• Periodic clicking sound from PC speaker

  After an update some months ago, my laptop has begun making a low, repeated clicking sound every few seconds. It is not being generated through the regular sound system, as altering the volume and even muting the sound does not make any difference. My regular audio works fine, by the way, so I am guessing this is some sort of PC speaker, since I cannot hear the click when I listen through regular headphones. Strangely, when I open the sound settings dialog the click magically disappears. I don't need to change any settings; if I simply leave the dialog open in the background then the problem disappears. Any ideas what this could be? • Memory read/write access efficiency

  I've heard conflicting information from different sources, and I'm not really sure which one to believe. As such, I'll post what I understand and ask for corrections. Let's say I want to use a 2D matrix. There are three ways that I can do this (at least that I know of). 1: int i; char **matrix; matrix = malloc(50 * sizeof(char *)); for(i = 0; i < 50; i++) matrix[i] = malloc(50); 2: int i; int rowSize = 50; int pointerSize = 50 * sizeof(char *); int dataSize = 50 * 50; char **matrix; matrix = malloc(dataSize + pointerSize); char *pData = matrix + pointerSize - rowSize; for(i = 0; i < 50; i++) { pData += rowSize; matrix[i] = pData; } 3: //instead of accessing matrix[i][j] here, we would access matrix[i * 50 + j] char *matrix = malloc(50 * 50); In terms of memory usage, my understanding is that 3 is the most efficient, 2 is next, and 1 is least efficient, for the reasons below: 3: There is only one pointer and one allocation, and therefore, minimal overhead. 2: Once again, there is only one allocation, but there are now 51 pointers. This means there is 50 * sizeof(char *) more overhead. 1: There are 51 allocations and 51 pointers, causing the most overhead of all options. In terms of performance, once again my understanding is that 3 is the most efficient, 2 is next, and 1 is least efficient. Reasons being: 3: Only one memory access is needed. We will have to do a multiplication and an addition as opposed to two additions (as in the case of a pointer to a pointer), but memory access is slow enough that this doesn't matter. 2: We need two memory accesses; once to get a char *, and then to the appropriate char. Only two additions are performed here (once to get to the correct char * pointer from the original memory location, and once to get to the correct char variable from wherever the char * points to), so multiplication (which is slower than addition) is not required. However, on modern CPUs, multiplication is faster than memory access, so this point is moot. 1: Same issues as 2, but now the memory isn't contiguous. This causes cache misses and extra page table lookups, making it the least efficient of the lot. First and foremost: Is this correct? Second: Is there an option 4 that I am missing that would be even more efficient?

• Does dist-upgrade require PPA software to be uninstalled first?

  Hi all, I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 with quite a few PPAs. Amongst the PPAs there is Guiodic (Guido Iodice) Lucid quasi-rolling :) PPA which brings most recent versions of many programs to my desktop. My steps: sudo update-manager -d click on upgrade on the appearing window wait for the magic to happen: prepare to upgrade and setting new software channels during 'calculating the changes' I will get the following error message in the panel An error occurred, please run Package Manager form the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Marking the upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolver generated breaks, this may be caused by help packages.)'This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies When I check Synaptic/apt-get I can't find any errors or hint toward broken packages Could this error be because of many PPA versions being newer than 10.04 original versions?

  I have read the Google page event documentation, but I am not sure I understand it correctly. I am new to Google analytics, and I have two questions: Once I have google analytics enabled for my site (i.e. I have inserted the tracking code in my pages etc), do I need to set anything else up (at the Google end - i.e. in my Google analytics account) It is not clear to me how the event data particularly, relating to how the data can be aggregated and analyzed. For instance, if I want to track an event under category category for click action action, I will use the following code snippet: <a href="some-uri.htm" onclick="_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'category', 'action', 'label']);">Do Something</a> For the sake of simplicity, lets say I am interested in monitoring click events in my header and footer, and I want to find which pages the header and or footer is clicked most often. How would I set things up so that I can analyze the header/footer clicks aggregated at the page level?

• How to discriminate from two nodes with identical frequencies in a Huffman's tree?

  Still on my quest to compress/decompress files with a Java implementation of Huffman's coding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_coding) for a school assignment. From the Wikipedia page, I quote: Create a leaf node for each symbol and add it to the priority queue. While there is more than one node in the queue: Remove the two nodes of highest priority (lowest probability) from the queue Create a new internal node with these two nodes as children and with probability equal to the sum of the two nodes' probabilities. Add the new node to the queue. The remaining node is the root node and the tree is complete. Now, emphasis: Remove the two nodes of highest priority (lowest probability) from the queue Create a new internal node with these two nodes as children and with probability equal to the sum of the two nodes' probabilities. So I have to take two nodes with the lowest frequency. What if there are multiple nodes with the same low frequency? How do I discriminate which one to use? The reason I ask this is because Wikipedia has this image: And I wanted to see if my Huffman's tree was the same. I created a file with the following content: aaaaeeee nnttmmiihhssfffouxprl And this was the result: Doesn't look so bad. But there clearly are some differences when multiple nodes have the same frequency. My questions are the following: What is Wikipedia's image doing to discriminate the nodes with the same frequency? Is my tree wrong? (Is Wikipedia's image method the one and only answer?) I guess there is one specific and strict way to do this, because for our school assignment, files that have been compressed by my program should be able to be decompressed by other classmate's programs - so there must be a "standard" or "unique" way to do it. But I'm a bit lost with that. My code is rather straightforward. It literally just follows Wikipedia's listed steps. The way my code extracts the two nodes with the lowest frequency from the queue is to iterate all nodes and if the current node has a lower frequency than any of the two "smallest" known nodes so far, then it replaces the highest one. Just like that.

• Writing selenium tests, should I just get it done or get it right?

  I'm attempting to drive my user interface (heavy on javascript) through selenium. I've already tested the rest of my ajax interaction with selenium successfully. However, this one particular method seems to be eluding me because I can't seem to fake the correct click event. I could solve this problem by simply waiting in the test for the user to click a point and then continuing with the test but this seems like a cop out. But I'm really running out of time on my deadline to have this done and working. Should I just get this done and move on or should I spend the extra (unknown) amount of time to fix this problem and be able to have my selenium tests 100% automated?

• Blender to 3ds max to cal3d format

  There are quite a few questions on cal3d but they are old and don't apply anymore. In Blender(must be 2.49a for python script to work!!!): I have a scene with 7 meshes, 1 armature, 10 bones. I tried going to one mesh to simplify it but doesn't change anything. I found a small blend file that was used for cal3d and it exported just fine. So I tried to copy it's setup with no success. EDIT*8/13/2012 In the last week here is what I have found so far. I made the mesh in the newest blender(2.62?) and exported it to import it in the old one(2.49a). Did an animation in the old one because importing new blend files to old blenders, its just said it would lose keyframe data and all was good. And then you get the last problem of it not exporting meshes. BUT I found that meshes made in the old one export regardless. I can't find any that won't export. So if I used the old blender to remake my model I could get it to export :) At this point I found a modified release of cal3d (because the most core model variable would not initiate as I made a really small test subject in old blender instead of remaking my big one which took 4 hours.) which fixes the morph objects and adds what cal3d left off with. Under their license they have to release the modification but it has no documentation so I have to figure it out on my own. Its mostly the same. But with this lib it came with a 3ds max exporter. My question now is how do I transfer armature and mesh information from blender to 3ds max in order to export into cal3d format. Every time I try the models are see through and small and there are no bones. The formats I have tried to import are .3ds .obj(mesh only) and COLLADA. In all of them the mesh is invisible and no bones. It says the default texture is on so I should be able to see it. All the vertices are present I found a vertex highlighter so I can see those. If any of this is confusing let me know so I can clear it up. Its late .<=sleep.

• do you still get a bounce in google analytics if all the linked pages/content is loaded dyanmicly?

  Google analytics describes a bounce as a user that visits and leaves before after their first page. But if your site is a one page site, with content loaded dynamicly using javascript you could have a user one your site go through loads of info, text images but would that still count as a bounce ? Or once they click on an a-tag even if it is <a href="#"> can google analytics see that ? (im aware of click tracking in analytics) but i was wandering if google picks up these clicks by default..

• Firefox: middle mouse button stopped working

  In Firefox, middle mouse button/wheel has been assigned "Open link in new tab" action for a while now, by default. Since I ran Software Update tonight, this action doesn't work in Firefox anymore. To be specific, middle mouse click doesn't open links anymore. At the same time, it closes tabs just fine (middle-click a tab == 'Close tab'). I don't know the update details, but I remember that Firefox update was there among other things. I tried running Firefox with a clean profile and middle button did work there, so something must've changed with existing settings.

• Several New Hints

  Hi all! Today we would like to introduce you some of our new experimental hints for NetBeans 7.2. They are called: Unused Use Statement and Immutable Variables. Unused Use Statement This hint is quite simple. It highlights (underlines) your use statements, which are not used. Typical use case is after some refactoring, when you forgot to remove some obsolete use statements. This hint warns you on them and allows you to remove them easily. Just click on the hint bulb in the gutter and select Remove Unused Use Statement. And of course, it works in multiple use statements combined too. Immutable Variables The next one is the hint which checks too many assignments into a variable. And why? That's simple. Mostly you should use just one assignment into one variable. But sometimes you are lazy and you do something like: But it's quite wrong, because what you really do is: And that's exactly the case, when our new hint warns you, that Too many assignments (2) into variable $foo occured. Nothing more. Yes, we know that there are some cases, where could be more assignments and no warning should occur, e.g.: Because maybe one likes longer increment syntax more than the short one. So we tried to handle these cases to don't bother you if it's not a need. Note: We are almost sure that this hint doesn't cover all your use cases, because there are a lot of them. So if you find something strange, write it into our bugzilla so we can handle it better for you. Thanks for your patience! And the last thing is, that you can set the number of allowed assignments in Tools -> Options -> Editor -> Hints -> PHP: Immutable Variables. Note: This hint works just for a common variables, not for fields. We have an enhancement request for that and it should be implemented in next version of NetBeans (probably 7.3). • Why is this by passing the SUDO password?

  I have a bash script I am using to automate a SVN checkout. The contents of the file were: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ Then when I double click the file it would ask me what to do, I would click the button "Run In Terminal" and then a terminal would pop up and ask me for the SUDO password. I would enter it, the script would execute and the terminal would close. I wanted to give some sort of indication that the script ran successfully so I edited my file to look like: #!/bin/bash cd /var/www-cake sudo svn checkout file:///usr/local/svn/bash_repo/repo/ echo "Head revision has been pushed to live server" I expected the terminal to now stay open and tell me the message afterwards. To my surprise it now opens and immediately closes. The script does execute and I no longer have to put in the SUDO password. Is this right? I do not understand why this is happening, seems like a security issue.

• Move the location of the XYZ pivot point on a mesh in UDK

  When working with any mesh, you get an XYZ point somewhere on it. If you just want to move the mesh in any direction, it doesn't matter where this point is located. However, I want to rotate a door. This requires the point of rotation to be very specific. I can't find anywhere how to change the location of the point. Can anyone help? EDIT: solved, to change the pivot point, right click on the mesh, go to "Pivot" and move it. Then right click again and this time select "Save PrePivot to Pivot"

• Upgrade Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.10

  To whoever can help, I want to update the ubuntu on my laptop to 12.10 from the current version 11.10, when i click on the update manager i get a partial update gui, if i click cancel on that i get the gui for update which has three buttons check, install updates and upgrade. • Indefinite loops where the first time is different

  This isn't a serious problem or anything someone has asked me to do, just a seemingly simple thing that I came up with as a mental exercise but has stumped me and which I feel that I should know the answer to already. There may be a duplicate but I didn't manage to find one. Suppose that someone asked you to write a piece of code that asks the user to enter a number and, every time the number they entered is not zero, says "Error" and asks again. When they enter zero it stops. In other words, the code keeps asking for a number and repeats until zero is entered. In each iteration except the first one it also prints "Error". The simplest way I can think of to do that would be something like the folloing pseudocode: int number = 0; do { if(number != 0) { print("Error"); } print("Enter number"); number = getInput(); }while(number != 0); While that does what it's supposed to, I personally don't like that there's repeating code (you test number != 0 twice) -something that should generally be avoided. One way to avoid this would be something like this: int number = 0; while(true) { print("Enter number"); number = getInput(); if(number == 0) { break; } else { print("Error"); } } But what I don't like in this one is "while(true)", another thing to avoid. The only other way I can think of includes one more thing to avoid: labels and gotos: int number = 0; goto question; error: print("Error"); question: print("Enter number"); number = getInput(); if(number != 0) { goto error; } Another solution would be to have an extra variable to test whether you should say "Error" or not but this is wasted memory. Is there a way to do this without doing something that's generally thought of as a bad practice (repeating code, a theoretically endless loop or the use of goto)? I understand that something like this would never be complex enough that the first way would be a problem (you'd generally call a function to validate input) but I'm curious to know if there's a way I haven't thought of.

• Bluetooth mouse lag on high cpu load ubuntu 11.04 12.10

  I have just migrate to Ubuntu 12.10 and I have noticed that I have huge problem with my bluetooth mouse left click button on a high load (wired, but scroll and right button are not affected) (I think powersave cpu mode affect that more than cpu load) It just not "trigger the interrupt". Mouse is laggy, click are not reggisterd. I can not work like that. At the same time, my touchpad and usb mouse works great. How to check that - limit cpu frequency (I use powersave and ondemend mode) I now wonder, what should I log, check, measure, to capture enough data to fill bug report. • netflix on ubuntu 12.04

  So I have got Ubuntu 12.04 on a system 76 lemur ultra laptop. I installed netflix via terminal with the following chain of commands: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ehoover/compholio sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install netflix-desktop when it was finished installing, I clicked the icon and something came up asking if you want to install some dependent software, but wouldn't let me interact with the window - so I hit tab and worked my way through that. But my computer shutdown before I could fully install GECKO. Now I have the netflix icon, but when i click it or right click it nothing happens. I had tried uninstalling it with the following commands, sudo apt-add --purge remove netflix-desktop and then reinstalling it but there's no change. does anyone know what I can do to get netflix to run from here? or what I can do to start troubleshooting? I searched around on AskUbuntu but couldn't find any answers to this specific problem.

• Simple alternating text in Visual Basic 2008

  I have a simple completed program, but i would like to add one more feature to it but I'm not sure how. I have it set up to send a message automatically every 7 seconds when a text field is selected, repeating the message of course. What I would like for it to do is alternate between two separate messages, instead just repeating the one. I would like the new program to post at an interval of 12 seconds. Can you help me? • "A hard disk may be failing" , but no additional info via gdu-notification-deamon (suggestions?)

  Got this message after logging in: A hard disk may be failing One or more hard disk report health problems. Click the icon to get more information. On WUBI and 10.04, there was no icon to click, and clicking on made the message go away. After rebooting, the message did not display again. I've got everything on all my hard drives in duplicate, so not super worried about a disk failure, though I am wondering why the message had no info on which disk it thought had problems. Suggestions?
