• JBoss Clustered Service that sends emails from txt file

  I need a little push in the right direction. Here's my problem: I have to create an ultra-reliable service that sends email messages to clients whose addresses are stored in txt file on FTP server. Single txt file may contain unlimited number of entries. Most often the file contains about 300,000 entries. Service exposes interface with just two simple methods: TaskHandle sendEmails(String ftpFilePath); ProcessStatus checkProcessStatus(TaskHandle taskHandle); Method sendEmails() returns TaskHandle by which we can ask for ProcessStatus. For such a service to be reliable clustering is necessary. Processing single txt file might take a long time. Restarting one node in a cluster should have no impact on sending emails. We use JBoss AS 4.2.0 which comes with a nice HASingletonController that ensure one instance of service is running at given time. But once a fail-over happens, the second service should continue work from where the first one stopped. How can I share state between nodes in a cluster in such a way that leaves no possibility of sending some emails twice?

• Objective-C and NSURL: where am I supposed to declare receivedData?

  I have a two classes, a controller called "AppController" and a class called "URLDelegate" that encapsulates the sample NSURL code from Apple's URL Loading System Programming Guide. The guide repeatedly mentions declaring the receivedData instance variable "elsewhere." I assume this means outside of the URLDelagate class, because if I declare it in the URLDelegate class, my controller class can't "see" the data that has been downloaded. I know that data is received, because in my connectionDidFinishLoading function, I have NSLog display the results: NSLog(@"Succeeded! Received %d bytes of data",[receivedData length]); receivedText=[[NSString alloc] initWithData:receivedData encoding: NSASCIIStringEncoding]; NSLog(@"receivedText=%@",receivedText); So I'm a bit stumped with the following questions: Where should I declare receivedData? My controller class? A third class? Can I just declare it like any normal NSMutableData variable? How do I give my URLDelegate class "access" to this variable? E.g., if I declare receivedData in my AppController class, wouldn't I have to instantiate AppController within URLDelegate? But how would this possible if it's the AppController class which is instantiating the URLDelegate class in the first place? Especially with regard to the last question, I feel like I must be overlooking something blindingly obvious and fundamental. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

• L10N: Trusted test data for Locale Specific Sorting

  I'm working on an internationalized database application that supports multiple locales in a single instance. When international users sort data in the applications built on top of the database, the database theoretically sorts the data using a collation appropriate to the locale associated with the data the user is viewing. I'm trying to find sorted lists of words that meet two criteria: the sorted order follows the collation rules for the locale the words listed will allow me to exercise most / all of the specific collation rules for the locale I'm having trouble finding such trusted test data. Are such sort-testing datasets currently available, and if so, what / where are they? "words.en.txt" is an example text file containing American English text: Andrew Brian Chris Zachary I am planning on loading the list of words into my database in randomized order, and checking to see if sorting the list conforms to the original input. Because I am not fluent in any language other than English, I do not know how to create sample datasets like the following sample one in French (call it "words.fr.txt"): cote côte coté côté The French prefer diacritical marks to be ordered right to left. • Do I really need bindParam?

  Hi there! I'm trying to do a little PDO CRUD to learn some PDO. I have a question about bindParam. SO the query looks like this: UPDATE table SET this = ?, another = ? WHERE title = ? AND time = ? as you can see I dont use bindParams instead I pass the right values in the right order ($array) directly into the execute($array) method. • Delphi TRttiType.GetMethods return zero TRttiMethod instances

  I've recently been able to fetch a TRttiType for an interface using TRttiContext.FindType using Robert Loves "GetType"-workaround ("registering" the interface by an explicit call to ctx.GetType, e.g. RType := ctx.GetType(TypeInfo(IMyPrettyLittleInterface));). One logical next step would be to iterate the methods of said interface. Consider program rtti_sb_1; {$APPTYPE CONSOLE} uses SysUtils, Rtti, mynamespace in 'mynamespace.pas'; var ctx: TRttiContext; RType: TRttiType; Method: TRttiMethod; begin ctx := TRttiContext.Create; RType := ctx.GetType(TypeInfo(IMyPrettyLittleInterface)); if RType <> nil then begin for Method in RType.GetMethods do WriteLn(Method.Name); end; ReadLn; end. This time, my mynamespace.pas looks like this: IMyPrettyLittleInterface = interface ['{6F89487E-5BB7-42FC-A760-38DA2329E0C5}'] procedure SomeProcedure; end; Unfortunately, RType.GetMethods returns a zero-length TArray-instance. Are there anyone able to reproduce my troubles? (Note that in my example I've explicitly fetched the TRttiType using TRttiContext.GetType, not the workaround; the introduction is included to warn readers that there might be some unresolved issues regarding rtti and interfaces.)   I need to parse strings inputs where the columns are separated by columns and any field that contains a comma in the data is wrapped in quotes (commas separated, quoted text identifiers). For this project I need to remove the quotes and any commas that occur between pairs of quotes. Basically, I need to remove commas and quotes that are contained in fields while preserving the commas that are used to separate the fields. Here's a little code I put together that handles the simple scenario: // Sample input 1: This works and covers 99% of the records that I need to parse. string str1 = "[email protected],2010/03/27 12:2:02,,some_first_name,some_last_name,,\"This Address Works, Suite 200\",Some City,TN,09876-5432,9795551212x123,XYZ"; str1 = Regex.Replace(str1, "\"([^\"^,]*),([^\"^,]*)\"", "$1$2"); Console.WriteLine(str1); // Outputs: [email protected],2010/03/27 12:2:02,,some_first_name,some_last_name,,This Address Works Suite 200,Some City,TN,09876-5432,9795551212x123,XYZ Although this code works for most of my records, it doesn't work when a field contains more than one commas. What I would like to do is modify the code so that it remove each instance of a comma contained within the column no matter how many commas there are in the field. I don't want to hard code only handling 2 commas, or 3 commas, or 25 commas. The code should just remove all the commas in the field. • Technical choices in unmarshaling hash-consed data

  There seems to be quite a bit of folklore knowledge floating about in restricted circles about the pitfalls of hash-consing combined with marshaling-unmarshaling of data. I am looking for citable references to these tidbits. For instance, someone once pointed me to library aterm and mentioned that the authors had clearly thought about this and that the representation on disk was bottom-up (children of a node come before the node itself in the data stream). This is indeed the right way to do things when you need to re-share each node (with a possible identical node already in memory). This re-sharing pass needs to be done bottom-up, so the unmarshaling itself might as well be, too, so that it's possible to do everything in a single pass. I am in the process of describing difficulties encountered in our own context, and the solutions we found. I would appreciate any citable reference to the kind of aforementioned folklore knowledge. Some people obviously have encountered the problems before (the aterm library is only one example). But I didn't find anything in writing. Even the little piece of information I have about aterm is hear-say. I am not worried it's not reliable (you can't make this up), but "personal communication" and "look how it's done in the source code" are considered poor form in citations. I have enough references on hash-consing alone. I am only interested in references where it interferes with other aspects of programming, such as marshaling or distribution.

  Hi, I have a class which inherits from CListCtrl class, say class list. I have another class dlg, which inherits from CDialog. Class dlg contains an instance of class list. I have got a delete button in class dlg, on which I delete the selected item in listCtrl and do lots of other processing. I want the same functionality on delete key. I added OnKeyDown() fn is my class list, where I can capture VK_DELETE key. But my problem is that, how do I do otehr processing that I need to do in dialog class. All that processing is dlg class based not list class based. I have many such dlg classes with different data and in every dlg class processing is different. I tried capturing VK_DELETE in dialog class, but it doesn't capture it if focus is on list class. I am totally stuck and have no idea, how to do this. Please give me some idea how i can do this. • OO Objective-C design with XML parsing

  Hi, I need to parse an XML record that represents a QuizQuestion. The "type" attribute tells the type of question. I then need to create an appropriate subclass of QuizQuestion based on the question type. • How to run White + SL4 UATs through TeamCity?

  After experiencing a series of unpleasant issues with TFS, including source code orruption and project management inflexibility, we (meaning the project team of which I'm a part) have decided to move from TFS 2010 to TeamCity + SVN + V1. I've managed to get our MSTest component and unit tests running as part of every build. However, our UATs are failing, and I was hoping for some advice from the TeamCity community as to best practices w.r.t. running web servers and interacting with the desktop. Each of our UAT fixtures starts a web server to host the site, like this: public static void StartWebServer() { var pathToSite = @"C:\projects\myproject\FrontEnd\MyProject.FrontEnd.Web"; var webServer = new Process { StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo { Arguments = string.Format("/port:9150 /path:\"{0}\"", pathToSite), FileName = @"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DevServer\10.0\WebDev.WebServer40.EXE" } }; webServer.Start(); } Needless to say, this doesn't work when running through TeamCity, as the pathToSite value is different each time. I'm hoping there is a way of determining the path into which the the code is checked out prior to building? That would allow me to point the web server at the right place. The other issue is that our UATs use White to drive the Silverlight UI through an instance of Internet Explorer: _browserWindow = InternetExplorer.Launch("http://localhost:9150/index.html#/Home", "Home - Windows Internet Explorer"); _document = _browserWindow.SilverlightDocument; I've ensured that the TeamCity service is granted the ability to interact with the desktop, and I've set the build agent machine up to log in automatically (an open session is a pre-requisite for White to work properly). Is that all I need to do or are there additional steps required?

• Long-held TCP sessions in an ASMX client

  Hi, I have an ASP.NET application which talks to a third-party SOAP web service. My application uses an ASMX client proxy (i.e. System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol). The third-party service uses WCF, although I don't expect that makes much difference. I should note that we're using .NET 3.5 SP1. We haven't customised the proxy or done anything unusual - we're just making standard web service requests and getting back the results. We have encapsulated the proxy reference within a using block so it will get disposed after the response is received. We've been told that our application is behaving strangely in its use of TCP sessions. Instead of opening a new TCP session for each request from a new proxy instance (which is what I would have expected it to do), it's apparently keeping several connections alive and re-using them. This is causing some issues at the third party end, as they are expecting us to be using multiple sessions. Is this a known behaviour for the SoapHttpClientProtocol client proxy? If so, is there any way we can override it so that each request results in a new TCP session? Thanks, John

• What is the way to go to fake my database layer in a unit test?

  Hi, i have a question about unit testing. say i have a controller with one create method which puts a new customer in the database: //code a bit shortened public actionresult Create(Formcollection formcollection){ client c = nwe client(); c.Name = formcollection["name"]; ClientService.Save(c); { Clientservice would call a datalayer object and save it in the database. What i do now is create a database testscript and set my database in a know condition before testing. So when i test this method in the unit test, i know that there must be one more client in the database, and what it's name is. In short: ClientController cc = new ClientController(); cc.Create(new FormCollection (){name="John"}); //i know i had 10 clients before assert.areEqual(11, ClientService.GetNumberOfClients()); //the last inserted one is John assert.areEqual("John", ClientService.GetAllClients()[10].Name); So i've read that unit testing should not be hitting the database, i've setup an IOC for the database classes, but then what? I can create a fake database class, and make it do nothing. But then ofcourse my assertions will not work because if i say GetNumberOfClients() it will alwasy return X because it has no interaction with the fake database class used in the Create Method. I can also create a List of Clients in the fake database class, but as there will be two different instance created (one in the controller action and one in the unit test), they will have no interaction. What is the way to make this unit test work without a database?

• Reading from a database located in the Program Files folder using ODBC

  We have an application that stores its database files in a subfolder of the Program Files directory. These files are redirected to the VirtualStore in Vista and Windows 7. We represent data from the database using Microsoft DataReports (VB6). So far so good. But we now want to use Crystal Reports XI to represent data from the database. Our idea is to NOT pass this data to CR from our program, but to have CR retreive it from the database using a a system DSN through ODBC. In this way we hope to present our users with more flexibility in designing their own reports. What we do want to ensure though is that these system DSNs are configured correctly when the user installs our program or when the program calls the Crystal Report. Is there a smart way to do this using System variables for instance, instead of having to write a routine that checks for OS-version, whether UAC is enabled on the OS, whether the write restrictions on the Program Files folder have been lifted, etc and then adapts he System DSN to point to either the C:\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder, or the C:\Users\User\AppData\VirtualStore\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder? Suggestions for an entirely different approach are welcome too!

  Hi, I've completed a OOP course assignment where I design and code a Complex Number class. For extra credit, I can do the following: Add two complex numbers. The function will take one complex number object as a parameter and return a complex number object. When adding two complex numbers, the real part of the calling object is added to the real part of the complex number object passed as a parameter, and the imaginary part of the calling object is added to the imaginary part of the complex number object passed as a parameter. Subtract two complex numbers. The function will take one complex number object as a parameter and return a complex number object. When subtracting two complex numbers, the real part of the complex number object passed as a parameter is subtracted from the real part of the calling object, and the imaginary part of the complex number object passed as a parameter is subtracted from the imaginary part of the calling object. • Is there a good way to execute MySQL statements atomically via JDBC?

  Suppose I have a table that contains valid data. I would like to modify this data in some way, but I'd like to make sure that if any errors occur with the modification, the table isn't changed and the method returns something to that effect. For instance, (this is kind of a dumb example, but it illustrates the point so bear with me) suppose I want to edit all the entries in a "name" column so that they are properly capitalized. For some reason, I want either ALL of the names to have proper capitalization, or NONE of them to have proper capitalization (and the starting state of the table is that NONE of them do). Is there an already-implemented way to run a batch update on the table and be assured that, if any one of the updates fails, all changes are rolled back and the table remains unchanged? I can think of a few ways to do this by hand (though suggestions are welcomed), but it'd be nice if there was some method I could use that would function this way. I looked at the java.sql.statement.executeBatch() command, but I'm not convinced by the documentation that my table wouldn't be changed if it failed in some manner.

• Algorithm for count-down timer that can add on time

  I'm making a general timer that has functionality to count up from 0 or count down from a certain number. I also want it to allow the user to add and subtract time. Everything is simple to implement except for the case in which the timer is counting down from some number, and the user adds or subtracts time from it. For example: (m_clock is an instance of SFML's Clock) float Timer::GetElapsedTime() { if ( m_forward ) { m_elapsedTime += m_clock.GetElapsedTime() - m_elapsedTime; } else { m_elapsedTime -= m_elapsedTime - m_startingTime + m_clock.GetElapsedTime(); } return m_elapsedTime; } To be a bit more clear, imagine that the timer starts at 100 counting down. After 10 seconds, the above function would look like 100 -= 100 - 100 + 10 which equals 90. If it was called after 20 more seconds it would look like 90 -= 90 - 100 + 30 which equals 70. This works for normal counting, but if the user calls AddTime() ( just m_elapsedTime += arg ) then the algorithm for backwards counting fails miserably. I know that I can do this using more members and keeping track of previous times, etc. but I'm wondering whether I'm missing some implementation that is extremely obvious. I'd prefer to keep it as simple as possible in that single operation.

• Finding the right terminology for a dictionary table

  My concern is about what I currently call "dictionary tables", that are database tables containing a list of controlled vocabulary. Let's use an example: Suppose you have a table User containing fields: user_id : primary key first_name last_name user_type_id : foreign key to the UserType table and another table UserType with just two fields: user_type_id : primary key name : the name/value of a particular type of user. For instance, the UserType table may contain (1, Administrator), (2, PowerUser), (3, Normal)... My question is: what is the canonical term for a table like UserType, that only contains a list of (dictinct) words. I want to publish some code that help managing this kind of tables, but first I have to name them ! Thanks for your help. Current state of thought: For now I feel Lookup Tables is a good term. • Project management: Implementing custom errors in VS compilation process

  Like many architects, I've developed coding standards through years of experience to which I expect my developers to adhere. This is especially a problem with the crowd that believes that three or four years of experience makes you a senior-level developer.Approaching this as a training and code review issue has generated limited success. So, I was thinking that it would be great to be able to add custom compile-time errors to the build process to more strictly enforce this and other guidelines. For instance, we use stored procedures for ALL database access, which provides procedure-level security, db encapsulation (table structure is hidden from the app), and other benefits. (Note: I am not interested in starting a debate about this.) Some developers prefer inline SQL or parametrized queries, and that's fine - on their own time and own projects. I'd like a way to add a compilation check that finds, say, anything that looks like string sql = "insert into some_table (col1,col2) values (@col1, @col2);" and generates an error or, in certain circumstances, a warning, with a message like Inline SQL and parametrized queries are not permitted. Or, if they use the var keyword var x = new MyClass(); Variable definitions must be explicitly typed. Do Visual Studio and MSBuild provide a way to add this functionality? I'm thinking that I could use a regular expression to find unacceptable code and generate the correct error, but I'm not sure what, from a performance standpoint, is the best way to to integrate this into the build process. We could add a pre- or post-build step to run a custom EXE, but how can I return line- and file-specifc errors? Also, I'd like this to run after compilation of each file, rather than post-link. Is a regex the best way to perform this type of pattern matching, or should I go crazy and run the code through a C# parser, which would allow node-level validation via the parse tree? I'd appreciate suggestions and tales of prior experience.
