• Host name change breaking http? Fedora

  OK so I have been messing around on my development server. It has been a while since I have had my head in linux and I suspect I have broken something. I have SSH running and that is working fine. I also have HTTP and I had FTP running also. Earlier today I decided I wanted to rename the machine so I updated the /etc/hosts file and /etc/sysconfig/network. I also changed the server name in the httpd.conf. I rebooted the machine and reconnected to SSH fine. Later I was messing around with the FTP service (trying to tighten up the user security) and when i tried to connect remotely to FTP no joy, it said cannot connect. I thought that was weird but had planned to remove ftp as we will be using github so removed ftp and moved on. Then I tried to connect to the website but major fail. even connecting to the IP address is failing. I used lynx to connect to the localhost and there was my site so something going on at server level. I thought maybe something up with iptables but I have not changed them but tried adding http but still no joy. • Determine Location of Inode Usage

  I recently installed Munin on a development web server to keep track of system usage. I've noticted that the system's inode usage is climbing by about 7-8% per day even though the disk usage has barely increased at all. I'm guessing something is writing a ton of tiny files but I can't find what / where. I know how to find disk space usage but I can't seem to find a way to summarize inode usage. Is there a good way to determine inode usage by directory so I can locate the source of the usage?

• Copying between 2 network devices

  My network has 3 devices - 1 PC and 2 other network devices (which could be PC, NAS, external hard drive etc) If I want to copy data from one network device to another network device from my PC (using the copy and paste method (i.e right click a file, select copy and then right click into the destination folder and click paste) and therefore not using any tools that could be built into the network devices for such a transaction), does the data get routed via my PC or use my systems resources?

• 2 sited hosted in NGINX with separate SSL certs. IE8 posting invalid when starting at one site going to the other

  If users with IE8 go directly to www.xyz.com, SSL cert is fine. Users going directly to www.zyx.com have no issues with cert. If users start at one site and go to the other, they get invalid cert with xyz being used on zyx which should not be happening. Reading the forums NGINX has SNI enabled and I have the correct version of OpenSSL to be able to handle multiple certs. IE8 seems to be the issue but these are customer facing sites. Is there a fix to make NGINX work for the customers experiencing the issue.

• How do I clone an Ubuntu server under VMWare

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server running under VMWare. As best as I can tell, the VMWare vmbk file has been corrupted. The server is operating normally, but this is preventing backups (using Veeam). To remedy this, I'd like to create a duplicate VM without the corruption issue. However, with the corrupted file VMWare can't help me, eg. create a simple clone. I can create a new VM. How do I clone the configuration / data from my problematic server into the new one? Updated: just to clarify: I realise I can't use the VMWare clone tools. I will manually create a new VM (with a base O/S if necessary). How to I replicate the O/S and data from one VM into another?

• How to get started setting up IP security cameras

  I have just finished renovating my house. As part of the job, I have cat6 cable run through the house, including two external plugs. All cables terminate in the same location. My rough plan is to plug two IP cameras to monitor the front and rear, run POE from a central router to the two external cameras, plug my PC into the same router and run magic software X. Any machine plugged into the router or wirelessly connection should then be able to get a live feed and alerts based on motion detection. That's the plan, but I'm not sure how possible it is. What hardware to get and what monitoring software to get. Has anyone does something similar? What were your experiences?

• Setting Up nginx Site Down That Responds Differently to Ajax?

  I am trying to set up an automatic site-down page for nginx. So far I have this: location / { try_files /sitedown.html @myapp; } location @myapp { ... } That works well enough: if sitedown.html is present, it serves that, otherwise it serves the app. What I'd like to do, however, is respond differently to Ajax requests so that they don't error out the javascript. I believe, using the rewrite module, that I can do something like if ($http_x_requested_with = XMLHttpRequest) { but it's unclear to me how to use this in order to do what I want. I'd like requests that come with that header to return a simple JSON response like "sitedown" with the appropriate json encoding header. Barring that, it would be nice to return a 503 response code that the javascript could react to.

• Areca 1880ix RAID hangs

  Areca RAID controller ARC-1880ix-12 (firmware 1.50) hangs when on high load. My setup is: Chenbro 3U chassis Intel S5500BC mainboard Xeon 5603 CPU 16GB of RAM 12 Seagate SAS drives ST32000645SS (2 of them as hot spare, 10 as RAID10) Mellanox Infiniband HBA card This server is working as external infiniband storage for Xen VMs. When load is quite big Areca's firmware hangs - it becomes unreachable even from Areca's ethernet adapter. After resetting the server power it returns to normal operation. While Areca is hanged I can confirm that it is powered (ethernet link is active) and Infiniband HBA works Ok. Thanks in advance for any idea or suggestion where the problem might be!

• Deny login from certain hosts if logging in with specific sql credentials

  I want to stop some of our developers from connecting to the production sql server using a specific sql account. They have rights to connect through windows authentication with lower rights. They claim that changing the password will affect too many other processes running on our processing machine. So I want to deny access if they're connecting from there dev machines for now. Another way this would work is if I could just allow connections from one specific host.

• Escape a ! in the password parameter of wget

  I'm trying to execute something like this: wget --user=foo --password=bar! url The ! in the password is causing problems. I've tried escaping it with \, as in --password=bar\! I've tried encapsulating in single and double quotes. I put the password in a separate file and tried --password=cat pass.txt Each time, I get a 403 Forbidden. Using -d, I see that the SSL handshake is successful. On the Windows command line, the command works. My assumption is that I need to escape the ! differently, but I don't know how else.

• 301 redirect, canonical question

  I've designed my own 'latest news' page for my site - and I'm trying to keep the URL's clean. (eg) It should look like this : http://www.domain.com/21/this-is-a-clean-url/ When someone links to the article, they sometimes mess it up and do : http://www.domain.com/21/this-is-a-clean-url/#random-hash-tag So what I have been doing is looking for "http://www.domain.com/21" and 301 (moved permantly) redirecting to the proper url + adding a canonical meta tag for it. Is this going overboard? Should I instead be using a (302 Found) header - and just let the canonical tag tell search engines what the proper URL for the article is? What is the best way of handling this?

• What is the fastest CPU my laptop can support?

  I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop and would like to speed up compile times on it. I have confirmed that it is, indeed, the processor time that is the bottleneck. How can I tell what processors are compatible with the motherboard to pick the best available? I run dual boot Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7. lshw tells me that my motherboard is OHN338 from Dell, Inc. If anyone has a generic solution, i.e. "For motherboard X, here is how you find out what processors are supported," that would be make this question much more useful to future visitors. But if you also know of a way to find out specific to my model, that would be great as well.

• Firefox takes a really long time to load some sites on Ubuntu

  Hello guys, I have an issue here. Some sites - just a few - takes a really long time to load on Firefox. One example is A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/) which takes more than 30 minutes (yes, minutes, not seconds). On Opera, ou even through a telnet session, the problematic sites run without problem, fast as expected. I am using Linux 8.04, running Firefox 3.6.3 downloaded from mozilla site, with a 10M ADSL connection. I tried many tweaks I found googling, like disable IPv6, and change http pipelining settings on FF's about:config. None worked. I also used Firebug to find what phase during negotiation is the bottleneck. Findings are in the screenshot. Well guys, any idea what is the issue? And how to solve it? I repeat, this only happens with firefox (3.6.3 and prior versions), for a few sites only (even sites with much more requests, images, javascripts, stylesheets work fine), and http pipelines and IPv6 tweaks on about:config didn't work. • My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

  I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

  Background I have a set of embedded hardware deployed in the field. These remote machines connect back to my servers at AWS running Ubuntu and I use the iptables mangle chain to lower the MTU to 500 so these devices are happy. For reference, this is the iptables rule I am using: -A POSTROUTING -p tcp --sport 12345 --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -o eth0 -j TCPMSS --set-mss 500 Current Problem I'm trying to spin up some servers on the Joyent Cloud using SmartOS, but I can't find any information on selectively changing the MTU like I can on Linux (e.g. all info I've found is on changing it globally, which is not what I want). How would I do it so that all connections on TCP port 12345 get the MTU I want?

• Using PCIe and onboard together

  I'm currently using my PCI Express card to run 2 monitors and my onboard to run another. It works fine despite people saying it won't. I use a gadget to monitor my PCI card but would also like to monitor my onboard GPU as well. I play a game called Eve Online and when I'm running my accts I can only get 20 fps. Before, when I was using just my PCI card, I was getting 60+. To solve this, I set the display options to interval immediate, it was set to one before. My computer handles it no problem at all, but I was always told this was immpossible. I was hoping someone could explain how and why this is working. Thanks! • Too Many Files In Debian Linux Folder?

  I've been using an external USB drive on a Debian server for backup. The drive is formatted as NTFS and mounted with ntsfmount. This was working fine, but I was filling up a directory with lots of files. Eventually the backup failed. When I then tried to look at the directory using ls it reported: ls: reading directory .: Numerical result out of range Looking in syslog, I also saw this: Sep 23 07:35:31 tosh ntfsmount[28040]: Failed to read index block: Numerical result out of range. Is this simply that I've reached the upper limit of number of files in a directory? If so, is there any way to extend the number of allowed files?

• Virtualbox and getting the Locked VT-x Error when trying to use more than 1 processor on the session

  I have installed the latest version of virtualbox onto my Hewlett Pakard (h8-1170uk) I have a intel i7 2600 cpu and 8 gb of ram I can get virtual box to create several sessions of different operating systems at the same time, but whenever i try to get 1 session to open up using more than 1 processor option select ( i wanted one of my session access to 2 processors ) i keep getting this error message VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb} I have search many times and cannot find a option to correct this. I have check my BIOS and there are no options about VT-x or Virtualisation or anything. Am i doing something wrong ? Why does Virtualbox run fine when just using the 1 processor option ?

• Can gedit on mac be used to edit files over ssh?

  I use a linux machine at work and a mac at home. I can ssh from my machine at home to my work machine. But the only editor that I have access to on the command line then is vi, which I don't like. Is there a way to use gedit on my mac to edit files remotely over an ssh connection? This page says that it can be done, but I think that it assumes that you are using gedit on ubuntu. • Nginx location to match query parameters

  Is it possible in nginx to have a location {} block that matches query parameters. For example I want to pick up that "preview=true" in this url and then instruct it to do several different things, all possible in a location block. http://192.158.0.1/web/test.php?hello=test&preview=true&another=var The problem I'm having is that my test stuff doesn't seem to match, it seems like I can only match the URL itself? E.g. location ~ ^(.*)(preview)(.*)$ Or something aloong those lines?
