• Trouble with Ubuntu 12.10 install/evaluation

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 onto my Compaq Presario SR1215CL. I downloaded ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso file using BitTorrent and burned it to a blank DVD-RW. When I boot the computer with the Live Disk in the disk tray I am able to get to the Welcome screen. If I click on "Try Ubuntu" I am left at a blank screen except for the desktop background. There are no menus, toolbars, icons, etc. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at this stage I am able to log out of the Live Session, but am unable to log back in. If I click on "Install Ubuntu" instead, I am able to proceed fairly far into the installation process, but eventually it quits and drops me to the same blank screen as above. I'm not sure at which stage the installer quits, but it does ask me to identify the issue and solve the problem myself from inside the Live Session, which doesn't work. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed and working?

• Somes importants shorcuts of Blender does not work on Ubuntu

  In Ubuntu (and Mint) some important shortcuts for Blender does not work. Alt + right click to select an edge loop (heavily used on all 3D softwares) doesn't work, a useless menu of Ubuntu pop up to ask if the application must be closed or minimize. Ctrl + Alt + 0 to define the current view as the view of the camera minimize the application. This shortcut of Ubuntu is useless, it's faster to click on the minimize icon. Ctrl + number to apply a subdivision surface level do nothing on Blender, it's one of the most used shortcut of Blender. For the moment I stay on Windows 7 just to use these 3 shortcuts.

• How to install programs downloaded from the internet?

  I've downloadad the latest XAMPP file, to install it into Ubuntu 13.04. After downloading the file, I just can run it. I've double click it (and I've tried right click and clicking "open", whith the same result). All the answer I get is this message: Could not display “xampp-linux-1.8.3-1-installer.run”. There is no application installed for “executable” files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file? I've tried searching for an application, with no result... Also, I haven't found any questions related to this issue with the 13.04 Unity version... I've tried this solution, with no result. Please note that this isn't a Xampp question, the same happened to me when I tried to install Skype. UPDATE: I've tried this solution: cd ~/Downloads chmod +x myfile.run sudo sh myfile.run And I've got this error: Syntax error: "(" unexpected What should I do? Thanks!

  Noob here. OK, I 1 Open the Dash. 2 Type "file". An app appears, called "files", icon looks like ta 2-drawer file cabinet. I click that, the app opens 3: I click the "Search button". I type the file name in the box and hit Enter. 4: The program thinks for a while, then displays a result. Great! the program found the file I was ilooking for! IT knows where myfile.foo is, BUT I DON'T! IT DOESN'T F%*%#ING SAY WHERE IT IS!!!! How do I find out where it is, please? I hate to say this, but is there an app that works like Windows Explorer (but doesn't crash every 2 minutes)?

• YELP does not work right

  When I click on DashHome then click on the questionmark, It brings up the help system. However when I enter a command to search on it tells me this does not exist. From what I understand the engine is YELP and is suppose to search everything including the man pages. However, I can't get it to find anything. I tried to install the yelp package but it tells me the one that is installed is the latest version. Am I doing something wrong? Everything I read says hitting the F1 key is suppose to bring up yelp but Thanks in advance. Dave

• Small auto scrolling window

  I'd like to apply a global site-wide little javascript window on the very bottom right of the site that will display a window about 40 x 80 wide, just a book icon and the word "Bible", where when a person clicks it, it will open a pop-up window, centered and pull whatever page I give it to display the bible itself (I have it internally already). These little javascript windows auto scroll as you scroll up or down the pages, you've seen them many times. PS: I also want a "hide" option, but it doesn't hide it but minimizes it down to a small icon, all the way to the very bottom right of the site. So, click it opens, click it minimizes. Problem is, I don't know the name of this type of script :) Your help appreciated. Thanks.

• Add Matlab to main menu

  I was trying to add the installed matlab to the menu of Applications under Ubuntu 10.10. I clicked System-Preference-Main Menu - Programming - New Item, where I input the Matlab file .../MatlabR2010b/bin/matlab as the command, and selected the type to be "Application". Then I finished. But when i click the item in the menu of Applications, the Matlab icon shows up a few seconds and then nothing else happens. If I select the type to be "Application in Terminal" in the last step of adding Matlab to the menu of Applications, then when I click the item in the menu of Applications, there will be firstly a terminal window and then the Matlab command window. So I was wondering how to solve the problem of Matlab not starting when the type has been selected to be "Application"? Also is there a way to eliminate the terminal appearing when the type has been selected to be "Application in Terminal"? Thanks!

• How to automatically generate html table from image in Linux?

  In Photoshop, you can easily devide the image into zones using point and click and it automatically generates the corresponding html with image slices addressed in tables. Gimp also has a Slice (Filter Web Slice) but it is so rudimentary and, as far as I can see, does not allow point and click selection of slices. I am wondering if the functionality can be added into Gimp, or there are other Linux software to do this. I hate to return to Windows jut to do this simple task which I happen to use frequently. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

  I'm working on an old vb6/access2003 app which is used to handle orders, bills of materials and that sort of things. I'm thinking about creating a form that I call every time the users needs to search for something. This should work like these: Click on the field to complete, let's say name of a buyer Open new form, search for the client and click on it Return the name of the buyer to the previous form (probably the header of the order) So, I would need to pass to the new form something that identify the type of search I have to do (so what access table to open) and return some values. Is my idea correct or there something better? I would like to use only one form for all the searches, now the app works with a lot of msflexgrid for every form.

• How can I fix indicator's behaviour?

  I recently switched to Ubuntu 11.10 from Windows. The panel has been acting really weird lately. What happens is when I click on sound icon to change volume, the menu for Bluetooth connectivity pops up. When I try to hover over the popped up menu, the latter disappears the moment I move my mouse. It is just not one icon that has been troubling me. When I click on network icon in the panel, it pops-up the menu for Chat and then the popped-up Chat menu just disappears as soon as there is a movement of the mouse. I hope I was able to explain my situation. I am sure you must be aware of this issue. Please advise. Thanks.

• box2d and constant movement

  i'm developing a game with a top down view, the players body is a circle. To move the character you need to tap on the screen and it moves to the spot. To achieve this i'm saving the coordinate of the touch and call a method every frame which applies linear velocity to the body with a vector of the direction the body should go _body->SetLinearVelocity(b2Vec2((a.x - currPos.x)/SPEED_RATIO,(size.height - a.y - currPos.y)/SPEED_RATIO)); //click position - current position, screen height - click position (since the y axis is flipped, (0,0) is in the bottom left ) - current position = vector of the direction we want to go now the problem with this is that the body slows down until it finally stops when getting closer to the point we want it to go, since the closer we are to that point the lenght of the vector gets smaller. Besides that i've read that it's bad practice to set linear velocity in box2d and i should use apply force instead, but that way the forces would add up and overshoot the target where it's supposed to stop. So what i'm asking is how to move a box2d body to a coordinate in constant speed.

• Ubuntu installation always restarts

  I downloaded ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso and mounted it to USB. I restart my laptop, select Install Linux and select language, then it says I have no internet, I press "Continue", and then I click "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 8" and click "Continue", the computer just restarts and I see the again the same Try-Ubuntu-or-install-it menu. And hence I cannot install Ubuntu. I check md5 hash for iso and it's correct. Thanks for any help. P.S. I couldn't find answer anywhere else.

• How do you create links with a NULL or # in Drupal?

  Trying to create folders for links where the parent has no content, it's just a folder. Need to be able to insert #, but Drupal is saying it's not a link. Just want the user to click it and nothing happen, the child of that menu item will already be being displayed without a click. Version: Drupal 6 (appears worked in D5) I've attempted the following: '', #, <#>, empty, <empty>, null, <null>, blank, <blank>, <none>, none, <answer> ...just kidding. The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #16) What is it? Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/. Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not. How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. An example screenshot is located below: Results from Chrome 7 Results from Internet Explorer 8 (With Silverlight Disabled) Tip/Trick #17) What is it? Use Lambdas whenever you can. Why do I care?  It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax. Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • Error after installing Ubuntu 12.04 using Wubi

  After using Windows Ubuntu Installer from within Windows, I am prompted to restart, so I follow the directions. When I try to start Ubuntu after restarting, the desktop background appears, but then a loading bar with this title appears. Verifying the installation configuration... While this is loading, an error window pops up that says No root file system is defined Please correct this from the partitioning menu There is only an 'Ok' button available to click, and if I click that the same error window appears. I do not know how to get to the "partitioning menu" from this state, so the only option I have is to shut down my computer. What can I do so that Ubuntu finds a "root file system"? Can I diagnose this problem via Windows? Does anyone have any insight? FYI - I am using a new ultrabook with 6GB RAM, Intel i7 3rd gen processor, and no CD/DVD drive.

  I was wondering if there is anyway you can block or exclude people from submitting multiple fake ip's online . For example I have a google pay-per-click campaign set up on adwords. I downloaded a program in minutes which enabled me to hide or give out a fake ip address which also allows you to use a different ip each time. I tried this out on my own link on google which in turn got through adwords and I was charged for the click. My question is how would you be able to counter or block someone who continuosly clicks on your link with a different fake ip each time?

• Unity freezes when laptop screen is closed

  I have an Asus laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. It's configured to do nothing when the laptop screen is closed. But sometimes, when I close the screen and when I reopen it, after I move the mouse to reactivate the screen, my Unity interface is frozen and I can't click on anything. I can move the cursor, and if there's a music playing it keeps playing, but I can't click on anything. I can open a bash shell typing Ctrl+Alt+F2, but there I don't know what to do, I can only login and type sudo reboot to reboot the machine... Is there someone that has the same problem or that knows the solution?

  I try to add .pls radio station to rhythmbox. I download the file and I click musicimport file but nothing happen. I added one station before and it works fine but now it simply does not work. Also when I try to get from the file, click on open with rhythmbox I have the error: Couldn't start playback Problem occurred without error being set. This is a bug in Rhythmbox or GStreamer. I have all medibuntu installed and I have one radio station already playing. I don't know how to proceed from now and what should I check if there is something to fix. Anyone get similar problem? (Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit Gnome3)

• Google Analytics - how to track clicks on a screen?

  Can I track the click of every link, button, dropdown select, etc. on a screen and have it be tracked in Google Analytics? I want to create a page and collect data on which widget the users use most. What about AJAX stuff? What if you're using jQuery or Mootools...can you get the functions to register a fake URL with GA based on user interaction? I use to do this with Flash. Everytime you click a button, it can initiate a fake URL request. I would make urls such as ".../customize/eyes/" or ".../customize/nose", etc. Just wondering if I can do that with Javascript on the page. I've also posted at StackOverflow.

  I have Deepin linux installed and now I need to install ubuntu. I don't have CD ROM , so I thought I can use GRUB2 ISO boot option. I have used the link Install Ubuntu from iso file using grub2 to boot ISO using GRUB2. I need to install the operating system. When I click Install Ubuntu icon in desktop, the installer starts. But I can't see the option where we can specify the partition. It just directly goes to installing. Even if I click install, the installer does nothing and the installation didn't start. What to do? Any ideas?

• 12.10 nautilus on dell xps 12 does not work

  I have installed 12.10 on a new Dell XPS 12 ultrabook. Everything seems to work properly right now, including the touch screen, except for nautilus. The left pane works properly, I can select an item on the left and the contents will show up on the right, but when I go to do anything with the contents on the right nothing happens, I can't double click to open, I can't right click to bring up a menu. I can however hold down the left button and to draw a box to select more than one item, but I can't do anything with the selected items. I did not have these problems when I tried 12.04, but unfortunately the touchscreen does not work out of the box on 12.04 and 12.10 seemed to be the faster way go. Any ideas? How can I log what is happening when I try to do anything in nautilus?

• Ubuntu 13.10 Installer freezes on partition recognition on Alienware M17x

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 on an Alienware M17x, after bypassing the graphical problems with "nomodeset" (annoying!), I'm facing a rather different problem: I click on "Install Ubuntu", the guided installation progress reach the point where the partition, mount point etc. needs to be selected and...nothing. In the partition selection menu it sees only dev/sda, but in the window where the actual way the disk is partitioned should appear nothing shows, it's blank. I've tried to click on "change..." to try to force it to read something, but the installer simply quits. The button "change partition table" etcetera are greyed out (well, obviously, since no partition table has been read). What's that? The Alienware has Windows 7 and legacy BIOS (so no UEFI here). Anyone has an idea? Thanks for your time and help!
