  • Network/browser issues after upgrade to 12.04

    I let my laptop upgrade to 12.04. And have no network afterwards. I went through all the articles I could find in google. Right now, I can ping google, and yahoo, but not cnn.com for example or anything else. Firefox says it can't reach google.com or gmail.com (or anything, not even IP. /etc/network/interfaces dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 <<<<<added auto lo iface lo inet loopback /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf #prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4; prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; <<<<< tried both /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf with and without dns=dnsmasq commented out. I can ping my wireless router and connect to it just fine. Have tried proxy/noproxy. This looks like After Upgrade to 12.04 - cannot connect to network but no answer there. I would hate to do a fresh install. Any assistance appreciated.

    I have a test suite which runs in a browser (using QUnit, though that's unimportant). The test suite requires a local server running on a particular port. Running the tests currently involves a few steps: node test/server switch to browser of choice open localhost:3000 I'd like to have a single command which starts the server then runs open localhost:3000. Ideally, the node process would remain in the foreground so it could be killed with ^C. I don't have a good understanding of subshells, so I'm not sure whether this is possible.

  • The move from IE6/XP to IE8/Win7 and its effect on ASP.NET applications

    Hello, The company I work for is preparing for application testing in IE8. Previously we have been using IE6. Many of our web applications are written in .NET 1.0 and 1.1 with more recent apps written in 2.x and 3.x. I know IE8 has an IE7 compatibility mode and it says it has a quirks mode, but most of our apps were written for 6, which is not specifically mentioned. Compatibility is for 7, which had a compatibility for 6. I do not know if that is necessarily carried over to 8. In 6 quirks mode was to run 5.5 sites without a problem. With no deeper explanation on any of Microsoft's release notes does it mention quirks mode as 6 compliant or even 5.5, just a basis of what it is (specific DOCTYPEs or no DOCTYPEs). If anyone could shed some light on how sites and apps designed for IE6 should run in IE8 would be greatly appreciated. If anyone else has made a similar move how smooth was the transition? Thanks.

  • Can a website see/know my MAC address even if I use a VPN?

    I have searched other results and read many of them but I could not get an enough information. My question is that can a website see my MAC address or can they have an information about that I'm the same person under these conditions: I am using a VPN and I use two IPs: first one is normal one, the second one is the VPN's IP. I use two browsers to hide behind browser fingerprinting. I use both browsers with Incognito Mode. I always use one for normal IP, one for the VPN IP. I do not know that if the website uses cookies or not. But can they collect an enough information to prove that these two identities belong to same person? Is there any other way for them to see that I am the same person? I use different IPs, different browsers and I use both browsers in incognito mode. I even changed one of browsers language to only English. So even if they collect my info from browser, they will see two browsers using different languages. (Addition after edit): So I have changed my IP and browser information and the website can not reach this information anymore to prove that I am the same person using two accounts. Then let's come to the title: Can they see my MAC address? Because I think that it is the last way that they can identify me and my main question is that. I wrote the information above to mention that I changed IPs and I have some precautions to avoid browser fingerprinting (btw my VPN provider already has a service about blocking it). I wrote them because I read similar advices in some related questions but my question is that can they see my MAC address (or anything else that can make me detected) despite all these precautions. And lastly, Is there an extra way to be anonymized that I can do? For example, can my system clock or anything else give an information? Thanks in advance.

  • can I override/redefine "global" Javascript functions, like confirm() and alert()?

    I want to do some browser automation, and those pesky confirm/alert boxes are a real pain. Disabling javascript completely in this case is not an option, unfortunately. Well, so I was wondering, can I just change the definition of those methods as seen by my browser's javascript interpreter to basically do nothing and return true? Note that I do know about redefining them in the Javascript code directly, e.g. putting in function alert(message) { return true; } but AFAIK this is not a viable approach for this situation because when doing browser automation I have to work with other people's Javascript. Moreover, my program actually begins manipulating these websites already after the page has fully loaded into the browser, so I cannot just first automatically rewrite the javascript and then load the page. Well, so I was wondering if I could instead just "permanently" modify the way alert/confirm are implemented and executed in my browser. Sort of like the equivalent of dll injection and so forth in the realm of windows apps.

  • Non-functioning AutoFilter on Locked Cells in Office 2008 - works in Office 2007

    I'm looking into a problem for someone, who works in a mixed OS environment. She has created an Excel spreadsheet in Office 2007 to act as a directory, with AutoFilter turned on for names, email addresses, departments etc. To make sure no one accidentally edits email addresses (for example), she has protected the work sheet. Accessing this worksheet on a PC running Excel 2007, everything runs as you'd expect. You can filter the sheet by any of the auto-filtered columns, and because the sheet is protected, the data integrity is guaranteed. However, if you access the sheet on a Mac running Excel 2008, you can't filter the columns. What's strange here is that the AutoFilter dropdown arrows do appear in each of the column headers as you would expect. It's just that nothing happens if you click on them. If you select one of the column header cells (say, 'First Name') and check the menu: Data-Filter, you can see that AutoFilter is ticked. As another datapoint, you also seem to be able to apply an Advanced filter to these rows on the protected sheets. Does anyone know why this might be? It seems to be a compatibility issue between Excel 2007/2008 (I know the codebase isn't the same), but I can't find any references to it in documentation or forums anywhere, and it would be good to know if there's a way around this.     I have a really old installer (legacy app) that we are trying to get running on a Windows 7 64 bit os. Previously it has only been installed on Windows XP 32 bit. I get the following error when I try to run it: The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. Contacting the software publisher is not an option (software is super old). Is there a way to get this to work? Some sort of compatibility mode? The only thing I have heard of that will work is a Virtual XP on the Win 7 box. The problem is that this software is a part of a whole software set. I would have to put all of the pieces on the Virtual XP or none at all. Before I go down the road of putting it all on the virtual xp I would like to know that there is no way to get it all on the Win 7 os.

    Basically, I'm trying to find out which of the following files come packaged with the Windows 8 RTM (that is, the final version). Just to be clear, we're not wanting to know if any of the runtime files (listed below) are or were included with any of the previous versions (Beta, CTP, RS etc) or releases of Windows 8 - we are just interested in this compatibility question as far as Windows 8 RTM (Final Version) is concerned. In addition, if possible, we would also like to know which of the below files (if any) come shipped and registered with the Windows 8 RT (on ARM) version. As far as the ARM version is concerned, you're welcome to base your answer on the latest version of Windows 8 RT (on ARM) that is available at the date and time your answer is posted. (This will also serve to future-proof this question as additional releases or versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT on ARM come out). The specifications on the eCommerce site for the NAS says, "Controller Interface Type Serial ATA-150", the product home page for the manufacturer says, "Compatible with SATA and SATA II HDD". The specifications on the eCommerce site for the hard drives say, "Interface Type Serial ATA-300", the product home page for the manufacturer says, "Interface SATA 3.0 Gbps" Wikipedia says many things about different naming conventions, the closest being, "SATA II 3.0 Gbit/s, which was colloquially referred to as "SATA 3G" [bps] or "SATA 300" [MB/s] since 1.5 Gbit/s SATA I and 1.5 Gbit/s SATA II were referred to as both "SATA 1.5G" [b/s] or "SATA 150" [MB/s]). Therefore, they will operate with negligible differences between them." Are SATA II and SATA 3.0 Gbps the same?   • UACCEEventLog 301 Filling Event Logs

    After pushing out clients for the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit on our domain via GPO, UACCEEventLog 301 occurs a few times per second in the event log. Several Thousand per hour. One test i need to do is logon with Administrator to see if these events go away while Admin, but of course that is not a fix. This is only part of the event log entry, but is the most readable and clearly indicates yet another problem with Antivirus software. But still no fix. Originally, i posted this In Words and Bytes, but then edited it to make it much easier to read. LocalMachine\Users do have Read Access to this key.   • A web app provider has asked for specific browser config

    They have asks to turn off caching on our browsers. I was aghast that they would ask such a thing. I said to them; To avoid caching it is best practice to use; <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> This should work across all browsers. Their reply was; We need to refresh javascript at runtime, this will not help us – any more ideas? I replied; Unsure what you mean by “refresh javascript at runtime”. If you are using ajax, browser caching can effect the XMLHttpRequest open method. Adding these meta tags to the source has fixed this for me in the past. Browser caching only caches resources, it should have no effect on site scripting. These meta tags will bypass browser caching. This is a reasonable request, isn't it?

  • Desktop appliciations are unable to launch my browser in Windows 8 [migrated]

    I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications.

  • Java in a browser on Ubuntu

    So I am running an old version of Ubuntu and all of a sudden, my capabilities to run Java in a browser have stopped and it no longer executes properly. Someone else set this up for me, but I believe it's running icedtea plugin 6 and jre 6. What would be the best ways to troubleshoot this? I suppose I could try downloading icedtea 7 and jre 7 (sun or openjdK) and see if that works? Also, in general, is installing icedtea, installing a java runtime environment, and then symlinking something to the plugins directory of your browser the best way to get Java working on most Linux systems? Unfortunately, there are many guides all over the internet offering totally different solutions, but this is probably the most common I've seen (not sure how well it works). My main use is downloading an executing .jnlp files (browsers should open it automatically). Although, I've seen people using "javasw" to run the file outside of a browser. Is this something I could consider doing? I can't seem to find javasw packaged for my version of Ubuntu.

  • Google chrome asking for username and password for OWA

    Hi, i have a question about the google chrome browser. When i navigate to my work's Outlook Web Access site to read my emails, the chrome browser is prompting me for a username and password to the server saying "Authentication Required - the server XXXXXX.XXX:443 requires a username and password. After i put them in i then have to enter in the normal OWA username and password to access my emails as per normal. The funny thing is.. 1] If i click CANCEL on the first dialog it takes me to the OWA screen and i can log in normal anyway. However - subqeuent page clicks will keep prompting me each time for the server credentials. 2] I am NOT prompted for server UN and PW if i use IE or fireFox. Does anyone know how to stop chrome from asking me each time? or is it a server setting - i do know that a friend who uses the same browser (chrome) and also OWA does not have the same problem (NB: they work at a different company) Thanks!
