  • Is there a way to suppress keyboard sounds picked up by a desktop microphone in Windows 7?

    The problem I'd like to solve is that my desktop microphone picks up all my keystrokes very loudly compared with my voice. Even just lightly tapping a key without depressing it causes a loud click to be picked up. I'd like a way to filter out this type of sound, while picking up voice normally. Is there any software input equalizer/filter that could do this? Or alternatively, some sort of hardware hack?

  • IIS cannot access itself

    We are on a corporate network that uses ISA and I am having issues trying to not have requests go through ISA. I have IIS7 on my local Windows 7 machine that has websites and a service layer. The websites access the service layer using a xxxx.servicelayer.local address that is set up in my HOSTS file to point to 127.0.0.1. I have Windows Firewall client which I have disabled. I have tried both adding this address into IE so that it does not go through ISA and also disabled this section altogether. When the website (which is actually IIS making the request to itself) tries to access the service layer I receive an ISA error that proxy authentication has failed. Considering that everything I can see to configure is set to not go through the proxy, ISA, I cannot see how this is actually going through the proxy and giving this error. Is there something within Windows 7 that forces the proxy setting, some sort of caching or similar?

  • Virsh: Different XML with edit than dumpxml. Why?

    I'm trying to fetch the VNC access data from a virtual machine managed by libVirt. However, when I run virsh dumpxml $machine, the vnc passwd is missing: <graphics type='vnc' port='-1' autoport='yes'/> Checking the same using virsh edit $machine, I see the password is actually there: <graphics type='vnc' port='-1' autoport='yes' passwd='asdf'/> Why is this? Is this intentional (what reason?), or could this be a bug?

  • Windows 2000 under Windows 7 Virtual PC not working correctly

    I have just moved my Windows 2000 Virtual PCs from Vista to Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). The machines work to a point but I have found some problems: drive mapping does not seem to work any more. I need this to exchange data. I do not need network access to the virtual PC so would rather leave it unconnected. the virtual PC would automatically shutdown the session and go to the login screen after a few minutes of inactivity. I tried installing the Virtual PC Integration Components but the install failed (one of the messages basically says it's XP+ only). Now I'm stuck in 640x480 mode with mouse capture. I have heard that you can install an older version of the Integration Components but this sounds a bit suspect. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get Windows2000 working with drive sharing on a Virtual PC?

  • How do I convert an animated GIF to a YouTube friendly video format?

    My son has made some animations with Pivot Stickfigure Animator which we'd like to upload to YouTube. The problem is Pivot saves as animated GIFs which I can't upload to YouTube. The Wikipedia article recommends using Windows Movie Maker to convert GIF to WMV, but unfortunately I'm using Windows 7 for which you can get the new Windows Live Movie Maker which doesn't seem to support GIFs. I Googled and found an article which said to use Beneton Movie GIF to convert animated GIF to AVI, but this seemed to rely on a 3rd Party application which wasn't installed and so failed. Installing the missing application - pjBmp2Avi - by hand and adding it to the path still didn't allow Beneton to do the conversion. I hoped FFmpeg might do the trick but this only outputs to animated GIFs, it won't read from then. Further Googling found lots of applications with 30 day trials and so on but I was hoping for something free. So any suggestions on how I can convert an animated GIF to a movie file on Windows using free (as in beer) software?

  • Junior admin - how to discover/map the network to increase understanding?

    I am a junior admin and have been tasked with gaining an understanding of the network. The 2nd line team are somewhat condescending so I'd rather not ask them. I know and use some of the servers on the network, so am able to tracert/ping them to see the names/addresses of equipment there are along the way, and gradually build a map, but how do I put the feelers out to find out what's out there if I don't know the names of server etc?

  • Windows Vista - Can't start any program without choosing "Run as administrator"

    A friend called me saying that her computer recently said it was applying a Windows update when it was shutting down. Now when logged in as her normal user whenever she tries to run any program from the start menu or from a shortcut on the desktop she gets the following popup: "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" If she right-clicks and chooses 'Run as administrator' the program will run. We checked the Windows update history and it said the update was applied successfully and that there are no updates available. Unfortunately I'm in a different city so I don't have physical access to the system to look at it any further. Has anyone had a similar problem or have any suggestions?

I'm interested in advice on the best tools, and explanations of how to use them - when a machine slows down or freezes up, I'd like to be able to dig down and understand what's going on, memory / disk / CPU-wise.   • Publishing an Excel spreadsheet using Microsoft SBS 2008 to a web page that is viewable by mobile ph

    I am getting well out of my “superuser” depth here and would love some support. At work we have an Excel workbook (*.xls format circa Office 2003) which maintains our “engineers” timesheet. This handles what events we are doing across the year and how many “work units” it is. As far as a workbook goes, it is fairly simple with just a few =SUM(range) cells and some linked across sheets (12 sheets, one for each month) It is stored on a server, in a folder that provides “management” with full access and “engineers” with read-only access. The workbook itself is read-only for “engineers” and full access for “management”. I think these permissions are controlled through Active Directory. The workbook is protected with a password, assumingly to allow “management” to edit it even if they are working at a terminal logged in as an “engineer”. This protection prevents “engineers” from going to certain cells to see formulae and therefore editing them. The workbook has a macro which saves and closes it ten minutes after opening. This is to stop other “management” from being locked out by any one person who has logged in with editing privileges. I hope this is making sense to someone... :S Now then, we have Microsoft Small Business Server 2008. We have a shiny new web-based login for when we are offsite so we can get to Exchange webmail and our internal site (which uses Sharepoint 3.0). “Management” would like to be able to publish this timesheet automatically after changes (they don’t want to have to do anything different to what they are currently doing) so that using an iPhone “engineers” can check on it while out of the office. I am currently having a look at “Excel Services” for Office 2007 on TechNet but I am not sure if I am running down the right garden path at the moment. < EDIT This seems to suggest that I have to have Sharepoint Server 2007, with no mention of Sharepoint 3.0... ... "MOSS builds on WSS by adding both core features as well as end user web parts" - Wikipedia entry for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) this is not good news... "...and using the ASP.NET APIs, web parts can be written to extend the functionality of WSS." Wikipedia entry for Windows Sharepoint Services. Could this bring back what I need? Is this good news? Do I need to start learning ASP.NET?     I have the following autocommand, which basically strips whitespace at the end of each line. Unfortunately, at each save, it inserts a step into the undo to jump to the beginning to the file, which is quite annoying.   • Cannot Attach Database in SQL Express More Than Two Directories Deep?

    I have a database in one of my Visual Studio Express projects. I want to attach it to my local SQLEXPRESS instance so I can run aspnet_regsql on it and add the membership database. When I select Attach Databases and then attempt to browse to the files (C:\Users\username\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\nameofproject) it only lets me navigate to C:\Users\username...Why? How can I fix this?

  • New Static Website with Hosted DNS alternating 502, 503 and Page Does Not Exist Errors

    This has become an increasingly frustrating ordeal. I'm mostly a web developer, so forgive me if I am using improper terminology here. I have a client that had purchased a domain at JustHost. We built him a website and have it on our own server space. Now, I'm mostly used to dealing with godaddy and it is simple enough to manage dns records and point the A record to our server IP, where Apache on our end deals with the domains via name-based virtual hosts. But for some reason, in setting this up with JustHost, when attempting to go to the domain name, I either get a 502 or 503 error or "webpage does not exist". Now, I know that the basic functionality of the webpage must be working because I can access the the index etc straight through my servers www data (IE [server-ip]/website_folder). I was on the phone with technical support for over three hours yesterday with justhost and the best I could get was "That's really weird..." I've checked my logs and there doesn't seem to be anything coming through to my end. Does anybody have an idea of whats going on here? I would love for it to be a problem on my end, because justhost doesn't seem capable of helping further. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. I forgot to mention that we have several other sites up and running and completely accessible.

  • New to building computers worried about temps

    I'm new to building my own computers and I was wondering about maximum temperatures. I understand that the room temp can affect the computers temp but how relevent is it? I understand that if my room temp is 20°C none of my computer parts could be lower than that. But if my room is 27°C instead of 20°C would this cause my computers parts to heat up more/faster? My new computer I built myself for gaming is i7 2600k 16gb ram ddr3 1600 hd6970 2 gb 240gb ssd ( bought a nas with 3 2tb drives in raid 5 for my home network ) 850w modular psu I also have my old hp computer i3 2120 8gb ram hd6770 1tb hdd I also have 3 laptops in my household, but I am not worried about their temps, they heat up my legs but they are never under stress. Due to size and money reasons I used an old case and it only has one of the sides left on it. Is this bad for the computer and will the extra dust cause problems? Or should I leave it this way or take the missus wrath and buy a case? If so is there any certain case I should get? I don't care about looks I just want card reader and usb slots and for it to run as cool or cooler than now, my case has 1 fan. Also what are the max temps for my new and old computer parts? Is 40°C under load ok for my CPU, what about 70°C for my GPU is that ok too, or should I worry? What are normal and safe temps for my components? I have looked around but there seem to be lots of different answers. I know that 100°C is bad but I want my parts to last as long as possible and this site always seems to give good replies without arguing or flaming.

  • Notepad++: is there a way to force it to keep the autoindented-whitespace type?

    I wonder if we can force notepad++ to respect the previous whitespace character when it autoindents a new line: list[CR][LF] ····item1[CR][LF] ····item2[CR][LF] --->| (notepadd++ screenshot recreation showing hidden characters, because I don't have enough reputation to post images, sorry xP) If I am indenting with tabs I want a tab when notepad++ does an autoindent. But if I am indenting with spaces, I do want spaces.

  • A website hosted on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet, somewhere on the Internet?

    Background I'm attempting to demonstrate, using a real-world example, of why someone would not want to configure their internal network on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet. Obviously it's because this is not designated as private address space. As of 2010, ARIN has apparently allocated 1.0.0.0/8 to APNIC (the Asia-Pacific NIC), who seems to have begun assigning addresses in that subnet, though not in 1.1.0.0/16, 1.0.0.0/16, and others (because these addresses are so polluted by bad network configurations all around the Internet). My Question My question is this: I'd like to find a website that responds on this subnet somewhere and use it as a counter-example, demonstrating to a non-technical user its inaccessibility from an internal network configured on 1.0.0.0/8. Other than writing a program to sniff all ~16 million hosts, looking for a response on port 80, does anyone know of a directory I can use, or even better yet, does anyone know of a site that's configured on this subnet? WHOIS seems to be too general of a search for me at this point...

  • Bouncing between a 502 and 503 error

  • Deleting MySQL rows causes lock table error

    I had a couple million rows to delete but they can't be deleted at once without this error ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size So I wrote a script to delete 100,000 rows 10,000 at a time. It ran once but when I run it a second time I get the error on the first attempt to delete 10,000. The way I'm trying to delete the 10,000 rows is to use a delete statement that refers to all 2 million rows but I use a limit clause to affect only 10,000. I've tried adding an "unlock tables;" statement to the script before the first delete but that doesn't help. I still get the lock table error on the first delete. Any ideas how I can do this? Is there a way I can tell it NOT to lock records? I can make sure nothing else is accessing the table.

Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, undetectable watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). Problem: how to convert from .screenflow (and associated .scc files) to AVI or something a PC can play?   • e-mail no longer coming to aol inbox since I opened a Hotmail account [closed]

    I recently set up an email account with Hotmail. I have used AOL e-mail for years and would like to keep this as my main source for sending/receiving e-mail. When I set up the Hotmail account there was an option to have all my e-mail accounts forwarded to the Hotmail inbox. I set up this option and the page promised that all incoming mail would still be visible in the original inbox, in this case my AOL account. Well everything does come to the Hotmail account, the only problem is that I no longer receive these e-mails in my primary/desired location which is AOL. I went back and made sure the box was checked that provided the option through Hotmail that said "leave a copy of my messages on the server" (AOL) How do I get the e-mail that is being forwarded to Hotmail from my AOL account to still be visible in AOL, it should be in AOL inbox as that is the original destination but it is gone. Suggestions?

  • Sending emails with remote mail server in ASP.NET blocked by Windows firewall?

    I want to migrate a web application from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 R2. All works fine except sending emails from the application. If I configure the application to use the smtp server on "localhost" it works, but changing it to the "real" host name (e.g. mail.example.org) no mail is sent. The error message says, that the remote server needs a secure connection or smtp authentication. But since it works when using "localhost" instead of the host name I doubt that this is the problem. Also it's unlikely a problem with the mail server, I also tried it with another one. So for me it seems like the firewall is blocking the outgoing connection to the mail server. I tried to open port 25, but it still did not work. Maybe I just did it the wrong way.
