  • Is it worth moving from stored procedures to linq ?

    I'm looking at standardizing programming in an organisaiton. Half uses stored procedures and the other half Linq. From what i've read there is still some debate going on on this topic. My concern is that MS is trying to slip in it's own proprietry query language 'linq' to make SQL redundant. If a few years back microsoft had tried to win customers from oracle and sybase with their MSSQL database and stated that it didn't use SQL by their own proprietry query langues ie linq. I doubt many would have switched. I believe that is exactly what is happening now by introducting it into the applicaiton business layer. I have used MS for many years but there is one gripe that I have with them and that is that they change their direction a lot. By a lot I mean new releases of .net, silverlight etc are more than 30% different from previous version. So by the time you become productive a new release is on the way. As things stand now a web developer using .net would need to know either vb.net or c#, xml, xaml,javascript,html, sql and now linq. That doesn't make for good productivity in my books. My concern is that once we all start using linq MS will start changing it between releases. and it will become an ever changing landscape. I believe that 'linq to sql' has already been deprecated. At leas with SQL we are dealing with a more stable and standardized language. Are we looking at a programming revolution or a marketing campaign? As far as I know other languages like Cobol have stayed the same for years. A cobol program from 20 years ago could pick up todays code and start working on it. Could a Vb3 person work on a modern .net web app ? Would these large changes need to be made if the underlying original foundation had been sound ? I worry about following MS shaking roadmap with it's deadends and double backs. are there any architects out there who feel the same ? regards Josef

  • Implementing PyMyType_Check methods with Python C API?

    All the Python-provided types have a check method (i.e., PyList_Check) that allows you to check if an arbitrary PyObject* is actually a specific type. How can I implement this for my own types? I haven't found anything good online for this, though it seems like a pretty normal thing to want to do. Also, maybe I'm just terrible at looking through large source trees, but I cannot for the life of me find the implementation of PyList_Check or any of it's companions in the Python (2.5) source.

  • Using oAuth (Twitter, LinkedIn) for login to a web app

    Should I use oAuth, for example LinkedIn or Twitter, as my signin mechanism for my app? It seems that most apps just use oAuth to connect other services to it, but they make you set up your own user/password after you use oAuth (including StackOverflow), and I'm not really sure why this is. Would love some insight here. Thank you.

They said they'd train me, but I want to take some initiative to learn about it on my own to be ahead. Where's the best place to start (tutorials, books, etc)? I want to learn more about the SQL language moreso than any of the fancy point and click stuff.

  • How should I provide access to this custom DAL?

    I'm writing a custom DAL (VB.NET) for an ordering system project. I'd like to explain how it is coded now, and receive some alternate ideas to make coding against the DAL easier/more readable. The DAL is part of an n-tier (not n-layer) application, where each tier is in it's own assembly/DLL. The DAL consists of several classes that have specific behavior. For instance, there is an Order class that is responsible for retrieving and saving orders. Most of the classes have only two methods, a "Get" and a "Save," with multiple overloads for each. These classes are marked as Friend and are only visible to the DAL (which is in it's own assembly). In most cases, the DAL returns what I will call a "Data Object." This object is a class that contains only data and validation, and is located in a common assembly that both the BLL and DAL can read. To provide public access to the DAL, I currently have a static (module) class that has many shared members. A simplified version looks something like this: Public Class DAL Private Sub New End Sub Public Shared Function GetOrder(OrderID as String) as OrderData Dim OrderGetter as New OrderClass Return OrderGetter.GetOrder(OrderID) End Function End Class Friend Class OrderClass Friend Function GetOrder(OrderID as string) as OrderData End Function End Class The BLL would call for an order like this: DAL.GetOrder("123456") As you can imagine, this gets cumbersome very quickly. I'm mainly interested in structuring access to the DAL so that Intellisense is very intuitive. As it stands now, there are too many methods/functions in the DAL class with similar names. One idea I had is to break down the DAL into nested classes: Public Class DAL Private Sub New End Sub Public Class Orders Private Sub New End Sub Public Shared Function Get(OrderID as string) as OrderData End Function End Class End Class So the BLL would call like this: DAL.Orders.Get("12345") This cleans it up a bit, but it leaves a lot of classes that only have references to other classes, which I don't like for some reason. Without resorting to passing DB specific instructions (like where clauses) from BLL to DAL, what is the best or most common practice for providing a single point of access for the DAL?

    Hi there, I am currently building a webshop for my own where I want to increment the product-stock when the user fails to complete payment within 10 minutes after the customer placed the order. I want to gather information from this thread to make a design decision. I am using SQL Server 2008 and ASP.NET 3.5.     Is there any JavaScript library that makes a dictionary out of the query string, ASP.NET style? Something that would be used like: var query = window.location.querystring["query"]? Is a "query string" called something else outside the .NET realm? Why isn't location.search broken into a key/value collection already? EDIT: I have written my own function, thanks, but does any major JavaScript library do this?

  • markitup wysiwyg with a standard HTML form

    Hi, I'm trying to use the markitup editor on my site and I'm having a problem trying to figure out what I need to do to submit the text area to my server side script. I'm guessing there is something simple that needs to be done but my lack of JS/JQuery knowledge is making it really hard to find a answer The editor works fine, I just want to use my own form and submit button with it, however when I try to submit the form I don't get any of the textarea data in my script. Any idea what I need to do?   • Python networkx DFS or BFS missing?

  • Display SharePoint lookup field on publishing website

I only want the selected text to be displayed when you view the page not in edit mode, but when I use the Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls.LookupField it generates a hyperlink to the SharePoint list item (obviously bad). But the essence of the error I'm getting is this: test_2.scala:32: error: type mismatch; found : (A, A) = Unit required: Function2 $amount.foreach( (k:A,v:A) = { How is this error conceivably possible? Isn't (A, A) => Unit always a subtype of Function2 regardless of what else might be going on in the code?

  • Unloading vertex buffers in OpenGL

    I have an Android live wallpaper that I suspect is leaking memory, probably either textures or vertex arrays. I'm calling glDeleteTextures on my texture IDs, but don't see any sort of equivalent for my vertex buffers. I'd like to be able to be sure both my textures and buffers are getting unloaded by OpenGL, am i missing something? The documents I've found seem to suggest OpenGL just works it out on its own, but that's not giving me a lot of comfort.
