• Is there a way to highlight specific words or numbers without inserting a span tag?

  I've got blocks of text with various specs in them and want to have jquery highlight whatever matches a specific pattern without inserting any extra html. The following is the kind of text that I've got to work with. Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 920 (2.66GHz, 8MB cache, 4.8GT/sec)/ Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit- English/ 640 GB Serial ATA non Raid (7200 Rpm)/ 6GB 1333MHz (3x2GB) Tri Channel Memory/ Display Not Included/ 16X DVD+/- RW Optical Drive (DVD & CD read and write)/ 1.8GB NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX260 graphics card/ Integrated HDA 7.1 Dolby Digital Audio What I'm hoping jquery can do is highlight some of the basic specs without inserting any extra html. Maybe working off a list of values matching the spec format using some wildcards where neededed? The css to select the correct tag is #list div div div+p or I could just give the p class but would rather not. Is this kind of thing possible?

  This question is for learning purposes. Suppose I am writing a simple SQL admin console using CGI and Python. At http://something.com/admin, this admin console should allow me to modify a SQL database (i.e., create and modify tables, and create and modify records) using an ordinary form. In the least secure case, anybody can access http://something.com/admin and modify the database. You can password protect http://something.com/admin. But once you start using the admin console, information is still transmitted in plain text. So then you use HTTPS to secure the transmitted data. Questions: To describe to a learner, how would you incrementally add security to the least secure environment in order to make it most secure? How would you modify/augment my three (possibly erroneous) steps above? What basic tools in Python make your steps possible? Optional: Now that I understand the process, how do sophisticated libraries and frameworks inherently achieve this level of security?

  Hi all, I have been implementing a new project which I have decided to use the repository pattern and Entity Framework. I have sucessfuly implemented basic CRUD methods and I have no moved onto my DeepLoads. From all the examples and documentation I can find to do this I need to call something like this: public Foo DeepLoadFoo() { return (from foobah in Context.Items.Include("bah").Include("foo").Include("foofoo") select foo).Single(); } This doesnt work for me, maybe I am trying to be too lazy but what I would like to achieve would be something along the lines of this: public Foo DeepLoadFoo(Foo entity, Type[] childTypes) { return (from foobah in Context.Items.Include(childTypes).Single(); } Is anything like this possible, or am I stuck with include.include.include.include?   Hey all I have a 2 MS SQL 2005 databases,a TEST and DEV database. Now our developer added some extra columns,tables etc in the DEV database.This created differences in the TEST database.is there a script i can write tha can tell me what the changes where in the DEV database between certain dates...i found a couple of tools but they are quite basic and dont really generate change scripts etc. Also tried the change script function in management studio but it seems to be working when the change is first made and not later. • How to search for a string including spaces in Objective C?

  I have a real basic command-line program, in Objective-C, that searches for user inputed information. Unfourtunately, the code will only read the first word in series of words that the user enters. For example, if the user enters in "Apples are great", only "Apples" is kept (and hence searched later on), excluding the "are great" part of the sentence. • Where are the best locations to write an error log in Windows?

  Where would you write an error log file, say ErrorLog.txt, in Windows? Keep in mind the path would need to be open to basic users for file write permissions. I know the eventlog is a possible location for writing errors, but does it work for "user" level permissions? EDIT: I am targeting Windows 2003, but I was posing the question in such a way as to have a "General Guideline" for where to write error logs. As for the EventLog, I have had issues before in an ASP.NET application where I wanted to log to the Windows event log, but I had security issues causing me heartache. (I do not recall the issues I had, but remember having them.)

  Hi everyone. I am making use of jQuery 1.4.4 and jQuery UI 1.8.7 in a legacy code base. I have added a few combobox() ui-widgets, these comboboxes live along side normal <select> dropdowns. I am finding it difficult to get the two elements to look the same, i.e. the unstyled <select> with it's Internet Explorer / Windows based style and the most basic jQuery UI Themed ui-widget combobox. The screenshot shows an unstyled <select> on the left and a jQuery ui-widget combobox on the right: Is it possible to make the two look the same?

• Should I start with Trac 0.12 ?

  I'm going to start using Trac for the first time. From what I've gathered, the latest 0.12 is capable of supporting multiple project easily (which is something I will need since I got about 5 projects). However, it seems 0.12 is still in the development (0.12-dev). So, my question is, is it good enough for a newbie in Trac like me to use it? Does anyone has any experience using it ? It will be installed on a Linux server. BTW, I'll only be using the basic functions such as svn browser, wiki, tickets and others.

• O(N log N) Complexity - Similar to linear?

  Hey All, So I think I'm going to get buried for asking such a trivial but I'm a little confused about something. I have implemented quicksort in Java and C and I was doing some basic comparissons. The graph came out as two straight lines, with the C being 4ms faster than the Java counterpart over 100,000 random integers. The code for my tests can be found here; android-benchmarks I wasn't sure what an (n log n) line would look like but I didn't think it would be straight. I just wanted to check that this is the expected result and that I shouldn't try to find an error in my code. I stuck the formula into excel and for base 10 it seems to be a straight line with a kink at the start. Is this because the difference between log(n) and log(n+1) increases linearly? Thanks, Gav

• Unable to return large result set ORA-22814

  Hello All I am encountering an issue when I am trying to load a large result set using a range query in Oracle 10g. When I try a smaller range (1 to 100), it works but when I try a larger range(1 and 1000), I get the following error "ORA-22814: attribute or element value is larger than specified in type" error. I have a basic UDT (PostComments_Type) and I have tried using both a VArray and a Table type of PostComments_Type but that hasn't made a difference. • How to rate a connect four game situation in java

  Hey, I am trying to write a simple AI for a "Get four" game. The basic game principles are done, so I can throw in coins of different color, and they stack on each other and fill a 2D Array and so on and so forth. until now this is what the method looks like: public int insert(int x, int color) //0 = empty, 1=player1 2=player2" X is the horizontal coordinate, as the y coordinate is determined by how many stones are in the array already, I think the idea is obvious. Now the problem is I have to rate specific game situations, so find how many new pairs, triplets and possible 4 in a row I can get in a specific situation to then give each situation a specific value. With these values I can setup a "Game tree" to then decide which move would be best next (later on implementing Alpha-Beta-Pruning). My current problem is that I can't think of an efficient way to implement a rating of the current game situation in a java method.   Hi all, I have a simple class library written in c#. using System; namespace TestDll { public class Test { public string HelloWorld { get { return "Hello World"; } } } } My question is how can I call this HelloWorld function from Microsoft Office Visual Basic (which I think is VB6)? My first step was to add the DLL as a reference - but on browsing and selecting the compiled DLL the message "Can't add a reference to the specified file." was thrown. • What is good practice for writing web applications that control daemons (and their config files)

  Can someone suggest some basic advice on dealing with web applications that interact with configuration files like httpd.conf, bind zone files, etc. I understand that it's bad practice, in fact very dangerous to allow arbitrary execution of code without fully validating it and so on. But say you are tasked to write a small app that allows one to add vhosts to an apache configuration. Do you have your code execute with full privileges, do you write future variables into a database and have a cron job (with full privileges) execute a script that pulls the vars from the database and throws them into a template config file, etc. Some thoughts & contributions on this issue would be appreciated. tl;dr - how can you securely write a web app to update/create entries in a config file like apache's httpd.conf, etc.

• Securing a REST API

  I am in the middle of developing a REST API - the first one I ever have. The data being passed through the API is not of such a critical nature that there will be loss of life, economics etc if it was intercepted but at the same time I would like it to be secure. The data being transferred is simply like the data that would be transferred on Twitter or Facebook - not overly confidential but still should be kept private. What is the best way to secure this data? Am I best to use HTTP Basic Auth over SSL or should I be looking into something like OAuth. I have never really used REST much before so bit of a first for me. Thanks

• Human readable URL causes a problem in Ruby on Rails

  I have a basic CRUD with "Company" model. To make the company name show up, I did def to_param name.parameterize end Then I accessed http://localhost:3000/companies/american-express which runs show action in the companies controller. Obviously this doesn't work because the show method is as following: def show @company = Company.find_by_id(params[:id]) end The params[:id] is american-express. This string is not stored anywhere. Do I need to store the short string (i.e., "american-express") in the database when I save the record? Or is there any way to retrieve the company data without saving the string in the database?

• Unwanted automated creation of new instances of an activity class

  I have an activity (called Sender) with the most basic UI, only a button that sends a message when clicked. In the onClickListener I only call this method: private void sendSMS(String msg) { PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, new Intent(this, Sender.class), 0); PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, myIntent, 0); SmsManager sms = SmsManager.getDefault(); sms.sendTextMessage("1477", null, msg, pi, null); } This works ok, the message is sent but every time a message is sent a new instance of Sender is started on top of the other. If I call sendSMS method three times, three new instances are started. I'm quite new to android so I need some help with this, I only want the same Sender to be on all the time

• WPF WebBrowser - How to Zoom Content?

  Trying to test basic browser concepts in a WPF (C#/XAML, .NET 4.0) WebBrowser application. So far, the only problem is programatically zooming. Has anyone had any experience with this? MSDN lists nothing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.controls.webbrowser.aspx Additionally, I have tried various things such as RenderTransform options to no avail. • Are frameworks really necessary for beginners/intermediates? (PHP)

  I have been programming for around 6months and currently learning PHP/Mysql. I can create basic functionally sites starting from a plain sheet of paper. Is it necessary I use frameworks to create sites? Currently, everything I do is from scratch. I'll borrow codes from old codes, ask people for help, etc. Are frameworks going to help me much more? Is it alright if I put a site public without using a framework? (I have not looked a lot into frameworks, so my knowledge is limited, but I'm just curious)

• Second Unit Test Not Running

  I am having trouble getting my Method B test to run. The logic is fine, but when the unit tests are run, only Method A will run. If Method A and B are switched in terms of spots, only Method B will run. So clearly the code is wrong at some point. Do I need to call method B's test from inside method A in order to get both unit tests to run?   I've been programming in Ruby for a while now with just the standard MRI implementation of Ruby, but I've always been curious about the other implementations I hear so much about. I was reading about Rubinius the other day, a Ruby interpreter written in Ruby. I tried looking it up in various places, but I was having a hard time figuring out exactly how something like this works. I've never had much experience in compilers or language writing but I'm really interested to figure it out. How exactly can a language be interpreted by itself? • Facebook Open Graph - Grab how many times a page has been liked?

  I have a site that allows users to create a saying and then users "like" those sayings on Facebook. http://www.likeylikey.net/ I got a friend to throw up this simple code in less than 2 hours so it's basic. He knows little to nothing regarding the Open Graph API. Basically, I want to know how I can programmatically store how many times a page has been liked so I can list a "Top 10, most liked pages" list. Right now the index shows a list of all created pages and now I just wish to show the 10 most liked but I need a way of pulling that information from Facebook. Is this possible?

• How should I structure my iPhone OpenGL ES 1.1 game?

  I am building an iPhone OpenGL ES 1.1 game. I am using the OpenGL ES template provided by xcode. I am only using the ES1Renderer. I've coded some basic touch actions the user can take, and I've begun to think about the overall structure of the code. All I'm really doing is using C in the ES1Renderer.m for my entire game state. I have an array of bullet structs, an array on enemy structs, etc.. Besides using this structure, where my entire game state is in ES1Renderer.m as C arrays and structs, what other ways are there to structure the code? Should I be using C++ or Objective-C classes to represent the enemies so they are more modular? The main reason I ask this is because I don't normally code in C, C++ and Objective-C..so I am a little fuzzy on coming up with a good architecture here.

  I'm extending TryPython to (along with various other things) allow users to save a file and subsequently import that file. TryPython overloads the built in file operations, so I need to know what parts of import need to hooked into in order for import to use the overloaded file operations. Really, a basic overview of IronPython's import when used in Silverlight would be extremely helpful. I don't need a complete working solution (although I won't stop you from writing one! :). • How to run AWS sample JAVA code on an EC2

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it? I'm just trying to run the basic DynamoDB example that connects to the database and adds a new table and row
