• How to customize the gnome classic panel

  First the picture: As you can see in the image, the color used for the icons and words Applications and Places (In spanish in this case) they have a different background dark gray color than the rest of the panel. Also the icons look rather bigger in that panel. Now my questions are: Can the background colors be customized so they look the same all the way in the panel. Can the icons be somehow minimized a little so they do not look strange (bigger actually) How to edit the way to add icons to the panel. I have to actually have to press the ALT key then right click on it to add something. That extra key is not friendly at all. In this particular case am trying to help an older man start in Ubuntu. Unity is too much for him but Gnome is friendlier for him (Learning curve is not the best for older people.. specially 68+ year old people).

  In large procedural landscape games, the land seems dull, but that's probably because the real world is largely dull, with only limited places where the scenery is dramatic or tactical. Looking at world generation from this point of view, a landscape generator for a game needs to not follow the rules of landscaping, but instead some rules married to the expectations of the gamer. For example, there could be a choke point / route generator that creates hills ravines, rivers and mountains between cities, rather than cities plotted on the land based on the resources or conditions generated by the mountains and rainfall patterns. Is there any existing work being done like this? Start with cities or population centres and then add in terrain afterwards?

• Firefox: This connection is untrusted + Behind corporate firewall

  I've seen some similar issues strewn throughout Google's results about this, but none seem to be corporate-specific. I continually get the 'This connection is untrusted' screen every time I attempt to log into a secure site...for instance Gmail. This is pretty annoying as sometimes I have to go through the process of adding the exception two or three times before it finally lets me into Gmail. I am behind a corporate firewall, going through an internal proxy server to get to the Internet, so there is no possibility for me to update the firewall...etc. Does anybody know a way around this? Can it simply be disabled (and is that safe)? EDIT I'm going to reopen this question with a bit of new information. I have been using Google Chrome lately until today, and one thing that I noticed was that I never had this issue when using either Chrome or Internet Explorer. Is there something that these other browsers do that I need to manually do in FF?

• Setting environment variables when executing Eclipse via Unity launcher icon

  My question is a followup for the following: How to pin Eclipse to the Unity launcher? I created Eclipse's icon to the Unity launcher based on the selected answer at the above link. However, when I launch Eclipse via this icon, the environment variables are not properly set. I need to call . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 to use Intel compiler tools in Eclipse. However, launching via the icon can't do it. Of course, running manually Eclipse on the terminal is okay. I tried to place . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 on several places such as /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc. But, still not working. Where is the best and correct place to call such environment setup?

  I have a business class internet connection and need to setup a static ip address for a machine. I did a search online and only find how to setup static local ip addresses (like 192.168..). I tried the same technique, and only setup the ip address and netmask, but after restart networking the computer could not connect to the outside world. This is what I did: 1) edit /etc/network/interfaces iface eth0 inet static address 173.10.xxx.xx netmask 255.255.255.252 2) edit /etc/resolv.conf search wp.comcast.net nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx 3) restart network sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart Now the last step didn't report error, ifconfig shows the ip address was set, but this server cannot connect to outside world, ping google.com and reports "unknown host google.com". Any ideas?

• How to make "xset s off" survive a reboot (12.04)

  On an almost-fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, after disabling screen turning off, screen lock, and suspension on inactivity from all the (two) places one can find under Ubuntu's System Settings, the screen still turns black after some minutes of inactivity. I can't tell for sure whether it only becomes blank/black or turns off. I've uninstalled gnome-screensaver, which didn't change anything. Of the several answers I found out there (most of which I didn't try because they were either unclear or reported to not work for everybody), I tried one that DID work: sudo xset s off after which I left the computer unattended for hours and the screen never turned black, so it definitely worked. HOWEVER it does not survive a reboot. After reboot, screen starts turning black again after N minutes of inactivity. Given that "xset s off" does work until reboot, how do I make that setting permanent? I guess I could create a script that runs at startup issuing that command, but I think that would be a horrible hack and there should be a cleaner way to accomplish this.

  I use the stripped down Gnome UI for 13.04 (Gnome-no effects) and on the bottom there is a panel where you can put icons for app launchers, by dragging them from applications menu. This is probably a really dumb question, but I can't figure out how to REMOVE a launcher icon from that panel once I put there! How is this done? Note - I saw another answer that said click alt-super and right click on top panel - I clicked remove launcher and now my top Application and Places menus are gone! How do I get them back - all screwed up now.

• Host is unreacheble with static networking configuration via /etc/network/interfaces while GUI NetworkManager is ok

  I have some trouble setting-up the network interface using the static IP configuration. I run ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.11.0-22 with the back-ports enabled. I followed these instructions from help.ubuntu.com but there seems to exist some conflict between the GUI approach (NetworkManager) and the command line approach. $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.1.1.50 gateway 10.1.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 dns-nameservers 192.168.3.45 192.168.8.10 $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart I than try to ping for example google.com ping -c 3 www.google.com the response is that the host is unreachable. The icon on the top right of the desktop says: wired network disconnected. If I work using the GUI approach (Edit Connections and so on...) all works great.   I'm trying to make an ad-hoc network for personal uses.. while creating it, it was created but when i tried to turn internet sharing on i got this error Windows could not set up internet connection sharing (ICS) I looked up google what is ICS and i found that it was an option in sharing tab in my connection properties, so i tried to enable it and i got this error An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled. The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion. I tried to also look up google for solution for this and i ended up with nothing really, i tried to enable the required services @ services.msc for it.. rebooted and still same thing it was working a while ago (had a problem at enabling my wireless for about 2 months and i just found a solution for it..) for some reason it doesn't now

Chrome has struggled with performance on Android, but hits its stride on the Nexus 7 (2013). Great, tablet-optimized apps for all of Google’s services, from YouTube to Gmail and Google Maps. Everything you need for reading, from Amazon’s Kindle app for eBooks, Flipboard and Feedly for new articles from websites, and other services like the popular Pocket read-it-later service. Apps for most popular media services, from Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube for videos to Pandora, Spotify, and Rdio for music. A few things aren’t available — you won’t find Apple’s iTunes and Amazon still doesn’t offer an Amazon Instant Video app for Android, while they do for iPad and even their own Android-based Kindle Fire devices. Android has very good app coverage when it comes to consuming content, whether you’re reading websites and ebooks or watching videos and listening to music. You can play almost any Android smartphone game, too. For content consumption, Android is better than something like Windows 8, which lacks apps for Google services like YouTube and still doesn’t have apps for popular media services like Spotify and Rdio. How Android Scales Smartphone Apps Let’s look at how Android scales smartphone apps. Now, bear with us here — we know “scaling” is a dirty word considering how poorly Apple’s iPad scales iPhone apps, but it’s not as bad on Android. When an iPad runs an iPhone app, it simply doubles the pixels and effectively zooms in. For example, if you had  Twitter app with five tweets visible at once on an iPhone and ran the same app on an iPad, the iPad would simply “zoom in” and enlarge the same screen — you’d still see five tweets, but each tweet would appear larger. This is why developers create optimized iPad apps with their own interfaces. It’s especially important on Apple’s iOS. Android devices come in all shapes and sizes, so Android apps have a smarter, more intelligent way to adapt to different screen sizes. Let’s say you have a Twitter app designed for smartphones and it only shows five tweets at once when run on a phone. If you ran the same app on a tablet, you wouldn’t see the same five tweets — you’d see ten or more tweets. Rather than simply zooming in, the app can show more content at the same time on a tablet, even if it was never optimized for tablet-size screens. While apps designed for smartphones aren’t generally ideal, they adapt much better on Android than they do on an iPad. This is particularly true when it comes to games. You’re capable of playing almost any Android smartphone game on an Android tablet, and games generally adapt very well to the larger screen. This gives you access to a huge catalog of games. It’s a great option to have, especially when you look at Microsoft’s Window 8 and consider how much better the touch-based app and game selection would be if Microsoft allowed its users to run Windows Phone games on Windows 8. 7-inch vs 10-inch Tablets The Twitter example above wasn’t just an example. The official Twitter app for Android still doesn’t have a tablet-optimized interface, so this is the sort of situation you’d have to deal with on an Android tablet. On the popular Nexus 7, Twitter is an example of a smartphone app that actually works fairly well — in portrait mode, you can see many more tweets on screen at the same time and none of the space really feels all that wasted. This is important to consider — smartphone apps like Twitter often scale quite well to 7-inch screens because a 7-inch screen is much closer in form factor to a smartphone than a 10-inch screen is. When you begin to look at 10-inch Android tablets that are the same size as an iPad, the situation changes. While the Twitter app works well enough on a Nexus 7, it looks horrible on a Nexus 10 or other 10-inch tablet. Running many smartphone-designed apps — possible with the exception of games — on a 10-inch tablet is a frustrating, poor experience. There’s much more white, empty space in the interface. It feels like you’re using a smartphone app on a large screen, and what’s the point of that? A tablet-optimized Twitter app for Android is finally on its way, but this same situation will repeat with many other types of apps. For example, Facebook doesn’t offer a tablet-optimized interface, but it’s okay on a Nexus 7 anyway. On a 10-inch screen, it probably wouldn’t be anywhere near as nice an experience. It goes without saying that Facebook and Twitter both offer iPad apps with interfaces designed for a tablet-size screen. Here’s another problematic app — the official Yelp app for Android. Even just using it on a 7-inch Nexus 7 will be a poor experience, while it would be much worse on a larger 10-inch tablet app. Now, it’s true that many — maybe even most — of the popular apps you might want to run today are optimized for Android tablets. But, when you look at the situation when it comes to popular apps like Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp, it’s clear Android is still behind in a meaningful way. Price Let’s be honest. The thing that really makes Android tablets compelling — and the only reason Android tablets started seeing real traction after years of almost complete dominance by Apple’s iPads — is that Android tablets are available for so much cheaper than iPads. Google’s latest Nexus 7 (2013) is available for only $230. Apple’s non-retina iPad Mini is available at $300, which is already $70 more. In spite of that, the iPad Mini has much older, slower internals and a much lower resolution screen. It’s not as nice to look at when it comes to reading or watching movies, and the iPad Mini reportedly struggles to run Apple’s latest iOS 7. In contrast, the new Nexus 7 has a very high resolution screen, speedy internals, and runs Android very well with little-to-no lag in real use. We haven’t had any problems with it, unlike all the problems we unfortunately encountered with the first Nexus 7. For a really comparable experience to the current Nexus 7, you’d want to get one of Apple’s new retina iPad Minis. That would cost you $400, another $170 over the Nexus 7. In fact, it’s possible to regularly find sales on the Nexus 7, so if you waited you could get it for just $200 — half the price of the iPad mini with a comparable screen and internals. (In fairness, the iPad certainly has better hardware — but you won’t feel if it you’re just using your tablet to browse the web, watch videos, and do other typical tablet things.) This makes a tablet like the popular Nexus 7 a very good option for budget-conscious users who just want a high-quality device they can use to browse the web, watch videos, play games, and generally do light computing. There’s a reason we’re focusing on the Nexus 7 here. The combination of price and size brings it to a very good place. It’s awfully cheap for the high-quality experience you get, and the 7-inch screen means that even the non-tablet-optimized apps you may stumble across will often work fairly well. On the other hand, more expensive 10-inch Android tablets are still a tougher sell. For $400-$500, you’re getting awfully close to Apple’s full-size iPad price range and Android tablets don’t have as good an app ecosystem as an iPad. It’s hard to recommend an expensive, 10-inch Android tablet over a full-size iPad to average users. In summary, the Android app tablet app situation is nowhere near as bad as it was a few years ago. The success of the Nexus 7 proves that Android tablets can be compelling experiences, and there are a wide variety of strong apps. That said, more expensive 10-inch Android tablets that compete directly with the full-size iPad on price still don’t make much sense for most people.  Unless you have a specific reason for preferring an Android tablet, it’s tough not to recommend an iPad if you’re looking at spending $400+ on a 10-inch tablet. • Is there a name for a testing method where you compare a set of very different designs?

  "A/B testing" is defined as "a method of marketing testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to improve response rates". The point here, of course, is to know which small single-variable changes are more optimal, with the goal of finding the local optimum. However, one can also envision a somewhat related but different scenario for testing the response rate of major re-designs: take a baseline control design, take one or more completely different designs, and run test samples on those redesigns to compare response rates. As a practical but contrived example, imagine testing a set of designs for the same website, one being minimalist "googly" design, one being cluttered "Amazony" design, and one being an artsy "designy" design (e.g. maximum use of design elements unlike Google but minimal simultaneously presented information, like Google but unlike Amazon) Is there an official name for such testing? It's definitely not A/B testing, since the main component of it (finding local optimum by testing single-variable small changes that can be attributed to response shift) is not present. This is more about trying to compare a set of local optimums, and compare to see which one works better as a global optimum. It's not a multivriable, A/B/N or any other such testing since you don't really have specific variables that can be attributed, just different designs.

• Should I avoid SharePoint Development in Visual Studio?

  Not long ago I started an internship at a company that supplies SharePoint consultancy, hosting and development. While their consultancy seems to be pretty good and solid, I feel their development department lacks direction. The reason for this, most likely, is that they stopped outsourcing not too long ago. One thing that I've frequently bumped my head into is the following: My supervisor strongly insists that everything that can be done natively in SharePoint (somehow this includes editing xslt files in Designer) should be done in SharePoint. Even if this results in longer development time (at least when they make me write XSLT) and reduced usability. Her main arguments for this are: Better maintainability Editing the functionality doesn't require programming knowledge I feel the company is a little biassed and I am unable to get a decent discussion going. This is why I am looking for other places to get some responses on the subject (and not only on the arguments of my supervisor, but more on the subject in general). Kind regards

  Should I reuse variables? I know that many best practice say you should not do it, however later when different developer is debugging the code and have 3 variables that look a like and only difference is that they are created in different places in the code he might be confused. unit-testing is a great example of this. However I do know that best practice are most of the time against it. For example they say not to "overide" method parameters. Best practice are even are against nulling the previous variables (in Java there is Sonar that has warning when you assign null to variable that you don't need to do it to call garbage collector since Java6. you cant always control what warnings are turned off, most of the time the default is on)

  While certain classes like java.lang.Integer and java.lang.Math have been in the platform since the beginning, that doesn't mean there aren't more enhancements to be made in such places! For example, earlier in JDK 8, library support was added for unsigned integer arithmetic. More recently, my colleague Roger Riggs pushed a changeset to support integer overflow, that is, to provide methods which throw an ArithmeticException on overflow instead of returning a wrapped result. Besides being helpful for various programming tasks in Java, methods like the those for integer overflow can be used to implement runtimes supporting other languages, as has been requested at a past JVM language summit. This year's language summit is coming up in July and I hope to get some additional suggestions there for helpful library additions as part of the general discussions of the JVM and Java libraries as a platform.

  This seems to be discussed in many places. But I don't get it or it does not work for me. So let me explain. I use Firefox 24.0 on Lubuntu 12.04. In privacy settings, I have selected 1. Use custom settings for history 2. accept cookies from sites 3. never accept third party cookies. But then when I check (e.g. in show cookies in firefox preferences or in lightbeam), it still shows me many third party cookies (e.g. google.com, facebook, etc.). What additional steps I have to take to block them?
