated “bots” and “rootkits” designed to gain privileged access. • Strong authentication and authorization procedures further protect the operating system from tampering. • Denial of Service attacks, whether they are started intentionally by hackers or accidentally by other cloud users, must be quickly detected and deflected, and the service must be restored. In addition to the security features in the operating system, deep auditing provides a trail of actions that can identify violations,issues, and attempts to penetrate the security of the operating system. Combined, these threats and risks reinforce the need for enterprise-grade security solutions that are specifically designed to protect cloud environments.   In my previous post, I introduced my problem, but I didn’t explain the problem with Entity Framework When you try the solution indicated you will take the following error: LINQ to Entities don’t recognize the method 'System.String Join(System.String, System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[System.String])’ of the method, and this method can’t be translated into a stored expression. • How do I make a Live USB without destroying my Windows computer?

  Unlike every other post I have read, let me begin by saying that I am TERRIFIED of destroying my Windows 7 home system in the attempt of making a bootable Ubuntu Thumb Drive. I very specifically DO NOT want to attempt configuring a dual boot system. What I am seeking is a portable operating system on a thumb drive, through which I can run my COREL software via VirtualBox-4.1.16-78094-Win. I want to be able to use my own software on my work computer without any worries about screwing up the host system anywhere I go. Supposedly, I just made a bootable Thumb drive, having successfully loaded the ISO for ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386 using Pendrivelinux's Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.1 However, all that I get is a Thumb Drive that wants to install Unbutu onto my PC's HDD. I am not finding any clear path to this end in the posts I am reading. Like it or not, Windows is a fact of life for me. The goal is to be able to use my software on my work PC without doing anything intrusive that will cost me my job. If I have a meltdown on my PC at home trying to make this happen, it will be nearly as bad. Is this even Do-Able? Can the process be made clear? Thank You, Ubuntu World ...!

• Ubuntu (i386 - 32bit) 12.04 LTS [DESKTOP] - Freezes During Preparing to Install

  I know this is for the Desktop version of Ubuntu, but I definitely plan on installing the server as well. I just want a GUI to manage my server. Here is what I have done: Placed Ubuntu i386/32bit 12.04 LTS [DESKTOP] disc in the disc tray. The disc loads fine. Clicked install Ubuntu. Without checking the download updates while installing or install this third-party software. Clicked continue. Mouse cursor turns to spinning circle and remains a spinning circle while the screen freezes its place at "Preparing to install Ubuntu". I tried not checking any of the boxes and clicking continue. I tried checking Download updates while installing. I tried checking Install this third-party software. I tried checking BOTH Download updates while installing AND Install this third-party software. Does anyone else face this very same issue? Is there a workaround for this problem? Do I need to use a lower version of Ubuntu? If so, which version do you recommend for my system specifications? My system meets the system requirements. Here are my exact system specifications. (Custom modifications: 320GBx2 HDD && 256MB AGP GFX card && 1GBx2 RAM)

• How to Draw Lines on the Screen (Part 2)

  In part 1, I showed how you can click on the screen to create widgets and then connect those widgets together. But that's not really drawing, is it? (And I'm surprised nobody made that point in the comments to that blog entry.) Drawing doesn't really revolve around connecting dots together. It's more about using a free-flow style and being able to randomly write stuff onto a screen, without constraints. Something like this: I achieved the above by changing one line of code from the original referred to above. Instead of using a "mousePressed" event, I'm now using a "mouseDragged" event. That's all. And now the widgets are created when I drag my mouse on the scene. (I removed the rectangular select action, since that's also invoked during dragging and since that doesn't apply to the above scenario.) Now, the next step is to rewrite the NetBeans Platform Paint Application Tutorial, so that the Visual Library is used. That would be pretty cool.

• ubuntu 12.10 grub doesn't appear efi mode

  After a number of failed attempts on installing Ubuntu and Linux in the hybrid-gpt of Windows, in which I wanted different partitions by gparted, I ended up creating againg a conventional partitions table within the conventional system. This photo is not mine because as creating the partition I did not think in taking photos, but I am showing you it so that you can see the format “MS-DOS”, the standard format of gparted. My neetbook is a k55MV Asus 500GB (the page don't allow me to put 3 hiperlink I will put it at the end in a new coment 1) I installed Windows by creating a partition just for it. Windows created two partitions else for starting the system up. However creating it on ms-dos appear now in gpt view fotos 2) With the rest of the space, I created a 90-gigabyte partition for Ubuntu and the “swap” of 4 gb. The other partitions are for data. 3) I assured myself about installing Ubuntu in the partition whose format was ext4, for using that partition as base and to install the “grub” on the base of 500gb. I have boot the system up, Ubuntu is loaded but the grub does not appear. I have tried by pressing “beginning” “UPPER CASE LETTER”, but no way! • Significant amount of the time, I can't think of a reason to have an object instead of a static class. Do objects have more benefits than I think?

  I understand the concept of an object, and as a Java programmer I feel the OO paradigm comes rather naturally to me in practice. However recently I found myself thinking: Wait a second, what are actually the practical benefits of using an object over using a static class (with proper encapsulation and OO practices)? I could think of two benefits of using an object (both significant and powerful): Polymorphism: allows you to swap functionality dynamically and flexibly during runtime. Also allows to add new functionality 'parts' and alternatives to the system easily. For example if there's a Car class designed to work with Engine objects, and you want to add a new Engine to the system that the Car can use, you can create a new Engine subclass and simply pass an object of this class into the Car object, without having to change anything about Car. And you can decide to do so during runtime. Being able to 'pass functionality around': you can pass an object around the system dynamically. But are there any more advantages to objects over static classes? Often when I add new 'parts' to a system, I do so by creating a new class and instantiating objects from it. But recently when I stopped and thought about it, I realized that a static class would do just the same as an object, in a lot of the places where I normally use an object. For example, I'm working on adding a save/load-file mechanism to my app. With an object, the calling line of code will look like this: Thing thing = fileLoader.load(file); With a static class, it would look like this: Thing thing = FileLoader.load(file); What's the difference? Fairly often I just can't think of a reason to instantiate an object when a plain-old static-class would act just the same. But in OO systems, static classes are fairly rare. So I must be missing something. Are there any more advantages to objects other from the two that I listed? Please explain.

• New mainboard with 890GX chipset disables lightdm, even when using old graphics card instead of onboard graphics, startx works (Xubuntu 12.04)

  I am trying to migrate an installed Xubuntu 12.04 to a new mainbaord with 890GX chipset. The Chipset has a built-in Radeon HD 4290 graphics. The system boots, but X won't start. The most suspicious message in Xorg.0.log is "ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log". When searching for this message, I found some answers like "remove your xorg.conf" (but there is none on my system). Or bug reports for fglrx (but that's not installed on my system). Or NVidia-related questions ... Interestingly, "startx" succeeds in opening a basic XFCE session. Then, I tried to disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS setup and use the old PCIe graphics card (Radeon HD 5450). No change. I don't think I can just blacklist a module, because the graphics card and the onboard graphics are covered by the same module. At the moment, use the free radeon drivers, not the restricted fglrx driver. If possible, I would like to stay on the free driver for two reasons: The fglrx driver from the ubuntu packages fails to build the kernel module. In past, I had bad experiences with the fglrx driver and changing screen config with RandR. When I connect the harddisk and the graphics card to my old mainboard, everything works again. This means, I have not screwed up my system configuration wile installing and removing the fglrx drivers. When I ordered this mainboard, I thought the 890GX is old enough to be supported and if not, I could still use my graphics card as backup solution. But without even the backup soluton, I'm screwed ... Any ideas ? Thanks and Regards, Kubuntu-Man (now switched to Xubuntu)

  Hello there, I am new to JqGrid, so please bare with me. I am having some problems with styling the cells when I use a showlink formatter.   Hi all, I am in need of some help with an error message I get with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I would like to create a gallery for my site so I downloaded the NotesForGallery from codeplex. I have added the reference into the project like it told me to in the installation instructions.   hi all, I have two files named as TimeSheet.aspx.cs and TimSheet.aspx ,code of the file are given below for your reference. when i build the application im getting error "The name 'GridView1' does not exist in the current context" even thought i have a control with the id GridView1 and i have added the runat="server" as well. Im not able to figure out what is causing this issue.Can any one figure whats happen here. • Am I going about this the right way?

  Hey Guys, I'm starting a WPF project, and just finished the base of the UI, it seems very convoluted though, so I'm not sure if I've gone around laying it out in the right way. I don't want to get to start developing the back-end and realise that I've done the front wrong, and make life harder for myself. Coming from a background of <DIV's and CSS to style this is a lot different, and really want to get it right from the start. Essentially it's a one week calendar (7 days, Mon-Sunday, defaulting to the current week.) Which will eventually link up to a DB and if I have an appointment for something on this day it will show it in the relevant day. I've opted for a Grid rather than ListView because of the way it will work I will not be binding the results to a collection or anything along those lines. Rather I will be filling out a Combo box within the canvas for each day (yet to be placed in the code) for each event and on selection it will show me further details. • Android ListView background colors always showing grey.

  I have a ListView that I'm populating from a custom ListAdapter. Inside the Adapter (in the getView(int, View, ViewGroup) method) I'm setting the background color of the View using setBackgroundColor(int). The problem is that no matter what color I set the background to it always comes out a dark grey. It might also be worth noting that I'm using the Light theme. • How to represent "options" for my plugin architecture (C# .NET WinForms)

  Okay basically here's where I'm at. I have a list of PropertyDescriptor objects. These describe the custom "Options" fields on my Plugins, aka: public class MyPlugin : PluginAbstract, IPlugin { [PluginOption("This controls the color of blah blah blah")] [DefaultValue(Color.Red)] public Color TheColor { get; set; } [PluginOption("The number of blah blah blahs")] [DefaultValue(10)] public int BlahBlahBlahs { get; set; } } So I did all the hard parts: I have all the descriptions, default values, names and types of these custom "plugin options". MY QUESTION IS: When a user loads a plugin, how should I represent these options for them to config? On the back end I'll be using XML for the config, so that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking on the front end: What kind of WinForms control should I use to let users configure the options of a plugin, when there will be an unknown amount of options and different types used etc.?

  Nice and (hopefully) easy. I am trying to work out how to grab the variable #XXX from a text file (css file) containing strings like hr { margin: 18px 0 17px; border-color: #ccc; } h1 a:hover, h2 a:hover, h3 a:hover { color: #001100; } Which I would like to return as ccc 777 The plan then is to throw this through sort and uniq and the end up with a defining colourscheme for the page. Basically, I can't work out how to go from matching /color:#...[...]/ to just printing out the wildcarded sections.
