  • What is a mantainable way of saving "star rating" in a database?

    I'll use the jQuery plugin for presenting the user with a nice interface The request is to display 5 stars, up to a total score of 10 (2 points per star). By now I thought about using 7/10 as a format for that value, but what if at some point in the future I'll receive a request like We would like to give users more choice, let's increase the total score to 20 (so that each star contributes with a maximum of 4 points) I'll end up with a table with mixed values for the "star rating" column: some will be like 7/10 while others will be like 14/20. Is it ok for you to have this difference in the database and deal with it in the logic layer to have it consistent? Or is preferred another way so that querying the table will not result in inconsistent results outside the application? Maybe floating point values could help me, is it better to store that value as a number less than or equal to one? So in each of the two examples the resulting value stored in the database would be 0,7, as a number, not a varchar, which can be queried also outside the application. What do you think?

  • OOP/MVC advice on where to place a global helper function

    Hi, I have a couple of controllers on my site which are handling form data. The forms use AJAX and I have quite a few methods across different controllers which are having to do some specific processing to return errors in a JSON encoded format - see code below. Obviously this isn't DRY and I need to move this code into a single helper function which I can use globally, but I'm wondering where this should actually go!     I am trying to login to the TV Rage website and get the source code of the My Shows page. I am successfully logging in (I have checked the response from my post request) but then when I try to perform a get request on the My Shows page, I am re-directed to the login page.     I want to create a user sign up process that requires two different forms with the same data one (1st form) is for filling out the data and other one (2nd form) is for displaying the filled data as a summery (before actually saving the data) so then user can view what he/she has filled up... my problem is that how do I pass 1st form's data in to the 2nd one .. So how do I avoid this issue.. and I don't want to use Django session since this is just a simple sign up process and no other interactions involved. Thanks.

  • I have data about deadlocks, but I can't understand why they occur

    I am receiving a lot of deadlocks in my big web application. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2941233/how-to-automatically-re-run-deadlocked-transaction-asp-net-mvc-sql-server Here I wanted to re-run deadlocked transactions, but I was told to get rid of the deadlocks - it's much better, than trying to catch the deadlocks. So I spent the whole day with SQL Profiler, setting the tracing keys etc. And this is what I got. There's a Users table. I have a very high usable page with the following query (it's not the only query, but it's the one that causes troubles) UPDATE Users SET views = views + 1 WHERE ID IN (SELECT AuthorID FROM Articles WHERE ArticleID = @ArticleID) And then there's the following query in ALL pages: User = DB.Users.SingleOrDefault(u => u.Password == password && u.Name == username); That's where I get User from cookies. Very often a deadlock occurs and this second Linq-to-SQL query is chosen as a victim, so it's not run, and users of my site see an error screen. I read a lot about deadlocks... And I don't understand why this is causing a deadlock. So obviously both of this queries run very often. At least once a second. Maybe even more often (300-400 users online). So they can be run at the same time very easily, but why does it cause a deadlock? Please help. Thank you

    I'm getting an error using Google Maps API V3 that I don't understand. My initial map displays just fine, but when I try to get directions, I get the following two errors: Error: The value of the property 'GUnload' is null or undefined, not a Function object Error: Unable to get value of the property 'setDirections': object is null or undefined I'm not using GUnload anywhere, so I don't understand why I'm getting that error.     I have a C# code that basically uploads a file via FTP protocol (using FtpWebRequest). I'd like, however, to first determine whether there is a working internet connection before trying to upload the file (since, if there isn't there is no point in trying, the software should just sleep for a time and check again). Is there an easy way to do it or should I just try to upload the file and in case it failed just try again, assuming the network connection was down?

    Hi, I have to write a script which will be hosted on differents domains. This script has to get information from my server. So, stackoverflow's user told me that i have to use JSON-P format, which, after research, is what i'm going to do. (the data provided in JSON-P is for displaying some information hosted on my server on other website) How do I output JSON-P from my server ? Is it the same as the json_encode function from PHP How do i design the tree pattern for the output JSON-P (you know, like : ({"name" : "foo", "id" : "xxxxx", "blog" : "http://xxxxxx.com"}); can I steal this from my XML output ? (http://bit.ly/9kzBDP) Each time a visitor browse a website on which my widget is it'll make a request on my server, requesting the JSON-P data to display on the client side. It'll increase dramatically the CPU load (1 visitor on the website who will have the script = 1 SQL request on my server to output data), so is there any way to 'caching' the JSON-P information output to refresh it only one or twice a day and stores it into a 'file' (in which extension?). BUT on the other hand i would say that requesting the JSON-P data directly (without caching it) is a plus, because, websites which will integrates the script only want to display THEIR information and not the whole data.   • Signed_request lost in ASP.NET session, confusing my website

    I have an ASP.NET MVC 3 website which is available both from a specific public url, and I'm also making be available as a Facebook App. Inside my website logic, in some places I have to determine whether the current request is from the Facebook-app, or from the public website, because I want to display content based on this environment. So, for eg. if the user is using my site as a facebook-app, then I want to display a picture, and if the user is using my site normally, then I don't wanna display a picture. To determine whether I'm from a Facebook app, I check the "signed_request" in the HttpContext.Request, and store it in the HttpSession to be available for my other actions, not just for that action (url) which is defined for my Facebook app. So when a child-action is executed, I can determine based on the Session, that the website is used as a FB-app or not. The problem happens, when the Session times out, because then althought the logic is still running inside Facebook, my logic thinks it's not inside Facebook. Any advice?

    Hello I have been having a problem with django while trying to work with datetime. In my webapp I have a table like so when I run server. ID Owing 1 -100 (All the same value) 2 -100 3 -100 . . . . . . It has in one column Invoice id and the other owing. One-one relationship as well. sow for example owing value for 1 is 100. Unfortunately, this is where it all goes wrong because throughout column (Owing), it is giving me the owing value for ID=1. I want each ID to give me their owing value. Here is my view.
