• How can I get the current OU with a PowerShell login script?

  I am setting up a Terminal Server 2008 which will be used by different client organisations, each with multiple individual user accounts. I would like each client organisation to have a drive mapped to \server\clients\ Their OU name is also their client name, so I would like to be able to find their current OU and then use it for the mapping command. The OUs are hierarchicals, so it is the bottom-most OU name I need. Example OU: Dedicated Clients\AjaxCorp Should get a drive mapped to \\server1\shares\AjaxCorp Any suggestions on how I can get the OU? I am sure it must be easy, I just haven't figured it out... I did find information about how to do this with VB script, but as it is a whole new environment I thought it would be nice to use PowerShell instead.

One thing I couldn't find information on is adding a preexisting pool to a fresh server install. I ask this given the following situation: You install Windows Server 2012 and setup your storage pools You add disks over time to your pool A year later your drive with the operating system fails You replace the bad drive and reinstall server 2012. Now how do you add this preexisting storage pool full of data to your fresh install?

• Throwing TRIM support in Ubuntu guest at Win7-Virtualbox host

  I have VirtualBox 4.1.14 on Windows 7 as host, and Ubuntu server 11.10 as guest. System was installed at traditional HDD years ago (and upgraded later), but now it's at SSD as expanding drive. There is "AHCI" and "it's SSD" features enabled in SATA controller. Problem is, this expanding drive growth to it's almost max size (90% of it), but actually in VM only about 50% spent. Also, guest VM does not recognize /dev/sda as SSD, /sys/block/sda/queue/rotational says "1", /sys/block/sda/queue/discard_* all says "0". And, of course, I cannot run fstrim /, it says that operation not supported. Is there some trick to enable TRIM support in my guest system without reinstalling it?

• SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help.. • How do quotes/strings work in Powershell?

  I'm have a command line that works in the regular old Windows Command Shell, but somehow gets misinterpreted in Powershell (I'm fairly new to Powershell). sqlcmd -S .\SQLEXPRESS -i "f:\SQLBackups\ExpressMaint.sql" -v DB="ksuite" -v OPTYPE="DB" -v BACKUPFOLDER="f:\SQLBackups" -v REPORTFOLDER="f:\SQLBackups\Reports" -v DBRETAINUNIT="days" -v DBRETAINVAL="7" Powershell seems to be stripping the drive letters out of the arguments that require paths. For example, I get the following when I attempt to run the above command in Powershell: Sqlcmd: ':\SQLBackups': Invalid argument. Enter '-?' for help. Well sure it's invalid without the drive letter. I have tried variations on double quoting it, escaping it, etc. but can't get it to work. What am I missing that Powershell does differently?

However, I don't understand how I can manage the physical hard drive (for ex, deleting vhdx files, creating folders, etc) from my Windows 8 client.   I am trying to install a dual boot with windows 7 premium and windows 8 Pro on an XPS 8500 special edition. I created a new primary partition on my C: drive, inserted the windows 8 install disk, and rebooted my computer from DVD. I select custom install and the dialog box saying where do you want to install windows at? pops up but none of my drives are listed. Please help me determine what is going on? I don't understand why none of my drives are showing up on this menu. Not even the original drive. When I go to load driver and click on the partition I created it tells me "No signed device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK."

  We're getting this a lot lately. Windows 2008 Server Windows 7 & Vista Client PC's Microsoft Office 2007 When a user tries opening a file on our network drive (word doc, excel spreadsheet, etc) the software reports the file is locked by 'another user' even when it's not. They're also seeing random 'Sharing Violation' errors when trying to save files to the network. Possibly the same manifestation of the problem shows up when a user tries saving a local, on their own drive, non-network files and they get 'Can not save due to a Sharing Violation'.

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04 installed using wubi + Win7. I'm trying to create a link to "my documents" directory which located in my C drive: C:\Users\Myuser\My Documents\ Since the Ubuntu is installed in D:\, which is the "host", my C drive is accessible via /media/some_changing_hex. This hex get changed each time I restart my machine. So I need, somehow, to create a link that uses regex OR a link that somehow gets the the first (in this case - only) subdirectory in /media (something like all_subdirectories[0]). So how do I do that?

The computer on that network drive is running Windows XP. I want to back up data on Windows 7. How would I do so? I'd like something similar to Mac OS X' time machine. So copy of data every hour, day, week. Then thinning out, data gets deleted automatically as time goes by. For example, the data for last day is kept as hourly snapshots. For last week, as daily snapshots every day. And for last month as weekly snapshots. How can I achieve this?

• How do I reinforce compression options?

  Shortly after I got my computer, I enabled NTFS compression on it, selecting the option to compress "all files and subfolders". I recently noticed that several folders on my PC are not compressed anymore, including "Program Files" and "Windows". I suspect this happened when I installed Windows 8.1. The problem is, the only way I can think of to fix this would be to uncheck the tick box under "Properties" for my drive, thus decompressing everything on my drive, and then re-check it with the "all files and subfolders" option. Is there a way to compress all the uncompressed folders without first decompressing the compressed folders?

• How can I restore GRUB without a live CD?

  I realize that this is a duplicate of a question asked before, but in that question the asker managed to find his live CD and no real answer appeared, thus I am re-asking it. I managed to screw up my GRUB by deleting two linux partitions on my hard drive from windows. After this, GRUB gives the error "partition not found", and gives me the grub-rescue prompt. The only command I have found to work in this is 'ls', which spits out my partitions. I would use the live CD fix, but I am in India, and all my live CDs are back home in the US... What I've got is an internet connection, a 4GB flash drive with Flow OS installed (which I am currently using but can wipe if need be), and a working laptop that I can borrow. What should I do?

  I'm not sure if this is possible, but I'm hoping you guys will know one way or the other! I'm going to be reinstalling windows xp, and the primary master IDE is a smaller 10 gig drive. I'm pretty sure that if I tried to install all my programs back onto the C:\ drive that they'd not all fit. Is it possible to get my Program Files directory to point to a partition on one of my larger drives, so I don't end up with some of my programs on C:\ and others on D:\, E:\, etc?

• Linux software RAID6: 3 drives offline - how to force online?

  This is similar to 3 drives fell out of Raid6 mdadm - rebuilding? except that it is not due to a failing cable. Instead the 3rd drive fell offline during rebuild of another drive. The drive failed with: kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdc, sector 293732432 kernel: md/raid:md0: read error not correctable (sector 293734224 on sdc). After rebooting both these sectors and the sectors around them are fine. This leads me to believe the error is intermittent and thus the device simply took too long to error correct the sector and remap it. I expect that no data was written to the RAID after it failed. Therefore I hope that if I can kick the last failing device online that the RAID is fine and that the xfs_filesystem is OK, maybe with a few missing recent files. Taking a backup of the disks in the RAID takes 24 hours, so I would prefer that the solution works the first time. • Should we install the OS on an SSD or not when running virtual machines?

  I have a new Dell Mobile Precision M6500 laptop with 8 GB RAM. it has two hard drives - 500 GB @7200 RPM and a 128 GB SSD. The main purpose of these laptop is software development in virtual machines. The plan is to install the base OS (Windows 7) and all the programs in the 500 GB drive, and let the SSD only contain the virtual machine images. It is my understanding that the we get most performance from the virtual machines if the images are on a separate hard drive than the base OS. Is this the way to go, or should I install the OS on the SSD as well? What are the pros and cons? The virtual machine images would be between 20 - 30 GB, and I might run 1 or 2 at a time.

  TrueCrypt - "Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0" error message on boot. When i start my laptop (Acer TravelMate 2410). after the starting memory check, the screen goes full black, and a message appears for about 3 seconds: Warning! Password locked: Fixed disk0 and after that, disappears, and next message comes out: Operating System Not Found and all stops here. Windows Xp was installed on it, before this came. TrueCrypt cd (witch was made during the process of full encryption) is not working, not in restoring MBR, no even in decrypting my drive - completely useless. Note: I detected some short of boot sector errors (i dont know the amount) on my drive before this happened. Please, i would greatfully thank every comment, or suggestion, because my computer is unusable now. The HDD is a Samsung HDD, 160Gb. Other preferences: Acer TravelMate 2410 Notebook, 2 Gb RAM, 1500 Mhz Intel Celeron M processor. Regards

  I have a small office with 3 computers running Linux Ubuntu. All the data are stored in a NAS drive (WD MyBook Live). I would like to - somehow - be able to access the email archives as well from each of these computers. For now, I don't really care if it would be possible for each user to access the email archives simultaneously (although that would be ideal). I have read about Portable Thunderbird over Wine as well as installing IMAP on the NAS drive.   Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome.   I have two 150GB SATA drives in hardware RAID 0, on which I have my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps). I'm migrating to Windows 7, but I want to keep my XP system until I've got it all running smoothly. So I want to: break the RAID move C: and D: to one of the drives (there's enough room) use the other drive for Win 7 boot into one or the other Clearly I can't move C: and D: after breaking the RAID, so I'm assuming I need to image the two partitions first, then break the RAID and restore the images to one of the drives. So my questions are: Is this possible? If so, what would be a good (free) imaging/restore tool? How do I ensure that the drive will boot after restoring the images? What sort of gotchas should I look out for? If there's a better solution than this, I'd be grateful for suggestions. Thanks!

Ok, I tried to make its image with dd. I/O error as soon as it starts. I have installed ddrescue, but its manual page says not to use it with drives, failing on I/O.   I was wondering if there is a relatively simple way to expand my HD space. My setup is 4 x 640 GB drives. Motherboard has 4 ports on 1 controller and 2 ports on another controller, however they cant be joined. I would like to somehow get more store space in raid configuration. One scenario that I can see working is replacing one 640 drive for a 2TB drive. Waiting for Raid to rebuild. Rinse and repeat.   I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. • How to meet Windows 8 upgrade's 20 GB requirement on a 40 GB SSD with a 22 GB Windows 7 install?

  A PC I have has Windows 7 installed on a 40 GB SSD, and I bought a Windows 8 upgrade for it. The current Windows folder on it however is 22 GB, that's after removing hibernation, turning off the pagefile and removing all extra programs/features. So even if I purge every other file and folder, the Windows folder itself takes more than half the disk. The PC also has a 1 TB HDD, but the upgrade installer didn't give me any options about choosing another drive. So, is my only option to reinstall Windows 7 on a larger drive, then proceed with the Windows 8 upgrade? Or is there anything I can remove from the Windows folder that while might be dangerous for long term usage, is fine for the few minutes I need to get Windows 8 installing?
