• LCD monitor flicker when connected to a laptop using VGA

  I have a dual screen setup with two AOC e2450Sw monitors connected to a laptop. The laptop has one HDMI and one VGA output. When one of the monitors is connected using VGA, it flickers or displays static noise. The flickering is fairly subtle and only visible on darker colors. But it is there and noticable and appears like horizontal lines. The problem only appears on the monitor connected to the laptop using the VGA cable. If I swap the monitors, the one connected using VGA is displaying the flicker but not the one connected using HDMI. The simple solution would ofcourse be to connect both monitors using HDMI, but since the laptop only has one VGA and one HDMI out that isn't possible. I've tried tweaking the monitor setting using the OSD menu, but it had little or no effect. Update: After several more trouble shooting hours, it seems the problem is not related to the monitor or VGA cable as the problem persists even if I swap the display with another brand and different cables. So it may be the graphics card? Intel HD Graphics 4000. The laptop is Acer Aspire E1-571.

• Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

  The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this? • Toshiba Satellite U500 - Totally Damaged LCD

  I accidentally damaged my Toshiba Satellite U500 laptop which resulted in a totally unusable LCD. The LCD panel has some cracks on it, and I can only see black & white spots; the laptop frame became broken/bent to where I can partially see inside the PC; the accident disassembled the CD tray, and bent the keyboard frame (which now has a weird hump). The system is still working though. It responds to my inputs (eg, turning it on/off, typing my password @ Windows Login, etc). What I want to do now is to transfer all of my important data from that laptop to my external drive. But I don't know how since the LCD screen is unreadable. I know I can connect it to an external monitor or a TV (I have a Samsung 1080p TV) but I don't know how. What cable should I purchase to connect the TV? Which ports on the laptop and TV should I connect it to? Do I need press something while/after connecting it? Can I boot my laptop using the TV?

  How to connect to a computer that is in Sleep mode over the internet? I am using LogMeIn to connect to another computer offsite. I just installed Windows 7 RC on that system and found that the Sleep mode actually works. Currently LogMeIn does not connect when the system is in Sleep mode or Hibernate mode (that is what their error message displays when you try). Is there a way to get LogMeIn to connect to a system in Sleep mode? Is there other software that gives simliar LogMeIn functionallity (like RDP, etc.) that could be used on Windows 7 instead. I just use LMI for connecting and nothing else (no printing or file transfers). A Non-expensive options (such as free) would be better. I have seen web sites mentioning "Wake on LAN". Does anyone have some good links on how to set this up to be accessed over the internet? Edited: It looks like LogMeIn BETA might be the solution. https://beta.logmein.com/welcome/nextgen/ Has anyone tried this beta yet?

  I am using the "ftp" command of linux to send data to a 3rd party provider. This company states that we need to "Disable passive mode in your FTP client", and I confirm it doesn't work in passive mode. However, when I googled the linux command, I see that the "-p" flag is "the default now for all clients (ftp and pftp) due to security concerns using the PORT transfer mode. The flag is kept for compatibility only and has no effect anymore." How do I disable passive mode then? And, is it that bad?

• ping/ssh networking problem with server from 1 particular windows xp laptop

  I am experiencing an odd problem with one specific server at my data centre connecting from my laptop. Basically the server is accessible from other machines in my house, but not from 1 particular laptop which is running windows XP. I have setup tcpdump on the server and wireshark on the laptop, and I can see ping echo request and reply packets that actually make it back to the wireshark on the laptop, but nothing shows in the ping console output like so; $ ping xxx.55.32.255 Pinging xxx.55.32.255 with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. • Windows 7 laptop fonts DPI is too big breaking certain applications

  I have just installed windows 7 on a laptop and the fonts seem to be doing weird things, Ive adjusted the DPI back to 100% (was 125% by default) however certain applications (old delphi programmed ones) do not look correct still. Here is a screen shot comparing my laptop to my PC running the same software (ROCLink RTU configuration software), the PC looks fine but the laptop does not. Does anyone know where the problem may lie or what I should try next? Thanks

• SQL 2005 Install completly broken on laptop.

  My problems started when I set up an exploratory domain controller at home. During that process, I changed the name of my laptop, from 'erisia' to 'erisia-laptop', and this resulted in me losing my admin account on SQL Server 2005 on my laptop. SQL Server seems to store the machine name as part of the user name, so now my local admin account is 'erisia-laptop\brady', which SQL server didn't recognise. I thought I'd cut my losses and just re-install SQL 2005, but the first install was aborted, so I tried a complete uninstall, followed by the new install. The latter didn't work while the former worked way too well. Now every attempt at installing SQL Server 2005 SP2 on my laptop running XP SP3 ends in sadness, with MSXML6 being the cause, because it won't install on this OS version. WTF? Does anyone know what I can do to get SQL 2005 installed? It's the only full admin DB tool I have. SQL 2008 Express that installed with VS 2010 Beta 2 doesn't allow much server admin.

  I was wondering whether it is better to put a laptop into sleep or hibernation in Windows 7, and suspend or hibernate in Ubuntu: when carrying the laptop in a backpack and walking or slow-running to another place in around 15 minutes, Or just when the lid is closed. My concerns are if the heat generated and accumulated and bumping from transmit will do harm to the laptop, and I can miss other important factors. Is sleep in Windows 7 same as suspend in Ubuntu? • Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

When I cool at the switch's "Status and Counters - Port status" page, I see an inconsistency between ports of the same trunk. I could expect them to be identical.   Hi! When i start my pc i get following message: The Logon User Interface DLL RtlGina2.dll failed to load I found solution here But i ca not log into my pc, neither in safe/normal mode. It is interesting that first time i succeed loging into safe mode, but change msconfig boot.ini to safemode with networking where i can not log in. And now every time no matter what i am choosing from F8 menu, i enter in safe mode with networking(where i get following error). So is it any way to log in back into "pure" safe mode. I am not sure that the question it`s clear enough ;-(

• Dual Monitor setup issues between laptop and external led monitor

  I have two challenges. Monitor will not connect to laptop through HDMI Watching HD video content causes the laptop to sometimes turn off expecially when I'm streaming from tekzilla.com Setup. I got my new HP 2311x LED LCD monitor this week and I have it running as the main monitor extended by the 15 inch screen on my Dell Studio 1558. Right now I have to connect the external monitor through VGA. For the HDMI connection issue. I suspect that either the appropriate drivers are not installed because I don't see any hdmi device in the device manager. I've checked and I don't see any hdmi specific drivers listed online. For the shut down issue, I suspect the laptop might be overheating. Not sure why it would. It never did that while I watched movies on my laptop's default screen. My Laptop Configuration: 15" led lcd screen at 1366 x 768 intel i5 processor integrated graphics card 4 GB DDR3 RAM 500 GB hard drive I've tried everything from switching the source on my monitor to hdmi to start up combinations and nothing has worked. What could be the issue and how do I solve it?

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

• SQL Server compatibility mode not logged

  I've been researching a problem which was diagnosed as someone changing the compatability mode for the SQL Server database from 80 to 90 on SQL Server 2005 for a database which had it's compatibility mode set to 80 due to legacy stored procedure code not having been upgraded. I found that when changing the compatibility mode this is not logged in the SQL Server logs. Has anyone seen this issue and is this a bug or is there an alternative method to track these changes?

• Windows 7 Not Booting After Moving Partition

  I have a Sony Vaio laptop. After using GParted to move the primary Windows partion, the laptop no longer boots, saying 'Operating system not found'. I don't have a recovery disc and the only other machine I have access to is a Mac Mini. I have tried creating a bootable USB using the recovery ISO from Microsoft. I can see all the files on the USB stick from my Mac. I followed the instructions here: http://borgstrom.ca/2010/10/14/os-x-bootable-usb.html I have set the laptop BIOS boot order to be 'External' first, but the laptop refuses to boot from the USB stick. I have previously been able to boot from a linux installation on the USB stick. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

• Lenovo G530 laptop screen flicker

  I have a Lenovo G530 laptop that has an issue with screen flicker that is getting worse. The computer screen will start going thru a crazy screen flicker then will stop and start again. I have already checked cable connection to lcd on motherboard and reseated connection as someone suggested in another posting I found online that resolved issue. I am starting to think it might be a bad inverter or screen because I have hooked up laptop to external monitor and it is running fine with no flickering happening when the flickering is occurring on laptop. • Reinstalling a fresh Windows 8 on my new laptop

  OK I have a new Dell (Inspiron 15R 5520) laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I'm really not a fan of pre-installed Windows since they are bundled with tons of softwares I don't want and settings I don't like. I would like to reinstall it myself with a fresh installation. I have bought Windows 8 Pro OEM already for my desktop computer and it came with the usual OEM sticker with the Windows serial on it. Now my new laptop only have a Windows 8 logo sticker on it with no serial on it. After some research it seems it's normal. Now, can I format my laptop and install Windows 8 (not pro) from my Windows 8 Pro OEM DVD? I ask because when I installed Windows 8 Pro it asked for the serial (which was found on the sticker). I'm wondering if the same DVD will detect the serial on the BIOS of my new laptop or I need a special Dell DVD for that?

• squeaky sound when in 5.1 mode Audigy2 ls

  Hi I'm using alsa in 5.1 mode. pcm.ch51dup { slave.pcm surround51 slave.channels 6 type route ttable.0.0 1 ttable.1.1 1 ttable.0.2 1 ttable.1.3 1 ttable.0.4 0.5 ttable.1.4 0.5 ttable.0.5 0.5 ttable.1.5 0.5 } The 5.1 mode works but I get sqeaky sound in one of the speakers but it's not there once I turn it back into stereo mode and turn on the matrix mode. The speakers are the Logitech X-540. I do have onboard sound but I've disabled via the sound preferences applet in gnome I'm using a Audigy2 ls with ubuntu lucid. Why is this? The asoundrc is the only file I've played with. I enable 5.1 using the sound preferences applet provided by gnome.

• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality?
