• WPF MediaElement pauses when trying to play Windows Media Center recording

  I have an WPF application that starts a live tv recording using Windows Media Center, using the Windows Media Center SDK, waits 2 minutes and then plays the currently recording file (.wtv) in a WPF MediaElement. The problem is that the video visual will freeze and it is not consistent on when it happens. I have looked into it and discovered that the timeline is still moving so the MediaElement still thinks that the video is playing. This happens only when trying to play a video file that is currently being recorded, previously recorded shows play just fine. Both Media Center and Media Player can play those files without any hiccups; it is only the WPF MediaElement that has this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

• C/C++ Allegro program causes Windows 7 to switch to Aero Basic

If you aren't sure what I mean, this pops up (I got this from Google, which is why it says Vista rather than Windows 7): 1) Why? 2) How can I ensure that this doesn't happen?

  Hello, I have to create an app that will read in some info from a db, process the data, write changes back to the db, and then send an email with these changes to some users or groups. I will be writing this in c#, and this process must be run once a week at a particular time. This will be running on a Windows 2008 Server. In the past, I would always go the route of creating a windows service with a timer and setting the time/day for it to be run in the app.config file so that it can be changed and only have to be restarted to catch the update. Recently, though, I have seen blog posts and such that recommend writing a console application and then using a scheduled task to execute it. I have read many posts talking to this very issue, but have not seen a definitive answer about which process is better. What do any of you think? Thanks for any thoughts.

• Exceptions and Access Violations in Paint events in Windows

  After executing some new code, my C++ application started to behave strange (incorrect or incomplete screen updates, sometimes no screen updates at all). After a while we found out that the new code is causing an Access Violation. Strange enough, the application simply keeps on running (but with the incorrect screen updates). At first we thought the problem was caused by a "try-catch(...)" construction (put there by an overactive ex-colleague), but several hours later (carefully inspecting the call stacks, adding many breakpoints, ...) we found out that if there's an Access Violation in a paint event, Windows catches it, and simply continues running the application. Is this normal behavior? Is it normal that Windows catches exceptions/errors during a paint event? Is there a way to disable this? (if not, it would mean that we have to always run in the debugger with all exceptions enabled while testing our code). Patrick

  Suppose I want to distribute a Java application. Suppose I want to distribute it as a single executable. I could easily build a .jar with both the application and all its external dependencies in a single file (with some Ant hacking). Now suppose I want to distribute it as an .exe file on Windows. That's easy enough, given the nice tools out there (such as Launch4j and the likes). But suppose now that I also don't want to depend on the end user having the right JRE (or any JRE at all for that matter) installed. I want to distribute a JRE with my app, and my app should run on this JRE. It's easy enough to create a Windows installer executable, and embed a folder with all necessary JRE files in it. But then I'm distributing an installer and not a single-file app. Is there a way to embed both the application, and a JRE, into an .exe file acting as the application launcher (and not as an installer)?

• What Windows editor has CORRECT EOL whitespace handling?

  I'm looking for a Windows text editor for programming that handles EOL whitespace CORRECTLY, which for my idea of correct means: Strip all EOL whitespace on save, EXCEPT on lines that I haven't edited. This is to minimise the amount of EOL whitespace evil in my world, but not pollute SCM diff/blame with whitespace-only fixes (I have to deal with old / other people's code). I have played with TextPad, Notepad++, Kodomo Edit and Programmer's Notepad 2, and found all of them lacking. Also: I don't get along with vi, and I am unsure about Emacs on Windows. @Matti Virkkunen: I could mess with diff, but I want to fix the problem, not the symptoms. Fixing diff means all my, others, and server side diff tools need to be fixed, and doesn't fix space/noise/hash change issues in SCM. Example pet hate using that system: "update" tells me a file has changed. Diff shows no changes.

  I want to create a desktop manager that takes informations of all running applications including states and screenshots to display and manipulate them in my virtual space (probably in 3D). It can be considered as another layer of abstraction on top of Windows itself. Because many native Windows Vista/7 features like Flip 3D and Live Thumbnails are able to show each window's activities in real-time e.g. video keeps playing in taskbar's thumbnail, I think DWM allows an application to redirect its output to somewhere else or some special processes are able to collect other applications' graphical outputs (maybe of child processes only). Has Microsoft released a set of public APIs to do so? If not, is it technically possible? And is it easier if I limit my scope to just .NET applications with WPF?

  Hey guys I actually got an Windows/Java Question. I've got an plugged in Device which I want to access via Java. Normaly u can access an e.g. USB-Stick via the Drive letter... but this Tablet is displayed by Windows as an "Portable Device"... which means, that the Path is sth. like "Computer\Archos 5S" and there is no Drive letter. I want to access a File on this Device via Java, but I am not able to figure out the correct Path to it. There is a similar Question out there, but without a productive answear.   Hi I'm trying to write a console program that reads characters from a file. i want it to be able to read from a Unicode file as well as an ANSI one. how should i address this issue? do i need to programatically distinguish the type of file and read acoordingly? or can i somehow use the windows API data types like TCHAR and stuff like that. The only differnce between reading from the files is that in Unicode i have to read 2 bytes for a character and in ASNSI its 1 byte? im a little lost with this windows API. would appretiate any help thanks

  I basically understand you C++ people, Please do not get distracted because I'm writing in Delphi. I have a stable USB Listing method that accesses all my USB devices I get the devicepath, and this structure: TSPDevInfoData = packed record Size: DWORD; ClassGuid: TGUID; DevInst: DWORD; // DEVINST handle Reserved: DWord; end; I get my ProductID and VenderID successfully from my DevicePath Lists all USB devices connected to the computer at the time That enables me to access the registry data to each device in a stable way. What I'm lacking is a little direction Is friendly name able to be written inside the connected USB Micro chips by the firmware programmer? (I'm thinking of this to identify the device even further, or is this to help identify Bulk data transfer devices like memory sticks and camera's) Can I use SPDRP_REMOVAL_POLICY_OVERRIDE to some how reset these polices What else can I do with the registry details. Identifying when some one unplugs a device The program is using (in windows XP standard) I used a documented windows event that did not respond. Can I read a registry value to identify if its still connected? using CreateFileA (DevicePath) to send and receive data I have read when some one unplugs in the middle of a data transfer its difficult clearing resources. what can IoCreateDevice do for me and how does one use it for that task This two way point of connection status and system lock up situations is very concerning. Has some one read anything about this subject recently? My objectives are to 1. list connected USB devices identify a in development Micro Controller from everything else send and receive data in a stable and fast way to the limits of the controller No lock up's transferring data Note I'm not using any service packs I understand everything USB is in ANSI when windows xp is not and .Net is all about ANSI (what a waste of memory) I plan to continue this project into a .net at a later date as an addition. MSDN gives me Structures and Functions and what should link to what ok but say little to what they get used for. What is available in my language Delphi is way over priced that it needs a major price drop.

  hi there, I have developed a windows application using C# VS 2008 and Sql 2005 express, i have testes the application on my machine and it works fine, my machine is win32 bit, when i tried the application on windows 64bit it keeps giving me an error message on the start of the application,although i installed the sql express on that machine but should i install .NETframwork3.5sp1 64 bit also? , the target machine is widows 7 64bit, also is there a technology or a way to make the application work in the following sequence: 1- the CD is auto run 2- the setup checks for the installed prerequists and install any necessery one without the interference of the user. one last question,should i rebuild the application on an 64 bit machine to make it work on 64 bit machine? thankx

  I want to have the Apple Magic Trackpad to work on Windows, but NOT as a regular Mouse! I will need the normal Trackpad Gestures to work with a c# Application (i.e. when carring out a 2 finger swipe to the left, it will start playing a song...). I guess I´ll have to write my own driver? Is there a way to use Apples MAgic Trackpad Driver for Windows and re-write that one? OR is there any way (API, self-written driver), so that I could just hook the gestures to my Commands?   Hai, I wrote the coding for add / remove the default documents of IIS7 in vb.net 2.0 windows application using Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. The coding is working fine. After adding a new document, the messagebox showing that newly added document name. Simillarly if I remove any document, the messagebox not showing that document name. So that I am saying, the coding is working fine. Now the problem is, I can't see the newly added document name in II7 Manager GUI. The next proplem is, my website not access that newly added document. Please can any body suggest for these problems. What the mistake I did the vb.net 2.0 windows application coding and what are the modifications I need to do? Thanks in advance.

  When I try to build a simple "Hello World" C++ app on Windows 7 Beta, using Visual Studio 2005 (VC++2005) I get a rather generic error C1001 error (Internal compiler error) The compiler seems to just crash, and Windows pops up its (un)helpful This program has stopped working dialog. The file it complains about is mcp1.cpp. Has anyone come across this before? Cheers, Fritz EDIT: The code is: #include <iostream> int main(int argc, char** argv) { std::cout << "Hello!"; return 0; } EDIT 2: I have installed SP1 as well as SP1 for Vista. VS popped up a warning saying it needs SP1 for Vista, but installing it makes no difference. No ideas about what I can possibly do to fix this?

  I wrote a C# application that uses DirectShow to allow users to take photos with the camera attached to a Windows Mobile 6 phone. The problem I spotted out is that the preview functionality stops working after a period of not using it. How could I determine what's causing this ? Is there a timeout in Windows registry that tells how much time the camera should stay on ? This is very strange as my code runs perfect when turning on/off the camera quickly enough (i.e. not letting the camera off more than ~15 seconds).

Now, when I try to create a file using this code : FileStream os = new FileStream(String.Format(folderName, fileName), FileMode.Create); I get Access to filepath is denied. In the service Installer I set the following parameters to : this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Account = System.ServiceProcess.ServiceAccount.LocalSystem; this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Password = "Pass"; this.serviceProcessInstaller1.Username = "Administrator" I added all the possible accounts with Full permissions to the folder where I want to create the file but nothing helped. • php.ini not being read with windows 7 installation

  I have installed php successfully on a Windows 7 machine but I can not for the life of me get it to read the php.ini file. I have uncommented out the line for php to use mysql and when I run phpinfo(), it never shows up. I have checked to make sure there is only one php.ini file on my entire c:\ drive and it's sitting in my c:\windows folder. has anyone else run into this and know of a solution to get php to read the .ini so that I can enable some extensions (mysql etc)?

  I'm developing a long-running multi-threaded Python application for Windows, and I want the process to know the CPU time that each of its threads has taken. I can get the overall times for the entire process with os.times() but I need to know the per-thread times. I know that there are external tools such as the Sysinternals Process Explorer, but my program itself needs to have this information. If I were on Linux, I look in the /proc filesystem, as described here. If I were writing C code, I'd use the GetThreadTimes call, as described here. So how can I accomplish this on Windows using Python?

Can this be achieved on Windows? By that mean - without having to install external tools (like cygwin make); perhaps make.cmd? Typing "make installdeps" for instance, should work both on Unix and Windows.
