  • Change libcups to repository version

    I upgraded my libcups package to 1.6 in hopes to fix something but I just buggered things up more. So I want to reinstall it to the version on the repository (1.5.3 I think). I've tried to do a reinstall using ~#: apt-get install --reinstall libcups2 but that tells me it cannot be downloaded so refuses to upgrade. I can't just do: ~#: apt-get remove libcups2 ~#: apt-get install libcups2 as that wants to remove 299 packages along with it. Totaling 668MB so I am hesitant as that will probably take 6 hours to download on my connection.

    I was finally able to connect to avasys.jp and downloaded and installed iscan_2.28.1-3.ltdl7_amd64.deb iscan-data_1.13.0-1_all.deb. The programs appeared to install correctly. I then ran sane-find-scanner and got back: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x012d) at libusb:001:003 I then ran lsusb and got back: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04b8:012d Seiko Epson Corp. Optical Mouse the avasys image scan manual instructed me to run chmod 0666 /proc/bus/usb/001/003 which returned chmod: cannot access `/proc/bus/usb/001/003': No such file or directory In 12.04, no such directory exists. 12.04 appears to deal with USB in another way. What must I do to get the usb port 001/003 recognized by xsane and sane as the port where the scanner can be located? What must I do to continue installing the scanner?

    Hi, Assume a java string that contains an IP (v4 or v6) or a hostname. What is the best way to detect among these cases? I am not interested so much on whether the IP is in valid range (e.g. 999.999.999.999 for IPv4). I am interested in just a way to detect if a String is a hostname or an IP (v4 or v6). Initially I though this: if(theString.indexOf("@")!=-1){ //Not an Ip } but I am not sure if I should always expect a format containing @ always. Thanks

    One approach to check if a given integer is negative or not, could be this: (using bit operations) int num_bits = sizeof(int) * 8; //assuming 8 bits per byte! int sign_bit = given_int & (1 << (num_bits-1)); //sign_bit is either 1 or 0 if ( sign_bit ) { cout << "given integer is negative"<<endl; } else { cout << "given integer is positive"<<endl; } The problem with this solution is that number of bits per byte couldn't be 8, it could be 9,10, 11 even 16 or 40 bits per byte. Byte doesn't necessarily mean 8 bits! Anyway, this problem can be easily fixed by writing, //CHAR_BIT is defined in limits.h int num_bits = sizeof(int) * CHAR_BIT; //no assumption. It seems fine now. But is it really? Is this Standard conformant? What if the negative integer is not represented as 2's complement? What if it's representation in a binary numeration system that doesn't necessitate only negative integers to have 1 in it's most significant bit?   • Programmaticaly change lightdm autologin session type

    I have problem with lightdm setting autologin session type (using my config tool). Lightdm logs into previously selected session. I see that autologin-session is UNIMPLEMENTED in version 1.2.1. Maybe I can somehow cheat lightdm? but it seems program writes actual state when stopping and overwrites my changes to /home/user/.dmrc and /var/cache/lightdm/user.dmrc. At the current I have two sessions: default and kiosk. in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf I have line: user-session=desktop but after I logged into kiosk session it starts all the time. Changing .dmrc and /var/cache/lightdm/dmrc/user.dmrc doesn't work.

  • How to change the IP address on my Ubuntu virtual NIC

    I have a physical windows system, on which I run Vmware Workstation. Now on VMware I run Ubuntu 12.10. I am running a webserver on Ubuntu via LAMP, inside VMware. Problem: Now my local IP address for my virtual NIC (the one Ubuntu is using) has an address of 192.168.159.7, and my home router only issues IP addresses of the range 10.0.0.x. So if I want to port forward to the virtual NIC, which has a 192.168 address, I cannot, so my LAMP webserver cannot be accessed externally since the router does not know to send the packets on port 80 to the virtual NIC... How do I fix that? The only way I guess is to assign a 10.0.0.x ip address to the virtual NIC?? But how do I do that? I tried to do it on the host Windows machine with 'Get my IP address automatically' but it issues a 192.168 address every time... Thank you

  • C# IE Proxy Detection not working from a Windows Service

    This is very odd. I've written a windows form tool in C# to return the default IE proxy. It works (See code snippets below). I've created a service to return the proxy using the same code, it works when I step into the debugger, BUT it doesn't work when the service is running as binary code. This must be some sort of permissions or context thing that I cannot recreate. Further, if I call the tool from the windows service, it still doesn't return the proxy information.... this seems isolated to the service somehow. I don't see any permission errors in the events log, it's as if a service has a totally different context than a regular windows form exe. I've tride both: WebRequest.GetSystemWebProxy() and Uri requestUri = new Uri(urlOfDomain); HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(requestUri); IWebProxy proxy = request.Proxy; if (!proxy.IsBypassed(requestUri)){ Uri uri2 = proxy.GetProxy(request.RequestUri); } Thanks for any help!

  • How to change partitioning - may involve conversion of a partition from primary to extended

    I am having trouble thinking through how I can achieve my partitioning goals. Now my partitions are: sda1 (winA) (primary) sda2 (winB) (primary) sda3 (/ for ubuntu) (primary) What I want to migrate into is (obviously partition numbers need not be exactly like that) sda1 (winA) (primary) sda2 (winB) (primary) sda3 (/boot) (primary) sda4 - extended which will contain sda5 (/home) sda6 (/ for ubuntu) sda7 (swap) I know I may be asking too much, but what would a way to do it? One way I have thought is Create a new primary partition for /boot and split it from the root partition into the new one. It shouldn't be too hard. Then the disk will have 4 primary partitions. Somehow convert the root ubuntu partition from primary to extended. Split that last partition in 3 extended partitions (root, /home, swap) and split the contents there. I am obviously stuck on the 2nd part. Another way could be (maybe easier): Create an extended partition (or two) Split /home there Somehow move everything except /boot to the extended partition. This way /boot will stay on the primary partition that exists now, and will be shrunk as needed, and everything else will end up to the extended partitions. This may sound better, but I'm not too sure how to do the 3rd part. Some details: The disk is almost empty, so I have space to move things around in it, shrink the ubuntu partition etc. I don't want to touch the windows partitions in any way. Reinstallation is not an option. Also using a different partitioning scheme with fewer partitions is not an option (for example not having a separate /boot) Any ideas?

    my problem is my courser is blinking for any windows that refresh. for example right now each litter i write the courser blink for it , well it's acceptable now but imagine what happen when i open facebook (each picture , each simple element in the web page the courser blink for it) , please help me i really want to move to Ubuntu but problems keep get in my way and push me back to windows PC status : Core i5 , 4G ram , Nvidia optimus 310m , 500G HDD.   • How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

    The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

  • Connection Timeout Extension/Detection

    Well, let me start off by explaining what I'm trying to do. I have an application that stalls a HTTP connection until new data is available (sometimes a few seconds, sometimes 30 minutes or so). Right now, the system works fine if the data is sent within a few minutes. The problem I'm facing, is that it doesn't seem that XHR recognizes a dropped connection... So instead of killing the current connection and reconnecting when it detects a dropped connection, it just sits there. I'd really not like to have it force-reconnect every minute or two (That's one reason this app was written, to stop the need for polling). So, my questions are as follows: Is there a way to detect a dropped (not closed) TCP connection with XHR? Is there a way that I can tell XHR not to timeout (I saw IE8 has the .timeout property) Would it be better to send a header (or some other content) every now and then (say once per minute) down the pipe to keep the connection open?     I wanted to try out different desktop environments so I installed XFCE, KDE, GNOME, etc on top of Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 After a while I decided that I didn't like those other DEs and would stick to Unity. So I changed my default DE to Unity by configuring gdm. > sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Now I am able to choose my DE at login time and all of DEs are working properly. But the strange thing is that my boot up screen says 'lubuntu', my login screen is KDE, and my desktop is Unity. How and why is this happening? Why didn't my gdm configuration have any effect? Does login and boot up screen need to be configured separately from the DE? There are other similar questions here but they are not the same as this one. I do not want to remove the other enviroments I'm quite happy with having a list of DEs to select from. I want to know how to set proper defaults.

  • Kubuntu 12.04: Change login screen background?

    I am having trouble changing my login screen background. I can select the default wall paper, the Kde-default one, but when ever I select my own custom wallpaper, there is no image, just a solid color. Normally, I would just ignore it, but the thing that bugs me is that this is a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 64bit, and the OS before this one, the one I overwrote, I had no trouble using the exact same image as the background... Settings In the System Settings application, Login Screen settings, Background tab, enable background, Under "Background", selected Picture, under options, selected Position: Scaled. Colors: Single Color. Blending: No Blending.

    As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able!   • Can't change color of sprites in unity

    I would like to create a script that targets a 2d sprite "enemy" and changes their color to red (slightly opaque red if possible) when you hit tab. I have this code from a 3d tutorial hoping the transition would work. But it does not. I only get the script to cycle the enemy tags but never changes the color of the sprite. I have the code below I'm very new to coding, and any help would be FANTASTIC! HELP! hahah. TL;DR Cant get 3d color targeting to work for 2D.   • MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

    I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.
