  I want to understand how to implement an announcement/info box system that displays a box for the user with information. The user can do nothing or close the box, but then it will never be seen again. E.g. Facebook home page. Box asking for Translators. if you leave it then its always there. But if you close it, it never appears again. Does this mean that a Boolean value needs to be used and checked for announcement/info boxes? I'm looking for a pseudo way with database tables to do this?

It works fine, but the Block class has an method, called draw: this.draw = function (ctx){ if(ctx){ var colors = ['#FF0000','#FFFF00','#0000FF','#00FF00'], color = Math.round(Math.random() * colors.length-1); ctx.fillStyle = colors[color]; ctx.fillRect(this.x,this.y,this.width,this.height); } }; It was working before I moved it into the Block class, but now it draws nothing. This is the code that calls draw: render: function(ctx){ each(this.blocks,function(index){ this[index].draw(ctx); }); } The context comes from the html page, from the main canvas.

  Hello We have a ASP .Net application whereby we use Log4Net to log details within the app - nothing new there - and the rolling log filenames are in the usual format of: rolling-log.txt rolling-log.txt.1 rolling-log.txt.2 etc. A each user of the application adds to the logfile, the logfile can be difficult to read for a specific user's case and so, we'd like to modify the config file somehow to record the user's log details individually, each writing to a specific file, e.g. <applicationId>rolling-log.txt <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.1 <applicationId>rolling-log.txt.2 etc. where is each user's unique application Id, made up of a five digit number, e.g. 12345rolling-log.txt Any ideas on the best way to implement this, assuming that it's possible?   I've got a rootViewController that, at one point, displays a peoplePickerNavigationController. I'm trying to push a second view controller when my user selects a specific contact property, like so: -(BOOL)peoplePickerNavigationController:(ABPeoplePickerNavigationController *)picker shouldContinueAfterSelectingPerson:(ABPersonRef)person property:(ABPropertyID)property identifier:(ABMultiValueIdentifier)identifier { RuleBuilder *ruleBuilder = [[RuleBuilder alloc] initWithNibName:@"RuleBuilder" bundle:nil]; [self pushModalViewController:ruleBuilder animated:YES]; [ruleBuilder release]; return NO; } This compiles just fine, but when I run the code in the simulator and run through the peoplePicker, nothing happens when I select a contact property. On a whim, I added a [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; just before [ruleBuilder release]; and that dismisses the peoplePicker, but otherwise has no effect on my missing ruleBuilder. Any ideas?

  From MSDN (link): The type PrintDocumentImageableArea has no public constructor. Hence, the variable documentImageableArea must be declared and assigned to Nothing and only then passed to the method. This method displays a PrintDialog requiring input from the user. After the user has selected a printer, paper size, and orientation and closed the dialog, documentImageableArea points to an actual object and its properties are initialized. I have my custom print dialog and need to get the PrintDocumentImageableArea of a given PrintQueue and PrintTicket! (I need the margin's I need to apply) From what I can gather it is quite common for anything but the most basic applications to use their own custom print dialog. There must be a way to get to this information!? Any input appreciated!

In this posting I will show you how to send vCards out as response to ASP.NET MVC request. We need three things: some vCard class, vCard action result, controller method to test vCard action result. Everything is very simple, let’s get hands on. vCard class As first thing we need vCard class. Last year I introduced vCard class that supports also images. Let’s take this class because it is easy to use and some dirty work is already done for us. NB! Take a look at ASP.NET example in the blog posting referred above. • Semi-transparent PNG Image on transparent Form

  Hello, I have a problem dealing with transparent images on transparent Forms. I have been trying and looking for a solution but nothing useful came up. The problem is: I have a Form, this Form has a Panel and the Panel has a PictureBox. Form and Panel are transparent. Now, if the image of the PictureBox has no semi-transparent it works. But if there is a gradient transparency then the "transparent color" is shown. I need the Panel and the PictureBox, so the PerPixelAlpha does not apply for this case. The Form will also have more Controls that should be visible and non transparent (just the PNG image should be transparent). The image below shows: [Left] When the Panel is not transparent. • Does Test Driven Development (TDD) improve Quality and Correctness? (Part 1)

  Since the dawn of the computer age, various methodologies have been introduced to improve quality and reduce cost. In this posting, I will by sharing my experiences with Test Driven Development; both its benefits and limitations. To start this topic, we need to agree on what TDD is. The first is to define each of the three words as used in this context. Test - An item or action which measures something in some quantifiable form. Driven - The primary motivation or focus of a series of activities (process) Development - All phases of a software project/product from concept through delivery. The above are very simple definitions that result in the following: "TDD is a process where the primary focus is on measuring and quantifying all aspects of the creation of a (software) product." There are many places where TDD is used outside of software development, even though it is not known by this name. Consider the (conventional) education process that most of us grew up on. The focus was to get the best grades as measured by different tests. Many of these tests measured rote memorization and not understanding of the subject matter. The result of this that many people graduated with high scores but without "quality and correctness" in their ability to utilize the subject matter (of course, the flip side is true where certain people DID understand the material but were not very good at taking this type of test). Returning to software development, let us look at some common scenarios. While these items are generally applicable regardless of platform, language and tools; the remainder of this post will utilize Microsoft Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server (TFS) for examples. It should be realized that everyone does at least some aspect of TDD. At the most rudimentary level, getting a program to compile involves a "pass/fail" measurement (is the syntax valid) that drives their ability to proceed further (run the program). Other developers may create "Unit Tests" in the belief that having a test for every method/property of a class and good code coverage is the goal of TDD. These items may be helpful and even important, but really only address a small aspect of the overall effort. To see TDD in a bigger view, lets identify the various activities that are part of the Software Development LifeCycle. These are going to be presented in a Waterfall style for simplicity, but each item also occurs within Iterative methodologies such as Agile/Scrum. the key ones here are: Requirements Gathering Architecture Design Implementation Quality Assurance Can each of these items be subjected to a process which establishes metrics (quantified metrics) that reflect both the quality and correctness of each item? It should be clear that conventional Unit Tests do not apply to all of these items; at best they can verify that a local aspect (e.g. a Class/Method) of implementation matches the (test writers perspective of) the appropriate design document. So what can we do? For each of area, the goal is to create tests that are quantifiable and durable. The ability to quantify the measurements (beyond a simple pass/fail) is critical to tracking progress(eventually measuring the level of success that has been achieved) and for providing clear information on what items need to be addressed (along with the appropriate time to address them - in varying levels of detail) . Durability is important so that the test can be reapplied (ideally in an automated fashion) over the entire cycle. Returning for a moment back to our "education example", one must also be careful of how the tests are organized and how the measurements are taken. If a test is in a multiple choice format, there is a significant statistical probability that a correct answer might be the result of a random guess. Also, in many situations, having the student simply provide a final answer can obscure many important elements. For example, on a math test, having the student simply provide a numeric answer (rather than showing the methodology) may result in a complete mismatch between the process and the result. It is hard to determine which is worse: The student who makes a simple arithmetric error at one step of a long process (resulting in a wrong answer) or The student who (without providing the "workflow") uses a completely invalid approach, yet still comes up with the right number. The "Wrong Process"/"Right Answer" is probably the single biggest problem in software development. Even very simple items can suffer from this. As an example consider the following code for a "straight line" calculation....Is it correct? (for Integral Points)         int Solve(int m, int b, int x) { return m * x + b; }   Most people would respond "Yes". But let's take the question one step further... Is it correct for all possible values of m,b,x??? (no fair if you cheated by being focused on the bolded text!)  Without additional information regarding constrains on "the possible values of m,b,x" the answer must be NO, there is the risk of overflow/wraparound that will produce an incorrect result! To properly answer this question (i.e. Test the Code), one MUST be able to backtrack from the implementation through the design, and architecture all the way back to the requirements. And the requirement itself must be tested against the stakeholder(s). It is only when the bounding conditions are defined that it is possible to determine if the code is "Correct" and has "Quality". Yet, how many of us (myself included) have written such code without even thinking about it. In many canses we (think we) "know" what the bounds are, and that the code will be correct. As we all know, requirements change, "code reuse" causes implementations to be applied to different scenarios, etc. This leads directly to the types of system failures that plague so many projects. This approach to TDD is much more holistic than ones which start by focusing on the details. The fundamental concepts still apply: Each item should be tested. The test should be defined/implemented before (or concurrent with) the definition/implementation of the actual item. We also add concepts that expand the scope and alter the style by recognizing: There are many things beside "lines of code" that benefit from testing (measuring/evaluating in a formal way) Correctness and Quality can not be solely measured by "correct results" In the future parts, we will examine in greater detail some of the techniques that can be applied to each of these areas....

• Is preg_match safe enaught in input satinization?

  Im building a new web-app, LAMP environment... im wondering if preg_match can be trusted for user's input validation (+ prepared stmt, of course) for all the text-based fields (aka not html fields; phone, name, surname, etc..). • Unique SMS sender id?

  Hello, I want to build an app that send SMS to people. However, I want my users to know that the SMS comes from the app and nothing else so they can't fake it. Is there a way to guarantee that the sender ID is unique to my app? It seems that sending a SMS by phone is with a unique SENDER ID for each phone number. But, from what I read, I don't think it is the case when sending a SMS through a web gateway. Is this correct? I am not an expert in mobile phone security. Of course, I am willing to pay the price for a unique sender id, if such thing is possible. Regards, Pascal

• Taking video from video camera and displaying it with MPMoviePlayerController IPhone SDK

  Has anyone tried taking a video from the camera and then using the video player provided to play it? When you take the video in portrait mode, sometimes the movie will play (when the player puts it in landscape mode) and when it puts it in portrait mode you cannot view the movie all you hear is sound,sometimes in landscape mode is flickers and does not play right, has anyone encountered this and found a way to fix it? • Form for Telerik RadRibbonBar?

  I got the Telerik RadRibbonBar for free with the Express edition of vb a while back, but it did not come with any sort of form. It also, unfortunately, has the control buttons there automatically. How would I create a form which is resizable, and works like a standard winform, but doesn't have the top bar? I tried: FormBorderStyle = Sizable Text = Nothing ControlBox = False Unfortunately, when you maximize the window, it goes in front of the taskbar...and it has an ugly border when it isn't maximized. How can I: Change border color? Make it so it does not go in front of the taskbar? Thanks for the help! I'm surprised there is not some sort of form already made for this.

  I'm thinking about rewriting an MS Access db I wrote years ago into a stand-alone Python app. Other than a college class called "Intro to C++" (console only, with OOP concepts) and the Access db itself, I have no experience, so I need to ask if the basis for my decision to go with Python is correct. Is it true that: 1) Python is relatively easy to pick up? 2) Python apps can run as "portable" (ie from one directory, no registry needs, nothing needs to be pre-installed on a Windows PC) as long as I use an embedded db?

• Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

  I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

• What can i do about an ObjectDisposedException in a dll i cannot access?

  Hey guys, I'm using a dll to monitor calls (Atapi.dll). Sometimes when events occur, there's an ObjectDisposedException. This seems to be random, i don't know what causes it. I can't debug it and i don't have the source code to it. The events that cause the exception are call events (conencting calls) through Tapi 2.0. It does not causes my app to crash. If i press on the continue button of the window visual studio is generating, the app continues ignoring the exception, but i'd rather not see it happening. I tried catching all code (not much) i have writting, but nothing catches it, and it also says i cannot debug it, because it is thrown in the dll. Does anyone have any idea how to solve or get pass this obstacle? Thanks in advance.

• Python: Pretty printing a xml file directly from a tar.gz package

  This is the first Python script I've tried to create. I'm reading a xml file from a tar.gz package and then I want to pretty print it. However I can't seem to turn it from a file-like object to a string. I've tried to do it a few different ways including str(), tostring(), etc but nothing is working for me. • Minimum permissions to COM Object to Instantiate running as LocalService

  I'm writing a .NET Service that creates a COM object. If I run the Service as the Logged on user (everything is fine). If I run the Service as LocalSystem, everything is fine. If I run the Service as LocalService, then I get an AccessDeniedException when trying to instantiate the COM Object.
