• Performance of java on different hardware?

  In another SO question I asked why my java programs run faster on AMD than on Intel machines. But it seems that I'm the only one who has observed this. Now I would like to invite you to share the numbers of your local java performance with the SO community. I observed a big performance difference when watching the startup of JBoss on different hardware, so I set this program as the base for this comparison. For participation please download JBoss 5.1.0.GA and run: jboss-5.1.0.GA/bin/run.sh (or run.bat) This starts a standard configuration of JBoss without any extra applications. Then look for the last line of the start procedure which looks like this: [ServerImpl] JBoss (Microcontainer) [5.1.0.GA (build: SVNTag=JBoss_5_1_0_GA date=200905221634)] Started in 25s:264ms Please repeat this procedure until the printed time is somewhat stable and post this line together with some comments on your hardware (I used cpu-z to get the infos) and operating system like this: java version: 1.6.0_13 OS: Windows XP Board: ASUS M4A78T-E Processor: AMD Phenom II X3 720, 2.8 GHz RAM: 2*2 GB DDR3 (labeled 1333 MHz) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT disc: Seagate 1.5 TB (ST31500341AS) Use your votes to bring the fastest configuration to the top. I'm very curious about the results. EDIT: Up to now only a few members have shared their results. I'd really be interested in the results obtained with some other architectures. • git pull crashes after other member push something

  Here it's the story... we have a Github account. I clone the repository ... then I can work with it, commit things, push things, etc ... I use Linux with command line and git version 1.7.7.3 Then other user, using Eclipse and git plugin for eclipse eGit 1.1.0 pushes something, and it appears in the github web pages as the last commit, but when I try to pull: $ git pull remote: Counting objects: 13, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (6/6), done. remote: Total 9 (delta 2), reused 7 (delta 0) Unpacking objects: 100% (9/9), done. error: unable to find 3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6 fatal: object 3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6 not found "3e6c5386cab0c605877f296642d5183f582964b6" is the commit hash of the last commit, done by the other user ... there's no problem at all to browse it through web page ... but for me it's impossible to pull it. It's strange, because my command line output tells about that commit hash, so it knows that one is the last one commit in the github system, but my git can not pull it ! Maybe the git protocol used in eGit is incompatible with the console git 1.7.7.3...

• Swingworker producing duplicate output/output out of order?

  What is the proper way to guarantee delivery when using a SwingWorker? I'm trying to route data from an InputStream to a JTextArea, and I'm running my SwingWorker with the execute method. I think I'm following the example here, but I'm getting out of order results, duplicates, and general nonsense.   I'm trying to install gevent on a fresh EC2 CentOS 5.3 64-bit system. • Custom listbox sorting

  I need to sort the data contained within a number of listboxes. The user will be able to select between two different types of sorting using radio boxes, one of which is checked by default on form load. I have created the IF statements needed in order to test whether the checked condition is true for that radio button. but i need some help to create the custom sort algorithms. Each list with contain similar looking data, the only difference in the prefix with which each line starts. For example each line in the first listbox starts with the prefix "G30" and the second listbox will be "G31" and so on. There are 10 listboxes in total (G30-G39 in terms of prefixes). The first search algorithm has to sort the lines by the number order of the first 13 chars. Example: This is how the data looks before sorting G35:45:58:11 JG07 G35:45:20:41 JG01 G35:58:20:21 JG03 G35:66:22:20 JG05 G35:45:85:21 JG02 G35:64:56:11 JG03 G35:76:35:11 JG02 G35:77:97:12 JG03 G35:54:29:11 JG01 G35:55:51:20 JG01 G35:76:24:20 JG06 G35:76:55:11 JG01 and this is how it should look after sorting G35:45:20:41 JG01 G35:45:58:11 JG07 G35:45:85:21 JG02 G35:54:29:11 JG01 G35:55:51:20 JG01 G35:58:20:21 JG03 G35:64:56:11 JG03 G35:66:22:20 JG05 G35:76:24:20 JG06 G35:76:35:11 JG02 G35:76:55:11 JG01 G35:77:97:12 JG03 as you can see, the prefixes are the same. so it is sorted, lowest first, by the next pair integers, then the next pair and the next but not by the value after "JG". the second sort algorithm will ignore the first 13 chars and sort by order of the value after "JG", highest first. any help? theres some rep in it for you :) thanks in advance

  I am trying to create a link server of a remote database(both the servers are SQL serve2005). I am able to connect that remote server from my SQL Server management studio. I used the following syntax to create it. EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'LINKSQL2005', @srvproduct = N'', @provider = N'SQLNCLI', @provstr = N'SERVER=IP Address of remote server ;User ID=XXXXXX;Password=***' I have provided the IP addressntax. and user name and password in the above syntax. The link server is getting created. But when I try to execute a query on it I get the error below. Query Used. select * from LINKSQL2005.<DBName>.dbo.<TableName> OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LINKSQL2005" returned message "Communication link failure". Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 0 Login failed for user 'sa'. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LINKSQL2005" returned message "Invalid connection string attribute". Pls help me, where am I making mistake.

• Why can't I Bind a viewmodel property to a dependency property of a custom control

  I want to use a color picker in my wpf application and I saw a nice looking one on this codeproject page. The control works fine until I want to connect the control to a viewmodel. I created a small test program with this viewmodel: public class ColorViewModel : ViewModelBase { public ColorViewModel() { LineColor = Brushes.Yellow; } SolidColorBrush _brushColor; public SolidColorBrush LineColor { get { return _brushColor; } set { _brushColor = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => LineColor); } } } The test program has a textbox and the colorpicker controls: <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="Please Select a Color" FontWeight="Bold" Margin="10" Foreground="{Binding Path=LineColor, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}"/> <vw:ColorPickerControlView x:Name="ForeColorPicker" Margin="10" CurrentColor="{Binding Path=LineColor, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged }"/> </StackPanel> In the loaded event of the window I set the viewmodel to the datacontext like this: DataContext = new ColorViewModel(); The problem is that I can't seem to bind the LineColor property of the viewmodel to the CurrentColor property of the ColorPickerControlView. The CurrentControl property of the ColorPickerControlView seems to be fine. The constructor looks like this: public ColorPickerControlView() { this.DataContext = this; InitializeComponent(); CommandBindings.Add(new CommandBinding(SelectColorCommand, SelectColorCommandExecute)); } In the constructor of the UserControl there is the line this.DataContext = this; I read that is is necessary to bind the dependency properties. Do I override this line when I set my viewmodel to the datacontext and is that why I can't bind to the CurrentColor property? Is there any workaround? Or did I make another mistake?

  Hi, I'm writing an app that connect to a website and read one line from it. I mean, I close the BufferedReader in the last line, but I do not close the InputStreamReader. Should I create a standalone InputStreamReader from the connection.getInputStream, and a BufferedReader from the standalone InputStreamReader, than close all the two readers? I think it will be better to place the closing methods in the finally block like this: InputStreamReader isr = null; BufferedReader br = null; try{ URLConnection connection = new URL("www.example.com").openConnection(); isr = new InputStreamReader(connection.getInputStream()); br = new BufferedReader(isr); String response = br.readLine(); }catch (Exception e) { //exception handling }finally{ br.close(); isr.close(); } But it is ugly, because the closing methods can throw exception, so I have to handle or throw it. Which solution is better? Or what would be the best solution?

  Hi, I am looking for a solution to automatically create .m3u playlists for each music folder in my sdcard so that the music player can play music by folders. I had written a simple VB.Net app in the past that does exactly the above but apparently, it has to be run from Windows. Since I have no Java nor Android developing experience I found it quite hard to try to write a similar app that can be run directly from the phone. In a few words, the app does the following: 1) Searches the SD and lists all folders that contain 2 or more .mp3 files (just for user verification) 2) Creates in every listed folder above, a .m3u file that simply lists line-by-line all the mp3 files that exist in the specific folder. Is there such an app or could someone spare some time and give me some rough instructions on how to create it in Eclipse 3.5.2 environment? (device used: Motorola Droid/Milestone, Android 2.1) I don't care about any graphics or complex UI, just a script to execute the above procedure that would give every "playlist-supporting" music player in Android, the precious ability to play music by folders. I know it is too much to ask but just in case! Thanx in advance.

• Debugging Django project problem.

  Hi all, I asked this question before, but had no replies, maybe I wasn't so clear. I'm trying to debug a django project using MySQL database. If I run the admin or trying to use the shell to communicate to the data base every thing is well and I can do every thing. I installed MySQLdb for Python 2.6. I installed PyDev on my Apatana studio. Configured the Debugging with runserver 8001 --noreload. When I start debugging , When I arrive to the following code in C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\django\db\backends\mysql\base.py try: import MySQLdb as Database except ImportError, e: from django.core.exceptions import ImproperlyConfigured raise ImproperlyConfigured("Error loading MySQLdb module: %s" % e) I get an import error : django.core.exceptions.ImproperlyConfigured: Error loading MySQLdb module: DLL load failed: The specified module could not be found. I trying to ge more deeply with the import MySQLdb as Database line , it goes to the C:\Python26\Lib\site-packages\MySQLdb__init__.py and fail in the line import _mysql. I can't understand the problem. When running the Django admin every thing is ok, but with debugging it fails to work. Any help please. Thanks in advance.

  Hello, My exe processes text documents and I want to be able to right click on documents, select open with and point to my exe file. I can double click on my exe and choose a file to process with OpenFileDialog and it works fine. However, when I do open with, I get FileNotFound error. • Facebook IOS SDK: Error in Publish Story Dialog

  I've successfully set up the "DemoApp" project from the Facebook IOS SDK to use my "OKC ThunderCast" Facebook application. I have also configured another "Tester" application from scratch to successfully use the Facebook SDK and publish stories to my news feed. However, in my production application, I always get this result when calling the "dialog" method. The full description of the error message is "Error on line 52 at column 17: Opening and ending tag mismatch: div line 0 and body" Here's a detailed walkthrough of all of my code to make sure nothing is missed. 1) A UIViewController calls the "authorize" method NSArray *fbPerms = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"read_stream", @"offline_access", nil]; [[FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook authorize:fbPerms delegate:self]; Note: The FacebookSingleton is a class I wrote that always returns a single instance of the "Facebook" class. I am using it successfully in other applications. 2) Safari is opened and the user is successfully authenticated and authorized 3) The application is called back and the "handleOpenUrl" method is called, which calls the "fbDidLogin" method of the UIViewController - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application handleOpenURL:(NSURL *)url { Facebook *fb = [FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook; return [fb handleOpenURL:url]; } 4) The same UIViewController handles the "fbDidLogin" event, and calls the "dialog" method - (void)fbDidLogin { [[FacebookSingleton sharedInstance].facebook dialog:@"feed" andDelegate:self]; } I also have the necessary "URL Schemes" and "URL Types" entries in the .plist file. To my eyes, I am using exactly the same code in the "DemoApp", "Tester", and production applications. But while the DemoApp and Tester work, I always see this HTML error in the feed dialog in my production application. Has anyone seen a similar issue? Could it be related to the Facebook "Bundle ID" setting in the Facebook application settings? Is there some build or .plist setting that is different? • Catching 'Last Record' in Coldfusion for IE javascript bug

  I'm using ColdFusion to pull UK postcodes into an array for display on a Google Map. This happens dynamically from a SQL database, so the numbers can range from 1 to 100+ the script works great, however, in IE (groan) it decides to display one point way off line, over in California somewhere. I fixed this issue in a previous webapp, this was due to the comma between each array item still being present at the end. Works fine in Firefox, Safari etc, but not IE. But, that one was using a set 10 records, so was easy to fix. I just need a little if statement to wrap around my comma to hide it when it hits the last record. I can't seem to get it right. Any tips/suggestions? here is the line of code in question: var address = [<cfloop query="getApplicant"><cfif getApplicant.dbHomePostCode GT ""><cfoutput>'#getApplicant.dbHomePostCode#',</cfoutput></cfif> </cfloop>]; Hopefully someone can help with this rather simple request. I'm just having a bad day at the office!

• How can I find out why a website looks different when I upload it to IIS ?

  Good day... I've been working on a website project, that requires to be on a Microsoft IIS Web Server. It is HTML, pure HTML, with really nice CSS, web-standards, etc. I open this website using in my computer, using Firefox, IE 8.0, Safari, Google Chrome and it looks fine everywhere. But as I upload it to the Microsoft IIS server, it changes a few things. for example: the main menu, which is a navigation bar that has dropdowns, seems to change it's line-height for some reason, and it is bigger. Some <h3> or <h2> Alignment seems wrong as well... And the lines that are supposed to surround the photographs in the website (like a frame - dotted line) won't appear. But all the rest of the CSS is loading perfectly fine. I don't think it's a path problem as everything is loading fine. But this is making me look bad and it is very important to have this done as soon as possible. Can someone give me good suggestions on what to look at ? The IIS permissions seem fine. I'm not a big Microsoft fan...but I have to develop the website there. Also, I uploaded the site to my apache server and it worked wonders. I wish I could change the policies in this corporation, but I can't. Thank you so much for your kind help.

• what's an effective way to build a csproj file in code?

  I'd like to avoid a command line for this. I've been using the MSBuild API ( Microsoft.Build.Framework and Microsoft.Build.BuildEngine) with code that looks like this: this.buildEngine = new Engine(); BuildPropertyGroup props = new BuildPropertyGroup(); props.SetProperty("Configuration", "Debug"); this.buildEngine.RegisterLogger(this.logger); Project proj = new Project(this.buildEngine); proj.LoadXml(this.projectFileAndPath, ProjectLoadSettings.None); this.buildEngine.BuildProject(proj, "Build"); However I've run into enough problems that I can't find answers for that I'm really wondering if I'm doing this right. First, I can't find the output (there's no bin directory in any of the places where I figured the dll's would end up). Second, I tried building a project that I had made in VS2008 and the line proj.LoadXml( fails for invalid xml encoding. But of course the xml file is valid, since VS2008 can build it (I checked). At this point I'm beginning to wonder if I've picked up some code that's way out of date or a methodology that's been superseded by something else. Opinions?

• Getting entitlement warning while building an Ad Hoc Distribution Bundle for an Iphone App.

  I followed Apple's instructions on how to create an Ad Hoc Distrubution bundle but I keep getting what appears to be a fatal Warning during the build process. As per the instructions, I set the signing identity to my distribution profile at the target (instead of the project), created my Entitlement.plist file and unchecked get-task-allow, linked this file to my target and run the build in distribution for device mode. When I do that, the build completes successful but only after giving the following warning. [WARN]CodeSign warning: entitlements are not applicable for product type 'Application' in SDK 'Device - iPhone OS 3.1.2'; ignoring... The last step in the build is the CodeSign and I've noticed that although it ran without errors, it's missing the --entitlement command line option that is given on the official apple instruction guide. Here is my CodeSign line /usr/bin/codesign -f -s "iPhone Distribution: My Name" --resource-rules=/Volumes/Data/projects/xcode/MyAppName/build/Distribution-iphoneos/MyAppName.app/ResourceRules.plist /Volumes/Data/projects/xcode/MyAppName/build/Distribution-iphoneos/MyAppName.app And here is apple's screen shot of what's expected. Can someone please help me figure out if this is something I'm doing wrong because much to my dismay even the dev forum at apple has very little information on this CodeSign warning.

• HttpUtility.HtmlDecode driving me crazy!!!!

  Hi everybody! This situation is driving me crazy!!: the following snippet does not work (as i should) ... string preResult = doc.DocumentNode.SelectSingleNode("//textarea[@name='utrans']").InnerText return HttpUtility.HtmlDecode(preResult); ... The first line assigns a value (e.g.) "&lt;b&gt; Dummy value: &lt;/ b&gt; into preResult (that's expected). BUT the next line gives AGAIN the same value!!! But it should return "<b> Dummy value: </ b>". Debugging these lines i thought to copy and paste the value directly into HttpUtility.HtmlDecode() and guess what...it worked!!! I got the expected value! Of course this is useless, but it proves something weird is going on...what?!! Has anybody faced the same situation again? (dev.env. VS2008,.NET3.5SP1) Thanks in advance

• Launch ClickOnce via URL but not checking for updates

  I have a ClickOnce app that is frequently launched from another application via a URL. The URL includes some command-line arguments that load data, etc. Since the frequency of launching the app is so high, I want to cut out the check for version updates. So I implemented my own checking through the ApplicationDeployment class to avoid it. It works fine if you launch from the Start Menu once the app is installed. However, we also want to preserve the launch via URL behavior because it is advantageous in so many ways. But when launching via URL, the update check is always performed -- it seems IE isn't smart enough to look for the app in the local download area to see if it is already installed or not... Does anyone know of a way to get the "don't check for updates automatically" behavior while still using the URL launch mechanism? Actually, it looks like the issue is a Catch-22 in the ClickOnce model. If you launch with a URL, IE will always touch base with the host and check the version, updating if necessary, regardless of whether or not the app is flagged as "Don't check version". However, if you launch from the Start Menu, ClickOnce disables command-line arguments. Has anyone found any way around this, or know of a MS plan to fix it?

• Multiple forms on a single page

  I've got an app that's in invite-only beta right now. Problem is, I can't get the invite system to work. :( On my root page there's a login form (which works just fine), and I'm trying to add a "request invite" form on the same page. I started doing it by putting the form for InviteRequest (ActiveRecord) inside a partial, in the "views" folder for "InviteRequest". • Simplest way to handle and display errors in a Python Pylons controller without a helper class

  I have a class User() that throw exceptions when attributes are incorrectly set. I am currently passing the exceptions from the models through the controller to the templates by essentially catching exceptions two times for each variable. Is this a correct way of doing it? Is there a better (but still simple) way? I prefer not to use any third party error or form handlers due to the extensive database queries we already have in place in our classes. Furthermore, how can I "stop" the chain of processing in the class if one of the values is invalid? Is there like a "break" syntax or something?   Hello, I am trying to find every "a - b, c, d" pattern in an input string. The pattern I am using is the following : "^[ \t]*(\\w+)[ \t]*->[ \t]*(\\w+)((?:,[ \t]*\\w+)*)$" This pattern is a C# pattern, the "\t" refers to a tabulation (its a single escaped litteral, intepreted by the .NET String API), the "\w" refers to the well know regex litteral predefined class, double escaped to be interpreted as a "\w" by the .NET STring API, and then as a "WORD CLASS" by the .NET Regex API. The input is : a -> b b -> c c -> d The function is : private void ParseAndBuildGraph(String input) { MatchCollection mc = Regex.Matches(input, "^[ \t]*(\\w+)[ \t]*->[ \t]*(\\w+)((?:,[ \t]*\\w+)*)$", RegexOptions.Multiline); foreach (Match m in mc) { Debug.WriteLine(m.Value); } } The output is : c -> d Actually, there is a problem with the line ending "$" special char. If I insert a "\r" before "$", it works, but I thought "$" would match any line termination (with the Multiline option), especially a \r\n in a Windows environment. Is it not the case ?
