  • Why are Win7 IE browers running in IE7 mode?

    On our site we currently have approx. 50% of our IE7 users running Windows 7. However, Win7 was released with IE8 meaning that something is not right. Based on this, we made the assumption that the modern IE browsers enter IE7 compatibility mode on our site. So we placed the "X-UA-Compatible=edge" meta tag on our site in hope to kill off IE7 support. However, after a week, the percentage of IE7 (and IE8) users have gone up for the first time since the start of this year. When looking at the X-UA-Compatible documentation, it is meant to be used for putting your site into an older mode. Is there any other way to make sure that IE doesn't enter compatibility mode? Is there something else we need to look for? And yes, we have so many users on our site that we can't kill off IE7 until it goes down under 2% of unique visitors. EDIT: We use <!doctype html> EDIT2: We haven't been able to reproduce the compatibility mode in our environments either

  • Can't Log Into Ubuntu 12.04

    Yesterday, after turning on Ubuntu, I logged into a Gnome session. A few minutes later, I tried switching to Unity for a change. Unfortunately, the background and my desktop icons loaded, but the system bar and launcher failed to load even after several minutes. Unity had always worked fine for me. I then tried the guest account, and it worked fine on both Unity and Gnome. However, the problem with my account got worse; I couldn't log into any desktop at all anymore. I would type in my password and press enter and it would just sit there doing nothing. The computer no longer responded in any way, so I had to hold the power button and reboot. The same problem happened repeatedly. Earlier today, I tried to get on again. I found that I hadthe same problem, when I tried to log in, the computer no longer locked up, but instead flashed a black screen with theconsole output and what seemed to be an error message before returning to the log in screen. It was to quick for me to read, about 1/4-1/2 second. I'd really appreciate some help as I have some important files that are not backed up yet. I can't transfer the files to a new account, or even make a new account because I tried taking the password off my account so now I can't authenticate from the guest to perform root functions.     When running some of your Windows Azure applications when storage emulator is not configured you may get the following error: "Windows Azure Tools: Failed to initialize Windows Azure storage emulator. Unable to start Development Storage. Failed to start Storage Emulator: the SQL Server instance ‘localhost\SQLExpress’ could not be found.   Please configure the SQL Server instance for Storage Emulator using the ‘DSInit’ utility in the Windows Azure SDK.". Here’s how to solve this problem. You need to run DSInit utility to create database. For Windows Azure SDK 1.6 the location for DSInit utility is: C:\Program Files\Windows Azure Emulator\emulator\devstore By default DSInit expects that your database server is (local)\SQLEXPRESS but you can change it easily. If you have MSSQL instance called SQLEXPRESS then it is enough to just run DSInit. If you need some other instance then run the following command: DSInit /sqlinstance:<instance name> For default instance use “.” as instance name: DSInit /sqlinstance:. You can find more information about sqlinstance and other switches from DSInit documentation. If database was correctly created you should see dialog like this: When storage database is ready you can run your application.

  • How to go about designing an intermediate routing filter program to accept input and forward accordingly?

    My predicament: I designed an app, written in Python, to read my mail and check for messages that contain a certain digital signature. It opens these and looks for keywords. If the message contains these keywords, certain related functions area executed on the computer. It is a way I can control my computer from my cell phone without being there. I am still in the beginning stages and it can only currently remotely open and close applications/processes. The obvious issue is security risks. I hoped to spearhead that by requiring and checking for that digital signature. However, my issue comes when I'd like to make this program usable by multiple users. The idea is that the user will send keywords: username and password, for instance, to log into their personal email account and send messages to it to be parsed. Please ignore the security implications of sending non-encoded passwords through email. (Though if you could help me on that part I'd much appreciate it as well, but currently, that is not the scope of my question.) My issue is designing an intermediary process that will take an email/password to read an email and scan for those keywords. The issue is, that the program has to be accessing an email to read the email for the username/password! I have got myself into a loop and cannot figure out how to have this required intermediary program. I could just create an arbitrary email account and have that check for login-creds, but is there a better way of doing this than that? Also, is there a better way of communicating with a computer remotely than this? Especially if the computer is not a server and is behind a router with only a subnet ip? If I am asking this question in the wrong place, I deeply apologize. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • How do I create the "Gnome-Desktop-Item-Edit" program's launch icon with root privileges and more?

    I personally dont prefer running commands in terminal to achieve a task and prefer apps to execute the job. Creating launcher for apps is one such command where I prefer the gnome-desktop-item-edit application for creating launchers. If the gnome package is installed, just searching "create launcher" opens the app. But, it doesnt serve any purpose, because for starters the application cannot create launchers for various apps without root permission and the location where the apps have to be created. Usually the launcher apps with root permission can be created at /usr/share/applications and without root permission at /.local/share/applications. I dont prefer the latter location as it is vulnerable to deletion. Hence, in order to create the launchers through gnome with root, everytime I am forced to open this through terminal using the below command! $ sudo gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/.local/share/applications --create-new I dont want to open terminal everytime I want to create an application launcher on unity! I am able to lock the "Create Launcher" App in the Launcher, but not with root privileges So I want to be able to create the "Create Launcher" app shortcut on unity with default root privileges and for the app to create the launchers at usr/share/applications by default! Please help! P.S. I dont have enough rep points to add screenshots to help with the question!

  • What makes you look like a bad developer (ie a hacker) [on hold]

    This comes from a lot of people about me, so I have to look at myself. So I would wonder what make one a bad developer (ie a hacker). These are a few things about me I used IDE intensively, all features, you name it: auto-completion, refactoring, quick fixes, open type, view hierarchy, API documentation, etcc When I deal with writing code for a project in domain I am not used to (I can't have fluency in this, this is new), I only have a very rough high level ideas. I don't use the standard modeling diagrams for early detail planning. Unorthodox diagrams that I invented when I need to draw the design in details. I don't use UML or similar, I find them not enough. I divide the sorts of diagram I drew into 3 types. Very high level diagrams which probably can be understood by almost anybody. Data entity diagram used for modeling data objects only (like ER diagrams and tree for inheritances and composition). Action diagrams for agents/classes and their interactions on data objects they contain. Constantly changing the interface (public methods) between interacting agents/classes if the need arises. I am more refrained when the interface and the module have matured Write initial concept code in a quick hackie way just so that the module works in the general cases so that I can play around with it. The module will be re-factored intensively after playing around so I could see more corner cases that I couldn't or (wouldn't want) anticipate before writing code. Using JUnit for integration-like test by using TestSuite class and ordering Unit test classes in the suite Using debugger almost anytime there is a problem instead of reading the code Constantly search on the internet for how to do some thing with some library that I haven't used a lot. So judgment, am I a bad developer? a hacker? Put in other words, to make sure this is not considered off-topic: - Is this bad practice to make your code too agile during incubating/prototyping phase of software development - Is it bad practice to use JUnit for integration testing, (I know there are other framework for integration testing, but those frameworks are for a specific products, not general)

  • Location Change Salary Differences [closed]

    DISCLAIMER: I know that this might be a "regional" question but I'm also asking for help as far as what resources to use to determine my decision. I'm currently talking to a recruiter for a game developer in the SF Bay area. I work in a relatively low-cost area in the south. I really want to get into game development but my current career is general web development. I'm very interested in taking the job, but my concern is that the amount they're willing to pay might be a relative pay cut. Here are some factors: It's not an entry-level position, the title is Senior Software Engineer. I have 5+ years of experience. The calculators online tell me that I should be expecting around 2x my current pay rate(http://www.bestplaces.net/col/). My current pay is in the mid $60k/yr, so that's like 120-130k. The recruiter told me at my experience level I can expect about $90-100/yr, and that those cost of living calculators were way off. The benefits will definitely be better, it's much larger company (help with commuting, catered meals, etc). But is the recruiter trying to give me a snow job on the pay scale, or is that a reasonable change from a smallish town in the south to somewhere in the SF bay area? How can I find this out? Glassdoor and Payscale seem to say "senior software developers" in that area make around 110 in median salary, but Payscale says it's closer to $135k, that range seems pretty large.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Full Screen without Unity Hub

    I couldn't find an answer for this, so I thought I would try here. My problem is, I have some games on Wine that play in full screen mode but I can't really get them in full screen mode. When they start up, they end up with the GUI's "HUD" overlapping the game which is really annoying and well kills the option to play the game. This has also happened in a few of my Linux programs as well. While I wrote its a problem with Unity, it really isn't limited to this though. I've done full screen mode on Unity and had the Unity side bar and top menu overlap, I've used Gnome and had the same issue happen, Gnome menu is in the top, Cinnamon had the same issue. Sometimes if I Alt-Tab out of it and back into the program it MIGHT remove the HUD but that doesn't always work, and lets face it, full screen mode that is killed by the GUI just isn't something that can really be ignored. Any suggestions or help would be highly welcomed.   • Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

    Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request.   • How to fix GRUB on dualboot with Windows7 and Ubuntu?

    I am a relatively recent user of Linux. I had several releases of Ubuntu installed on my laptop working in dual-boot and never had any issues. Recently, I installed openSUSE because I thought it would be necessary for an assignment at my university. It turns out it wasn't so I returned to Ubuntu and decided to burn the new .iso to a CD and install it. The problem is that during installation process I almost for sure messed up with the partitions and now, whenever I tried to load Windows 7, it will tells me that a required device is inaccessible. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu again and now all I get is that I am redirected to the GRUB menu without any warnings. I tried creating a Windows Recovery Disk but it gives me Unexpected I/O error. I suspect it is because it was downloaded from the Internet and maybe some files weren't there. I tried everything without success, so I decided to ask here, in the hope I can receive some help and also learn how to help others with it in the future. Here it is my boot info summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1344990/ Also, I might add, that on the boot-repair advanced options, the box repair Windows boot files is "locked", so I can't check it. EDIT: Apparentely, the box is locked, because, from what I understood after reading the boot-repair information, everything is fine with my windows boot-files... I still need some guidance though

  • Lubuntu 12.10: Icon Display Problems

    First off, I would like to let you know that I am new to Linux. I finally decided to give it a try and my first project was installing Lubuntu on an old PC and using it for a media server for my PS3. So, one thing that I noticed right away is that my icons for applications, files, folders, etc...are not visible. If I move my mouse over the name of the application or file (It only works if I move the mouse up from the bottom of the name) then the icon will appear, but if I move my mouse back over any other place on the file the icon will disappear again. Also, if I open a folder sometimes an icon or two will be displayed but the rest won't, and like I said before if I move my mouse over the top of the application or file the icon will disappear. Is there any way to fix this? Is this normal? Or could it be a problem with my hardware? I never had this issue when I was running the last OS (Windows XP). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Remember, I am new to Linux so a thorough explanation would be helpful. Also, if there are any tips, tricks, references, or recommendations any of you have to help me jump in and become more familiar with using Linux that would be great! I'm very interested in taking advantage of the power Linux has. Currently I am studying computer programming so maybe one day I will be able to develop my own Linux distribution.

  • Win8 x64 Laptop (Samsung) unable to boot after installing Ubuntu

    I posted here a while back and no one was able to help me so I am going to try to explain my problem better. I have a Samsung series 7 Ultrabook and I connected a USB optical drive with an Ubuntu 14.04 installation disc. I did not set or change any of my partitions, however, as I mainly wanted to just be able to boot from the disc and fool around with Ubuntu. Upon restarting my computer I get a blue-screen message saying: Recovery Your PC needs to be repiared The Boot configuration date file is missing some required information. File: \BCD Error Code: 0xc000000d You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installing media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer. However I am never given the option to even try to boot to anything. When I turn my computer on the optical drive spins and then after a moment or two comes to a halt. I turned off safeboot and switched it to CSM (I believe that is what it is called) mode, and that makes it so when I turn my computer on it takes me to a Windows Recovery screen. I am able to change the date I want to recover and view all the applications installed, however upon recovering Windows says "All boot options are tried. Press key to recover with factory image using Recovery or any other keys for next boot loop iteration." It seems to be stuck in a loop. Can someone please help me?! I'm so confused and nothing is working!

    im facing a problem. after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using boot from CD, when reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. i directly log in to my Windows 7. before this im having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken. after tick [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, and stuck again at choosing the partition. so i had done 2 partitions for ubuntu, 1 partition for ubuntu ( ext3, mount /) and the other 1 for swap. then i can proceed until finished the installation. and after the system want to reboot. it take some times and just stuck at the screen doing nothing. not rebooting at all. i force to shutdown then restart again then directly go into windows 7 without boot option. in win7 the partitions for ubuntu is gone. i had tried the boot-repair thing and still doesn't help. it just show up the _ (terminal thing i guess). i typed boot repair and still the same. im using acer aspire 4736z. please anybody help me with this issue.

  • Looking for algorithms regarding scaling and moving

    I've been bashing my head for the past couple of weeks trying to find algorithms that would help me accomplish, on first look very easy task. So, I got this one object currently made out of 5 cuboids (2 sides, 1 top, 1 bottom, 1 back), this is just for an example, later on there will be whole range of different set ups. I have included three pictures of this object(as said this is just for an example). Now, the thing is when the user scales the whole object this is what should happen: X scale: top and bottom cuboids should get scaled by a scale factor, sides should get moved so they are positioned just like they were before(in this case at both ends of top and bottom cuboids), back should get scaled so it fits like before(if I simply scale it by a scale factor it will leave gaps on each side). Y scale: sides should get scaled by a scale factor, top and bottom cuboid should get moved, and back should also get scaled. Z scale: sides, top and bottom cuboids should get scaled, back should get moved.   • Hosting woes

    Unfortunately quite a few people have noticed our recent hosting problems, but if you are reading this they should all be over, so please accept our apologies. Our former web host decided migrate to a new platform, it had all sorts or great features, but on reflection hosting wasn’t one of them. We knew it was coming, and had even been proactive and requested several dates on their migration control panel so I could be around to check it afterwards. The dates came and went without anything happening, so we sat back and carried on on for a couple of months thinking they’d get back to us when they were ready. Then out of the blue I get an email saying it has happened! Now this is what I call timing, I had client work to complete, a 50 minute presentation to write and there was a little conference called SQLBits that I help organise at the end of the week, and then our hosting provider decides to migrate our sites. Unfortunately they only migrated parts of the sites, they forgot things like the database for SQLDTS. The database eventually appeared, but the data didn’t. Then the data pitched up but without the stored procedures. I was even asked if I could perform a backup and send it to them, as they were getting timeout errors. Never mind the issues of performing a native backup on a hosted server, whilst I could have done something, the question actually left me speechless. So you cannot access your own SQL server and you expect me to be able to help? This site was there, but hadn’t been set as an IIS application so all path references were wrong which meant no CSS and all the internal navigation and links were wrong. The new improved hosting platform Control Panel didn't appear to like setting applications. It said it would, you’d have to wait 2 hours of course, then just decided not to bother after all. So needless to say after a very successful SQLBits I focused my attention on finding a new web host, and here we are again. Sorry it took so long.

  • WiFi problems on several Ubuntu installations

    Okay this is the first time I have ever had to ask a question as usually the Ubuntu community have answered everything already but on this occasion there are many people asking for the answer but not one good solution has become available so far so someone please help or I will have to install Windows on my sons and my girlfriends PCs and that would be a disaster as I am trying to help convince people to move from Windows. I installed 12.04 on three computers on the same day. Dell Inspiron (Works Perfect) Toshiba Satellite Home built Desktop The Dell works perfect but the other two either keep losing connection to the wireless Internet and even when they are connected they stop connecting to web sites, for some reason it searches Google fine but will not connect to web sites when a link is clicked. So far people have recommended in other forums: Removing network manager and installing wicd (didn't solve it) Changing the MTU in the wireless settings (didn't solve it) All sorts of messing about with Firefox settings (this doesn't solve it and even if it did this would leave most average PC users scratching their heads and wishing they had stuck to windows) The problem exists on two very different machines and different wireless cards so I doubt its a driver or hardware issue, also many other Ubuntu users are having the same problem with a vast array of different machines and wireless cards. Can someone please give a good solution to this as its going to turn a lot of people away from Ubuntu if they cannot get this sorted. I would give some PC specs but the two machines are vastly different and the other people complaining of this problem also have very different systems all showing the same problem.

  • How to build an API on top of an existing Rails app with NodeJs and what architecture to use?

    The explanation I was recently hired by a company that has an old RoR 2.3 application with more than 100k users, a strong SEO strategy with more than 170k indexed urls, native android and ios applications and other custom-made mobile and web applications that rely on a not so good API from the same RoR app. They recently merged with a company from another country as an strategy to grow the business and the profit. They have almost the same stats, a similar strategy and mobile apps. We have just decided that we need to merge the data from both companies and to start a new app from scratch since the RoR app is to old and heavily patched and the app from the other company was built with a custom PHP framework without any documentation. The only good news is that both databases are in MySQL and have a similar structure. The challenge I need to build a new version that: can handle a lot of traffic, preserves the SEO strategies of both companies, serve 2 different domains, and have a strong API that can support legacy mobile apps from both companies and be ready for a new set of native apps. I want to use RoR 3.2 for the main web apps and NodeJs with a Restful API. I know that I need to be very careful with the mobile apps and handle multiple versions of the API. I also think that I need to create a service that can handle a lot IO request since the apps is heavily used to create orders for restaurants at a certain time of the day. The questions With all this in mind: What type of architecture do you recommend me to follow? What gems or node packages do you think will work the best? How do I build a new rails app and keep using the same database structure? Should I use NodeJS to build an API or just build a new service with Ruby? I know that I'm asking to much from you guys, but please help me by answering any topic that you can or by pointing me on the right direction.   • Compiz problems in Ubuntu 12.10

    I have installed ubuntu 12.10 x64 on my notebook and I wanted to make a little customization in the UI, so i downloaded Compiz Settings Manager and opened it up. Once I opened it up, I found out that in the compiz are not all those settings and animations (that I could apply like on the photos, videos etc.) so I reinstalled it few times. Once I get bored with the reinstalling I checked one field in there and Ubuntu (OS) started to get "lagged" (Dash get hid, OS started to do not respond very well). So please, can anyone help me? How can I customize my ubuntu without get lagged and with all the animations that have to be available in the compiz? Thanks to all! thank you! It seems that it helped to fix the Dash-hide problem, but I still do not have all the animations and features that have to be in the Compiz (program). Can you help me with this too please? Thanks a lot!

    During my tenure at the last company, I didn't let my career stagnate as others have and as time moved along.When at work or home, spend 10% of your time learning something new about some aspect or segway of your job so that your skills are marketable in case you lose it. From experience let me reinforce that it pays off. It pays off in your current job because of the education received and the competence increase of your skills which applied will bring recognition.In these days and times, loyalty to a company is truly at an end. However many companies do care about cultivating their employees which creates a brand of loyalty that can't be replaced. Old companies with the Corp. mentality (or because of the corp. mentality) ever decrease their budgets on organizational sections and thereby do a RIF as a matter of business.The mistakes they make during this process can be risky. But who am I, but a lowly ole programmer, to judge risk. If you are laid off, be friendly with your past manager, and based on simple questions and help, give whatever help you can over the phone even though you are under no obligation to do so.It is also quite possible that there are opportunities to make at home with a new company in the future. Just remember that when inquiring about a position, take advantage of the training that is offered, and keep yourself emotionally and educationally fit.Talk soon,foxjazz

  • Ubuntu 13.04 can only work in recovery mode

    I have just updated my 12.10 to 13.04. Everything is updated. But I can only boot to a black screen. I mean after the GRUB interface and purple screen. And I can hear the voice of the password interface. But it is only the black screen. It all works OK in 12.10. But it can work in the recovery mode. I mean go into the recovery mode and choose resume. And then everything is OK. But when loading kernel, the screen is dirty. I don't know why and I have Googled a lot. But no resolutions works. My graphics card is Intel GMA HD 4000, tested as VESA: Intel® Sandybridge/Ivybridge Graphics. I have been trapped in this for a whole day. I do need help. Hope someone can help me. By the way, the kernel is 3.8.0-19 if it helps.

  • No boot option after installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on Acer Aspire 4736z with Live CD

    I am facing a problem. After installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Live CD, at the reboot there is no boot option to choose the OS. I directly get logged into my Windows 7. Before that i was having an issue with the 'nomodeset' if not mistaken .After ticking [x] on the nomodeset, i can install my Ubuntu, but got stucked again at choosing the partition option. So i did 2 partitions for Ubuntu, 1 partition as ext3 for / and the other 1 for swap. Which enabled to proceed until the finished installation dialogue, and after that system wants to reboot .It takes some time and gets stuck at the screen doing nothing, doesn't reboot at all. I did forced shutdown then rebooted again which directly logs me in windows 7 without boot option. In win7 the partitions for Ubuntu is gone. I tried the boot-repair thing and it doesn't help .It just shows up the _ Blank Cursor (terminal thing i guess). I typed boot repair but still the same result. I am using Acer Aspire 4736z. Please somebody help me with this issue.
