• Scale DIV with tiles

  I am trying to create a repeating background. I have a main DIV with a grid of small 16x16 DIVs. I am trying to scale the main DIV in CSS; when the small DIVs simply have a red background color everything works great, but when there is a background image in the small DIVs then borders become visible between the tiles. • How can I view localized versions of my site?

  We are adding internationalization to our site. We are getting the client's IP address from the headers and looking it up against the IP2location database to get the client's country. Several of our clients reported seeing a blank page over the weekend. We'd like to be able to get screenshots or use a browser from many different countries on an ongoing basis for testing code changes. I need to know what the site looks like when accessed from various countries since there are several elements that vary by country. I've used Tor and Vidalia, along with the Tor customized Firefox browser however it appears the CSS is getting mangled. I have also used http://webpagetest.org to check the site, however the screenshot it gives is too small to be really useful. Is there a site or a service I can use to get screenshots or interact with my website from various countries?

• Detect if square in grid is within a diamond shape

  So I have a game in which basically everything is a square inside a big grid. It's easy to check if a square is inside a box whose center is another square: *** x *o* --> x is not in o's square *** **x *o* --> x IS in o's square *** This can be done by simply subtracting the coordinates of o and x, then taking the largest coordinate of that and comparing it with the half side length. Now I want to do the same thing but check if x is in o's diamond, like so: * **x **o** --> x IS in o's diamond *** * What would be the best way to check if a square is in another square's surrounding diamond-shaped area, given the diamond's half width/height?

• What do you need to know to get a job as a web developer [closed]

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

• What web oriented language would work best with binary data?

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? I have knowledge of PHP (and Javascript, HTML and CSS) but no experience with other things like Ruby, Perl, Python, and other web development languages.

• brackets in php templates

  I have a script, and now it's the perfect time to have an option to change theme templates. I was looking forward to store these files in php files, or html files. with CSS file. I looked over some codes and I found that they use brackets to refer to the variable. Here's an example of a template block: <div class='block_div'> <center>{title}</center> {content} </div> I know that I can use PHP vars usering <?=$var;?>. However, I think the one above is better, and I looked over the web to find anything about it but I couldn't. My Question is how I can use these brackets in my php or html code. to let the user changing the template only not the code!

• What undergraduate course to choose for a mature programmer returning to study

  I have been developing applications (mostly web-based) for almost 10 years now and have learnt pretty much everything I know through experience (and the internet!). I wouldn't call myself an advanced programmer, but I am quite proficient in several languages (C#, Javascript, Ruby, HTML/CSS etc) and spend a quite a bit of time working on personal projects and reading countless books & articles. I am looking to emigrate to Canada, hopefully Vancouver (im from the UK) and one way would be on a student visa, if I was going to be studying for a minimum of 2 years. Having never been to university or achieved anything higher than A-Levels I am quite tempted by this path. The thought of learning is more exciting to me now than it was 10 years ago! What would be people recommend as a good undergraduate course to take that would complement this career path? Would Math be beneficial, if so which area of Math? TL;DR What undergraduate course/area of study would complement 10 years of (mostly web-based) programming experience?

• Gzip compress offline?

  I've configured my site to serve compressed content by putting this line in .htaccess AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/javascript application/json This works perfectly for almost all files except a few large JSON files that are above 200Kb. For some reason they are not being compressed. I see that they don't using the net tab in firebug and the Network section in chrome. So as a workaround I thought I could compress these files offline and have Apache read them compressed. What tool should I use to compress them? is the linux gzip the one? any special flags or something I should use? What should I put in .htaccess so that the server would know to serve these files with content-encoding gzip ?

  I cannot mount a data DVD using Ubuntu 12.04. I can read the DVD using a different OS, so the DVD is not the problem. I can read other CDs using Ubuntu.   If i decide to write a simple game both text and graphical (2d) what libs may i use? Assuming we are using a HTML5 compatible browser. The main things i can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but i am unsure how important this will be to me at first). Perhaps with mixing and chaining sounds or looping forever until stop. Networking (low priority) to connect a user to another or to continuously GET data without multiple request (i know this exist but i dont know how easy it is to setup or use. But this isnt important to me. Its for the question).

• Kinect joint coordinates and XNA animation

  I have written a program to record the x,y,z coordinated of the Hand joint and I want to animate my models 2D or 3D according to these coordinates. . .However the output of the x,y,z coordinates are fluctuating from -0 to 1 but not more than that.. • Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Infinite terrain shadows

  I'm creating an infinite terrain engine, which generates the terrain either with fractals or noise. How can I make dynamic shadows for the sun on this terrain, if I don't know in advance what will be rendered in front of the sun. My terrain: The sun is the only light, it is directional, my terrain is generated on a plane which is positioned before the camera, frustum culled and fits the size of the viewing frustum. • Matching my skills with Java and Web Programming

  here is my main question: What is the most common way that Java is used in web development? The reason I ask: I am currently in the process of finding my first internship. Every employer has a separate set of languages, technologies and acronyms they want their candidates to know. In school I did well with Java. As a hobby and interest I have developed a handful of web pages widgets, scripts, etc. My university emphasized Java, C and theory. My hobbies emphasize HTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and a little jQuery, etc. I can't learn a dozen different technologies to satisfy most prospective employers (in what is left of the summer). I think my best bet is combine my skills with Java and my interests in web development. That brings me back to my original question: What is the most common way that Java is used in web development?

• WebFX: Running JavaFX as web page

  This weekend I wanted to learn JavaFX, so I decided to code an idea I had a few years ago when I first saw JavaFX Script. So I started coding a web browser that runs HTML with the awesome, HTML5 supported WebView. But this browser also offers one extra feature: it loads FXML files as if they were HTML. So instead of defining your web page with HTML and running with WebKit, you can define a web page with FXML+CSS+JS and run as a JavaFX application. The project is called WebFX and already has a prototype on GitHub. I also uploaded a video on YouTube demonstrating the idea. What do you think about using JavaFX in the future for web pages, instead of HTML?

• What is the best practice for website design and markup now that mobile browsers are common?

  Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? Does anyone have experience with a Java CMS that does all three? Or have any idea how to approach the problem if none exists? Has someone has used a Java CMS and has been able to add this functionality give some insight?

I have also tried using "Gnome Tweak Tool" using icon themes. But that also does not worked properly (Though I can change folder icons , dash menu icons but not file icons). Please suggest me a way so that I can change file icons properly. I have read some of the articles saying about some mime type changes. I could not get proper guide from any of those articles.
