• Used mountmanager now Ubuntu hangs on boot

  I was using MountManager in Ubuntu 12.04 to set user permissions in mounting hard drives. I set each partititon to be mountable by everyone instead of admin only. Then I clicked Apply in the file menu and it gave me the message successfully updated. Upon restarting Ubuntu, just hangs on the splash screen and does not boot any further. Windows still boots fine. • VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. • Create new terminal commands

  I recently installed eclipse the manual way. Extracting the file, setting up eclipse.desktop etc. It all works flawlessly. I also know it is possible to install eclipsee using sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform. If I use this method I can use the command eclipse in the terminal, and the program will start. Now the manual way I used does not enable the eclipse-command in the terminal. Instead if I use eclipse-command it asks me to install eclipse from the Softwarecenter (sudo apt-get install eclipse-platform). I wondered if there was some way of setting up a command like this to start eclipse? If so, can I do it for other programs like Apache-Maven mvn-command? I don't want to use "aliases" because I cannot setup and eclipse alias, when "eclipse" is listed in the apt repository. It seems as if only if I install the eclipse from apt-get install I can start eclipse from a single command in the terminal. I appreciate any help, and thanks in advance!

• Can't install GTX 680 drivers on 12.04

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. I have three monitors, and after installing, ubuntu only detected one at 1080p. I downloaded the driver from the nvidia website, but when I stop lightdm and try to run the driver, it gives me an error message: ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. I tried instead to install the driver via the terminal, with the X ppa. The installation seemed to work, but when I rebooted, my display was at 640x480 resolution, with no other options for resolution. The NVIDIA X Server settings program is there now, but when I run it, it simply tells me that I don't seem to be using their driver, and that I should run nvidia-xconfig as root. Doing so doesn't help, I simply get the same issue again. I checked the file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and it's an NVIDIA file (has nvidia in the header). Does anyone know something else I can try? EDIT: Forgot to mention, I tried installing drivers via the "Additional Drivers" GUI utility, there were two options, one of them marked "(post-release updates)". I tried both of them, in both cases it tried to download and install for a while, then said that there was an error, and that a description could be found at /var/log/jockey.log. Both logs were over 700 lines

I only have /dev/sdb2 (mouted as /) and /dev/sda1 which mounts to /media/backup. I delete that line from /etc/motd, but it reappears after reboot. • dist-upgrade broke my insatll HELP

  so I ran apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade the upgrade failed and I lost the gui, I have an encrypted /home drive. When I run apt-get * (any command) I have all kinds of errors mostly missing depends and thats because apparently my network stack is gone. I have no NIC if I run ifconfig. It doesn't even show up with lspci If I were to do a "clean" install of 10.04 LTS which is what I had on my on my build, will I lose all my data? BTW I was just using Ubuntu's default encryption to manage the encryption using my PSWD as the key so if I were to use the same user name and PSWD would my data be accessible? I can see my data from command line, when or if Xorg does start it just loads a basic window with nothing but a black X in the middle of the screen which I can only assume is my mouse cursor but it doesn't move! Reddit /r/linux had some ideas none of which worked was, no help. And apparently /r/ubuntu is full of jerks because all they did was ridicule me. If I can get my install back I probably will be switching back to either Slackware or Gentoo. The Ubuntu forums were of no help they had the same suggestion as /r/linux. I am about to just run my back up script to my back up drives and nuke everything else but I'd rather not.

• Salary Negotiation; How Best to Broach the Subject? [closed]

  So I have an upcoming performance review / salary increase and I am at a point in which I believe I will need to negotiate a larger raise than what is to be proposed. As I suspect this may be the case I have been reading as much information on the subject (negotiation) as possible. I work for a great company and fortunately I work under some really talented and reasonable managers. Unfortunately, I am not sure how best to bring up the subject. I don't want to sound greedy and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot. For the sake of argument, assume that I am actually worth more than I am being paid at the moment and I would like to make a counter offer for a relatively large increase (say, boss says 4%, I would like to counter with 15%. I know that seems very large, but I believe I have a case for it.) My question to you, those who are/have been on the other side of this scenario, is how should I start the conversation? What approach would make you most receptive to my plea? I've never negotiated before and I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot. My direct manager is a very straightforward individual, so sugarcoating is not necessary here, but at the same time, I don't want to seem overly aggressive or demanding.   It is a general question to ask what would be the easiest way to start a website, however every one need a little boost up at the begging. There are content management systems, or admin panels, or some people have developed their own systems and many more diffirent things people use at the very beggining. Among others my way was looking for a very lightweight cms and develop a system on to it, unfortunately I couldn't find a good system to develop on, for example I decided to develop on snewscms (the lightest weight cms) but it is really hard to manage since it is not developed with object oriented programming standarts and I thought it would be a mistake to continue developing on to such a system. On the other hand starting to code from the core would be weak about security, and using a massive cms like joomla or drupal will not be good since there will be many things that are unused and moreover I will not feel well when I don't know what I am controlling since it is not easy to know every part of them. What I am asking is what would you do if you had lost all the files you are currently using today, where would you start from? What tool would you use? Or is there a lightweight and well coded tool to get start with?

• 3.2.0-31-generic version doesn't boot

  12.04 used to work just fine a month ago. Since August, I installed all of the available updates. Since then my mac-pro is acting weird. If I restart the computer, the screen gets stuck in the purple back ground without any texts. Then if I restart again, I can choose what versions of linux I want to run. If I select 3.2.0-31-generic, the machine gets stuck in a state of blinking cursor. If I boot again to run 3.2.0-31-generic recovery mode, the machine gets stuck in a "..... memory freed End of Stack" mode. I can't boot through this kernel. I have to choose an older version of linux like 3.2.0-12-generic to boot into my mac pro, but I have too boot twice to get into this version. I was wondering --if you could provide me a solution to boot the 3.2.0-31-generic version. -- if you could provide me a solution to boot into any version the first time I restart. (Usually I have to kill the first restart) --- If there is an option in linux to choose what version I want to run every time I restart so that I don't have to choose everytime. Thank you

• C# Bind DataTable to Existing DataGridView Column Definitions

  I've been struggling with a NullReferenceException and hope someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. I'm trying to create and populate a DataTable and then show the results in a DataGridView control. The basic code follows, and Execution stops with a NullReferenceException at the point where I invoke the new UpdateResults_Delegate. Oddly enough, I can trace entries.Rows.Count successfully before I return it from QueryEventEntries, so I can at least show 1) entries is not a null reference, and 2) the DataTable contains rows of data. I am refactoring old code that retrieved records from a database, collected those records as an array, and then later iterated through the array to populate a DataGridView row by row. Threading was originally implemented to compensate and keep the UI responsive during the unnecessary looping. I have since stripped out Thread/Invoke; everything now occurs on the same execution thread (thank you, Sam). I am attempting to replace the slow, unwieldy approach using a DataTable which I can fill with a DataAdapter, and assign to the DataGridView through it's DataSource property (above code updated). I've iterated through the entries DataTable's rows to verify the table contains the expected data before assigning it as the DataGridView's DataSource. foreach (DataRow row in entries.Rows) { System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine( String.Format("{0} {1} {2}", row[0], row[1], row[2])); } One of the column of the DataGridView is a custom DataGridViewColumn to stylize the event_type value. I have converted this column temporarily to a standard DataGridViewTextBoxColumn control and am no longer experiencing the Exception. The fields in the DataTable are appended to the list of fields that have been pre-specified in Design view of the DataGridView. The records' values are being populated in these appended fields. When the run time attempts to render the cell a null value is provided (as the value that should be rendered is done so a couple columns over). In light of this, I am re-titling and re-tagging the question. I would still appreciate it if others who have experienced this can instruct me on how to go about binding the DataTable to the existing column definitions of the DataGridView.

  Original Question What I'd like is not a standard C pre-processor, but a variation on it which would accept from somewhere - probably the command line via -DNAME1 and -UNAME2 options - a specification of which macros are defined, and would then eliminate dead code. Many of the conditions no longer apply - the OLDUNIX platform, for example, is no longer made and no longer supported, so there is no need to have references to it in the code. Other conditions are always true. For example, features are added with conditional compilation so that a single version of the code can be used for both older versions of the software where the feature is not available and newer versions where it is available (more or less). Eventually, the old versions without the feature are no longer supported - everything uses the feature - so the condition on whether the feature is present or not should be removed, and the 'when feature is absent' code should be removed too. I'd like to have a tool to do the job automatically because it will be faster and more reliable than doing it manually (which is rather critical when the code base includes 21,500 source files). (A really clever version of the tool might read #include'd files to determine whether the control macros - those specified by -D or -U on the command line - are defined in those files. I'm not sure whether that's truly helpful except as a backup diagnostic. Whatever else it does, though, the pseudo-pre-processor must not expand macros or include files verbatim. The output must be source similar to, but usually simpler than, the input code.) Status Report (one year later) After a year of use, I am very happy with 'sunifdef' recommended by the selected answer. It hasn't made a mistake yet, and I don't expect it to. The only quibble I have with it is stylistic. Given an input such as: #if (defined(A) && defined(B)) || defined(C) || (defined(D) && defined(E)) and run with '-UC' (C is never defined), the output is: #if defined(A) && defined(B) || defined(D) && defined(E) This is technically correct because '&&' binds tighter than '||', but it is an open invitation to confusion. I would much prefer it to include parentheses around the sets of '&&' conditions, as in the original: #if (defined(A) && defined(B)) || (defined(D) && defined(E)) However, given the obscurity of some of the code I have to work with, for that to be the biggest nit-pick is a strong compliment; it is valuable tool to me. The New Kid on the Block Having checked the URL for inclusion in the information above, I see that (as predicted) there is an new program called Coan that is the successor to 'sunifdef'. It is available on SourceForge and has been since January 2010. I'll be checking it out...further reports later this year, or maybe next year, or sometime, or never.

• How to remove buttons in AnythingSlider and stop the sliding?

  I'm currently using the anythingSlider it works quite well. But if there is one li, how do i make it stop sliding and remove the buttons displayed below? The *li*s are generated from the database so sometimes there's only one. I want the buttons to show only when there is more then one image. if there is one image all the buttons( back, forward, pause) should not be displayed. Does anybody know of a way of stopping it sliding if there's only one li and removing the buttons when there is only one image. ===================================================================================== Thank You.   Hello, I am still having trouble with my mysql server. It seems that since i optimize it, the tables were growing and now sometimes is very slow again. I have no idea of how to optimize more. mySQL server has 48GB of RAM and mysqld is using about 8, most of the tables are innoDB. Site has about 2000 users online.   Hi, I'm trying to convert a FreeType2 bitmap to a System::Drawing::Bitmap in C++/CLI. FT_Bitmap has a unsigned char* buffer that contains the data to write. I have got somewhat working save it disk as a *.tga, but when saving as *.bmp it renders incorrectly. I believe that the size of byte[] is incorrect and that my data is truncated. • Flex SDK missing fundamental things

  All of a sudden Flash Builder 4 is missing all kinds of fundamental things and is generating incorrect errors. I've had the same issue yesterday, where I fixed it by downloading a new Flex SDK and importing that into FB. I did this again, but this time it fixed nothing. I don't think it's something I did, like removing critical references from the build path. The errors also appeared on projects I was not working on at the time. It occurs for ActionScript, Flex and Flex Library projects alike. Update 3: Well, i've singled the problem down to a single piece of code, though a very simple one. I can make a new workspace in FB and things work ok, then screw the workspace up forever by adding this code to a project. All projects will have errors and closing or even removing the faulty project does not change this. Making another new workspace (without the faulty code) makes my projects compile again. It appears to be an SDK problem, not Flash Builder.   I have an WCF-service running on an server, and occasionally(1-2 times every month) it throws an COMException with the informative message ”Unknown error (0x8005008)”. When i googled for this particular error I only got threads about problems when creating virtual directories in IIS. And the source code hasn’t anything with making a virtual directory in IIS. Looking back at the stack it is when issuing the Copy method. DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost.Copy(DirectoryServiceLib.LdapProvider.DirectoryPost) So looking in the sourcecode: DirectoryPost postInLimbo = DirectoryPostFactory.Instance().GetDirectoryPost(LdapConfigReader.Instance().GetConfigValue("LimboDN"), idGenPerson.ID.UserId); if (postInLimbo != null) newPost.Copy(postInLimbo); This code is looking for another post in OU=limbo with the same UserId and if it finds one it copies the attributes to the new post. In this case it does and it fails with personalprescriptioncode. I've looked in Active Directory under OU=Limbo and the post exist there with the attribute personalprescriptioncode=31243. Question 1: Why does it display no data for some of the PARAMETERS and LOCALS? Is it the GC who has cleaned up before the memorydump had been created. Question 2: Is there anymore i can do to get to the solution to this problem?

  Suppose I want every word starting with a # to generate an event on double click. However, I have the following two problems: If I try to implement a double click event for richTextBox1, I can detect when a word is clicked, however that word is highlighted (selected), which I'd like to avoid. I can deselect it programmatically by selecting the end of the text, but that causes a flicker, which I would like to avoid. What ways are there to do this? The GetCharIndexFromPosition method returns the index of the character that is closest to the cursor. This means that if the only thing my RichTextBox contains is a word starting with a # then the cursor will be a hand no matter where on the rich text control it is. How can I make it so that it is only a hand when it hovers over an actual word or character that is part of a word I'm interested in? The implemented URL detection also partially suffers from this problem. If I enable detection of URLs and only write www.test.com in the rich text editor, the cursor will be a hand as long as it is on or below the link. It will not be a hand if it's to the right of the link however. I'm fine even with this functionality if making the cursor a hand if and only if it's on the text proves to be too difficult. I'm guessing I'll have to resort to some sort of Windows API calls, but I don't really know where to start. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and I would like to implement this myself. Update: The flickering problem would be solved if I could make it so that no text is selectable through double clicking, only through dragging the mouse cursor. Is this easier to achieve? Because I don't really care if one can select text or not by double clicking in this case.
