• Render a 3D image as a 2D vector image

  Is there any software that will take a 3d model (in any format) and allow you to render it as a 2D vector image (preferable as either an .SVG or .PDF)? My intention is to render LEGO building instructions this way. While there are many tools that let you view them or generate nice, rasterized output, I'd really like to be able to generate vectorized output. Textures are not needed, and hidden line removal may not be needed. I could use a tool that works on any platform (although my preference is OS X, Linux, then Windows). Open source is preferred. If no one knows of a tool that does this, does anyone have a good recommendation of something to hack on and add a feature to output via Cairo?

• Solid Edge ST6 - 2D Modeling: dimensions

  I'm currently making some 2D drawings in Solid Edge ST6. I have several circles which I need to change so that they have an equal diameter and equal space between both circles, etc... Currently my drawing looks a bit messy with all the dimensions that I use: I use the Smart Dimension tool and the Distance Between tool but I have no clue to make my drawing more readable by adding less dimensions. Is there a way to copy/paste dimensions or let a circle follow the dimensions of one other circle? I hope you understand the question. Thanks in advance (I could not find anything about Solid Edge, so I hope superuser is the correct place to ask.)

• Transition from 2D to 3D later in game development

  Hi, I'd like to work on a game, but for rapidly prototyping it, I'd like to keep it as simple as possible, so I'd do everything in top-down 2D in GDI+ and WinForms (hey, I like them!), so I can concentrate on the logic and architecture of the game itself. I thinking about having the whole game logic (server) in one assembly, where the WinForms app would be a client to that game, and if/when the time is right, I'd write a 3D client. I am tempted to use XNA, but I haven't really looked into it, so I don't know if it won't take too much time getting up to speed - I really don't want to spent much time doing other stuff than the game logic, at least while I have the inspiration. But I wouldn't have to abandon everything and transfer to new platform when transitioning from 2D to 3D. Another idea is just to get over it and learn XNA/Unity/SDL/something at least to that level so I can make the same 2D version as I could in GDI+, and I won't have to worry about switching frameworks anymore. Let's just say that the game is the kind where you watch a dude from behind, you run around the gameworld and interact with objects. So the bird's eye perspective could be doable for now. Thanks.

• How to move positions within an array?

  A program that simply moves array elements. Two variables: userInputVariable and blankSpaceVariable. I have a 2D array named table. Defined as table[userInputVariable + 1][6] I am printing out this array in a table format, and the far left column is numbered by whatever number the user entered at the beginning of the program. I then ask the user where they would like to enter a blank space within the array. This blank space acts like a divider for all the other information in the array. For example, if the user enters 10 at the start for the userInputVariable, and then enters 5 for the blank space. Once printed, the numbers should go like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, --, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. My plan has been to create a for loop and try to move all the numbers in the array back a position starting from the blank space variable. What I currently have, but does not work: for (int i = blankSpaceVariable; i < table.length - 1; i++) { table[i] = table[i + 1]; } table[blankSpaceVariable] = "--"; With my current code, the numbers go like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Tried completing this a few different ways also, but the other info within my 2D array didn't move with the numbers. So I thought that this approach can hopefully move all the info within my 2D array down, and make way for a blank section. All help is greatly appreciated!

• Joystick input in Java

  Hi all, I am making a 2D game in Java and I want to use a joystick to control the movement of some crosshairs. Right now I have it so the mouse can control those crosshairs. My only criteria for this is that the control for the crosshair must stay in the game window unless a user clicks off into another window. Basically I want my game to capture whatever device is controlling the crosshairs much like a virtual machine captures a mouse. The joystick I am using (Thrustmaster Hotas Cougar) comes with some pretty advanced features, so that may make this easier (or harder). I have tried the solution listed on this page, but I am using a 64bit computer and for some reason it does not like that. I have also tried to use the key emulation feature of my joystick, but with little success. Here is what I have so far, any pointer would be appreciated. • Flash doesn't connect to socket even though policy allows it

I get no security warnings, which I used to get before the policy server was in place. Still, the connection to port 12869 doesn't work. It's made (I can see with Wireshark and on the server), but no data is sent by Flash. It might be worth knowing that the SWF itself is served from example.com as well.

• BizTalk Server 2013 beta on Windows 8 (with Visual Studio 2012, SQL Server 2012 &amp; ESB Toolkit 2.2)

  Hello BizTalkers, Finally, Microsoft released the beta version of BizTalk Server 2010 R2 and now its called BizTalk Server 2013. I had tried the BTS 2010 R2 CTP version on Windows Azure VM and particularly I was excited about the RESTful services support and ESB fully integrated into BizTalk. Well didn’t get chance to test it much, Azure & VM running cost associated . Anyways, I was waiting for this announcement and I was so much glad that Microsoft finally released the on premise one.  Check what’s new in the BizTalk Server 2013.  Officially Microsoft says that BizTalk Server 2013 “beta” is not supported on Windows 8 but I was curious to try it out. Below is my installation and configuration experience. Virtual Machine configuration: VM Ware Workstation 9.0. Windows 8 Enterprise x64. SQL Server 2012. Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate. BizTalk Server 2013 beta. Windows 8 Machine name: WIN8 Local Administrator account name: Admin First I installed Windows 8 Enterprise on a VM Ware Workstation 9.0 and updated the OS. Even Windows 8 is the new release so luckily didn’t had much updates to perform. Next Installed Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate which was straightforward installation. Next Installed SQL Server 2012. Select New SQL Server stand-alone installation & followed the steps as shown in the screenshot below.   Once the installation is finished, fire up SQL Server Management Studio and try connecting. Initially when the management studio opened up, I thought why did Visual Studio 2010 open when I tried opening SQL Management studio but well, they made the interface alike VS 2010. Cool, I like it. Next is the real deal, download the BizTalk Server 2013 and unzip to particular folder. Double click the Setup.exe and follow the steps in the screenshots. Install Microsoft BizTalk Server 2013 beta. I selected all the normal artifacts and also all the artifacts under Additional Software's. So far so good. Next Launch BizTalk Server Configuration and I used Basic configuration as shown in screenshot below. Didn’t expect to see this but “wala”. Successful in the first shot. Still I wasn’t sure & something would have gone wrong so fired up the BizTalk Server Administration Console and that too came up just fine. Still was not able to believe so created a simple messaging application:  message in –> message out and that too worked just fine. Finally I was convinced that BizTalk Server 2013 did work on Windows 8. Next step was to install the ESB Toolkit 2.2 which is now integrated with BizTalk Server and does not come as a separate standalone installation file. Again run the BizTalk Setup.exe from the unzipped folder. Install Microsoft ESB Toolkit. Next, unlike ESB Configuration would  not open up by itself so go to “Windows 8 so called Start” (I could not resist to write this) and open the ESB Toolkit Configuration wizard. Below screenshot display the configurations I used. Also you can find them on MSDN here. Finally after the ESB Configuration, I open Admin Console and checked the 2 ESB application deployed. Cool. This concludes my experience about installation and configuration of BizTalk Server 2013 Beta & ESB Toolkit 2.2 on Windows 8. • How to add Silverlight 4 ContextMenu to DataGrid row using XAML?

  Silverlight 4 has a new ContextMenu control in the latest toolkit. I can't find any examples anywhere on how to reliably use this ContextMenu on a DataGrid row. Theres a tonne of context menus out there but I want to use the new version from the toolkit. I'd like to be able to set context menus for rows as well as cells. The only way I've found is to manually create the menu on right click and show it, but I'd like to do it in XAML. Note: You need to currently use this workaround in the answer to avoid binding problems.

• Nested AccordionItem. Inner AccordionItem do not expand.

  In Silverlight an AccordionItem is inside another one . When the inner one is selected, it can not expand its parent more which is already expanded to show its own content. I tried to get around it by templating but I was unlucky. • MVVM Light Toolkit throws an System.IO.FileLoadException

  I'm running VS 2010 along with Expression Blend 4 beta. I created a MVVM Light project from the supplied templates and I get a System.IO.FileLoadException when I try to view the MainWindow.Xaml in VS 2010 designer window.   The latest version of Microsoft's ajax library is only available as source code (not a dll). It can be downloaded here: http://ajax.codeplex.com/sourcecontrol/network/Show?projectName=Ajax&changeSetId=49157 Does anyone know how i can actually go about building this into a library like the older (buggy) version? All of the sln files throw errors in visual studio, and after trying to copy the contents of Server\AjaxControlToolkit into a class library im now getting the error Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture.

• Neon toolkit and Gate Web Service

  I am trying to run any of the services from gate web service, in neon 2.3. Even Annie that runs so well in gate doesn't run, or better, it stay for indefinite time processing, a thing that should take no more than a couple of seconds. I run wizard, set input directory, leave file pattern as default and set a folder and name for the output ontology, shouldn't it be enough? Shouldn't i get something, even an error? • Why does Silverlight 4 Tools only give partial intellisense?

  I finally got Silverlight 4 Toolkit installed , referenced and working after the difficulty of finding the right namespace described in this question. But intellisense doesn't work fully: after I type "tk:", it doesn't pop up the various controls I have available, but if I type a control name out, e.g. DockPanel, then it works, as shown below. It will even give me intellisense after I type tk:DropPanel, which is odd. How can I get intellisense to work in all cases for the Silverlight 4 Toolkit? I can imagine I need another namespace, but this site says that this reference: is now all you need (and will be automatically used by both Visual Studio and Blend)

  Hi. We just upgraded to visual studio 2010 RC1 and all of a sudden our controls inside tabcontainer disappeared from the designer file. Actually, it all seemed good in the beginning, the project compiled nicely, but as soon as we did any change in the markup of a page and build the code for the controls inside the tabcontainer disappeared and we got errormessages like so "Error 3 The name 'ddlPeriodicityStartInMonth' does not exist in the current context " Does anyone know if any changes are made to tabcontainer to visual studio 2010 or if this just is a bug? • Can't pass a single parameter to lambda function in MVVM Light Toolkit's RelayCommand

  I don't know if there's a difference between Josh Smith's and Laurent Bugnion's implementations of RelayCommand or not, but everywhere I've looked, it sounds like the Execute portion of RelayCommand can take 0 or 1 parameters. I've only been able to get it to work with 0. When I try something like: public class Test { public RelayCommand MyCommand { get; set; } public Test() { MyCommand = new RelayCommand((param) => SomeFunc(param)); } private void SomeFunc( object param) { } } I get the error: Delegate 'System.Action' does not take '1' arguments. Just to make sure I am not insane, I went to the definition of RelayCommand to make sure I didn't have some rogue implementation in my solution somewhere, but sure enough, it was just Action, and not Action<. What on earth am I missing here?

  In my web application VS 2008 solution, I have the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory and a whole set of language directories for it (ar, cs, de,es, fr, he, etc...) I don't remember how the language directories got in there. If I am using other languages via the ACT, do I need these directories? If not, then I don't? When I do a rebuild solution, the dll (AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll) in these directories disappear. If I need them, what do I need to do to keep them from being deleted during a rebuild?

• Google Web Toolkit Deferred Binding Issue

  I developed a web app using GWT about 2 years ago, since then the application has evolved. In its current state it relies on fetching a single XML file and parsing the information from it. Overall this works great. A requirement of this app is that it needs to be able to be ran from the filesystem (file:///..) as well as the traditional model of running from a webserver (http://...) Fetching this file from a webserver works exactly as expected using a RequestBuilder object. When running the app from the filesystem Firefox, Opera, Safari, and Chrome all behave as expected. When running the app from the filesystem using IE7 or IE8 the RequestBuilder.send() call fails, the information about the error suggests that there is a problem accessing the file due to violating the same origin policy. The app worked as expected in IE6 but not in IE7 or IE8. So I looked at the source code of RequestBuilder.java and saw that the actual request was being executed with an XMLHttpRequest GWT object. So I looked at the source code for XMLHttpRequest.java and found out some information. Here is the code (starts at line 83 in XMLHttpRequest.java) public static native XMLHttpRequest create() /*-{ if ($wnd.XMLHttpRequest) { return new XMLHttpRequest(); } else { try { return new ActiveXObject('MSXML2.XMLHTTP.3.0'); } catch (e) { return new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } } }-*/; So basically if an XMLHttpRequest cannot be created (like in IE6 because it is not available) an ActiveXObject is used instead. I read up a little bit more on the IE implementation of XMLHttpRequest, and it appears that it is only supported for interacting with files on a webserver. I found a setting in IE8 (Tools-Internet Options-Advanced-Security-Enable native XMLHTTP support), when I uncheck this box my app works. I assume this is because I am more of less telling IE to not use their implementation of XmlHttpRequest, so GWT just uses an ActiveXObject because it doesn't think the native XmlHttpRequest is available. This fixes the problem, but is hardly a long term solution. I can currently catch a failed send request and verify that it was trying to fetch the XML file from the filesystem using normal GWT. What I would like to do in this case is catch the IE7 and IE8 case and have them use a ActiveXObject instead of a native XmlHttpRequest object. There was a posting on the GWT google group that had a supposed solution for this problem (link). Looking at it I can tell that it was created for an older version of GWT. I am using the latest release and think that this is more or less what I would like to do (use GWT deferred binding to detect a specific browser type and run my own implementation of XMLHttpRequest.java in place of the built in GWT implementation). Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong? Should I not do this via deferred binding and just use native javascript when I catch the fail case instead? Is there a different way of approaching this problem that I have not mentioned? All replies are welcome.

  Hi, I have a 2D array, call it 'A'. I have two other 2D arrays, call them 'ix' and 'iy'. I would like to create an output array whose elements are the elements of A at the index pairs provided by x_idx and y_idx. I can do this with a loop as follows: for i=1:nx for j=1:ny output(i,j) = A(ix(i,j),iy(i,j)); end end How can I do this without the loop? If I do output = A(ix,iy), I get the value of A over the whole range of (ix)X(iy). Thank you, Jason
