• iTerm2 vim cannot map alt key

  I'm having trouble trying to map the alt-key bindings on vim in iTerm2. I want to map shortcuts for switching between buffers like this: map <A-Right> <C-w>l map <A-Left> <C-w>h map <A-Down> <C-w>j map <A-Up> <C-w>k But I can't get it to work. I've tried everything, setting the option key as "Normal", "Meta" and "+Esc" in the profile settings. I've tried <M-Right> and <T-Right> but those don't work either. There are posts on superuser and stackoverflow but they use the old version of iTerm2 (v0.x). The only things I've managed to get working are <T-up> and <T-down>, or when I just use Macvim. I'm using iTerm2 v1.0.0.20120203, and Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Macbook Pro.

• Proxy auto-config dnsResolve doesn't seem to resolve subdomains

  We're running on a Windows domain, and have a DNS to control computer names on our intranet. The following PAC works great for basic hostnames on our intranet - but we're setting up some subdomain-like names (example, redesign.buildbox), and it isn't resolving these. These subdomains are resolvable through other means (such as nslookup). Other than checking to see if the host has ".buildbox" or other domain, is there a way to make it work? • Generic/Text Printer on Windows 7 not prompting for file name

  Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix? • should i and how do i backup my database for a webapp that is hosted on amazon ec2 server?

  I set up an amazon ec2 instance using ubuntu server edition. I install LAMP stack on it. I did up a php web app running on mysql. I have not officially launched, but I need to know this before launching. Should I backup my database data? If so, how should I do it as cost effective as possible? Previously for another web app, i wrote a perl or bash script (cannot remember) that will be executed by cron on a daily basis. The script will then backup the database into a single .sql file and send as email attachment to my gmail account. That web app was on shared hosting hence, I was quite sure i needed to do backup of my database. My files are on git repo so I am not worried about that. Please advise. I am totally unfamiliar with AWS. Only know as much as setting up an account. That is all. Thank you.

• Mac, VNC and multiple monitors

  I asked a similar question here before but apparently I wasn't as clear as I had expected by the responses. That said, I'll try again. I have a Mac Pro with quad monitors which I would like to access remotely. I've been using VNC for this (either via screen sharing or a dedicated VNC client), which works, but the VNC protocol matches the physical layout/resolutions of attached monitors. One of the things I like about Microsoft's Remote Desktop (Terminal Server) client is that when you connect, it blanks out the local screens and sets the resolution to a client-specified setting. In other words, when natively running Windows, even though I'm running a physical 30" monitor flanked by 2 24" monitors as well as a 21" Cintiq monitor, I can set the Remote Desktop resolution to match my notebook's screen giving me a native, single-monitor configuration. As soon as I disconnect (and you log back in locally), the desktop un-blanks and the resolution resets back to the four physically attached monitors. Again, VNC works and yes I know I can use 5901, 5902...n to attach VNC to a specific monitor as opposed to the entire desktop, but I'm still at the mercy of trying to look at a 2560x1600 resolution on a 1280x800 screen. I'm left with either scaling (everything's too small) or panning/scrolling (it's like playing hide-and-seek with your documents!) SO... anyone know of any Mac-based remote software (client and server) that will let me connect to my Mac Pro and reset the resolution by the client, just like you can in Windows, or am I SOL?

• Windows Vista/7 dropping Mac Server share points

  My Windows Vista and Windows 7 clients are having problems maintaining access to SMB shares on a Mac server. The initial connection to the server appears to be OK, as the Windows clients can see all of the server share points. However, the client randomly drops a couple of the server share points although the clients can still see the server. For example. If I have the following share points on the Mac server: Share A Share B Share C Share D Share E The Windows client can see these shares most of the time and can access them most of the time. But randomly a couple of the shares will just get dropped or go missing from the Windows client's ability to view them so I end up with something like: Share B Share D Share E All the share points are established int the same way with the same permission settings. My Mac OSX Server is set up with the following for SMB: SMB sharing enabled Standalone Server Workgroup of `CORPORATE` Allow Guest Access = YES Client connections limit = 100 Authentication: NTLMv2 & Kerberos and NTLM Code Page is Latin US (437) This is a workgroup master browser WINS registration is set to Enable WINS server (tried with setting off) Enable virtual share points for homes YES I noticed in my SMB file service log that the clients appear to connect OK, but I get the following error which implies a reset by either the server or the client: /SourceCache/samba/samba-187.9/samba/source/lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.0.99. = Connection reset by peer I am a bit stumped as to a direction to turn to try and get this to resolve. Continued attempts to access the server from the client will reconnect to the share points, but they inevitably get dropped again in the near future. Any and all help much appreciated.

• Upgrading only certain packages via the getdeb repo

  I'm a bit confused about how getdeb.net works now. The last time I got a package from there was a while ago; at that point the procedure was that you would just download a .deb for each package that you wanted to install/upgrade and then install it using dpkg -i. However the inexorable march of progress has lent its trumpets to this system as well, and getdeb installs are now done via their repo, which is registered with apt in /etc/apt/sources.list.d, after you install a single package that makes the changes to the apt database. I've installed that package, and I've discovered that aptitude dist-upgrade now wants to upgrade a lot of packages on my system that weren't ready for upgrades prior to the installation of the getdeb package. If I rename the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list to something with a different extension, then do aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade, it stops wanting to upgrade packages. So I gather that the default behaviour is now to upgrade all packages to the version available at getdeb. This is not particularly appropriate, since these packages are not as well tested as the officially released versions. Is there a config setting somewhere that will prevent upgrading packages to versions from the getdeb repo unless this action is specifically selected? I'd like to be able to pick and choose what packages are upgraded via getdeb.

• Accessing clearcase view drive from virtual machine is slow

  I have a windows XP virtual machine running under a Windows XP host. On the host : On the host clearcase 7.1.1.2 is installed. I have a dynamic view mapped onto some drive. The view has certain VOB/directory structure where my application DLLs from the nightly build and config files are stored. I run my application on the host machine which uses the DLLs and config files from the VOB and everything runs smooth. Now I want to move this set-up to a virtual machine. On the guest : I'm running the guest with a vm-player. I don't want to install clear-case on this as I don't want to expose this machine onto the network. The network setting in the guest is 'host-only'. I have mapped the host's clearcase view drive as a shared folder and I'm able to access this drive from the virtual machine. Also, the application is running. However, the problem is that the access of the clearcase drive from the virtual machine is very slow. I can experience this from the windows explorer. Due to this, the starting of my application takes several seconds in the virtual machine while on the guest it comes up pretty fast. My question is : Is there any way to speed up the performance? I have managed to copy some of the DLLs which don't change frequently to the virtual machine to improve the performance. However, there are still lot of DLLs which have to be taken from the clearcase drive as they change frequently. • Can I boot up a virtual machine natively?

  My question is: Is is possible to run a virtual machine natively on your hardware if you have installed the proper drivers etc? In other words, can I use a VHD as a regular hard drive to boot from? The reason I want to do this is that I do both graphics-intensive and audio-intensive work, but my computer is not powerful enough to handle both at the same time and many times I install a bunch of audio programs that I don't want affecting the stability of my graphics programs. Basically I wanted to have sandboxing between the two sets of applications. So I tried running the graphics-intensive programs in a VirtualBox VM and the audio-intensive work natively (simply because it's a pain to route ASIO audio devices in/out of VirtualBox). This kind-of works - the graphics-intensive stuff is tolerable, but still relatively slow, because it's running inside a VM. So my next idea was to just dual-boot and install the graphics and audio programs in separate partitions but I frequently use them in tandem, so it wouldn't be practical to reboot my machine every time I need to use the other set of programs. But I could live with this scenario: If I need to do more audio-intensive stuff, I'll just boot up to the audio partition and run the graphics programs in a VM, and then when I'm working heavily on the graphics part, I'll just boot the graphics partition as a regular OS directly on the hardware. Is this possible? For example by booting up a VHD as a regular hard drive? Or by setting up dual-boot, and every time the audio partition is shut down, synchronize the graphics VM VHD with the native graphics partition? Is it practical, given the above scenario? And if it's not possible, barring buying another computer, can anyone suggest a best-of-all-worlds setup (the two worlds being performance, sandboxing, and running in parallel) for the above scenario?   Hi all, For my PHP & mySQL based application, I am trying to buy website hosting from a host who does not have a limit on the number of files I carry in my hosting account. Almost all the websites have a common limit of 50,000 files (some websites call it 50,000 nodes). The rest(to the extent of my search) are not even close. I have gone through the various websites, Googled lot of information, have spoken with the customer service of the hosting companies and they said that they have a limit of 50,000 files and that's why they call it the LIMIT. Now I have my application, which is a kind of social networking website, where people can upload various files of varying file size. So say if 50,000 users were to join the website and upload 1 file each, the limit of 50,000 will be reached very easily and my 50,001 customer will start facing file upload problems (& so will my account). So I would like to know if there's any website hosting services that do NOT levy such restrictions. In summary, I need the following options: No maximum file limit (more than 50,000 files in account). No maximum file upload limit in server setting (10MB, 12MB, 15MB, 20MB, etc.). Ability to upload files of various types (zip, flv, jg, png, etc.). Ability to stream Audio and Video (live audio & video not necessary). Access to .htaccess Access to php.ini, my.cnf or my.ini (this would be a plus) Supports SSL. Provides dedicated hosting(& IP) as well. Monthly payments without contracts are a plus. I get message like this: Buildfile: build.xml does not exist! Build failed then download java server from https://github.com/WillowIT/Pentaho-...rver/build.xml and then copied to Ubuntu share folder and then on command form, i goto extracted path which is share folder i mentioned and executed command "ant war " and i got error message : BUILD FAILED /share/java_server/build.xml:18: problem: failed to create task or type antlibrg:apacge.ivy.ant:retrieve cause: The name is undefined. Action:Check the spelling. Action:Check that any custom taks/types have been declared Action:Check that any /declarations have taken place. No types or taks have been defined in this namespace yet This appears to be an antlib declaration. Sampling the process points back to the MAMP mysqld.. wtf?! About to throw MAMP out the window and boot up a VM of CentOS =)

• Permissions in OS X for iTunes library with multiple users

  I currently have a lot of music on an external drive and my iTunes set up from there. However, periodically, when the external drive isn't connected, iTunes will default back to the library location of my home directory user path. I don't want to mess with an external drive, as my Mac's HD is large enough to house the music collection. However, I have 4 family members – all with their own logins – using this same gob of music. I don't want four copies of the library, only one with all libraries referencing it. So, what I want to do is: Move all music files to a shared directory at /Macintosh HD/users/music. I created this directory and adjusted permissions, so all four users can read and write to this directory. Get all four accounts to reference this library instead of the external or local home locations I am hoping I can just check the box to keep library organized in my account, which is the admin and let iTunes move it all. Then delete current libraries for each account and re-add from the new shared location. Will the iTunes organization process cause permissions issues either by setting permissions to all the files access to my account only or write permissions or any other 'gotcha'? I am having a hard time coming up with a smooth solution that won't break everything and cause me to have mega duplicates or access issues. I would prefer not to do any XML library file editing if possible. Am I dreaming?

• Postfix additional transports - is it working?

  I have enabled two additional transports in my postfix config to deal with recipient domains that demand connection limiting, per the instructions here at serverfault. However, I have no idea if this is working or not; in fact, I think it is not working, due to the send speeds I am seeing in the logs. How might I determine if my additional transports are working? If they aren't, do you have any tips on figuring out why? And, do you have any comments on my particular configuration? (am I a bucket of fail?) I have enabled the additional transports in master.cf: smtp inet n - - - - smtpd careful unix - - n - 10 smtp -o smtp_connect_timeout=5 -o smtp_helo_timeout=5 cautious unix - - n - - smtp -o smtp_connect_timeout=5 -o smtp_helo_timeout=5 I have set up the transport mapping file /etc/postfix/transport: hotmail.com cautious: yahoo.com careful: gmail.com cautious: earthlink.net cautious: msn.com cautious: live.com cautious: aol.com careful: I have set up the transport mapping and some connection-limiting settings in main.cf: transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport careful_initial_destination_concurrency = 5 careful_destination_concurrency_limit = 10 cautious_destination_concurrency_limit = 50 Finally, I have run converted the transport file to a db per the postfix docs: #> postmap /etc/postfix/transport And then restarted postfix. I do see my transport_maps setting when I run postconf, but I do not see any of the transport-specific settings ('careful_xxx_yyy_zzz'). • Disable Certain Firefox Plugins System-wide by Default

  I have firefox installed system-wide for all our users. Unfortunately the Adobe Reader Plug-in is rather flakey and doesn't work some of the time. As a result I want to disable the plug-in by default for all our users, but still allow them to enable it if they want via the standard Tools-Add-ons-Plug-ins menu option. How can I have this plug-ins enabled/disabled status be disabled by default? I've been able to configure system-wide configurations before by setting preferences in the mozilla root folder file defaults/pref/all.js, but enabled/disabled plugins doesn't appear to be configured in the preferences. [edit 1]: I found 'How to manage firefox plugins in pluginreg.dat file' which explained some of the formatting of the pluginreg.dat file. • How to host an ssh server?

  Hi, I have a broadband internet connection. I have an wireless modem (Airtel India). I don't have a static ip address. I want to host a ssh/web/ftp server to be visible to the outside world just for testing and learning purpose so I can ask my friend to connect to my current ip address and test. My modem has an admin interface which allows to port forward and open ports. I set up ssh server as shown and checked if port 22 is open using this website , Port Scan And port 22 is open. I have an openssh server running and it works if i do, ssh [email protected] which is my local ip address but doesn't work if i do ssh [email protected] where 122.xx.xx.xx is my external ip address of my modem which i checked from whatismyipaddress.com. Since it looks like the port is open, I wonder if there is some setting I need to change in my server config to expose my server. How should I go about solving this?

• Telugu (unicode) font rendering in emacs

My question at stackoverflow had two small images showing the example rendering of text. As a new user at superuser, I am not being allowed to include them here, nor I am allowed to post more than one hyperlink. And, I don't have enough reputation on SO to migrate that question. Please look at the stackoverflow question for the images. Sorry about the inconvenience.] I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. • Windows 8.1 in a VMWare Workstation 10 guest's mouse is missing, but only sometimes

  I have VMWare Workstation 10 running on a Windows 7 machine, hosting a k guest OS. Before upgrading to WS 10 I was using version 9, and the Win8 guest OS ran without difficulty or error conditions. Since upgrading and installing the most current VMWare Tools inside the guest after upgrading to version 10, there are circumstances where the mouse pointer is not visible; the mouse position appears stuck at a screen location which is not the center of the virtualized display; and mouse click and scrolling events still get processed. Once this begins happening I have to reboot the host machine to get it to stop. (VMWare Tools 9.6.1 build-1378637 is what the WS 10 software installed) The problem seems to correlate with whether the mouse is captured during Win 8.1's bootup process, before control is passed to the login screen. If I explicitly click the mouse into the guest OS and move it slowly around while the system is booting, then I see the mouse after clicking to lift the first screen and expose the password prompt, and there is never a problem within the guest. If I don't do this during bootup, there is no mouse pointer, with the symptoms listed above. I have tried removing and reinstalling VMWare tools, and the other steps published for "mouse problems" from VMWare's chaotic troubleshooting database. The problem persists. Is there a setting in the virtual machine's configuration which could prevent this behavior?

• Netgear router is not resolving hostnames

  Not sure what the problem is, but I am used to being able to access other clients on my LAN via their hostname. We got a new router from plusnet (Netgear WNR1000v3) and now this has stopped working. For instance, if I were to run a web server from one computer with the hostname TomPC usually I could go into a browser and type http://TomPC and I would get the web server front page. I can access it by using the LAN ip of the machine. e.g. http://192.168.1.1 works fine. I thought it would be a simple option in the admin panel of the router - possibly I had to turn on DNS/DCHP or something. But I can't see anything, and my searches on the internet seem to turn up ridiculous solutions involving setting up a dedicated DNS server on my LAN. This is just a small home network - really I just want to be able to access my Raspberry PI on the network without having to work out the IP address every time. (I know I could just set a static IP address for it, but using its hostname would be much easier). DCHP is enabled in the LAN settings part, although RIP is disabled (I don't know what the latter is) I don't know if this has anything to do with it? Many thanks!

  I'm trying to create a VM, using VMWare Player, with an ISO image of Ubuntu Server 12.04 (LTS). The machine I'm doing the installation on has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU, and runs 64-bit Windows 7 I managed to create the VM (gave username, password, configured network etc), but I can't install Ubuntu Server. First I get this alert : Binary translation is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Disabling long mode. Without long mode support, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code. For more details see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. When I click OK, I get another alert : This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host supports Intel VT-x, but Intel VT-x is disabled. Intel VT-x might be disabled if it has been disabled in the BIOS/firmware settings or the host has not been power-cycled since changing this setting. (1) Verify that the BIOS/firmware settings enable Intel VT-x and disable 'trusted execution.' (2) Power-cycle the host if either of these BIOS/firmware settings have been changed. (3) Power-cycle the host if you have not done so since installing VMware Player. (4) Update the host's BIOS/firmware to the latest version. • Mount EC2 instance via SSH on Mac OS X

  OK I just can't figure this out. I have an EC2 instance, which I'm able to SSH into just fine with: ssh -i XXXX.pem [email protected] I can even make it slick from the command line by creating a ~/.ssh/config with this in it: Host XXXX HostName XXXX User ubuntu IdentityFile ~/.ec2/XXXX.pem Which allows me to simple do a ssh XXXX with no -i option. Now, I want to mount this via SSH. I've tried MacFuse/SSHFS, MacFusion and ExpandDrive, but no luck. It's supposed to "just work" but the SSH-related command line utilities and the Keychain Access program in OS X is confusing and opaque to me. From what I've read, these GUI programs don't care about .ssh/config, they care about the Keychain. Somehow I can associate my domain name I'm connecting to with a particular "identity" private key file (.pem file) but I have no idea how. I tried this: ssh-add -K XXXX.pem Which does add to the Keychain but it's not associated to a particular domain. These GUI mounting programs I mentioned all just spin and do nothing when I try to connect passwordless. No keychain prompt, no nothing. I've pretty much given up and I'm thinking about just setting up an SMB server, but I'd rather just go over SSH since I believe it's possible.

• How can I remove all drivers and other files related to a USB Mass Storage device?

  I have a flash drive here that does not work on one OS on computer - let's call it the desktop Windows 7. It works fine on another computer - laptop Windows 7. It also works fine on Windows 8 on the same desktop computer. Other flash drives work fine under desktop Windows 7. So not a hardware issue, not a generic USB Mass Storage driver issue. It's something specific to this drive. On desktop Windows 7, I can connect the drive but no volume comes up under Windows Explorer. Ditto for Disk Management. With diskpart, loading hangs until I unplug the drive, if I replug it and try list disk it hangs again. If I unplug the drive at this point, list disk prints out all attached drives - including the just removed flash drive. The drive consistently appears under Device Manager, but uninstalling the drivers, restarting and reinstalling the drivers (by inserting the drive) only works for the first insertion. After that it fails again. I get the feeling that the driver files are not actually removed, and are corrupted, meaning every reinstall it's the same corrupted drivers being installed. Is there any way to remove these drivers completely? Or perhaps some other setting Windows 7 retains? Formatting the drive through another computer/OS does not help. I've also tried a complete wipe and rebuild of the MBR and single partition. The allocation unit size makes no difference; neither does a NTFS format. This is a relatively small matter, and I would not like to reinstall the entire OS!

• Need to restore emails that Outlook deleted from the mail server

  I wanted to use POP mail for my Yahoo mail account. So I went to the Yahoo mail settings and enabled POP feature. I installed Microsoft Outlook 2007 and added the settings for my Yahoo mail account. Then I performed a sync. I successfully received all the emails from Yahoo account into my pc. But when I logged into my Yahoo mail online, to my horror all the mails were deleted. It seems someone in Microsoft for some reason decided to keep the default setting unchecked for "Leave copy of messages on the server". This has been a very old account and I need to have all the mails also present on the mail server so I can access it anytime and future purposes. Is there anyway I can restore these emails on the server again? Any ideas how I can get it back to the way it was? I have been googling this for quite sometime now but I'm not able to find it. Any helpful suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

• Dual-head monitor system Kubuntu 10.04

  I have a notebook Asus V6X00V with 1400*1050 monitor(name: LVDS) and Dell Monitor 1920*1080 (VGA-0). I want to have a dual monitor system. At MS Windows everything is working fine. During the Kubuntu installation the Dell and the main notebook monitors have a right resolutions(1920*1080 & 1400*1050). But after some stage it have been changed to the 1152*864 for both. Now the right resolution is only during turning off process and when I am using the console. So it shows that system can use this resolutions. The problem is just in a settings. I am using Size & Orientation - System Settings for setting adjustment. Any option that changes resolution for any monitor or changing position(Absolute, Left Of, Right of and so on) cause the color line noise on the screens. I have tried xrandr: xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1400x1050 --pos 0x0 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS --pos 1400x0 but have received the same result. I have find out that for example the previous version of Randr(1.2, now I have xrandr 1.3) need a xorg.conf file modification to create a big virtual screen, but kubuntu 10.4 don't have xorg.conf and I don't know should I modify xorg for 1.3 version of xrandr or not. Please help me to solve this problem

• Configuring IE to resolve DNS at the proxy rather than locally.

  With the intention of tunneling web traffic through an SSH connection, the following has been done: I've manually configured a PAC file in IE7 in the LAN Settings dialog. I've verified that traffic is routed through my SSH tunnel that is setup for SOCKS5 dynamic port forwarding. I see that IE7 is always trying to resolve the name locally first. What I'm looking for is the ability to have the DNS name resolved at the proxy, rather than locally by the browser. There's a setting in Firefox that specifies DNS remote resolution, and Safari does it automatically. I've verified correct operation for these 2 other browsers. It would be nice if I could get IE to work also. This is for reference so you could understand where does the question originate from. Notice: The question was actually found by the help of google but with no answers available. Considering how it is exactly my question I figured I should just copy/paste over here because I don't think I could describe any better (there is a small introduction though).
