Determining whether geographic point is within X meters of a state border (using shapefile for borde

So I'm writing a Java app, and I've got an ESRI Shapefile which contains the borders of all the U.S. states. What I need is to be able to determine whether any given lat/lon point is within a specified distance from ANY state border line - i.e., I will not be specifying a particular border line, just need to see whether the point is close to any of them. The solution does NOT have to be very precise at all; e.g. I don't need to be dealing with measuring perpendicular to the border, or whatever. Just checking to see if going X meters north, south, east or west would result in crossing a border would be more than sufficient. The solution DOES have to be computationally efficient, as I'll be performing a huge number of these calculations. I'm planning to use the GeoTools library (though if there's a simpler option, I'm all for it) with the Shapefile plugin. What I don't really understand is: Once I've got the shapefile loaded into memory, how do I check to see whether I'm near a border? Thanks! -Dan

Why would it be giving me that problem?

Handling Incoming Mail to Multiple Recipients in PHP

Alright, this may take a moment or two to explain: I'm working on creating an Email<SMS Bridge (like Teleflip). I have a few set parameters to work in: Dreamhost Webhosting PHP 5 (without PEAR) Postfix What I have right now, is a catch-all email address that forwards the email sent to a shell account. The shell account in turn forwards it to my PHP script. The PHP script reads it, strips a few Email Headers in an effort to make sure it sends properly, then forwards it to the number specified as the recipient. [email protected] of course sends an SMS to +1 (555) 123-4567. This works really well, as I am parsing the To field and grabbing just the email address it is sending to. However, what I realized that I did not account for is multiple recipients. For example, an email sent to both 5551234567 and 1235554567 (using the To line, the CC line, or any combination of those). The way email works of course, is I get two emails received, end up parsing each of them separately, and 5551234567 ends up getting the same message twice. What is the best way to handle this situation, so that each number specified in TO and CC can get one copy of the message. In addition, though I doubt its possible: Is there a way to handle BCC the same way?

I don't understand how this is happening since "Resource temporarily unavailable" is supposed to correspond to EAGAIN as far as I know. I'm sure there must be something simple I'm missing. And yes, I know this is not a full proof way to test and I account for that.

Using hg repository as web site

This is somewhat related to my security question here. Is it a bad idea to use an hg / mercurial repository for a live website? If so, why? Furthermore, we have dev, test and production installations of our website, like dev.example.com, test.example.com and www.example.com. If it's a bad idea to use a repository for a live/production website, would it be OK to use an hg repository for the dev and test sites? I'm also concerned about ease of deployment. We have technical and less technical co-workers who will be working with the site. The technical guys (software engineers) won't have any problem working with the command line or TortoiseHG. I'm more concerned about the less technical guys (web designers). They won't be comfortable working on the command line, and may even find TortoiseHG daunting. These guys mostly upload .css files and images to the server. I'd like for these files (at least the .css files) to be under version control, but I want this to be as transparent as possible for the non technical guys. What's the best way to achieve this? Edit: Our 'site' is actually a multi-site CMS setup with a main repository and several subrepositories. Mock-up of the repository structure: /root [main repository containing core files and subrepositories] /modules [modules subrepository] /sites/global [subrepository for global .css and .php files] /sites/site1 [site1 subrepository] ... /sites/siteN [siteN subrepository] Software engineers would work in the root, modules and sites/global repositories. Less technical guys (web designers) would work only in the site1 ... siteN subrepositories.

Hi guys, I´m having a problem trying to play a flashMovie(swf file)... SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like TRY/CATCH is possible in SQL 2000? I realize there are no built in methods for this, so I guess I am looking for some creativity. Even when wrapping each backup (or any failing statement) via sp_executesql the job fails instantly. Example: DECLARE @x INT, @iReturn INT PRINT 'Executing statement that will fail with 208.' EXEC @iReturn = Sp_executesql N'SELECT * from TABLETHATDOESNTEXIST;' PRINT Cast(@iReturn AS NVARCHAR) --In SSMS this return code prints. Executed as a job it fails and aborts before this statement.

The following $header is being sent via PHP's mail($to,$subject,$content,$header) command. The mail arrives and appears to have an attachment. But the mail text is empty as is the file. I think this has something to do with line spacing but I can't see the problem. I have tried putting the contents (between the boundaries) in $contents rather than appending it to $header. It doesn't make a difference. Any thoughts? How can I substitute the nth occurrence of a match in a Perl regex?

Following up from an earlier question on extracting the n'th regex match, I now need to substitute the match, if found. I thought that I could define the extraction subroutine and call it in the substitution with the /e modifier. Sourcing a script file in bash before starting an executable

Hi, I'm trying to write a bash script that "wraps" whatever the user wants to invoke (and its parameters) sourcing a fixed file just before actually invoking it. To clarify: I have a "ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash" script that must be sourced before starting certain executables, so I'd like to have a "LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash" script that you can use as in: LaunchInMyEnvironment <whatever_executable_i_want_to_wrap> arg0 arg1 arg2 I tried the following LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: #!/usr/bin/bash launchee="$@" if [ -e ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash ]; then source ConfigureMyEnvironment.bash; fi exec "$launchee" where I have to use the "launchee" variable to save the $@ var because after executing source, $@ becomes empty. Anyway, this doesn't work and fails as follows: myhost $ LaunchInMyEnvironment my_executable -h myhost $ /home/me/LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: line 7: /home/bin/my_executable -h: No such file or directory myhost $ /home/me/LaunchInMyEnvironment.bash: line 7: exec: /home/bin/my_executable -h: cannot execute: No such file or directory That is, it seems like the "-h" parameter is being seen as part of the executable filename and not as a parameter... In VB.net websites, VS2008 ALWAYS uses space indentation for new files

So, I've changed my settings in Tools | Options | Text Editor, for All Languages, Basic, and C#, to having Block indenting, and 'Keep tabs'. I've also tried this with Smart indenting too. Now, although once I start editing a file, its auto indentation is done with tabs, when I create a new web form in my ASP.net website, VS2008 insists on creating the initial code with space indentation. So for example, I'll get an aspx.vb file for my new page like so: Partial Class Admin_Index Inherits System.Web.UI.Page End Class Note that the 'Inherits' line is SPACE-indented, even though I have the text editor settings set to keep tabs. Is there any way I can make the default created files indented with tabs, not spaces? Or is VS just too stubborn? :-) By the way, please don't just respond and say this is petty as I can quickly change that one line of indentation to using a tab. I know this, but I have a software team that find it irritating as we have an SVN hook that prevents checkins if there's any space-indentation. It would be very useful if any newly-created files have tab indentation from the start, rather than us having to change it every time.

How to use URLClassLoader to load a *.class file?

I'm playing around with Reflection and I thought I'd make something which loads a class and prints the names of all fields in the class. C# Help with a basic pedagogic example of a BackGroundWorker process populating a DataGridView

Scenario: I have a windows form that holds a DataGridWiew with 3 pre-defined columns. I have 3 variables declared outside the function and assigned to inside the function. I have a function that enumerates stuff and puts it in the 3 columns, line by line: string VARIABLE1; string VARIABLE2; string VARIABLE3; private void FunctionEnumerateStuff() { foreach (StuffObject STUFF in StuffCollection) { VARIABLE1 = STUFF.SubStuff1.ToString(); VARIABLE2 = STUFF.SubStuff2.ToString(); VARIABLE3 = STUFF.SubStuff3.ToString(); DatagridWiew1.Rows.Add(VALUE1, VALUE2, VALUE3); } } What I want to do, is to execute this function from a BackGroundWorker process, so that the GUI of the application will be smooth and responsive. I have read up on backgroundworkers but I am having trouble relating, because all examples seems to be of entirely different scenarios and most of them are overwelmingly complex. San some helpful pedagogic soul help me and others with a very basic example of how to get this to work in the simplest way possible. Thanks.

What's a good way to remove all of the subviews of a UIScrollView?

I have a scroll view and I need to reload the contents often while my app is running. Right now, I'm using the following line of code to remove the subviews before adding them back again: [scrollView.subviews makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(removeFromSuperview)]; Should I be using the following instead? scrollView.subviews = nil; For some reason, the (first) above line of code seems to crash the app every 16 times it is run. Am I leaking memory somewhere? The following method takes an array of views, the scroller (which is a constant) and the direction. Okay. Now I give up. I have been playing with this for hours. I have a variable name $data. The variable contains these contents: array ( 'headers' => array ( 'content-type' => 'multipart/alternative; boundary="_689e1a7d-7a0a-442a-bd6c-a1fb1dc2993e_"', ), 'ctype_parameters' => array ( 'boundary' => '_689e1a7d-7a0a-442a-bd6c-a1fb1dc2993e_', ), 'parts' => array ( 0 => stdClass::__set_state(array( 'headers' => array ( 'content-type' => 'text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"', 'content-transfer-encoding' => 'quoted-printable', ), 'ctype_primary' => 'text', )), ), ) I removed some non-essential data. I want to access the headers value (on the second line above) - simple: $data->headers I want to access the headers value (on the fourteenth line after the stdClass:: stuff) - how? How can I possibly access the values within the stdClass::__set_state section? I tried var_export($data->parts); but all I get is NULL
