  • How to get java singleton object manager to return any type of object?

    I'm writing an interactive fiction game in java from scratch. I'm currently storing all of my game object references in a hashmap in a singleton called ObjectManager. ObjectManager has a function called get which takes an integer ID and returns the appropriate reference. The problem is that it returns a BaseObject when I need to return subclasses of BaseObject with more functionality. So, what I've done so far is I've added a getEntity function which returns BaseEntity (which is a subclass of BaseObject). However, when I need the function to return to an object that is a subclass of BaseEntity that has added, required functionality, I will need to make another function. I know there is a better way, but I don't know what it is. I know very little of design patterns, and I'm not sure which one to use here. I tried passing 'class' as a parameter, but that didn't get me anywhere. public BaseObject get(int ID){ return (BaseObject)refMap.get(ID); } public BaseEntity getEntity(int ID){ return (BaseEntity)refMap.get(ID); } Thanks, java ninjas!

    Say you had the following two constructors: - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title; - (id)initWithTitle:(NSString *)title page:(NSString *)page; The second constructor is no different from the first, except that it sets up the member variable "page". Since it basically has to do the same thing, is there a way to call the first one from the second one to reduce code duplication, or do you have to set up a third method to do the common tasks? I thought I could do some self-joins to deal with this, but I am worried in the cases where the non-key fields have the same data in multiple rows.

    So a user selects from a drop down list a value. I take this value, put it into a variable, then select from the database the ID value of that table A holding the selected value also. So now I'm trying to use that ID value to get to a many-to-many relationship table that has the selected value from table A to a different table B. The many-to-many relationship table has both IDs. How can I compare this using PHP? So it would be like: $A = $_POST['a']; $sql = "SELECT a, aID from TABLEA WHERE a = $A"; What do I do then to compare the aID with the many-to-many relationships table, then get the other ID in that table and then take that ID to get values from table B?

    I'm trying to query an element and its children to find ID's that begin with a particular string. var foundIDs = containerElement.find('[id^=something]').andSelf().filter('id^=something'); The find() method only searches descendants so I thought I'd try andSelf(). However, andSelf() does not take a selector. This means that the container element is included regardless of whether it matches the find query or not and I then have to perform a secondary filter() on it to remove the container element if it didn't match after all. I attempted to put andSelf() before the find() but it didn't seem to pick up the container element into the stack. containerElement.andSelf().find('[id^=something]'); Is there any better way to achieve what I'm doing?

    I'm sure I'm simply overlooking something in the Facebook API docs. Basically, after I've loaded the FB Graph, I need to know if the session is active... I cannot simply assume they're logged out and simply re-render if they're logged in once the 'auth.statusChange' event is triggered. I need to know right off the bat. Below is the code that I've used. Most importantly the FB.getLoginStatus/getAuthResponse/getAccessToken don't work like I'd expect; essentially where it indicates, when invoked, whether they're logged in or out.     I have been looking for a while now but I can not find an easy solution for my problem. I would like to duplicate a record in a table, but of course, the unique primary key needs to be updated. I have this query: INSERT INTO invoices SELECT * FROM invoices AS iv WHERE iv.ID=XXXXX ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE ID = (SELECT MAX(ID)+1 FROM invoices) the problem is that this just changes the ID of the row instead of copying the row.   • Div not expanding even with content inside

    I have a stack of divs inside of each other, all of which have an ID which specifies CSS only. But for some reason the surrounding DIV tag only expands to it's anointed height value, and not it's default auto, meaning that although the content is inside, the backing DIV is only a specific height. I need it to adjust the heigh to the size of whatever is inside of it (As there will be user submitted data being echoed out possibly in paragraphs with 500+ words.)     I am trying to close a UIView thats in one method from another method by calling it, The UIView closes fine but not untill after all of the processes are finished in the current method. I would like to know if there is a way to force the first thing to happen first (i.e. close UIviews) then continue the current method? Currently what happes when i debug this is displaySelected method is called the thread walks through that then continues to the if statment then after the method in the if statment has finished then displaySelected changes are made... its so weird. any help would be greatly appreciated.
