• win7-64sp1: Rename folder (including zip file) error popup

  With the install of win7-64sp1 I get a windows explorer popup on any folder rename including .zip files. "Could not find this item" They are referring to the old name. What a bug. If I click "Try Again' the popup goes away, folder is renamed. Lots of posts on the net about this but no fixes. I tried a registry patch (that I shouldn't have) and it did nothing to fix. My experience with Microsoft is that they will never fix this, and want me to buy windows 8. This started happening after the install of sp1. I posted in one of the zillions of ridiculously byzantine and almost useless Microsoft forums but expect no answer there. They'll probably tell me to reinstall windows.

After reboot, under gnome, all the files cannot be removed, their properties cannot be viewed and they can only be opened, although all are still fine under terminal. • File gone or altered after MySQL[HY000][2002] error [on hold]

  I'm working on a rather small project, and today I got an SQLSTATE[HY000][2002]:Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' error. After a bit of googling and a few attempts to restart the mysqld service, I gave up and tried rebooting the computer. This did the trick, MySQL was now running fine. I did, however, get a more serious issue: Some files were missing, others were altered. Also, a few posts in the MySQL was gone. It's really strange, it's like the whole project has been reset two or three days, and I have no clue why. Some additional details about this: I save my files after every line of code. I'm religious about this. So I haven't lost the files that way. I was accessing the server via SSH when the error occurred, so I did the programming and the reboot over SSH. The server is a Raspberry Pi, model B, with Raspian on which I run Apache2. I was viewing the site and had an active session when I rebooted the system. The pages I lost did work just before this all happened. The MySQL fault occurred when I tried to add a text NOT NULL column to a table which had entries. Now, the amount of lost work isn't really that much, so I'm not really looking for help recovering the files. The reason I'm posting this is because I wonder how did this happen, and why?

  I tryied to set the JAVA_HOME environmet variable in the ~/.profile file and I made a mistake JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_37" PATH=$JAVA_HOME:PATH the error is in the PATH referencing. I put PATH rather than $PATH. this prevents me from login. I tried to edit the file using the recovery mode but it says that the file system is read only. so any suggestions how to deal with this issue. thanks

• A Safe Way to Allow Upload of All File Types?

  By default WordPress restricts the file types that can be uploaded to /uploads using the default Media Manager. I know it is possible to manually extend the allowed file types. I also know it is possible to change functions.php to allow ALL file types to be uploaded. This restriction obviously exists for security concerns - e.g. someone could upload a harmful .exe Would it not be possible to allow secure upload of all filetypes by setting the permissions of the /uploads directory to prevent execution of any of its contents? Thus it wouldn't matter if someone uploaded a harmful file because it would not be executable on the server...

• Transient mysqlcheck errors about "size of datafile" (file too small)

  Running mysqlcheck on a live database is giving me transient errors like this one: mydatabase.mytable error : Size of datafile is: 500719688 Should be: 501000484 error : Corrupt When I run the command again or check the table one-off using mysql, it's listed as OK. Is this just a side effect of running checks on live tables? Is it possible that data is not flushed, hence the strange discrepancy? We moved several databases this morning by shutting down mysqld on the source and rsyncing files across to the new server, but these are all MyISAM tables so I don't believe the two things are related. (But I mention it just in case.)

I tried to delete it, and it got rid of everything except 2 files named: ???????????p????????? ???????????p????????? From what I see on Google this has happened to others before. Apparently nothing short of booting up with Linux will solve this??

  For starters, this exercise in GNU make was admittedly just that: an exercise rather than a practicality, since a simple bash script would have sufficed. However, it brought up interesting behavior I don't quite understand. I've written a seemingly simple Makefile to handle generation of SSL key/cert pairs as necessary for MySQL. My goal was for make <name> to result in <name>-key.pem, <name>-cert.pem, and any other necessary files (specifically, the CA pair if any of it is missing or needs updating, which leads into another interesting follow-up exercise of handling reverse deps to reissue any certs that had been signed by a missing/updated CA cert). After executing all rules as expected, make seems to be too aggressive at identifying intermediate files for removal; it removes a file I thought would be "safe" since it should have been generated as a prereq to the main rule I'm invoking. (Humbly translated, I likely have misinterpreted make's documented behavior to suit my expectation, but don't understand how. ;-) Edited (thanks, Chris!) Adding %-cert.pem to .PRECIOUS does, of course, prevent the deletion. (I had been using the wrong syntax.) • Self-describing file format for gigapixel images?

  In medical imaging, there appears to be two ways of storing huge gigapixel images: Use lots of JPEG images (either packed into files or individually) and cook up some bizarre index format to describe what goes where. Tack on some metadata in some other format. Use TIFF's tile and multi-image support to cleanly store the images as a single file, and provide downsampled versions for zooming speed. Then abuse various TIFF tags to store metadata in non-standard ways. Also, store tiles with overlapping boundaries that must be individually translated later. In both cases, the reader must understand the format well enough to understand how to draw things and read the metadata. Is there a better way to store these images? Is TIFF (or BigTIFF) still the right format for this? Does XMP solve the problem of metadata? The main issues are: Storing images in a way that allows for rapid random access (tiling) Storing downsampled images for rapid zooming (pyramid) Handling cases where tiles are overlapping or sparse (scanners often work by moving a camera over a slide in 2D and capturing only where there is something to image) Storing important metadata, including associated images like a slide's label and thumbnail Support for lossy storage What kind of (hopefully non-proprietary) formats do people use to store large aerial photographs or maps? These images have similar properties.

• Evaluating creation of GUI via file vs coding

  I'm working on a utility that will be used to test the project I'm currently working on. What the utility will do is allow user to provide various inputs and it will sends out requests and provide the response as output. However, at this point the exact format (which input is required and what is optional) has yet to be fleshed out. In addition, coding in Swing is somewhat repetitive since the overall work is simple though this should be the safest route to go as I have more or less full control and every component can be tweaked as I want. I'm considering using a configuration file that's in XML to describe the GUI (at least one part of it) and then coding the event handling part (in addition to validation, etc). The GUI itself shouldn't be too complicated. For each type of request to make there's a tab for the request and within each tab are various inputs. There seems to be quite a few questions about this already but I'm not asking for a 3rd party library to do this. I'm looking to do this myself, since I don't think it'll be too overly complicated (hopefully). My main consideration for using this is re-usability (later on, for other projects) and for simplifying the GUI work. My question is: are there other pros/cons that I'm overlooking? Is it worth the (unknown) time to do this? I've built GUI in VB.NET and with Flex3 before.

• Including an embedded framework using a cross-project-reference: Header no such file or directory

  I'm trying to create a Cocoa framework by using a cross-project reference in Xcode. I have 2 projects: one for the framework; one for the application that will use the framework. This framework is not intended to be stored within the system; it is an embedded framework that lives within the application bundle. I have successfully made the cross-project reference, marked the framework as being a dependency of my target, added a Copy Files build phase that puts the framework in Contents/Frameworks/ and added the framework to the linker phase (I checked the little "Target" checkbox; I've also done it manually by dragging the framework into the linker phase). My framework's install directory is correctly set to @executable_path/../Frameworks. However, when I try to build my app it: a) Correctly builds the framework first b) Correctly copies the framework c) Errors because it cannot find the master header file in my framework I have verified that the header is there. I can see it in the app product that is partially built. ls build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h I have been able to successfully build the app by copying my framework into /Library/Frameworks (I can then delete it again after the successful build), but this is a workaround, I'm looking to find it out why Xcode doesn't find the framework's master header file without it being copied to a system directory. Is copying it to the app bundle during the build not sufficient? • Making a COM dll to be invoked from c#, HRESULT error handling?

  I'm making a COM interface that c# will be using, however i am wondering how i am to check for errors and exception handling on the c# end as at the moment i am just returning a HRESTULT or bool for most methods. But several things can go wrong in some of these methods and returning a E_FAIL just doesn't cut it. What can i do in order to return more information? Can i make a HRESULT of my own?

• Ruby / rubyzip alternative capable of handling rar/tar/zip/7z?

  I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z? I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. ( Yeah I know sucks to be me)) Right now I end up running system commands to the os, but I'd like something OS independent, and capable of handling those formats - reading and writing. Thank you
