Filling a screen width

I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? I would seriously appreciate even someone helping me move on a step! they want everything to sit tight and inline, in some browsers/screens it does but on mine it spreads out with lots of white space. www.thegees.co.uk is the site.

Headless HTML rendering to image on CentOS 5.4

Hello, I have a project requirement to render HTML and capture the rendered image as a file on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. My specific requirements are: 1) Input will be a URL to the page to render, output will be an image file containing the rendered image of the page 2) CSS must be supported by the renderer up to CSS level-1 3) Static images in the page must be displayed properly in the rendered image, including any transparent color in .GIF files 4) Must be able to run on a headless CentOS 5.4 server. 5) Solution must not depend on any product or component that is not free for commercial use I do not need to do anything with the page other than get the screen capture and save it to an image. The hard part seems to be doing this in a headless environment. Some of the solutions that I've seen discussed need a display in order to work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jim

create a sparse BufferedImage in java

I have to create an image with very large resolution, but the image is relatively "sparse", only some areas in the image need to draw. For example with following code /* this take 5GB memory */ final BufferedImage img = new BufferedImage( 36000, 36000, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB); /* draw something */ Graphics g = img.getGraphics(); g.drawImage(....); /* output as PNG */ final File out = new File("out.png"); ImageIO.write(img, "png", out); The PNG image on the end I created is ONLY about 200~300 MB. The question is how can I avoid creating a 5GB BufferedImage at the beginning? I do need an image with large dimension, but with very sparse color information. Is there any Stream for BufferedImage so that it will not take so much memory?

NSFetchedResultsController not processing certain section driven moves

I utilize a NSFetchedResultsController (frc) with a Core Data store. I implement all the frc delegate methods. The table is sporadically updated by background threads. All the inserts, deletes and updates work fine, with the exception that updates to the frc's index key for rows toward to the bottom of the table (50 rows), do not result in a section move. e.g. if "name" is the index key and the name "Victor" is changed to "Alex", the victor row now shows the name Alex, but is not moved to the top of the table alongside all other names starting with A. As I noted, this is only for rows towards the bottom of the table. If a row like "Andy" is changed to "Ben", the move is indeed processed correctly by the frc. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. I do not use a frc cache. Thanks

How to add a "handle bar" to a sliding div

I have a small splash page and have a browser-wide div that acts as a wrapper and have a div inside of #wrapper that is attached to a $.click(); event to slide the wrapper div out to view the browser-size background photo. I'm wanting to implement a small button/link that will slide in on the bottom right corner after the wrapper div is hidden. I know it is probably mainly CSS, but am needing some help. How can i see if dealloc is being called on a uikit object, or any object not created by myself

I think i have an UIImage that has a higher retain count than it should have and i am probably leaking memory. I use this image as a thumbnail, to set a custom background to a uibutton. So the uibutton is holding a reference to it and so do i. But instead of 2, the retainCount is 3. Do i have to create a custom UIImage derived class and override dealloc if I want to place a log message there and then change the class used from UIImage to my class, or is there an easier way. Flex - weird display behavior on large number of Canvas

Hi, I have a Flex app (SDK 3.5 - FP10) that does mindmap trees. Every node is a Canvas (I'm using Canvas specific properties so I needed it). It has a shadow effect, background color and some small ui element on it (like icons, texts...). It works perfectly until it goes over ~700 nodes (Canvas). Over that number it shows grey rectangles: http://yfrog.com/bhw2pj . If I turn off the DropShadowFilter effect for the Canvas, they are also gone, so I assume it's a DropShadowFilter problem: http://yfrog.com/2d9y8j . The effect is simple: private static var _nodeDropShadow:DropShadowFilter = new DropShadowFilter(1, 45, 0x888888, 1, 1, 1); _backgroundComp.filters = _nodeDropShadow; Is it possible that Flex can't handle that much? Django - Tips to avoid repeating code in views

I'm moving from a PHP background into Django development via python, mostly for the sake of tackling a MVC (or MVT) that I feel makes the most sense, although in this pattern I've started to notice a lot of repeated code in my views. For example, when logged in I have information regarding the user that I would like to appear on every page, although when using render_to_response and in every view this is required I have to grab the information and pass it to the render_to_response function. I'm wondering what would be the most efficient way to cut down on the duplicate code which would in essence be required in all views in a particular app. Thanks in advance.

some OVERLAPS using WSASend not returning in a timely manner using GetQueuedCompletionStatus?

Background: I'm using CreateIoCompletionPort, WSASend/Recv, and GetQueuedCompletionStatus to do overlapped socket io on my server. For flow control, when sending to the client, I only allow several WSASend() to be called when all pending OVERLAPs have popped off the IOCP. Problem: Recently, there are occassions when the OVERLAPs do not get returned to the IOCP. The thread calling GetQueuedCompletionStatus does not get them and they remain in my local pending queue. I've verified that the client DOES receive the data off the socket and the socket is connected. No errors were returned when the WSASend() calls were made. The OVERLAPs simply "never" come back without an external stimulus like the following: Disconnecting the socket from the client or server, immediately allows the GetQueuedCompletionStatus thread to retrieve the OVERLAPs Making additional calls to WSASend(), sometimes several are needed, before all the OVERLAPs suddenly pop off the queue. Question: Has anyone seen this type of behavior? Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks, Geoffrey

is there any cross platform process manager tool

I need a program that is able to launch a set of processes according to a schedule/configuration; the program would run in the background and restart the processes in case they crash. There are standard tools for this kind of task on both windows and unix - what I need is a cross platform program which could run on different operating systems using the same configuration. A portable C/C++ library which implements the basic functionality (i.e. create processes, signal process termination events and all that) would be ok too.

TTPhotoViewController thumbnails rotate but images don't

I have PhotoTest1Controller very similiar to the one in Three20 samples. I implemented necessary shouldRotate methods in necessary places in UITabBarController and UINavController derived classes as well as the table that contains PhotoTest1Controller. A funny thing is happening, when in thumbnail mode, the view rotates properly, but when showing a picture it does not respond to rotation. Moreover, If I rotate in thumbnail view and then switch to single image view in that rotation, I find that the image is properly rotated in the background. It only ignores rotation when it is the topmost view! So, my understanding is that shouldRotate events are properly propagated, but for some reason single image view does not rotate when in top view, unlike the example code which is %98 equal to my code...

Will VC++ MFC become obsolete in near future?

Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI development slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well? How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

C# to Java: What is a [DefaultProperty("value")]?

I do not understand how the DefaultProperty Metadata tag work or what it signifies. I've read the MSDN and went through the sample but I find it confusing. DefaultPropertyAttribute Class I've read a few blogs and they seem to refer to the indexers. I'm not sure why you would want metadata for your properties? I am coming from a Java background, perhaps a Java analogy would help. C# Thread issues

What I have going on is a listview being dynamically created from a previous button click. Then ti starts a background worker in which should clear out the listview and populate the iistview with new information every 30 seconds. J2ME app to access incoming call - Where to start?

Here's my requirement: I often receive calls from unidentified numbers on my mobile phones. I would like an application which would use a reference list like this, and show me the carrier name and the area of origin along with the number on screen. Mobile make : Sony Ericsson Model : C902 Operating System: Propreitary J2ME: MIDP 2.0 Here are my questions: Is it possible to do something like this? I have installed a lot of java apps on my mobile, and all of them have to be launched seperately, can be run in the background, but they never seem to access anything native. If it is possible, which area of J2Me should I start with, for creating an application that achieves the above requirement? If it is not possbile, what are my alternatives?

Custom Data Types

Hello, quick question: I'd like to create some custom data types, but I don't think I'm asking the right question(s). There are "compound Boolean" values used throughout .NET, and I want to design some of my own. I've been using a series of Boolean variables, which works, but just isn't the same. Examples from .NET include: Color.Black Alignment.Centered [fontProperties].Bold* *I forget the actual name, but you get the idea I want to make something like this: ColorSortQualities None DistinguishColor DistinguishNumberOfColors DistinguishColorPattern Once that's been declared, I could do this: if(searchOptions.ColorSortQualities == DistinguishColor) [do stuff] What is this called? CSS/HTML: Highlighting the "full width avaialble" to a list item

I'm working on a website for a small law office. In the side-menu, I'm trying to highlight the "current page". I have tried changing the background of the LI, but this doesn't quite do the trick; the list item doesn't spread to the full width of the menu, so it looks bad. Here's a jfiddle. I would like the yellow section to highlight like the pink section is highlighted: filling up the full vertical and horizontal space, not just highlighting the text. Any suggestions on how to do this? I've included the style tag in the html just for example, obviously, and my real solution will be a little different when it's done. But I can't move forward until I figure out how to somehow highlight the entire line.

One executable with cmd-line params or just many satellite executables?

I design an application back-end. For now, it is a .NET process (a Console Application) which hosts various communication frameworks such as Agatha and NServiceBus. I need to periodically update my datastore with values (coming from the application while it's running). I found three possible ways: Accept command line arguments, so I can call my console app with -update. On start up a background thread will periodically invoke the update method. Create an updater.exe app which will do the updates, but I will have code duplication since in some way it will need to query the data from the source in order to save it to the datastore. Which one is better?

Optional attribute values in MappedField

I'm new to Scala and Lift, coming from a slightly odd background in PLT Scheme. I've done a quick search on this topic and found lots of questions but no answers. I'm probably looking in the wrong place. I've been working my way through tutorials on using Mapper to create database-backed objects, and I've hit a stumbling block: what types should be used to stored optional attribute values. For example, a simple ToDo object might comprise a title and an optional deadline (e.g. http://rememberthemilk.com). The former would be a MappedString, but the latter could not be a MappedDateTime since the type constraints on the field require, say, defaultValue to return a Date (rather than a Date or null/false/???). Is an underlying NULL handled by the MappedField subclasses? Or are there optional equivalents to things like MappedInt, MappedString, MappedDateTime that allow the value to be NULL in the database? Or am I approaching this in the wrong way?

A galaxy with stars, milkyway and other stuffs (WPF)

What is a "realistic" way to build a galaxy in 2D with wpf? I'm not interessed in the physical modelling but the graphical aspect. At least the stars (position, size, color, pulsing etc.) should be generated from code. Generating milkyways would be nice. Main questions are: Stars: lens flare? texturing? Milkyway: bump mapping? How to tile a UIWebView?

I need to use tiles with a UIWebview to improve the rendering and scrolling of the content. I tried to find some info in Google but it seems that there are no examples or technical info about this subject. I am doing some test with CATiledLayer class without luck... Basically, I want to replicate the same that Mobile Safari does with the content of a website. You can see how Safari makes tiles when you see the squared background. Any help will be very welcome! is there a tool to see the difference between two database tables in SQL Server?

What is a good tool to see the differences between 2 tables (or even better, the datasets returned by 2 queries). EDIT: I'm not interested in the schema changes. Just assume that the schemas are the same. background as to why: I'm porting some legacy code which can fill a database with some pre-calced data. The easiest way to see if I got everything right, is to check the output of the old program, with the new one. I was thinking that if there is some kind of 'diff' tool for databases, this might be great.
