  • Run command remotely on Windows computer

    I have a Windows Server 2008 instance on Amazon EC2 (Amazon's cloud compute platform, which provides VMs in the cloud). It has an external IP, and I have an admin account on the box. I would like to 'bootstrap' this instance remotely i.e. I want to run commands to download, install and configure apps on it, all without having to log on even once. Also, I cannot use psexec on the source computer. I have figured out how to do this to a remote, domain-joined computer using WMI. However, I have NOT been able to do for a remote computer on EC2. Here are some specific restrictions: The remote computer is not part of my domain, hence no Kerberos The remote computer does not have a cert I trust, or vice versa I am sure I am running into to some auth/trust restriction. Is there any way I can run a single command on the remote, given that I have admin privileges? I'm not tied down to using WMI, but I do need to run a command somehow. Feels like this should be a solved problem.

  • Loop through text nodes inside a div

    I am trying to do a text replace, but to do so, i need to loop through the text nodes of a div. Each Div upon clicking, loads via ajax it's appropriate content. But then I need to do text-replacing inside any of the text nodes inside there. My current code, after loading the ajax content, loops through all text nodes of the whole page, and therefore is too resource intensive. I have been looking for hours trying to find out how to both loop thru a div, and get the text nodes... and this has to work in firefox, google chrome and ie6. Any thoughts or suggestions?

    If you had to iterate through a loop 7 times, would you use: for (int i = 0; i < 7; i++) or: for (int i = 0; i <= 6; i++) There are two considerations: performance readability For performance I'm assuming Java or C#. Does it matter if "less than" or "less than or equal to" is used? If you have insight for a different language, please indicate which. For readability I'm assuming 0-based arrays. UPD: My mention of 0-based arrays may have confused things. I'm not talking about iterating through array elements. Just a general loop. There is a good point below about using a constant to which would explain what this magic number is. So if I had "int NUMBER_OF_THINGS = 7" then "i <= NUMBER_OF_THINGS - 1" would look weird, wouldn't it.

  • Thin client - cloud machine - to run via iPad, iPhone, most Androids etc

    I'm tired of having a laptop macbook that breaks down or having files that I need to sync via dropbox etc all the time via the machines to different OS installations. It sucks. I want a thin client where I can login on any machine - my iPhone, PC desktop, iPad etc to one running machine. I would like to replace a modernly powerful desktop iMac with a thin client running via my iPad. I will connect the iPad with a keyboard/mouse too so you get the idea. But I want to be able to use some of the Android phones as well (I guess most Android phones today has a good enough performance/resolution etc to run a thin client). Of course it has to be able to have input/output in sound. Printing can be solved by PDF/emailing etc - so no direct communication to the printer ports to USB etc is necessary. Is there such a service today? It should cost somewhere under something like $40/ month. I will run stuff like CPU heavy duty ableton for music production, xCode for making iOS apps, some games etc. And on the thin client also run virtual machines. VM of Ubuntu and Windows.

  • DOS Batch script loop

    I need to execute a command 100-200 times, so far my research indicates that I would either have to copy paste 100 copies of this command, OR use a FOR loop, but the for loop expects a list of items, hence I would need 200 files to operate on, or a list of 200 items, hence defeating the point. I would really not have to write a C program and go through the length of documenting why I had to write another program to execute my program for test purposes. Modification of my program itself is also no an option. So, given a command how would I execute it times via a DOS batch script?

  • PHP Script Won't Run - Apache2/MySQL Servers Running, PHP Installed - Ubuntu 10.04

    I am trying to install a CRM on a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) laptop to do some testing. Installing the current versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP, and getting the CRM to run is easy. It's when I try to go backwards and run it on a previous set of versions I run into problems. This is what I have done: I have installed Apache 2.2.14, MySQL 5.0.83, and PHP 5.2.8. When I type something like mysql --version I get back what I would expect: version and distribution info. The same goes for Apache2 and PHP. The Apache server is running and so is mysqld. So when I go to my browser and look at http://localhost/<CRM dir>/install.php Firefox offers to open the PHP file or save it, as if it doesn't recognize the file. What should happen is that I should get a welcome page and the installation wizard for this CRM distribution should start. I have tried so many different things I probably screwed up something along the way. I have restarted the servers over and over, and even recompiled the versions of MySQL and PHP with no problems. I am hoping I am overlooking something simple because I am lost. Any help is appreciated.

    I have made this upstart script, which starts a Node.js service. But all of the sudden the service has stopped, and upstart has failed to restart it. Now that I am trying to start it manually, it fails to recognize my service: start: Unknown job: queue The script is properly placed in /etc/init, and should have the correct rights: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 200 Aug 7 13:30 queue.conf When I check the config file with init-checkconf however, it says that it is not able to run as root: root@production1:~# init-checkconf /etc/init/queue.conf ERROR: cannot run as root What causes this error and how do I solve it?     Im using the Twitter API to collect the number of tweets I've favorited, well to be accurate the total pages of favorited tweets. I use this URL: http://api.twitter.com/1/users/show/username.xml I grab the XML element 'favorites_count' For this example lets assume favorites_count=5 The Twitter API uses this URL to get the favorties: http://twitter.com/favorites.xml (Must be authenticated) You can only get the last 20 favorties using this URL, however you can alter the URL to include a 'page' option by adding: ?page=3 to the end of the favorites URL e.g. http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=2 So what I need to do is use CURL (I think) to collect the favorite tweets, but using the URL: http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=1 http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=2 http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=3 http://twitter.com/favorites.xml?page=4 etc... Some kind of loop to visit each URL, and collect the Tweets and then output the cotents. Can anyone help with this: - Need to use CURL to authenticate - Collect the number of pages of tweets (Already scripted this) - Then use a loop to go through each page URL based on the pages value?

  • Can I run Excel 2010 on a server?

    This question is not about a person using Excel on a computer that happens to have an Windows Server OS. And it is not about using any Sharepoint services features! The question is about automated processes that use code (Office Automation) to open Excel files, manipulate them, run calculations, read data, save copies of the file and close the files... all in code. In previous versions of Excel the licensing agreement prevented use on a public server, notes from Microsoft warned about the problems trying to use Office Automation in a server environment, and we were warned that Excel was single threaded and not designed for use on a server. Most of the articles about this were written before Office 2010. But now, Excel 2010 is designed to work on a High Performance Computing server using HPC Services for Excel. One HPC document mentions "Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 includes a comprehensive pop-up manager that can handle occasional dialog boxes and pop-up messages". So my question is... is it now "safe" to run code that automates Excel 2010 on a "normal" server without using the HPC services? If not, can the HPC Services for Excel work on a single server? I don't need the high performance, distributed computing, aspect of HPC Services for Excel... just the ability to run Excel on a server. Can that now be done? Thanks, Glen

    Having a hard time fixing this or finding any good hints about it. I'm trying to loop over one file, modify each line slightly, and then loop over a different file. Yes, I am sure the if has true cases. :-) "seqres.txt" has lines with an ID number in a certain format, each followed by a line with data. The "ids.txt" has lines with the ID numbers of interest in a different format. I want each line of data with an interesting ID number in its own file.   • Outlook 2010 on WinXP runs once then refuses to run again until reboot

    Since I installed Outlook 2010 on a new machine (WinXP Pro SP3) a couple months back I have had an issue that is quite annoying: If I close Outlook then attempt to restart it I get a small pop-up saying only: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook". I found one workaround, but not a terribly practical one: reboot. If I reboot then launch Outlook, it opens fine. Here is what I know: Since I can run Outlook just fine after a reboot, I do not see that a system restore, an OS reinstall, or the like would help. I tried "outlook.exe /resetnavpane" and "outlook.exe /safe" but those give the same error. There are no entries in the event log. There is no instance of Outlook appearing in the process list once I close the program, so it does not seem to be an alias for "outlook is already running". As far as I have found, my situation is unique among reports of similar incidents: I have uncovered no other reports saying Outlook would run fine the first launch or that a reboot would again allow it to run. Suggestions?
