  • What Would You Consider Best Practice Workflow Tools For Web Application (PHP) Development?

    I'm really hoping somebody with more experience can edit the question as per my examples of answers: • using version control • test driven development • debugging code (xdebug for php) • use of UML diagrams • use of OOP for maintainable, reusable code • use of frameworks (like Zend Framework for php) for rapid application development Anything else or an elaboration of what I mentioned above? Basically, I'm in the middle of forming a team of developers (I'm a developer myself) and I'd like some advice on how professional programmers/designers etc should work together and what standards/paradigms they should use. Also, if anybody has any books or links on the subject I'd welcome that!     Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized.   • Should I Learn C/C++ Even If I Just Want To Do Web Programming?

    My goal is to be able to create online apps and dynamic, database driven websites. For instance, if in the future I get the idea for the next Digg or Facebook, I want to be able to code it myself. To arrive there I think I have basically two paths: Path 1 Start at a basic level, learning C, then C++ for OOP, then algorithms and data structures, with the goal of getting a solid grasp of computer programming. Only then move to PHP/MySQL/HTTP and start working on practical programming projects. Path 2 Start directly with PHP/MySQL/HTTP and getting my hands dirty with practical projects right away. What would you guys recommend?

    I saw this by Adam on Twitter today: Interesting. Let's try it. Here's my method "getCustomerId". I select it, right-click, and choose "Find Usages" (or press Alt-F7): A nice dialog appears: Then click "Find" and, guess what, this is what I see (click to enlarge it): Clearly, as you can see, I'm not only finding the Java controller class where the getter is used, but also the Facelets files, and, within those, the exact lines where the JSF expression language makes use of the getter. This is not a new feature, tried it and got the same result in 7.1.1, but it's really cool to know about nonetheless.

    I am new to version control system and in my new job they are using mercurial. All other commnads are easy to type from linux but i get to problem with i have to do idff merge of documents with diffput and diffget. I am using the eclispe and have used the mercurial plugin for eclipse. So far its commiting the changes but i am not getting anything , where i can see the two files for merging. Any ideas

Basically looking for quicker way to write notes on a site other than taking a screen shot my self and putting it into photoshop.   • Moving tool bars in Acrobat X Pro

    I'm using Acrobat X pro for Windows. I found that two lines of tool bar takes too much space. So I would like to combine them into one line, or move them to left or right side. I do know that I can hide those tool bars by Ctrl+H. But I want to use them without hiding. Since most documents I use are letter size and portrait type, tool bars on the left or right side would be much more efficient way of using space. Does anybody know how I can do this? (I think I could do it in Acrobat 9..but I can't in X version)

    I just switched to windows 7 from Vista and a lot of programs/games don't work anymore. The issue is that some games need a specific .NET framework version. when I try to install that it says that I should turn on/off windows features. I go to that and I find .NET framework in the list and tried both checking it and unchecking it. Both don't work and I still get the message that I need to turn on/off that thing. Any suggestion please? I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
