• How to update widgets from a service?

  I have a background service that can be configured to perform some action every x minutes. I want to implement a widget that gets updated every time my service performs that action. However, I can't get the onUpdate method of my AppWidgetProvider called in any way, except when adding a widget to the homescreen. I tried sending APPWIDGET_UPDATE intents but onUpdate did not get called although the AppWidgetProvider did receive the intent since the onReceive method was called. Is there any way I can trigger widget updates from a service?

• Very strange form behaviour

  I can't work this out. One minute it was working fine and now it's not and I can't see what's changed!! My problem is simply submitting a username and password for a login function. The form method is set to "post" but for some reason no data is getting through. If I dump $_REQUEST or $_POST they return empty. I know the form is submitting because if I change the method to "get" I receive the data as expected. Can anyone think of any reason why "get" would work when "post" isn't?!?!? If it's relevant, I'm using the codeigniter framework.

  Hi. I am creating a portfolio page for m personal site. I have a slider with approx 20 anchors that link to projects I have worked on, each one contains a client logo that when clicked should load some html content then fade that content into a container div on the same page. I have been advised to use the JQuery method load() which seems straight forward. The question I have is do I have to repeat the following code for each of the 20 anchors as the url is different for each one or is there a more efficient way? $('a#project1').click(function() { $('#work').load('ajax/project1.html'); } Also would I have to use the unload() method first to ensure the div I am loading into is empty? I'm currently working on a clustered WLI environment which comprehends 3 servers: 1 admin server ("AdminServer") and 2 managed servers ("mn1" and "mn2") grouped as a cluster, as follows: Architecture diagram: http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4112/clusterdiagram.jpg I've developed a JPD process to execute some scheduled tasks, invoked using a Message Broker. I've deployed this project into a single-server WLI domain (with AdminServer only) and it works as expected: the JPD process is invoked (I've configured a Timer Event Generator instance to start it up). • Session state provider and global.asax not interacting properly?

  I'm experimenting with creating a crude, proof-of-concept session state store provider in ASP.Net. But I've got a problem and I'm not sure what to do about it. The website works properly when using the InProc provider. The Session_Start in global.asax is called on session creation as it should. But not if I implement my own provider. The Session_Start method from global.asax isn't being called at all if a new session is being created (that is, I delete the session state file).   A panel contains two labels which are generated by mouse clicks on the panel. I want to connect these two labels by drawing a line between them probably by dragging the mouse pointer from one label to another. There are two events here - one is clicking on the panel to generate the labels and the second is connecting these two labels (mouse pressed, mouse dragged and mouse released events). Both these event need to call the repaint() method but for different purposes. But there can be only one paint() method. The problem is when I connect these two labels, the line comes up but the rest of the components on the panel disappear.

• Invalidating session before iPhone application quits

  Hello I would like to tell the server to invalidate an ongoing session when the user quits the iPhone application. In the app delegate, I send a request to the server in the (void)applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication *)application method. I am not waiting for a server answer, I just want to send the request and quit. However I cant see any packet leaving the application. The same code in another place works fine. Session has a limited duration anyway and the server will invalidate it after a while, but I would prefer to do it nicely when leaving application. Is it normal that no NSURLConnection can be established from the applicationWillTerminate method ? Thank you.

• Why is the proper "respond_to" format not getting called?

  Hi All, I'm having a bit of an odd issue. Really too odd to type out, but here goes. Basically I have a controller that refuses to "respond_to" using javascript unless I assign my "chart.generate_xml" to a variable before the "respond_to" block like so: @xml = @chart.generate_xml(@begin_date,@end_date,1.hour) respond_to do |format| format.html format.js{ render :update do |page| page.insert_html :bottom, "chart-div", @xml #page.insert_html :bottom, "chart-div", @chart.generate_xml(@begin_date,@end_date,1.hour) end } If I remove the upper "@xml= …" portion and go with the lower "page.insert", the "format.js" section doesn't get called. And if I try to force the format with "request.format = :js", I get the javascript returned as text. I'm not doing anything special here in that method call, so I'm not sure why it would choose to respond any differently. FWIW, the method that triggers this controller action is using JS to do so, so I'm confused as to why "format.js" isn't always getting called. Thoughts? Best.

I am looping through to see if all values are 0, if they are then return 0, esle return one The method is used as a test to see if i should free memory or not and set the pointer to null if it is full of 0's. The issue i am having is that the programme should have "some unfree" memory at the end, so i have no idea whether or not its doing it correctly - and gdb i struggle with immensley.   Situation: On my site, I have a comment model, with a deleted field. Users cannot see deleted comments, but I would like to allow admins to see deleted comments, if they choose to. This will be accomplished by having a scope for users with the admin role which allows them to view comments with the deleted field set to false, as well as true. Question: Is Cancan's accessible_by method my best choice for doing so? From what I've read, it sounds like it will facilitate exactly what I'm trying to do, but, I don't want to implement something that is inefficient, if there is a better method.

My question is, do we need to verify these email addresses before we send to them? We have an existing database of users and I'd rather the transition to SES to be transparent to them. I noticed that SES has an API method for verifying emails. If we aren't required to verify, why would someone would use this method?

• WPF Reusing Xaml Effectively

  Hi, I've recently been working on a project using WPF to produce a diagram. In this I must show text alongside symbols that illustrate information associated with the text. To draw the symbols I initially used some png images I had produced. Within my diagram these images appeared blurry and only looked worse when zoomed in on. To improve on this I decided I would use a vector rather than a rastor image format. Below is the method I used to get the rastor image from a file path: protected Image GetSymbolImage(string symbolPath, int symbolHeight) { Image symbol = new Image(); symbol.Height = symbolHeight; BitmapImage bitmapImage = new BitmapImage(); bitmapImage.BeginInit(); bitmapImage.UriSource = new Uri(symbolPath); bitmapImage.DecodePixelHeight = symbolHeight; bitmapImage.EndInit(); symbol.Source = bitmapImage; return symbol; } Unfortunately this does not recognise vector image formats. I tried using this method only on the initial load of my application and storing the resulting canvases in a dictionary that could later be accessed much quicker but I later realised when using the canvases within the dictionary I would have to make copies of them. All the logic I found online associated with making copies used a XamlWriter and XamlReader which would again just introduce a performance problem. The solution I used was to copy the contents of each .xaml image into its own user control and then make use of these user controls where appropriate. This means I now display vector graphics and performance is much better. However this solution to me seems pretty clumsy. I'm new to WPF and wonder if there is some built in way of storing and reusing xaml throughout an application? Apologies for the length of this question. I thought having a record of my attempts might help someone with any similar problem. Thanks.

  I have a classic Java SOA application, with a web UI module, web services module, a service module (Java API), a domain module and a persistence module. In a sense, each of these modules has their own public API. My understanding of Spring Security is that I can use web filters to handle the security of the web gui and web services, and method level security (via annotations) for the service module. My question is this: should I bother to add method level security to the domain module and the persistence module or is that considered overkill?

• jQuery: How to fire event when all asynchronous calls return?

  I have a jQuery application that loads data from five asynchronous server calls. I do not want to display any data until all five calls return. (I plan on displaying a Loading message until that happens.) How can I detect when all five calls have returned? I considered having each callback method increment a variable (using jQuery's data() method, perhaps) and then waiting for the value to become 5. (I am not sure yet how I would listen for that event.) I do not think this is a very good solution, however. What would happen if two calls return at the same time? Is there a better way to do this?
