• Application/Server dependency mapping

  I'm just curious as to whether such as tool exists (free, open source, or commercial but for a reasonable price) before I build it myself. We're looking for a simple solution to simplify taking web apps online and offline when a server is undergoing maintenance. The idea is that we be able to mark a server as unavailable, and then mark all dependent (direct and indirect) as offline. Our first proof-of-concept is running, and we created an aspx page that lists various applications that have an App_Offline.html file with a friendly "Down for Maintenance" message in a GridView. In the GridView, each app has a LinkButton that, when clicked, either renames the App_Offline.htm to App_Offline.html or vice-versa to take the app online and offline. The next step is to set up all of our dependencies. For example, our store locater would be dependent on our web services, which in turn are dependent on our SQL Server. (that's a simple example. We can easily have several layers, or one app dependent on multiple servers, etc.) In this example, if the SQL server goes down, we would need to drill down recursively to find all apps that depend on it, and then turn them off and on by renaming the App_Offline file appropriately. I realize this will be relatively simple to build, but could be complex to manage. I'm sure we're not the first team to think of this concept, and I'm wondering if there are any open source tools, or if any of you have done something similar and can help us avoid pitfalls. Edit - Update I found the category of software I'm looking for. it's called CMDB - (Configuration Management Database), and it's generally more of a Network Admin type tool than a developer tool. I found some open source products in this category, but none written in .NET. I had considered moving this question to ServerFault.com when I realized I was looking for a netowrk Admin type tool, but since I'm looking for code and a modifiable solution I'll keep the question here.

• HTML5 video (mp4 and ogv) problems in Safari and Firefox - but Chrome is all good

  Hi folks, I have the following code: <video width="640" height="360" controls id="video-player" poster="/movies/poster.png"> <source src="/movies/640x360.m4v" type='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2"'> <source src="/movies/640x360.ogv" type='video/ogg; codecs="theora, vorbis"'> </video> I'm using Rails (Mongrel in development and Mongrel+Apache in production). Chrome (Mac and Win) can play either file (tested by one then the other source tags) whether locally or from my production servers. Safari (Mac and Win) can play the mp4 file fine locally but not from production. Firefox 3.6 won't play the video in either OS. I just get a grey cross in the middle of the video player area. I've made sure that both Mongrel and Apache in each case have the right MIME types set. From Chrome's results I know there is nothing inherently wrong with my video files or the way the files are being asked for or delivered. Anyone got any clues? Or even a clue as to how to diagnose the problem? For Firefox I looked at https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Using_audio_and_video_in_Firefox where it refers to an 'error' event and an 'error' attribute. It seems the 'error' event is thrown pretty well straightaway and at that time there is no error attribute. Very helpful... :( Help enormously appreciated! Thanks in advance... Chris

• .Net opening and clossing database connections

  I currently designed the data access portion of our framework so that every time a business object needed to interact with the database it would have to open a connection, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query), and then close the connection. Then if it needed to run in a transaction it would open the connection, begin the transaction, invoke the data access layer (to execute the query) and then commit the transaction, close the transaction, and finally close the connection. I did it this way with the mindset of open late and close early...but what if I needed to call other BO's to submit data in a single transaction? Is there a better way to handle opening and closing connections as well as working with transactions? I'm a rookie at architecting applications so I hope I'm not doing this wrong...any help is appreciated.

  i've just solved the blue screen problem after "preparing your desktop" on windows 2008 server with your help (http://serverfault.com/questions/410570/server-2008-blue-screen-after-login-no-desktop) but unfortuneletly for me i did many things before that through gpedit.msc specifically to restrict user access to windows programs, control panel, regedit, msconfig ... but when i finally can log on even with administrator i cant open anything at all... and the message at title always came up.. please help me i cant open anything, regedit, mmc, any administrative tools ....

  I am completely a newbie in continuous integration but I am trying to learn it. Here is my set up. I have a main production location. Computer A. I have a virtual machine hosting Windows Server 2008 OS which have Cruise Control.NET installed and running. Computer B I use Mercurial as my source control tool installed in Computer A. Everything is configured and I can see Cruise Control report on my Computer B Web server and I can me my repository on Computer A Web server. The problem is the following : From my Computer B's Cruise Control console I have the following error : Source control failure : Unable to execute file [c:\develop\CCnet\WorkingDir\hg]. The file may not exist or may not be executable. File not found 'C:\develop\CCnet\CCnetrtifacts\msbuils-results.xml.   I am wanting to write a WCF web service that can send files over the wire to the client. So I have one setup that sends a Stream response.   Hi All, Here I am trying to assign the datasource (using same code given in the sample application) and create a graph, only difference is i am doing it in WPF WindowsFormsHost. due to some reason the datasource is not being assigned properly and i am not able to see the series ("Series 1") being created. wired thing is that it is working in the Windows Forms application but not in the WPF one. am i missing something and can somebody help me?   I'm doing a Sphinx search but turning up some really weird results. Any help is appreciated. So for example if I type "50", I get: 50 Cent 50 Lions 50 Foot Wave, etc. This is great, but when I search "50 Ce", I get: Ryczace Dwudziestki Spisek Bernhard Gal Cowabunga Go-Go And other crazy results. • Javadoc through Ant task with {@inheritDoc} from J2SE classes

  I generate documentation for a project using an Ant task. In several places, I wanted to inherit documentation from the standard classes, so I used {@inheritDoc} which allowed me to see the Javadoc in Eclipse, but it wouldn't show up in the HTML files. The problem was that I hadn't included the unzipped src.zip (J2SE source) in the sourcepath. Having fixed that, I now get several hundred warnings about the use of Sun proprietary API in files like lib/jdk-src/java/lang/Class.java. Is there any way to suppress these warnings? It's hard to find relevant problems in this mess. A possible solution I thought of was to run the Javadoc task once without including the J2SE source in the sourcepath, which will reveal any real issues. Then I can run Javadoc a second time with the J2SE source included, discarding the output altogether, which will produce documentation with properly-working {@inheritDoc}s. I'm not entirely sure about the best way to accomplish this in Ant, not to mention that running Javadoc twice would be a dirty fix. Any suggestions?

  I need some advice on NHibernate Session Management for a C# WinForms application. I am currently porting an application to use NHibernate. I am also employing a UnitOfWork pattern as described in the link below; http://nhforge.org/wikis/patternsandpractices/nhibernate-and-the-unit-of-work-pattern.aspx My question relates to Sessions. Can you only have one session running per thread at all times? I have a scenario in which a Session (UnitOfWork) may be open for a form shown by the application but the user opens another form (i.e. Tools - Options) which I would like to have its own UnitOfWork. Clearly in this instance it would make more sense to open another Session for the "Tools - Options" form and not use the currently open session for the underlying form. Can we have a Dictionary of Sessions on the one thread? Any advice on session management is appreciated.

  When I open .doc file in Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 and MathType 6 installed I get "U" in all formulas instead of "v". The original file was made in MSWord 2003 for Windows with MathType 6. But when I click and open the formula in MathType 6 and then save it back I get correct formula as it was originally written with "v". I have tried lot of stuff like opening the port range 9200:9400 to the server ip without any luck but from what I know all communication inside the server should be allowed with this configuration. The idea is that ES should not be accessible from outside but it should be accessible from this java app and ES uses the port range 9200:9400. • How can I program the function keys on my MacBook?

For example I'd like the following to happen when F1 (or whatever key) is pressed: Launch Safari Open a new window Navigate to some specified site Another example could be: Launch Xcode Open some specific project I've experimented with the Automator for things like re-naming dozens of files in a particular directory but I don't know where to start for the above examples.

• Ubuntu web server 11.10 ftp/server issue

  I was wondering if I could get some help with FTP, atleast I'm pretty sure it has to do with FTP. Although it could have to do with something else, I'm not 100% sure.. Now, for fare warning, I'm no ubuntu dominator, I'm pretty newb. Anyway, I've attempted to build a webserver to to test php and what not for a site I'm building. Now everything works, the php, the sql etc. By the way, I built this in VMware, so it's virtual, over a network, so I can access stuff from anywhere. I'm in a college right now so yeah. The one problem I have is this. I go into the terminal, and do ifconfig to find my IP. I get it and go to a browser on a different machine and type that IP in. I get the "index of/" page, where I can browse the website I'm making. I can click through folders and what not. I can click on things and they open up. Now lets say I'm working on my desktop and open up an FTP and drag and drop something into there, go to the IP in the browser again and try to open it. I either get "Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://my_server_ip/phpinfo.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. Here are some suggestions: Reload this webpage later." or "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /html.html on this server." But, lets say I make it on the server itself, and try, bam, magic it works. I'm sure I set the permissions to let everyone open and view the files, but maybe I didn't? I'm not sure, and this is where I was hoping I could get some help. By the way, I followed a tutorial on changing the www folder (apache) from /var/www to home/"user"/www. I can't recall how I did that, but it's there and my ftp goes to the home/"user"/www folder. But yeah, any and all help is appreciated. Like I said, I'm really new to this, but I do enjoy attempting to make these servers and learning how they work, so it's not like making this webserver is a project for a class, It's just assisting me in testing stuff for another class and possibly other websites later on down the road. Anyway, anyone who decides to help, thanks so much, I'd really appreciate it. Nate. P.S. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 desktop edition with a LAMP server

• Optimizing Levenshtein Distance Algorithm

  I have a stored procedure that uses Levenshtein Distance to determine the result closest to what the user typed. The only thing really affecting the speed is the function that calculates the Levenshtein Distance for all the records before selecting the record with the lowest distance (I've verified this by putting a 0 in place of the call to the Levenshtein function). The table has 1.5 million records, so even the slightest adjustment may shave off a few seconds. Right now the entire thing runs over 10 minutes.
