  The English majors over at Dell provided me with this error message provided by a PowerEdge 2950. CPU2 Status: Processor sensors for CPU2, IERR was deasserted I've Googled it, random forum posts aren't providing me with a clear answer. It's also apparently not a word: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deassert?s=t I can guess the meaning. Assert: to state with assurance, confidence, or force Okay. So the negative of that. The state of lack-of-confidence? What is this error message trying to tell me? Memory errors were grouped with this one: is it trying to say that IERR for CPU2 should be set, but is not? That the current system state is SNAFU but CPU2 sees everything as fine?

  I am having hp 540 notebook with processor core 2 duo. I have installed CLC,CC,SC and Walrus runs fine when I try to run NC, I get error "Not virtualization enabled" means my laptop does not support virtualization. I got it. Then, In my college, there is Dell desktop PC having processor Core 2 Duo. But it has virtualization enbled.So I get confused. How same thing has different effects.   I bought an Asus Lion Square compatible with a AMD Athlon II X3 435 Socket AM3 processor? I know strictly speaking, the Lion Square specifies AM2 but I'm a little confused since AM2 and AM3 are suppose to be socket compatible (I'm a little confused here as well but I assume it means an AM3 board will support AM2/AM2+ CPUs). However, will there be a problem with chip height and spacing? Or do people have experience asking ASUS for a standoff adapter?

• Max. Temp. on Intel Burn Test for Stock Dell Precision T3500

  I'm troubleshooting an issue on a Dell Precision T3500. As part of my troubleshooting I've decided to try running a stress test using Intel Burn Test software. This machine is a stock configuration with 12GB of RAM and a Xeon W3670 processor (nothing overclocked). When I run IBT using the standard mode, SpeedFan reports a processor temperature in excess of 80C. I've seen numbers as high as 90C but even at that temperature the machine does not become unstable or crash. However, it seems way too high. This processor has a TCase of 67.9C according to Intel's website. I'm guessing that means I'm in the danger zone any time I go over that temperature. I've checked the cooling system and everything looks fine. I've even took out the heat sink and reinstalled it with new thermal compound. This did not appear to make the problem better or worse. Is there a discrepancy somewhere here in the way temperatures are measured or displayed? I've also tried using HWMonitor from CPUID and it reports the same temperatures. Should I just let the Standard Test go and disregard the temperature outputs?

• why is 64 bits version called AMD64 and 32 bits version called i386?

  I have never understood this. This is what i know: 64 bits OS if you want to handle more than 2GB RAM. Else, 32 bits OS. So on Ubuntu's homepage you can download either 64 bits or 32 bits. But the 64 bits is called amd64 and the 32 bits is called i386. So i have to have a AMD processor to run amd64? And intel to run i386? And if someone codes a software (lets say Apache). Does he have to code one 32 bits and one 64 bits? Do some softwares only exist for 32 and not 64 and vice versa? Thanks in advance!

  We are trying to deploy mongrel instances on a machine. What is the optimal number of mongrel instances for a server? Since an instance can handle concurrent connections, I do not see any benefit in starting more than 1 per core. Any more than that and the threads will just fight for CPU. Our predecessors have assigned 10 instances for 4 cores, but I think it will just cause CPU contention. Any definitive answers / opinions? I have seen this question: How many mongrel instances? But it is really not specific enough.

• Why does my laptop shut down, does it get too hot?

  When I play games, or use powerful-applications such as Autodesk Maya, my laptop just shuts down, ofcourse without any warning at all. This is what I've tried so far: Cleaned my fan, completely! Checked if I have enough RAM and good enough graphics card, and I do. (6 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT540M with 2 GB VRAM) None of these options worked. Even tried to clean my fan twice! Now, I have some options I could also try, but I don't know if that have anything to do with it or not. I was thinking reinstalling my Windows 7, because maybe it has to do something wrong with the installation? My laptop is about a year old, and this problem just happend out of no where, short after I downgraded from Windows 8 Release Preview to my original Windows 7.

  I have no OS installed, and I am trying to use a linux boot disc. However it is not a linux problem....if I just leave the computer on at the no operating system found message, it still turns off. I thought maybe it was overheating, but I am 90% sure that is not the problem. What else could cause this? I should have mentioned, it's a laptop.

• Processor upgrade on a laptop vs. Ram upgrade. Also does ram always matter?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 14r (N4110) with an Intel Core i3 and 4gb of ram. It runs very smoothly, however gaming on this laptop is very limited. This is mostly because of integrated graphics but i have seen a computer with a Core i5, and very similar specs otherwise, run games that the N4110 cannot. This other computer has integrated graphics and 6gb of ram. I am wondering whether upgrading ram or upgrading the processor make the most difference in performance. Which setup would get better performance, an i5 with 4gb of ram or an i3 with 8 gb of ram? (Both with integrated graphics) Also, is there a certain point at which you have too much ram for the computer to ever possibly use? For instance is there really any difference in performance between 8 gb and 16 gb of ram?

• Core 2 Duo Processor E8400 with LGA 755 socket?

  The motherboard on my PC (Dell XPS 410) has socket LGA 755 and according to the box on this processor I have, says it requires a motherboard with socket LGA 775. Will this processor work on the 755 motherboard? Edit: After reading further result online, I think I may have been fed some mis-information. According to this thread the XPS comes with socket LGA 755 but on other sites it says that it comes with LGA 775...

  I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • why are CPUs so much more expensive in the UK than US?

  I'm looking at building my own PC. An Intel Core i7 960 3.2 Ghz is about £457 in the UK at various online retailers. In the US the price at newegg is $570 (this is about £380 at current exchange rates). 2 questions. 1) Why the difference (about 20%)? All I can think of is sales tax. 2) Am I right in assuming this is just a commodity part - if I ordered one from the US there is no reason it would be any different from one bought in the UK?

  I recently got a brand new computer. Everything was fine until I plugged my electric guitar into my amp. When I switch on my guitar amp (guitar speaker) I can hear a weird noise. It sounds like the noise that that goes through your speakers when you put your mobile phone next to it. There is nothing wrong with my guitar or guitar amp and I didn't have any similar problems with my old computer. Can anyone help me?

  We have a HP Pavilion DV3 4000SB that was given an error on startup that the fan was having problems (System Fan 90b error message) So I decided to open the laptop up and clean the fan, as that seemed the easiest option. Upon opening it up, at first I froze and thought "No wonder! The whole thing's burnt!", but then I started thinking it looked more like someone used a spraycan on it. I looked up a video on youtube of someone disassembling his Pavilion and noticed there wasn't any of the black on his, so my question here is: Have any of you encountered this, or know what it is? Or if it's something that could point to a problem?

• If I double my ram on a x86 processor, does that double the ram I can use for each individual process?

  I don't understand how 32-Bit OS's use RAM on a per process basis. I've read the max RAM my x86 processor running a 32-bit OS can use is 2^32 = 4gb; but that's just for one process, right? 3DS Max keeps crashing, but it typically can never use more than 2GB of RAM before it crashes, if I increase my RAM from 4-8GB, would that double how much RAM I can use for each individual process or actually cause no change in my performance? Also would increasing my VRAM and getting a better graphics card increase the extent to which individual programs can preform? Lastly, is there any way to upgrade a 86-bit processor to be able to run a 64-bit OS? I feel like it would be ridiculous to sell modern processors that are capped at 4GB of RAM? Thanks.   I'm planning to build my own computer. I do not have enough cash to buy all components I need in one go. I want to ask, if I buy motherboard which is compatible with i7 processor (any) and compatible with graphic card Nvidia gtx 780, does it mean that this mother board will be compatible with processors (from intel) which will be released next year? Same for graphic cards? The point is that I'd like to avoid situation where I buy motherboard let's say now, and in couple of months there will be new graphic card/processor which will not be compatible with my mother board? I just got an offer from a dedicated hosting company, offering me a box with "2 Core 2 Quad processors @ 6GHz" I didn't know we could get 6GHz, and some googling turned out a bunch of people getting that, after overclocking like crazy, which seems to confirm my suspicion. • Windows XP x64 virtual machine (VMWare ESX) using only 2 CPUs (out of 4)

  I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter. Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage. What can I do?
