• Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

• The shortest licenses

  What are the shortest licenses with aims for programmers/code. I have found only MIT that is page-long. What are other licenses that have approximately the same length or even shorter? Edit: Ok, length is not only criteria(I haven't expected one-line licenses, I have understaminate you people). I need easy to read and short licenses. It is meant for people who want to use my code not for lawyers who want to read long licenses. I am creating small codes to use by most people probably free of charge. I don't want useless information to be required, for example: what is X(for example: what is software, source code etc.) very specific information(for example: you can use it shop, opera, school... free of charge; but instead "use it everywhere but don't take money" Depending on type of code I would like to allow/disallow commercial usage.

• Is there any Google Adsense revenue if a visitor rolls over (hovers) on an ad unit?

  I have noticed an increase in interactive flash animations especilly on 300px wide adsense ads. Many of them ask the visitor to rollover to either reveal what the ad is about, show a clip, etc. So I wonder: the visitor is giving attention to this ad, is viewing its message -- without clicking on it. In essence, the ad agency's objective is accomplished without a click, which would be a significant money saver if PPC is considered. This seems very ingenious on their part, and I wonder how this is handled by Google. Shouldn't there be a fee for a publisher if visitors interact with ads, regardless of clicks? CTR becomes irrelevant in this context. Are you aware of anything being discussed in this respect?

• Any good site that teaches C++?

  I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. I got interested in programming, from scripting in LUA, so you can say it was my small stepping stone, One would basically take a course in college, but not everyone is well funded for that and I can't buy books for the same said reason(yes I'm somewhat poor, only money for essentials and bills), I'm not trying to get sympathy, just stating my conditions. and Please, something in between the lines of 'Programming for Dummies'(I'm not the brightest crayon in the box), I know this will not be easy, but your help will be most appreciated. I would learn for either Windows and/or Linux/Unix. I use both. Site(s) I know: Cplusplus.org(quite inactive and tutorials are a little for the programming savvy.

• Business Analyst vs. Architect [closed]

  I'm a developer of a few years in the financial industry and will soon need to decide what career path to try and row towards. Broadly speaking I have two options: something more 'people' oriented like BAs, or keep coding and try to make more technical decisions like the Architects do where I currently work. Here are my perceptions right now: Business Analysts: get paid way more than devs once they do their job, it seems like they usually have no worries more likely to go REALLY high up in the organization (VPs, etc) Architects: things like certification matters (I see this as a con) called in when things go wrong more than anyone else (weekends & overtime) long career path to get to (dev - senior dev - team lead - architect) I would find the latter more intellectually rewarding, but when I look at it I just can't justify it in terms of lifestyle. Am I wrong / what am I missing? Can you really make a lot of money in a technical role or must you really get out of coding? Thank you for any constructive input.

• How do you balance between "do it right" and "do it ASAP" in your daily work?

  I find myself pondering this question times and times again. I want to do things the right way, to write a clean, understandable, correct code that is easy to maintain, but what I really do pretty often is writing a patch upon patch just because there is no time, clients are waiting, a bug should be fixed overnight, the company is losing money on this problem, a manager is pressing hard etc. etc. I know perfectly well that in a long shot I am wasting much more time on these patches, but as this time is spread over months of work, nobody cares. Also, as one of my managers used to say, we don't know if there will be this long shot if we will not fix it now. I am sure I am not the only one entrapped in this endless real/ideal choices. So how you, fellow programmers, are coping with this?

• android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.

  I couldn't quite think of a proper description, so as Wikipedia puts it so beautifully: Financial services are the economic services provided by the finance industry, which encompasses a broad range of organizations that manage money, including credit unions, banks, credit card companies, insurance companies, consumer finance companies, stock brokerages, investment funds and some government sponsored enterprises. These are quite a range of industries. I've already thought about how banks specifically have gotten involved with app markets allowing users to make transfers on the go, and this goes with cloud computing, but what else could there be apart from mobile technologies and cloud computing? Or how else could they be used? I feel like I'm thinking about this wrong.. Apart from mobile computing and cloud computing, what other examples will influence the sector either positively or negatively?

• Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

  For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D? • Get income on a free app, offline?

  I have an Android app which I added adMob ads to. They only work tough when the user is online. Now the problem is, the app is specially made for offline use, so pretty much nobody will ever get to see one. The app is free to download, but I would still like to make a few cents out of it. It currently has around 300, which I guess will look at it about twice per workday. Any help on how to make some money with this free, offline app?

Beside quality service and content, because I'm serving them for a high fee, I want to make them feel like it is a personal, unparalleled kind of service and I want to spend money for creating things that I give them after their registration such as a beautiful physical membership card so that I can use the effect of mouth-words better and beside that let them be proud about the service. I've tried my best to develop the site experience classy and I'm looking for things in real world to send them after their registration (such as membership card and a small paper tutorial). • Can I display ads on a site whose domain name includes a trademark?

I don't want to get into trouble with the trademark owner so my plan is to use the domain to display information (wiki-style) about the service the trademark owner provides. My question is whether I can display ads on this website to make money. For example, let's say I own Google.org (Google being a trademark).   Here's a situation that usually happens in some companies: Announce interesting product X. Promise a release date. Release on the promised released date, ready or not. Users discover and report defects. Send patch after patch after patch after patch after patch. My question is: Ummm, what could be the factors that would lead them to tolerate these undesirable practices? So, in the name of quality, what can be practically and realistically improved in those practicies? I can think of time constraints, user feedback, sponsors pressuring the company, lack of money.

  Bigger companies usually have the problem, that it is not possible to write all programs employees want (to save time and to optimize processes) due to a lack of staff and money.
