• How popular is C++ for making websites/web applications?

  I don't know why this is question is bugging me, but time after time I come back to the though - why not make websites in C++? So far I know of none (except a rumor about Yahoo). Most use PHP, Java or ASP.NET. Some are built on Ruby or Python, but even those are minorities. At the same time, looking at StackOverflow, it seems that C++ is still a very popular language with many projects written in it. Why not for webpages? So - what do you know about this subject? Are there any websites written in C++? Are there any framewroks/libraries that help doing this? Have YOU ever done it? If yes, did you run into any fundamental problems and would you recommend this to others?

  I'm currently creating a view in Drupal that contains a number of fields. What I want to do is to create an exposed filter that is able to filter duplicate titles. The filter would be a checkbox. • Python - question regarding the concurrent use of `multiprocess`.

  I want to use Python's multiprocessing to do concurrent processing without using locks (locks to me are the opposite of multiprocessing) because I want to build up multiple reports from different resources at the exact same time during a web request (normally takes about 3 seconds but with multiprocessing I can do it in .5 seconds). My problem is that, if I expose such a feature to the web and get 10 users pulling the same report at the same time, I suddenly have 60 interpreters open at the same time (which would crash the system). Is this just the common sense result of using multiprocessing, or is there a trick to get around this potential nightmare? Thanks

• MySQL ALTER TABLE on very large table - is it safe to run it?

  I have a MySQL database with one particular MyISAM table of above 4 million rows. I update this table about once a week with about 2000 new rows. After updating, I then perform the following statement: ALTER TABLE x ORDER BY PK DESC i.e. I order the table in question by the primary key field in descending order. This has not given me any problems on my development machine (Windows with 3GB memory), but, even though 3 times I have tried it successfully on the production Linux server (with 512MB RAM - and achieving the resulted sorted table in about 6 minutes each time), the last time I tried it I had to stop the query after about 30 minutes and rebuild the database from a backup. I have started to wonder whether a 512MB server can cope with that statement (on such a large table) as I have read that a temporary table is created to perform the ALTER TABLE command?! And, if it can be safely run, what should be the expected time for the alteration of the table? Thanks in advance, Tim

• How to improve workflow for creating a Lua-based Wireshark dissector

  I've finally created a Dissector for my UDP protocol in Lua for Wireshark, but the work flow is just horrendous. It consists of editing my custom Lua file in my editor, then double-clicking my example capture file to launch Wireshark to see the changes. If there was an error, Wireshark informs me via dialogs or a red line in the Tree analysis sub-pane. I then re-edit my custom Lua file and then close that Wireshark instance, then double-click my example capture file again. It's like compiling a C file and only seeing one compiler error at a time. Is there a better (faster) way of looking at my changes, without having to restart Wireshark all the time? At the time, I was using Wireshark 1.2.9 for Windows with Lua enabled.

• Organization moving from ASP.NET to WebLogic Portal - training recommendations?

  My organization previously used ASP.NET for web projects. They are now migrating to WebLogic Portal/JEE for all future web projects. My experience as a Lead Developer / Architect is totally with .NET projects. I want to get ramped up on WebLogic/JEE, so I can contribute to future projects. Any training/certification suggestions for WebLogic/JEE, in a 6-month time frame? Assume that I will need to fund my own training, and I am working full time. So, money and time are limited.

• Why do external Java libraries paths have to be refreshed in eclipse between starts?

  For my school projects, I use the joda-time API for generating timestamps that are used for file names and logging. Getting eclipse to recognize the library is no problem. However, when I start eclipse between reboots, I get the red X in the project tree because the external API cannot be found, even though the file path has not changed. So each time, I have to go to the Libraries tab in Build Path to re-target the API. Frankly, this is getting to be a PIMA. So is there any way to have the path be permanent, so I don't have to do the Build Path rigmarole all the time?

• What is the best way to migrate documents into Sharepoint (MOSS) 2007?

  I'm working with a customer that needs to migrate documents from their current document management system (not Sharepoint) into Sharepoint MOSS 2007 retaining document history and metadata. I've written a proof of concept using the Sharepoint web services and that looks promising, but the snag so far seems to be programmatically setting the created date/time and user. The webservices allow the fields to be set but implicitly override them to be the currently logged in user + date/time. For obvious reasons, I need to be able to keep the original created date/time and user on migration. Does anyone know the best way to approach this problem?

  This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with a numeric argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.) • SQL Server 2000 DTS Package Failing with "The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified"

  I have inherited a SQL Server 2000 DTS package that migrates data from SQL Server to Oracle. This package moves about 20 tables' data to Oracle every night with no transformations, and it is then transformed by a set of SPs and used by a GIS application. Twice this week, during the migration between SQL Server and Oracle, the package has failed with "The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified". It has failed on a different table each time, though. Each time it's failed, we've rerun the process the next morning and it has worked. Because the process works the second time it's run, it makes me think the data is being changed by someone or something between the initial failure and our successful second run. I would like to change the DTS package to log the failing rows in a text document so we can compare them later. Can someone help me with that? I can't seem to figure that part out. Scott

• What is the simplest method to fill the area under a geom_freqpoly line?

  The x-axis is time broken up into time intervals. There is an interval column in the data frame that specifies the time for each row. The column is a factor, where each interval is a different factor level. Plotting a histogram or line using geom_histogram and geom_freqpoly works great, but I'd like to have a line, like that provided by geom_freqpoly, with the area filled. Currently I'm using geom_freqpoly like this: ggplot(quake.data, aes(interval, fill=tweet.type)) + geom_freqpoly(aes(group = tweet.type, colour = tweet.type)) + opts(axis.text.x=theme_text(angle=-60, hjust=0, size = 6)) I would prefer to have a filled area, such as provided by geom_density, but without smoothing the line: UPDATE: The geom_area has been suggested, is there any way to use a ggplot2-generated statistic, such as ..count.., for the geom_area's y-values? Or, does the count aggregation need to occur prior to using ggplot2?

  I am developing a client server application (TCP) in Linux using C++. I want to send more than 65,000 bytes at the same time. In TCP, the maximum packet size is 65,635 bytes only. How can I send the entire bytes without loss? My apologies if I come off as being extremely lazy but I need to make efficient use of my time and make sure am not just swallowing any garbage of the web. Therefore I am looking for the best and most informative and with a fair bit of detail for the Reflection chapter in .Net. Reflection is something that comes up time and time again and I want to extend my reading from what I know already from the official 70-536 book. I'm not a big fan of MSDN but at the moment that's al I'm using. Anyone got any other good published reading material off the inter web that can help revision for the entrance exam??? • SSIS process files from folder

  Background: I've a folder that gets pumped with files continuously. My SSIS package needs to process the files and delete them. The SSIS package is scheduled to run once every minute. I'm picking up the files in ascending order of file creation time. I'm building an array of files and then processing-deleting them one at a time. Problem: If an instance of my package takes longer than one minute to run, the next instance of the SSIS package will pick up some of the files the previous instance has in its buffer. By the time the second instance of teh package gets around to processing a file, it may already have been deleted by the first instance, creating an exception condition. I was wondering whether there was a way to avoid the exception condition. Thanks.

• XNA or C# Pop-up progress bar for the LoadContent() method

  Hey people, We wrote a small game using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio 3.1. The LoadContent() takes a long time because, other than loading models, and config files, we're also running some one-time (per run) terrain analysis. We are not C# or XNA programmers... we're Java programmers, and want to be able to give the user some feedback that the system is loading. Preferably, this will be through a simple pop-up with a progress bar that will say something simple like "loading please wait". The progress bar doesn't have to be a 0 to 1 progress bar, it can instead be one of those 'back and forth' progress bars. I was hoping for some quick copy-paste ready code to just do that - as it is not a central piece of our project, nor do we have a need to delve into too much documentation. • Does MVC replace traditional manually created UI, BLL, DAL ?

  I'm use to creating the UI, BLL, DAL by hand (some times i've used LINQ-SQL or SubSonic for the DAL). I've done several small projects using MVC since it's release. On these projects i've still continued to write a BLL and DAL by hand and then incorporate those into the MVC's models/controllers. Looking to optimize my time on projects this seems like over kill and a potential waste of time. My question is: Would it be acceptable to roll a DAL such as SubSonic and directly use it in the Models/Controllers of my MVC web app? Now the models & controllers would act as the BLL. I just see this as a major time savor to not have to worry about another tier. (Agree ? "Please state way" : "Make argument")

• Generating Running Sum of Ratings in SQL

  I have a rating table. It boils down to: rating_value created +2 april 3rd -5 april 20th So, every time someone gets rated, I track that rating event in the database. I want to generate a rating history/time graph where the rating is the sum of all ratings up to that point in time on a graph. I.E. A person's rating on April 5th might be select sum(rating_value) from ratings where created <= april 5th The only problem with this approach is I have to run this day by day across the interval I'm interested in. Is there some trick to generating a running total using this sort of data? Otherwise, I'm thinking the best approach is to create a denormalized "rating history" table alongside the individual ratings.

• VS2005 project has dependency that is not built

  I have VS2005 solution that contains many projects and dependencies (some C++, some C#) - in the past it compiled successfully. when I rebuild all the solution it fails on a project claiming dll is missing (dll that was needed to built before according to dependency). the thing is that from time to time it fails on random project (not all the time the same project). I'm not sure it is meaningful but I see in output console Deleting intermediate and output files for project doesn't VS2005 go according to "Project Build Order" and ReBuild every project starting with its dependencies?

  I don't want for my current ModifeidDateTime to be machine time already server time. Every time I want to update or add a person to my datebase on SQL Server 2008 I want to fill ModifiedDateTime filed. It's not like I can change update query as with data adapter command when I work with dataset and to define for my ModifiedDateTime filed to be =GetDate(). I created stored function to retutn me a value of GetDate() method, but I have a problem to import procedure which returns values as int, string ... or no value at all, already just entity values as Person for example in my case. Why is that? Anyway, It would be of great help if you can provide me any solution that works to retrieve DateTime value from server.

I have a Question in the forum which suggest how to merge two wav file i.e add the contents of one wav file at certain offset,but i want to join two wav file at the end of each other... And also i had a prob playing the my own wav file,using winsound module..I was able to play the sound but using the time.sleep for certain time before playin any windows sound,disadvantage wit this is if i wanted to play a sound longer thn time.sleep(N),N sec also,the windows sound wil jst overlap after N sec play the winsound nd stop.. • System.Interactive: Difference between Memoize() and MemoizeAll()?

  In System.Interactive.dll (v1.0.2521.0) from Reactive Extensions, EnumerableEx has both a Memoize method and a MemoizeAll method. The API documentation is identical for both of them: Creates an enumerable that enumerates the original enumerable only once and caches its results. However, these methods are clearly not identical. If I use Memoize, my enumerable has values the first time I enumerate it, and seems to be empty the second time. If I use MemoizeAll then I get the behavior I would expect from the description of either method - I can enumerate the result as many times as I want and get the same results each time, but the source is only enumerated once. Can anyone tell me what the intended difference between these methods is? What is the use-case for Memoize? It seems like a fairly useless method with really confusing documentation.
