• Debugging different projects in VS6

  Hi, I have 3 projects in a VS6 workspace. One is the main program, which calls - depending on configuration - one or both other progams. To call the other programs a exe is executed. If I want to debug and set breakpoints in one of the subsequent programs, I get an error that breakpoints could not be set and have been deactivated. Are there any VS6 settings I can check? This is a legacy tool and neither the architecture nor VS6 can be changed. To make things worse I am not very familiar with VS6.

• Mutex takes a long while to unlock

  I have two threads. First one is something like this: while(1) { pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex); //DO WORK pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex); pthread_yield(); } The second one locks the mutex on user event, change some settings and unlocks. Thread one does ~ 200 iterations a second. However on occasion it takes the second thread up to 3 seconds to get active (to unlock the mutex). How do I ensure faster response?

• Show extra info for Preference screens when CheckboxPreference summary field is not enough long?

  I have situation when you can enabled/disable modules for my Android application. For this I use a CheckboxPreference screen. This is all good, but the summary field gets cut off if longer descriptions are added than 2 lines. Suppose I have 4-5 lines of description available for each module, I would like to display this in a helper window. I tried to bind a click event to the CheckboxPreference, but that fires for the whole line, so not only when the checkbox is clicked, and more, where ever you click on the line the checkbox is toggled. So now I am wondering if this can be fixed. So if the user needs more info, just taps the text and the helper opens up, and if want to toggle the settings it taps the checkbox. How would you do it? I am open to other ideas too, if they do work.

• Wordpress custom post_type templates

  We are currently working on a Wordpress page that reuses data from another Application. To keep things clean, but still use most wordpress features, we decided to use custom post_type settings (register_post_type) for this data. Now the Problem is, that while accessing these Posts is no problem, the Permalink's to them fail with 404's. We currently work around this issue by adding an action to the "template_redirect" hook that essentially performs a query_posts for the name and our custom types. If query_posts found something we load our custom post templates with locate_template. Although this is working, it does not look like a clean solution - can anyone here propose a better way to tackle our problems?

• Where to handle fatal exceptions

  I am considering a design where all fatal exceptions will be handled using a custom UncaughtExceptionHandler in a Swing application. This will include unanticipated RuntimeExceptions but also custom exceptions which are thrown when critical resources are unavailable or otherwise fail (e.g. a settings file not found, or a server communication error). The UncaughtExceptionHandler will do different things depending on the specific custom exception (and one thing for all the unanticipated), but in all cases the application will show the user an error message and exit. The alternative would be to keep the UncaughtExceptionHandler for all unanticipated exceptions, but handle all other fatal scenarios close to their origin. Is the design I'm considering sound, or should I use the alternative?

I have deployed the application in the server.I am using windows service 2003 as the server.I am able to read the excel file only if i set the set the security settings to "network service" for the microsoft excel application in the control panel -- administrative tools -- componetn service -- computer -- My computer -- DCOM config -- microsoft excel application . Why is it so . There are also other applications running in the server. 1) Doing like this will create any issue ? 2) Why do we need to do it ? 3) Is there any alternative way to do it ? 4) What are we doing actually by providing network service access ?   What do I lose if I skip the .metadata/ directory when doing the back-up of my eclipse workspace? (is there some documentation describing what eclipse stores in this directory)? I've noticed that it changes very often (essentially every time that I use eclipse (galileo). I've seen this question, but I'm not interested in doing a back-up of plug-ins and settings (also because I'm not sure that they would work properly when restored after a re-installation of my PC or on a new PC). I'm just interested in doing a back-up of my projects (source code, libraries, possible data, .svn and .git directories). So, can I safely ignore the .metadata/ directory?

• BlackBerry project version number

  I have a BlackBerry Java project in Eclipse. It has version number written down in four different spots: in the project properties, under "BlackBerry Project Settings/General" in the JAD file, under MIDlet-1 in the JAD file, under MIDlet-Version in the ALX file, under <version> And they seem uncorrelated. Changing either of these affects none of the rest. The third one is what the users sees during over-the-air setup and under Options/Advanced. Questions - why do we need all these? Are there contexts where numbers 1, 2, 4 come up? It's my understanding that the ALX is generated during compilation - where does the version # come from? Is there a way to learn at least one of those programmatically (without signing the app)?

  I'm not sure if I understand this code or if I'm using it right, but I was under the impression that in an ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX website I could run javascript like: var c = Sys.CultureInfo.CurrentCulture and it would give me the culture/language settings the user had specified in their browser at the time of the visit. However, for me, it always comes back 'en-US' no matter what language I pick in firefox or IE. This serverside code however: string[] languages = HttpContext.Current.Request.UserLanguages; if (languages == null || languages.Length == 0) return null; try { string language = languages[0].ToLowerInvariant().Trim(); return CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture(language); } catch (ArgumentException) { return null; } does return the language I have currently set. But I need to do this clientside, because I need to parse a string into a datetime and do some validations before I postback, and the string could be a MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY, or some other such thing. What am I missing?

• NSURL not instantiating properly

  Hi, I am new to IPhone developing. I have got very strange issue with NSURL which is driving me crazy. I want to instantiate NSURL object to use it in loading image. But instantiation never happens in proper way. It always says my url in invalid. Basically I use code like below: NSString *str = @"http://google.com"; NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:str]; but I also have tried a lot of different modifications (with CFStringRef + CFURLCreateStringByAddingPercentEscapes and so on). All of them are not working for me. In debugger url is set to "Invalid". What it could be? I don't think this is algorithmic or environment issue. It could be about some settings? Have anyone any idea of what happens?

  Hello, I'm very new to the JavaScript library world. I have used JS by itself before to create a mini social network but this is the first time I use a JS library and I really don't know how to go about this. I'm planning to use Google Closure and I'm really not sure how I should go about organizing the code. Should I put everything in one file since it's a web app and should have one screen? Should I separate the code to many chunks and put them in different files? Or should I put different dialogs (like settings) in a separate page and thus a separate file? Like all programmers I'm a perfectionist so please help me out with this one, thanks.

• Rails migrations: Undo default setting for a column

I have the problem, that I have an migration in Rails that sets up a default setting for a column, like this example: def self.up add_column :column_name, :bought_at, :datetime, :default => Time.now end Suppose, I like to drop that default settings in a later migration, how do I do that with using rails migrations? My current workaround is the execution of a custom sql command in the rails migration, like this: def self.up execute 'alter table column_name alter bought_at drop default' end But I don't like this approach, because I am now dependent on how the underlying database is interpreting this command. In case of a change of the database this query perhaps might not work anymore and the migration would be broken. So, is there a way to express the undo of a default setting for a column in rails?   I have a "Game" class which holds all the games settings and manages the game. I have a "Grid" class which is the grid the game is played on. The "Game" class initializes a "Grid" object as one of its members (passing itself ("this") as one of the parameters for "Grid"s constructor).. The "Grid" object therefor needs to deal with a "Game*" pointer. To do this it needs to know what "Game" is; i need to declare it before "Grid". But "Game" uses "Grid"...so it also needs "Grid" declared before it. so confused on how to include headers/etc correctly here..

• How to enable other languages for MailChimp List Subscribe Plugin?

  I have translated the MailChimp provided MailChimp List Subscribe Form plugin for wordpress. I used poEdit to edit. At wp-config.php I have language set as ar_SA. Which works for the themes I have used in two Bilingual sites. But the mo file had to be renamed to ar.mo I got two problems: While updating the catalog poEdit crashes. But I could save the .po and generated .mo successfully. The translated .mo doesn't appear for the confirmation success or error messages through the Ajax calls which its supposed to.   I use FtpWebRequest to do some FTP stuff and I need to connect directly (no proxy). However WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy contains IE proxy settings (I reckon). WebRequest request = WebRequest.Create("ftp://someftpserver/"); // request.Proxy is null here so setting it to null does not have any effect WebResponse response = request.GetResponse(); // connects using WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy My code is a piece in a huge application and I don't want to change WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy because it is global static property and it can have adverse impact on the other parts of the application. • Are entities cached in jpa by default ?

  Hello, I add entity to my database and it works fine. But when i retrieve the List, i get the old entity, the new entities i add are not shown until i undeploy the application and redeploy it again. This means are my entities cached by default? But, I haven't made any settings for caching entities in my persistence.xml or any such file. I have even tried calling flush(), refresh() and merge(). But still it shows the old entities only. Am i missing something? Please help me.

  I am trying to emulate a web browser in order to execute JavaScript code and then parse the DOM. The System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser object does not give me the functionality I need. It let's me set the headers, but you cannot set the proxy or clear cookies. Well you can, but it is not ideal and messes with IE's settings. I've been extending the WebBrowser control pinvoking native windows functions so far, but it is really one hack on top of another. I can mess with the proxy and also clear cookies and such, but this control has its issues as I mentioned. I found something called WebKit .NET (http://webkitdotnet.sourceforge.net/), but I don't see support for setting proxies or cookie manipulation. Can someone recommend a c++/.NET/whatever library to do this: Basically tell me what I need to do to get an interface to similar this in .NET: string FetchBrowserParsedHtml(Uri url, WebProxy p, int timeoutSeconds, byte[] headers, byte[] postdata); void ClearCookies(); I am not responsible for my actions.

  I've seen a lot of questions about the merits of WPF here, and essentially every answer says it's the bee's knees, but essentially every answer also talks about things like XAML, in many cases graphic designers and Expression Blend etc. My question is, is it worth getting into WPF if you're a solo coder working in C# only? Specifically, I don't have a graphic designer, nor any great talent in that area myself; I don't use point-and-click tools; I write everything in C#, not XML. Winforms works fine in those conditions. Is the same true of WPF, or does it turn out that important functions can only be done in XAML, the default settings aren't intended for actual use and you have to have a graphic designer on the team to make things look good, etc., and somebody in my position would be better off to stick to Winforms?

  I couldn't find any close answers to this, so I'm consulting the experience of SO users: Scenario: I have two small C# winforms applications where one behaves as a server or host, the other as a client. They share data via SQL Server, in terms of configuration settings. I am currently launching the client application (which only needs to run periodically) from the server application via Process.Start() and terminating it via Process.CloseMainWindow() (after finding it in the process list). While it seems clean enough, I wondered if there's a better way. Question: Which way would be best to instruct the client application to shut down: Continue using Process.CloseMainWindow()? Implement WCF between the applications? (I would need help on how to do this.) Set a variable in SQL that the client application checks for? Some other way?

• Can I assign a maven dependency to a specific repo?

  So I have several large projects that use up to 8 different external repos, all specified in settings.xml rather than in poms. A lot of our internal dependencies are snapshots, so this obviously causes a lot of checking for updates across several external repos, when they are all in our internal repo. So my question is, is there a way to setup a profile/filter or anything similar where I can ensure that an update will only be checked for in a specific repo(s)? • Eclipse Project Files to .exe or Runnable Jar

  I am able to create the runnable jar using the export feature. However, it does not behave like it does in eclipse. When my program first starts, launch settings are displayed. I can see this. However, when I want to actually launch the meat of the program, it doesn't show up. It seems to not look at all my class files or something. I have tried Far Jar but that didn't work... I have triend JSmooth but still just ran the one frame If I can make this a runnable jar that works or even a .exe, that would be great!
