• what in/out bound mail system to use ? hosted or not ?

  hi all I have a ruby / rails application that integrates in and outgoing email directly into the app. The app is going to be running on multiple domains each with posible many users sending and recieving email. I have looked into sendgrid, mailchimp and mad mimi as hosted services and also looked to create my own email server. There are advantages and disadvantages of both solutions and i am not sure which one to go down and am hoping someone can give me advice ?? Any help will be great. I know email is a hassle to manage but once set up correctly cant be that bad ?? Thanks in advance Rick

• Does WCF always use SOAP to send information over your binding?

  I understand you can choose from a range of bindings, such as TCP, HTTP, HTTPS etc. Am I correct in thinking it always uses SOAP to send data over this connection? I am watching a guide to WCF and it is talking about how exceptions are serialized into SOAP and sent to the client. I would have thought that not all bindings would use SOAP to send data, so I am a bit confused about how it works. Although I understand the fundamentals of WCF, how to set up services and use a proxy on the client, it doesn't seem to have explained exactly how the data is packaged up to send. Perhaps the answer is obvious, that it just uses XML / SOAP, but I would love to know for sure!

  I need to do a cross-domain request in a chrome extension. I know I can it via message passing but I'd rather stick to just jQuery idioms (so my javascript can also work as a <script src="">). I do the normal: $.getJSON("http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=cat&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=?", callback(function(data) { alert(data); }); but in the error console I see: Uncaught ReferenceError: jsonp1271044791817 is not defined Is jQuery not inserting the callback function correctly into the document? What can I do to make this work?

  Azure itself is imo PaaS and not IaaS. Do you agree? MS gurantees an availability of 99% and a strong consistency. You can find MS SLAs here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/sla (three SLAs Uptime: http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/4889/unbenanntqt.png ) I can't find anyhing about how they are going to archive that. Do they do backups? If Yes: How do they manage consistency? According to the Cap theorem (http://camelcase.blogspot.com/2007/08/cap-theorem.html ) their claims are not realistic. 2.1 Do you know detailed technical stuff about the how they are going to realize the claims about consistency and availability? On the MS page you'll find three SLAs .docs, one for SQL Azure, the second for Azure AppFabric/.Net Services and the third for Azure Compute&Storage.(Screenshot in 1.) How can one track whether SLAs are violated? Do they offer some sort of monitor, so I don't have to measure the uptime by myself?

  I'm trying to get connected to another ASA via Cisco VPN Client. I am behind an ASA 5505 myself and I am tryihng to VPN to a 5510. I get the message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding. I can connect to the other ASA if I use a normal cheap Linksys.   I want to use JAX-RS REST services as a back-end for a web application used directly by humans with browsers. Since humans make mistakes from time to time I want to validate the form input and redisplay the form with validation message, if something wrong was entered. By default JAX-RS sends a 400 or 404 status code if not all or wrong values were send. Say for example the user entered a "xyz" in the form field "count": @POST public void create(@FormParam("count") int count) { ... } JAX-RS could not convert "xyz" to int and returns "400 Bad Request". How can I tell the user that he entered an illegal value into the field "count"? Is there something more convenient than using Strings everywhere and perform conversation by hand?

• Ajax Enabled WCF Service Javascript issue...

  I'm a noob working with Ajax-Enabled WCF Services... Right now I have an AJAX service which calls a different WCF service that is using wsHttpBinding. The WCF wsHttpBinding service lives in a different web app on the same IIS6 server. The AJAX javascript proxy is only created when I enable anonymous access on the app hosting the AJAX service. If I remove anonymous access, IE6 bombs with an 'Undefined' error when call the AJAX proxy. In a nut shell, my AJAX service sends a request back to IIS (same domain/app), and while on the server it sends a WCF service request for data on a different app on the same IIS server. The service returning data is setup with Windows authentication, wsHttpBinding, and security mode is set to message. Any ideas? Both apps have are using windows authentication.

  I have a SharePoint 2010 site with a document library for storing Excel files. If someone is editing an Excel file (using stand-alone Excel, not Excel services), everyone else will be forced to open the file read-only until the first person is done editing. Is there a way around this? What I want is to allow two or more people to be able to edit the file at the same time. Also, I don't want people to overwrite each other. Instead, I'd like SharePoint to merge their changes. Is this possible in SharePoint 2010?

  Whenever training topic questions are asked, the answers are fairly typical, and involve a pretty limited subset of topics like OO, design patterns, algorithms, web services, SQL, etc., but I wonder if there are some fringe topics that are still applicable to the programming field and would give me a more rounded approach to development. When I think of "fringe", I think of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly articles that discuss how to use real world (sometimes obscure) exploits, or something like Maker Faire that demonstrates embedded systems programming using Arduino. I have around $1500-2000 to spend, and my job entails Java technologies, but that does not limit my options.

I have read of someone running, production-wise, Google app engine development version on their own server. My questions are: Are there any security issues running GAE development on your own server in production mode and exposing it to the www? If so how to mitigate them? Can GAE dev be run on Amazon? Is it possible to port my GAE apps running on Google servers to a GAE running on Amazon, without code changes, but without changing any reference in using other gdata services such as google docs, youtube, gmail, etc. How to configure GAE dev server to use my own hadoop? Or to use Amazon's hadoop?

  What's the "right" way in Drupal to create reports? I was hoping to use a view but am not having much luck. My goal is to create a table of rows containing three fields: user name, location, SUM of volunteer hours. Once I have this part working, I plan to expose filters for Location and Date. Views Calc only allows you to group by one field. I know Crystal Reports and MSSQL Reporting Services and I was hoping to find a similar kind of thing for Drupal. Is there a framework, examples, or a module to help with this, or do I need to write a custom module implementing the views_alter_SQL hook to get the desired data for each report? • Which language/framework to use for this desktop internet application?

  I'd like to experiment with a new language/framework to work on some desktop tools for myself, which will do tasks related to internet services. I.e. i'd like to to monitor some of my servers for http or icmp response, also parse xml responses. I have experience with php, lua, mysql, and basic knowledge of java and c++. I'm also interested in exploring multithreading for this, background tasks and a responsive gui do need that as i have read. Being a private project, i certainly want to learn something new, but i don't have that much free time. The question for you would be which language and what framework to choose that could help me with this tasks: lightweight + fast gui (windows only would be ok, platform-independent even better) network/socket support, html module would be appreciated htmlview support xml "parsing" support (xpath or something like the phpish DOMDocument class) threading support Free software would be nice, but paying some bucks won't hurt me if it really helps the case.

  Searched SO and Everywhere else, including the .net developers guide to directory services programming book - no luck. I am trying to create a simple password reset web page that allows the user to change their password. The change password portion of the code is working fine. For the users I would also like to display when their current password will expire next. Using the sample code from the book mentioned above I was able to get all of the code setup however, the attribute that is returned is always equal to Long.MinValue and hence cannot be inverted to a positive number, plus this means it did not find the proper domain setting. Does anyone have sample code or references for getting the password expiration in a Windows 2008 or R2 domain environment where password policies can be different for each user?

  Is there any standards/guidelines/good practices for making websites with support of different content and UI? I'm interesting in articles/tutorials, that cover this topics. E.g. there going to be website for multiple countries. And user should have possibility to select UI and content languages separately. I assume that not all content will be translated, so there should be some mechanism for showing "default language" content for specific page. But again, should this "default" be per site, or per country? E.g. in some countries (Belgium, Finland) there are several official languages. If one language is unavailable, should default be second one, or English? Another example: many people prefer English UI (no mater of their origin), but want local scales (inches, meters) and local services. I don't care much about programing languages now, just want to understand what users are expected, what should be scope, and what are good practices.

The generated classes now follow the Java casing convention used in the web service, for example class names are camelCase rather than PascalCase. Is there a way to get the desired casing from the service reference? CLARIFICATION: With WSE based services, one could modify the generated Reference.cs to provide .NET standard casing and use XmlElementAttribute to map to the Java naming presented by the external web service, like this: [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlElementAttribute("resultType", Form=System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaForm.Unqualified)] [System.Runtime.Serialization.DataMember] public virtual MyResultType ResultType { ... } Not terribly maintenance-friendly without writing custom code to either generate the proxy code or modify it after it's been generated. What I'm after is one or more options to present a WCF generated client proxy to calling applications using the .NET casing conventions, achieving the same as I did previously with WSE.   Hi... After restarting "Windows Sharepoint Services Timer" service the "Site usage report" shows only one day of activity (matches the day we restarted the service) while every other day has zeros. I took a look in the "\LOGS\" dir and is plenty of logs with the visit's information for the whole year! Why the usage report ignores it? I think maybe the log file of the day showed could have some kind of mark that the other ones doesn't... Thanks, Jorge.

  Hi, In our project we are consuming WCF webservices exposed at Central location as services with basicHttpBinding. In client desktop application we need consume those webservices. I am able to generate proxy class using WSDL.exe. But, I need to convert data/class given by the webservice into my local class, for that now I am xmlserialzing those class/objects given by webservice and deserializing into my local classes as both classes schema matches exactly same. When I query for a list of Contracts I grab the 1st Service available like this: q.Select(c => new ContractSearchResult() { ContractID = c.ContractID, FirstService = c.Contract2Service.FirstOrDefault().Service.Name, ServiceCount = c.Contract2Service.Count, } ).ToList(); q is an IQueryable that has some filtering & paging already applied. (When I display this list I show the FirstService if there's only 1. If 1 I show "My1stService (3)" to show I'm seeing the 1st of 3 services) This works fine. My question is this: Is there any way to sort by FirstService? Or is this impossible? I haven't found a way of expressing this in linq. Any help would be appreciated.

  I am generating web service client in Eclipse Helios by Axis 1.4 version. The client stubs are working fine as per the expectation by using local main programs. • Match outgoing email to SMTP logs

  My .net app generates messages which it sends via the google hosted mailserver. I'd link to track the results so I can see bounced and invalid domain messages. How (and/or where) do i embed something in either the body or another element of the message that lets me link the original message with any and all following smtp traffic? Is the problem is complicated by the fact that out-going is handled by googlemail? Native IIS services running under winserver08. logparser should be an integral part of my solution, shouldn't it? thx
