• how to connect only ethernet and only wireless hosts together

  Here is my problem. I have an android tablet that have only WiFi for network connectivity and I have a windows server that have only Ethernet ports for network connection. Now I want to telnet to my server from my tablet. I think some wireless to Ethernet converter required in between. I am planning to use Buffalo Air Station WCR-GN or TP-LINK TL-WR740N or TL-WR702N. The connection setup should be like this: [server]<---Ethernet---[WIFI router]<---wireless---[Tablet]. Now I am in doubt will this setup work? Anybody please help me with this. Regards Ashok

• tomato firmware unstable when I am connected to Chromecast

  I have an Asus RT-N12D1, and I installed the tomato firmware by shibby ( version tomato-K26-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-112-Max.trx). However I found that the connection can be really unstable. Whenever I stream youtube videos on TV via Chromecast ( I tried both the cast from iPad and Win7, both can reproduce the problem), the router will frequently restart itself, leading to a loss of connection and subsequent reconnection. I want to get this problem fixed, but I don't know how. Is there anyway where I can troubleshoot what is the real problem, or is there anyway I can collect enough log information so that I can then present to the original developer for a fix ( maybe)?

  I have a Western Digital N900 router. I was hoping I'd be able to throttle users based on their MAC address with it, which isn't possible sadly. Seems simple in principle though, duh. The battle against bandwidth hogging roomates rages on. Could I just set the local IP range to their IP, and then set the Local port range to every single port in existence. Then prioritize their IP to lower than mine? Will this work? What are all the ports? And what's the difference between Local and Remote IPs or Ports? Name: Roomate, Priority: Low, Protocol: TCP or UDP ??, Local IP Range: .101 to .101, Local Port Range: 0 to infinity, Remote IP Range: ? to ?, Remote Port Range: ? to ?

• Anytime I upload something, my internet slows down extremely. What can I do?

  Title says it all. For a bit more info though: Basically, I have Time Warner cable internet. My speeds maintain a stable 2Mbit/s upload and 20Mbit/s download with average ping times around 30ms. This crazy thing happens though when I upload anything. I went to upload a 200M file to my server today through sftp and my internet completely choked up. I speed tested it during this upload and my ping time was around 800ms, download speeds of 0.2Mbit/s and Upload speeds of 0.3Mbit/s. Note, I wasn't downloading anything during this time either. It is just straight upload. What is it that causes this phenomenon? My router is OpenBSD. Is there anything I could set up to fix this problem(by queues or some such), or is this a problem with cable internet?

When I clicked on that and tried to clone my PC's MAC address, it said invalid MAC address. • Tomato QoS: Why is some traffic unclassified when there are classifications for it?

  Ok, I am trying to tweak my router to give priority to some traffic. My classifications seem to cover just about everything but I still see ~60 to ~80% of the traffic as unclassified: TCP 192.168.1.100 64137 192.168.1.1 80 Unclassified TCP 192.168.1.100 64175 192.168.1.1 80 Unclassified TCP 192.168.1.100 64144 192.168.1.1 443 Unclassified I assume that the 64### ports are just what my WAP uses to send packets inside my home network. But my classifications seems to cover any traffic for destination ports 80 and 443: (partial list) TCP Dst Port: 80,443 High WWW TCP/UDP Dst Port: 1024-65535 Lowest Bulk Traffic Why do I have so much unclassified traffic if I have a classification that should cover it?

• Two internet connections coming in, one Sonicwall Tz170 (enhanced os), and slow speed

  I work a lot from my home office and being in general a tad paranoid I have cable and DSL pipes coming into my house. I have used an Ebay bought Sonicwall Tz170 with the enhanced OS for a good while. I believe it does failover and has a feature for doing round robin on which connection is used. I get the impression from using it that I might not be getting the most out of this setup. Is it possible/likely that my router could be a cause of the slowdown? Are there more appropriate choices?

  Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

  How do you calculate the data flown between a computer and the gateway computer. I have a Linux router/gateway running IP Tables which routes internet traffic in a LAN. I have individual users with IP/MAC Address mapped who access Interet through the gateway computer. I would like to find out the traffic utilized by individual users. Is it possible for us to find out what kind of traffic was HTTP, SMTP, FTP etc. Is it also possible to pool the information on hourly basis, and get specific info so that I can store information in a database? • SNMP counter issues with cisco RV082

  Does anyone else poll this router with SNMP? We are using firmware version: 2.0.0.19-tz We are having problems with the traffic counters, some of them appear to be implemented as 16 bit counter instead of 32 bit counters. The reason this is causing problems is that they roll over (at 65,000) to 0 in less than our minute polling cycle, really skewing our metrics. The counter for the Lan (interface 2) seems to be functioning properly, however interfaces 3 and 4 (WAN and DMZ / WAN2) rollover at 65000. • Does IP helper forward subnet broadcasts?

  Hi, I have a device on a VLAN that uses UDP subnet broadcasts to advertise its presence to similar devices. This works fine on a single VLAN, but now I need to allow it to communicate with similar devices on a second VLAN. I thought of using the IP helper command in the router, but I am wondering if that only forwards global broadcasts (255.255.255.255)? My device sends out a subnet broadcast (e.g. 192.168.6.255) Will IP helper change the destination address to the target subnet (e.g. 192.168.7.255)? Eamon

• Can I run a web site from my home network without jeapordizing other computers on my LAN?

  I have a home LAN with 5 computers and a NAS, all connected to a Linksys router which is connected to my Cox cable modem. I'm interested in having one of my computers run an IIS-based web site and to have it be accessible to the internet with a static IP. However, I do not want o jeapordize the safety of the other computers on my home network! Is there anyway to do this safely, or as safe as possible? I may also like to run an FTP server from this computer. Finally, optionally I would like to allow remote access to this computer from the internet--but it seems to me that that may increase the security risk to the other computers substantially.

• Wireless is not currently enabled

  I have a HP Pavilion TX2000 tablet PC with me with windows 7 OS running on it. I used to access the Internet using my D-Link DIR 615 wireless adapter on the tablet and it used to work quite fine until one day, when I hibernated my Windows 7, the wireless went off and the problem seems to persist even after my hard efforts to clear it. I checked if the router works fine, and yes it did as my iPod was still catching wireless signals on the other hand, when I checked mu device manager, I realized that I now had no wireless driver. I checked on HP's website for one, but ironically even they didn't have wireless drivers meant for my tablet for Windows 7. Please help me find a solution to this problem.   I have two routers at my house. Both of them have DCHP server enabled. One of them is 192.168.1.1 and gives adresses from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.32 The other one is 192.168.1.50 and gives adresses from 192.168.1.51 to 192.168.1.99 The problem is that I only have internet access in one because my ip is 192.168.1.7, and when I switch to the other one, the ip remains 192.168.1.7, even though I have automatically get a ip adress in Ipv4. When I manually change my ip to one in the range allowed by the router, I can browse the internet. Any ideas how to solve this? Thank you.

• Multicast accross the subnets

  My application sends some UDP packets on a multicast address. In our office we have 3 subnets connected via routers. Sitting in my subnet I'm able to ping the IP of the other subnet. Will multicast packets cross my subnet and reach the machines of other subnets? Or router will need some configuration? Or do I have to program a bridge for it? Please note that I do not know anything about Networking. Kindly tell me something that I can ask my network admin to do.

• Encrypt LAN and wifi traffic on small private network

  I need some advice about encrypt all traffic on a small private network running wi-fi and LAN traffic on 192.168.0.x network. The network would comprise of client laptops connecting to the wi-fi router (192.168.0.254) via ethernet connection or wireless. The main purpose of the server is for the client laptops to talk to two servers on different IP's (192.168.0.200 and 192.168.0.201) on ports 80 and 433. My main concern is having packet sniffers and what not getting access to the data. The only ways I see at the moment is to have VPN running on the network or use IPSec policy's to do this. Any other ways guys?

• Planning home network

  I'm planning to setup my home network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My home is connected to Internet with a cable connection (100 Mb/s). The devices I would like to connect are VoIP phone (RJ-45), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), 2 smartphones (WiFi), an iPad (WiFi), a Kindle (WiFi), a network printer and, probably, a home media storage (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, I need help to choose the best router (or combination of routers) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. I like how Cisco/Linksys devices were working for me in the past, so preferably (but not obligatorily) I want to setup network with their solutions. Any thoughts?

• My server is behind a router. How can I see my website correctly? [closed]

  I'm running a web server (Ubuntu) on my local home network. I'm behind a router. On the WAN I have a direct IP. When not on my home network and accessing my website via the WAN direct IP my website displays correctly and everything works. On my home LAN behind the router, accessing my website via the WAN direct gets me to my router's admin login page. This is normal. But... Accessing my website (via it's home LAN IP address) from another computer on my home LAN gets me to the website but the layout display is broken and clicking on any link takes me to the WAN direct IP (my router's Admin login page). How can i get my website to display properly and the links to work when accessing it from my home LAN?

• Deprioritize BitTorrent traffic

  I'm sure the question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find it for myself; my Google-fu eludes me. My router, the Linksys E2000, does a decent job at being reasonable about prioritizing some sorts of traffic above BitTorrent traffic (there isn't too much interruption to port 80, 443, or 22 traffic, the ones I use most often). But other ports get pummeled. For instance, 3000 (which I use for local Rails testing) becomes almost entirely non-functioning. Xbox Live traffic (not sure about the ports, but they are in the 1000 range) doesn't do well either. So I'm wondering how to ensure that XBL and local Rails testing maintain strong service while BitTorrent is going. Is it enough that I turn up the QoS on their associated ports to high? It doesn't seem to be as effective as when BitTorrent isn't running at all (I don't know if there's a way to deprioritize BitTorrent traffic).

• iPhone always assigned wrong ip

  for some reason most of the time my iPhone connects to the home network the ip address seems wrongly assigned as it 'loses connection' even even with strong reception. If I change the ip address to a static from 168.2.10 to 168.2.15 works fine until it appears to renew back to the prior. I am using a power-plug extender from the modem to router. Then have a laptop Printer playstation tv and another iPhone that always connect fine. The modem also has a crappy wireless which I haven't connected any devices to. I'm sure the forum will have a simple answer!

• Why do Cisco IOS routers hang in the middle of large downloads?

  After a few years in use. We have seen Cisco 871 and 851 routers that would hang if you had a single download that was more than 100M large. It is intermittent. Sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes it happens on very small downloads (just a 10KB web page). It seems that the just about all the downloads eventually finish, but the bigger the download the longer the hang. Is there a way to resolve this? (short of router replacement which is what we have been doing)

  What are some solutions to access Windows by its computer name from Linux and Mac using TCP/IP. That is, from terminal I want to be able to ping my Windows PCs using its host name. My setup is: Various machines running Ubuntu, Windows XP and OS X. Networked using a consumer grade wireless router which provides DHCP. The only DNS is the ISP's, which resolves Internet names and not local host names. The Windows machines can ping each other by name. The Ubuntu and OS X machines can only ping Windows by IP address (name doesn't work).

• Can dd-wrt or tomato keep track of GB usage per billing period per device?

  I want to be able to track the usage of each device connecting to our router so we can split up the ISP bill by usage. Can dd-wrt or tomato provide the stats I'd need to do this? Update: After a bit of googling I'm aware of a much better answer than the current one. However I suspect there's probably more answers out there for other firmwares so in the interests of getting a more diverse set of answers—­and, I'll admit, because I'm getting tired of reading through obtuse firmware documentation—I've put up a bounty. If the only answer added is the one I've found I'll be happy to accept it for the bounty, otherwise I'll add it and accept it myself, but I'm hoping for an even better answer, or at least some options for other firmwares as from looking I've seen a few other people have asked for this and there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer, let's make this it! • Cannot open any web page, but MSN Messenger works

  I use my computer behind a router. My MSN program can connect to the Internet, but I can not open any web site with my web browser. It seems that this problem is related to DNS because when I input an IP address directly in the address bar of my web browser, the web page can be displayed. However, I don't know how to fix this problem. I choose Google Public DNS server on my computer, this problem still exists. My OS is windows XP. How to fix this problem? Any ideas?

• Orange Brightbox and NO-IP.com

  Strange one here i didnt know where to ask, and i know this is a developer resource but i was hoping with everyones tech know how someone may have a solution for my problem. Ok i had an orange livebox before and in the dynamic dns settings it had no-ip.com as a drop down option with login variables to update my account with a dynamic ip address. This worked great for years. However my livebox died and i now have a orange brightbox, and this doesnt have no-ip.com as a login update option for dynamic dns on my router. Does any one have any idea how i can get my domain to point to my home server with a dynamic ip address ideally for free? This is merely for testing and to have a backup server for my main remote server.
