  On October 30, 2012 Steve Ballmer kicked off the first BUILD conference keynote. Steve shared some insights around Windows 8: 4 million customers upgraded to Windows 8 over the weekend since the October 26 release (so in 3 days only!). Focus on sharing code between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Syncing everything through SkyDrive Xbox Music free streaming and Xbox Smart Glass. He did all the demos himself, showing off great “Windows 8 generation” devices already available (including an 82-inch Windows 8 “slate” by Perceptive Pixel). Steve Guggenheimer (Microsoft's Corporate Vice President DPE) talked about The Business Opportunity with Windows 8.   Notable announcements of day 1: The Windows Phone 8 SDK is now available at dev.windowsphone.com (includes SDK, free version of VS2012, Blend 5, and emulators). • Connecting the Dots (.NET Business Connector)

  Recently, one of my colleagues was experimenting with Reporting Server on DAX 2009, whenever he used to view a report in SQL Server Reporting Manager he was welcomed with an error: “Error during processing Ax_CompanyName report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError)” The Event Log had the following entry: Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.Exceptions.FatalSessionException at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.DynamicsSession.HandleException(Stringmessage, Exception exception, HandleExceptionCallback callback) We later found out that this was due to incorrect Business Connector account, with my past experience I noticed this as a very common mistake people make during EP and Reporting Installations. Remember that the reports need to connect to the Dynamics Ax server to run the AxQueries., which needs to pass through the .NET Business Connector. To ensure everything works fine please note the following settings: 1) Your Report Server Service Account should be same as .NET Business Connector proxy account. 2) Ensure on the server which has Reporting Services installed, the client configuration utility for Business Connector points to correct proxy account. 3) And finally, the AX instance you are connecting to has Service account specified for .NET business connector. (administration –> Service accounts –> .NET Business Connector) These simple checkpoints can help in almost most of the Business Connector related  errors, which I believe is mostly due to incorrect configuration settings. • Red Gate's on the road in 2012 - Will you catch us?

  Annabel Bradford, our Communities and Events Manager, tells all about her experience of our 1st SQL Saturday of the year. The first stop this year was SQL Saturday #104 Colorado Springs, back in early January. I made the trip across from the UK just for this SQL Saturday event, and I'm so glad I did. I picked up Max from Red Gate's Pasadena office and we flew into Colorado Springs airport late on Friday evening to be greeted by freezing temperatures, which was quite a shock after the California sunshine. Rising before the sun, we arrived at Mr Biggs, the venue for the event, in the darkness. It was great to see so many smiling attendees so bright and early on a Saturday morning. Everyone was eager to learn more about SQL Server, and hundreds of people came and chatted with us at the table, saw demos and learnt more about Red Gate tools. The event highlights for the attendees were definitely the unlimited lazer quest, bowling and pool available during the break times. For Max, Grant Fritchey and I on the Red Gate table, the highlights have to be meeting customers and getting the opportunity to meet attendees who'd heard of, but wanted to know more about, Red Gate. We were delighted to hear lots of valuable feedback that we took back to share with the team. As a thank you for sharing insights about their work lives and how they use SQL Server and Red Gate tools, attendees are able to take away Red Gate SQL Server books. We aim to have a range of titles available when we exhibit, so that attendees can choose a book that's going to be most interesting to them, and that they can use as a reference back at the office. Every time I meet a Red Gate user or a member of the SQL community, I'm always overwhelmed by the enthusiasm they have for their industry. Everyone who gives up their time to learn more about their job should be rewarded, and at Red Gate we like to do just that. Red Gate has long supported the SQL community through sponsorship to facilitate user group meetings and community events, but it's only though face-to-face contact that we really get a chance to see the impact of our support. I hope we'll have the chance to see you on the road at some point this year.   I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. • How does RAM fail?

  I have an issue with a Dell Inspiron 15 (1545) laptop that refuses to open any applications (save select Microsoft programs, e.g. Security Essentials, Ctrl Panel, Windows Explorer (not Internet), regedit, Event Viewer, etc.). I've run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics Tool and it found a 'hardware problem was detected.' Does this indicate that the RAM has failed? I notice when I open programs like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, etc., it always give me an error from WerFault.exe saying The instruction at xxxxxxx referenced memory at xxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written. and sometimes something about illegal instructions. If it is a hardware problem, does this mean that replacing the RAM is my only option? Again, I would also like to know if RAM can fail (like hard drives) and if malware can cause RAM to fail also.

  A playlist is a group of songs or media files that are grouped together based on a theme. Today we’ll look at how to create your own custom playlists in Windows Media Player 12. Create Custom Playlists Open Windows Media Player and switch to the Library view. Click on the Play tab at the top right to reveal the List pane.   If you currently have songs listed on the List pane, you can remove them by clicking Clear list.   To add songs to your playlist, right-click on the song title, select Add to, and then click Play list. You can also drag and drop the song title right onto the play list area. Hold down the Control [Ctrl] key while clicking to select more than one track at a time.   Changing the Playlist Order You can click and drag each item in your playlist to move it up or down.   You can also right click on the title and select Move up or Move down, or to completely remove a track from your playlist. You have the option to shuffle your list by clicking the Options list icon and selecting Shuffle list from the dropdown list. By selecting Sort list by you can sort by Title, Artist, Album, Release date, and more. Saving and naming your playlist To save your playlist, click on the Save list button. You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your playlist in the text box. Click away when you are finished. Windows Media Player will display your most recent playlists in the Navigation panel.   Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden.   I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the hardware virtualization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that I need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? Is there another way besides from the startup?

If you have been wanting an independent tasks list then join us as we look at the Tasks extension for Google Chrome. Tasks in Action As soon as you have finished installing the extension you are ready to start adding new tasks to your list. Enter your task into the “Text Area” and press “Enter” to add the task to the list. Note: Your tasks list will be retained (in the order you set) when you close and then reopen your browser. In just moments you can have your task list ready to go. Notice that there is also a “numerical indicator” attached to the “Toolbar Button” so that you will always know how many tasks you have left to complete. You can use the “drag and drop” function to rearrange your list into a more proper order if needed. When you are finished with a task all that you will need to do is click on the “Checkmark” to remove it from the list. If you need to make a new entry similar to an existing one simply right click and the text is automatically pasted into the “Text Area”.   I've got an old laptop that is running Windows 2000 & Windows 98 in a multi-boot configuration. I need to add MS-DOS to that list of startup options. I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice. • Thoughts on iPhone, Flash, IE

  It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). In Adobe’s last SEC filing, they list the iPhone/iPad as a threat to their business. http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/796343/000079634310000007/form_10q.htm#riskfactors We offer our desktop application-based products primarily on Windows and Macintosh platforms. We generally offer our server-based products on the Linux platform as well as the Windows and UNIX platforms. I had a conversation recently about IE9 and people were asking why is Microsoft spending money and resources to build IE9 now that we have Silverlight.  It makes just no sense to put so much efforts to support HTML 5 in IE because it’s overlapping with Silverlight, no?  Well, what if Chrome became the dominant browser and all of a sudden, Google would remove the object tag?  Would Microsoft be in the same position as Adobe is right now on the iPhone?
